Great video...I LOVE my '53 D-28. My father was the original owner, I inherited it from him in 2014. Mine is in VERY good, all original condition and it plays and sounds incredible as you might expect! Lookin forward to seeing more videos from Tyler...
I saw this guy in an Augusta Bluegrass Week video on TH-cam and thought his guitar playing was great and that his guitar was amazing so nice to hear the story !
Nice old D-28. Owned a few 40s and 50s Dreadnaught Martins in the past. . It has great tonal Balance -Many don’t. I crafted a Brazilian D-28 herringbone in 1990. It has pre war tone and is my go to Bluegrass Box. Elvis played a D-18. Larson’ Bros and few others made a few Big Dreadnaught sized acoustics in those early days also.
I had a 53 D-28 one of a limited version with Adirondack spruce top confirmed in a appraisal by George Gruhn in Nashville. The guitar was in better than excellent condition and sounded wonderful however I came across a 1940 D-18 for sale that a lady had inherited from her uncle at a unbelievable price of which I simply could not put down. I dearly hated to sell the 28 but it could not keep up with the 18. Loudest guitar I have ever played in my sixty years of pickin.
Hi Tom! Are you sure? I have a 53 D28, the topwood is wide grained, compared to other tops it could be Adi. Do you have more informations about these "mystery-tops"? Thanx!
@@Nono1234x Grain width is not an indication of a wood species. It's an indication of how much sun the tree was getting. Sitka comes from Alaska where the trees are big and dense hence the very tight grain. The wood looks like Englemann to me and it certainly sounds like it. Englemann has a very sweet tone tone. I've heard people say they also used red spruce that year I don't know.. Whatever it's a great sounding guitar like most 1953 Martins.
No idea about this particular guitar, but I string mine (Authentic Aged 1937 D-28) with Martin Marquis Phosphor Bronze, Lifespan 2.0 (MA550T). It sounds great on mine…very comparable to what I’m hearing here.

How there aren't a bunch of comments on this, I just don't understand... He and it sound simply amazing...
Now I know the history of the guitar I learned from. Awesome story, brother! Be blessed...
I Owen a new Martin which I love but listening to that old D28 there’s a depth to it’s sound , it’s beautiful , thankyou I loved hearing it.
I owned a '58 D-28, which I played for decades. I made the mistake of selling it somewhere in the late 70's. (We all do dumb stuff.)

Just discovering this channel. Really great content! Thanks
1953 was a great year for the D28.
What do you think of the HD-28V that has a 1-11/16" nut with Modified V-neck?
I like them! The Golden Era series was stellar also.
what kind of mic or something did you attached on the d28's headstock?
That's a planet waves tuner
It has the sound...no need to go looking for a mid 30's.
What string are useing d 28 great tone
D'Addario EJ17 - Medium Gauge Phosphor Bronze
The mystery wood of 1953 was in fact engleman.

I am not convinced that this one is Engleman. I think it is red spruce or sitka.
@@TylerGrant I have heard different opinions on my '53 as well...I guess that's why it's called a "mystery top"! 😄
What string on d28

wow that action looks low and effortless to play.. Do you know the string heights at the 12th fret? Neck relief must be minimal
What a player and flat picker...
