'Melissa' was written by Greg Allman and it was one of his brother Duane's favorite songs. When Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident, the rest of the Allman Brothers Band decided to record it for the album they were working on as a tribute to Duane. Vocals are by Gregg and electric guitar is by Dickey Betts who just passed away recently.

But at first, Duane didn't like it, from what I've read.

Thanks, guys. I am so fortunate and grateful to have been a young man during the 70's. My friends and I bonded over the great music on the radio at the time. We couldn't wait to buy the latest albums by our favorite artists. Then, we would listen to them from beginning to end, in deep attention and appreciation. It was a time full of diverse creativity and talent. So many memories.

You're correct there was so much fantastic music in the 70's; as someone who lived during this time I never imagined that music would not equal the quality we consistently had in then. I think today's musicians live in a time when flash, spectacle, dancing, etc. are needed to hide the lack of musical talent and this is now the norm and those with talent can't easily find an audience.

The Allman Brothers were one of the most talented bands, Dickey Betts and Duanne Allman on guitar, 2 drummers, and Gregg on vocals. They were Country, Blues, a little jazz, and always Southern Rock. "Whipping Post" live at Fillmore East is one of the best live songs then.

joy that surrounds this incredible group. Considered the best live band ever. Their Live at the Fillmore East concert is legendary.

I worked for a custom Audio/Video company in the 1990’s. One day I got a work order for Greg Allman, to install a satellite dish. I arrived in the AM, and was greeted at the door by Greg’s medical assistant. Greg came in and we talked briefly about the install. He asked me if I wanted to smoke a joint. (Hell yeah, I said inside my head!) I politely declined and I went about my job. After I finished, I sat with Greg in the Living Room and went over remote control and the satellite. As we talked he opned up about being married to Cher (yes, THAT Cher.) He said his nickname for her was “Toots”. She HATED that nickname. I chuckle every time I think about that day. Magical for me, as Melissa was one of my favorite songs growing up. Love both of you! Peace.

A great song from a great band. I know two different people who named their daughter Melissa because of this song. Completely aside from that, dogs going around in circles before laying down for the night is something in their DNA from their ancestors, the wolves. Wolves did that to pat down the area of ground they would sleep on so there were no sticks or rocks sticking up when they layed down.

Great song from a great band. Allman Brothers Band was so so good, and could play in so many wonderful styles. I would recommend listening to most of Live at the Fillmore East, a classic live album from their peak, but there are many many great studio cuts from other albums. If you want someone maybe a little similar playing now, check out Tedeschi Trucks Band, who have some connections to the Allman Brothers Band. They also are great players, singers, and play authentic true to the heart music in many styles.

OMG, Southern Rock-Jazz Fusion at its finest !!! Great reaction, as usual ... luv you both !!! However, for this band, you MUST try to do the live versions of their songs if you have the choice (this one has none that I know of and IS the definitive one AFAIK), as this is one of a very few bands where the live performances are where they shine ... MORE than on the studio albums. Now, there is an exception ... sort of ... their album Eat A Peach is a combination of studio songs and leftover songs from "At Fillmore East" that didn't fit on that album. Now, as far as other SONGS YOU MUST HEAR before you die ... I'd urge you to do One Way Out, Stormy Monday, Jessica, Ramblin' Man, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, (DEFINITELY) Whipping Post (live At Fillmore East is a "life experience"), Les Brers In A Minor, Blue Sky, Midnight Rider (though the solo Gregg Allman album version is the best one) and You Don't Love Me are the songs you MUST react to !!!

The Allman Brothers are a national treasure and Melissa is one of my absolute favorites. The story goes Gregg Allman was hung up on naming this song for a long while until finally one time in a grocery store at 4am he heard a Spanish lady call to her daughter "Melissa" as she was running away, it was then he realized that was the name he was looking for. He said in an interview with Howard Stern he was so happy he wanted to go over and kiss that lady on the cheek.

The Allman Brothers brought Southern Rock to the streets of America. They're one of the best bands to come out of America. You never go wrong with any Allman Bros. song. Melissa was one of the Allman Brothers best. That whole album - "Eat a Peach" was one of their very best. If you wanna hear how good of musicians the band was, find a listen to "High Falls" - album version. It's prolly too long to react too but it is beyond words good. It's an incredible piece.

So many great tracks from The Allman Brothers any of the live Fillmore tracks, they did make a bunch of Amazing music after Duane passed, they added Warren Hayes in addition to Dickey Betts. Soulshine would be an awesome song for you to react to.

Aha, so The Allman brothers is... a little new, no, kind of new, not, it's new. If this is your 1st exposure to this band, you will truly enjoy more. When it comes to American Southern style rock, they are THE band. I'm biased because I really like them, but I don't think there is an Allman Brothers band that isn't just fabulous. So, the best ones to listen to.... every one. 😀 And yes, my dogs have always done that round and round thing to get comfortable too.

Dogs do that round and round thing before they lie down from instincts bred from when they lived in grasslands and savannas, and they had to tread down the grass to make a nice place to lie down for themselves. Or so I've heard

Hello Andrei & Dominika, since you enjoyed Melissa by the Allman Brothers, I strongly suggest you listen to "Blue Sky" by them too. I think you'll like it. It's one of the happiest songs you'll hear. --- Does that get you interested??? I hope so. I did not see it listed on your channel, so give it a try. Of course, you'll enjoy mpost, maybe all of Allman Brothers, but Blue Sky is one you must hear. Bye and thanks for your reviews. You guys are wonderful.

Melissa is a pretty common American name. Often shortened to Missy.
