Except rather than keeping myself so busy that I didn't have to face who I really was. I chose to go swimming deep sea diving at the bottom of a bottle.

A brilliant & great scene (acting & writing) - i started watching OITNB recently & I'm extremely impressed by the quality (heartbreaking, thought provoking & funny) of this series. All the characters are great. This scene is riveting & I laughed out loud at the end.❤

It’s an adult prison. The kids were on a jail tour.

It’s an adult prison - the kids were just on a school visit, potential young offenders who were on the same road to becoming one of the inmates and to get scared straight.
normally the prisoners dont listen to the guard against himself acutely they do the opposite. true story

She could have said four walls and a hot n a cot are no substitution for freedom. Missed funerals smelling food guard’s bring in ripping you’re stomach apart and being treated as nothing more than an animal.. you never look at cops the same because you know what 4 walls talking to you feels like now.. other people become obstacles and when you get out and see the world has changed you realize so have you because you no longer trust people or yourself.. space and opportunity used to be a catch phrase but now it’s you’re life moto.. we all die we don’t all live and now child you can’t because you will never see the world again the way you did.. enjoy having a criminal record

It would have been heavier if Piper said "I am here because I allowed my personal feelings cloud my moral judgement and Prison now more than ever doesn't discriminate against anyone, because of what I did I will be a criminal for the rest of my life, I won't be able to vote, get a government Job, even live in a nice neighborhood. I lost the trust of Family, and My Boyfriend and when they come here, it is so hard for them. Even when I get out, my life won't be the same because of past mistakes.

i think thats too generic, anyone can see that shes lost a job, anyone can see where theyre at and where theyre going. what piper did was make it more realistic, everyone knows you go to jail and cant get s job, not everyone knows the soul crushing solititude of prison after the fact.
the kids heard everything else before
I hate piper as a character for how ‘selfish’ she is, but this scene remains one of my favorites of the show

In my opinion, this scene was really shallow and out of character for piper. Of course she doesn't know who she is, she is yelling at a kid in a wheelchair she doesn't know. it puts this superiority complex in a positive light when this systematic manipulation is one of the things that makes prison so awful.
If I were that kid I would point out that the only reason she doesn't feel like herself is that she is the type of person to not see past the orange she was wearing, that she was in prison too, and that just because it's convenient for everyone to be better than you, they aren't going to be just because you told them to, and you feel good doing it.
Life is more nuanced than whether or not you feel like you "scared someone straight" when people only act out like this out of fear. piper basically told the kid to let down her guard so that she could scare her, just because she wanted to. It gets really unrealistic when the kid listens out of generosity, just to be talked to this way by a stranger. I like piper, but there is something about pitting prisoners against each other I find disturbing.
I think this message fell flat, because no kid who is a gang leader, and is in a wheelchair is just going to say to a random lady,
"I'm not going to be a gang leader anymore, cause you like told me to"
if people live life to please others, then others will be pleased, but telling someone who lives life to do the opposite that you're not pleased with them isn't going to turn them into a saint.
the idea that the only good that can come out of people, is driven by fear, is not really good at all. it implies that people who do bad things are fearless, and if someone has some fear left in them, we should use that to make them behave. a world where good people are only good because they're scared, and bad people are only bad because that's who they truly are, is a disturbing one, and projecting that onto a world where people have their own life experiences just so that you can have your moment isn't that realistic.
