    In this video, we learn about the 2020 Oklahoma State Cowboys' offense, run by Kasey Dunn and designed by Mike Gundy. This offense has had an interesting development, with coaches like Larry Fedora, Dana Holgorsen, Todd Monken, Mike Yurcich, and Sean Gleeson all contributing along the way. We'll start with look at Gundy's history with OK State football, starting with his playing days with Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas, and moving into his first coaching job under HC Pat Jones. We'll then see what the offense was like when he came back to OK State as the Offensive Coordinator under Les Miles, and how he and Larry Fedora changed the offense to a 1-back Power Spread/Spread to Run systemwhen Gundy became Head Coach. Finally, we'll see how Air Raid guru Dana Holgorsen added his Air Raid passing game into the offense with players like Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, and how all of these influences showed up in the 2020 offense.

    In the picture of Gundy and coaches, Pat Jones is the coach in the white top on the far right, not the second from the right. And it's Pat Jones, not Patt Jones.

    Great job-would love to see a video on the TCU defense or the Alabama defense.

      A video on TCU's D is just about done! I have plans for Saban soon as well, but the in-season format for these videos will be a little bit different. There'll definitely be some Alabama content this season, though!

      I 100% want to do a 'Venables video. I've got some SEC suggestions that'll probably take me through the rest of the off-season, but when I start doing in-season breakdowns I'll keep an eye out for good Clemson stuff for sure.

    great information once again. Really like your set up with background/history. Didn’t know gundy was the Qb for the cowboys with smith and thruman. But his persona definitely is of former Qb. Keep it up. Would you be interested in doing a weekly College football show ?

      Thanks! The history section here was about twice as long as it normally is, so I'll be curious to see what happens to audience retention at different parts of the video, but Gundy's been around so long and so many big names have passed through that program that it seemed more representative to emphasize that history vs. going in-depth into a kind of disappointing 2020.
      I might be interested in a weekly show at some point, but TH-cam is where I can grow my audience the fastest, and at this point the quickest route that I see to a bigger audience is to just make more videos (less competition in the college film study niche + an abundance of common search terms that bring in a lot of traffic). Unless I could get onto a show that's already built up a big audience (so that the show would bring people to the channel), a weekly show would be something that I'd probably do to monetize this channel once the audience is big enough.

      I've had some Heupel requests, so I'm definitely looking to get him in here. I'm gonna do a swing of some other SEC teams before the season starts (BAMA D, Georgia O, and some others), but maybe I'll look to do a Tennessee vid once we get some 2021 footage!

      @@DatBoiSammyP Yeah, I think Lebby’s married to Briles’s daughter if I remember correctly and learned under him at Baylor. Then Kiffin started to adopt the more explosive spread passing offenses he saw in the AAC at FAU.

    Can you explain why a sort of HB or full back can't be used in the pass game as a vertical threat, i'm interested in running a 2 back sort of offense were i use a RB or a HB in the passing game

    • @TheCoordinatorProject
      @TheCoordinatorProject  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that "can't" would be a strong word, but it's not very common. Once a guy lines up inside of/behind the tackle box, he can't get straight downfield without running through the OL and the defensive front, so he's not going to get the same kind of immediate downfield release that a receiver outside of the tackle box would get. If you want to use him to create a horizontal stretch downfield or something like that, then he's going to be on a different level from the other receivers, and he might not get out cleanly at all if he runs into a blitzer, or an OL gets pushed into his lane by a DL, or a LB grabs onto him as he comes through the box, or whatever, so it's hard to get consistent route distribution and timing for the QB. This is why, when guys go vertical out of the backfield, it'll usually be something that works horizontal at first (like a Wheel), so that he can get out of all of that traffic and get isolated on a LB before turning downfield in a foot race.
      Some teams do a nice job of cheating one or both of those guys toward more of a Wing alignment, letting them get into the Seam with a minimal outside release. If you do that with a RB, then you're probably tipping run/pass by alignment, but it's up to you whether that matters or not. You can do it with an H-Back as long as most of his run-blocking angles are pretty flat or to the outside, but as you pull him farther up and to the outside you do lose certain blocking angles in the run game, so you might be eliminating certain blocking schemes and tipping run/pass, depending on how your ground game is structured.
      Of course, you can always align either a RB or an H-Back outside of the OT, commit to being in a 1-back or Empty set, and send those guys downfield in the passing game all you want, so it's not the personnel that can cause problems, it's just alignment/traffic/timing issues that are caused by sending somebody deep straight out of the backfield.

      Thanks, but What if the back ran a sort of half angle route to the outside of the tackle as a kind of release then ran there route, this would allow either back to not give up there run possiblity and layer there routes because from the sort of half angle , they could run a flat, a sem, or the original stated angle route, as well as other routes in the route tree. Plus the defense can not tell if the back is helping in pass pro or running a route. The only problems I can think of out of this are if the DE beats the OT or theres a blitz that comes by and some of the routes become longer developing ones

      I've had some Heupel requests, but I probably won't get to it before the season starts at this point. The in-season videos will have a little bit different format, but I'll look for content on his Tennessee defense this season for sure! Same for Ole Miss.

    On paper, it doesn't seem like OSU's offense should be having loss plays as often as they seem to happen. What's the source? Poor OL play? Bad QB reads/reluctance to let the QB carry? Overly aggressive RB's who don't mind losing 5 yards here and there if they break 20 yards the next time? Or just the general idea that the run game exists to open up the deep ball?

    • @TheCoordinatorProject
      @TheCoordinatorProject  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just broke down the Iowa State and TCU games, so the sample size is a little small with 8 loss plays between RB's and QB's, but in order of frequency, (1) is that they have trouble with movement, (2) is that they lose playside 1-on-1's, (3a) is that they aren't efficient enough in their combo-blocks to stop backside LB's from climbing playside and getting a numerical advantage, and (3b) is that their backside 1-on-1's are especially bad when the RB has to cut back in the case of (3a). Scheme didn't always help to offset these weaknesses, but a good way to sum all of that up is that they just weren't a very precise Zone blocking team in 2020, haha.
