I always look forward to your videos!! Great garden!! My watermelons were a first for me this year and I can declare them a disaster. But watching your videos and learning from my mistakes will make me a better melon gardner next year I hope. Thanks again!!
Drip tape works great for me. i did my beds like you this year more black diamond melons than i have ever grown, big to. I live in east texas & it done got hot past four days over 100, i hope they can handle the heat. Thank you for all your info it really helped me a lot this year.
man, Randall...that's a hell of a patch you got. I'm growing my first melons this year, only have 6 or so but they are looking real good so far. Good video, thank you.
If you ever start a new grow bed try using a mesh as a liner. You can get one at any place that sells pond equipment, it's called a geo-pad underlay. It's a polypropylene nonwoven needlepunched fabric. I used one for my pond and it's sopose to keep roots from growing into the pond and causing it to leak. It can keep out the roots of other unwanted plants. That way only the plants that you feed get fed. I got mine at justliners online. Lowes or Home Depot might have something simular.
I like watching your videos, wishing we had a sunny patch for growing. I am sure the tree problem is what you think. First of all with these raised beds I bet the melon root system is mostly in the bed. I'd say your watering makes up whatever a dryer soil below the bed is trying to draw from the bed. Any tree roots must first reach to the bed. Cutting a shallow trench around the bed will sever the tree root system much like the way a tree root plow run around a field does the same. In STL @100+F
Thank you for this great video sir. Quick question: what's the length and breadth of the bed and what measurements are the spacing. I have some beds of 5ft wife by 12ft long. How do I space this for better planting and harvesting? Your response will be highly appreciated!
Well were gearing up for spring and summer here in East TN, Im curious why you dont plant your maters in a bed? Any advantage to potting them? Hope to see some new videos this season rgann.
What is your watering pattern for your water melons? Last year I had blossom end rot and I think it's cause of my watering. You have a great melon patch and I could use your help thanks
That poison you're referring to that kills the stump is actually about 99% Potassium Citrait. You can usually find it in the Garden section at HomeDepot or Lowes. I'm not sure about large bottles, but i usually find it in about 1 Liter bottles with a cone shaped top. Basically, you drill deep holes into the sunny side of the tree above the root ball, and fill the holes with the Potassium Citrait. It takes quite a bit,so you might wanna get a few bottles
hi thanks for sharing. I am interested in trying watermelons and I'd like to know how many seeds you put in each hole and how you space them out in the bed please. thanks
Concerning your trees......once they are cut down, put briquets on the stump and light.the charcoal is supposed to keep burning the stump down including the roots until gone
To kill a tree, drill a hole in it and fill the hole with copper sulfate or a strong copper sulfate solution. Placing copper sulfate on the stump will kill the roots and prevent production of suckers.
Hi... Try drilling deep holes into root and pouring salt into the holes and seal if you can ..because all plants are acid in pH the salt is an Alkali and will burn it. Let me know if this works..
You ask about the trees..I would not use any herbicides on them if it was me because when they die, the limbs including tree will be falling on everything when you get any wind. I would have them cut down and use that wood. They are charging a fortune just for the chunks of logs. Making stools from them, etc. Saw some with a simple leather seat on just a 3 or 4ft log for over hundred dollars.
I come from a place with no trees and no amount of melons could justify killing such a huge and old tree. Just raise the beds a bit more, dig out all the soil, put a tarp with some gravel ontop and refill it.
Does anyone know why the leaves on my watermelon plant are turning brown and are wilting? I'm growing it in a 5 gallon planter and have a lattice in the bucket and the vines are wrapping around it but the leaves are dark brown and dying. Please can anyone help me figure out why? I live in FL where it's always warm and I water it regularly. Thanks for any help you can give.
Sounds like you may have a fungus issue. Possibly-Hopefully just Downey Mildew or could also be early blight. Both are fungal infections and need to be dealt with asap. Usually preventitive measures are used to stop fungal infections from starting in the first place as they can be hard to stop once they take hold. Trim off all leaves affected and spray leaves with 1Tablespoon Baking Soda/Gallon of water. Be sure to spray the tops and underneath the leaves. Apply once a week. This will slow down the infection but not stop it completely. The objective is to slow the infection enough where the plant growth is much faster than the infection. Supposedly the antifungal product 'Serenade' is very good at completely stopping fungal issues.
why are you entitling your video how to grow melons when you just seem to be walking through your land pointing out how all the melons are not growing ?

Love your watermelon just beautiful. If you don't sell them all you can always donate to your local food bank. Love your sister in Christ.
.....how did you keep your tomatoes for 5 years ?
Randall dill holes in roots in the holes but epsom salts with water. try it, it works on cut tree trunks.
So the way you tell if they are ripe, is if the stem is yellow? And the belly?
chop that sumbich down and burn out the stump! try to make use of the timber if you can. beautiful watermelons. I hope mine do half that well.
just love your videos! don't know how I would grow watermelons in the desert but i'm sure there is a way..haha

It started off as a seed that my son started to grow in class and when it started to grow indoors I put it outside in a planter.

Are you fertile I sing these melons or are you just watering them
what the red flags for in there
tordon will kill your trees, take an ax and cut some deep gashes in the side of the trunk, use a pajntbrush and smear some tordon in the gashes
Wow, someone else who uses marker flags in his melon patch.

Put ice cream salt in the hole drys up the roots.
