The difference is Coryell changed and revolutionized offence. He was an original & ahead of his time. There may be a lot of great coaches in the hall of fame, but did they change the game forever like this man? He is a hall of famer. Shame he is not already there.
It;s about time Don Coryell is up for the HOF.. His teams brought some real excitement to the NFL. A true football fan can appreciate Coryell's contribution.

He revolutionized the game… how many coaches are in the hall because of Don? He is long overdue for the Hall.
I'm just happy for his daughter Mindy. We graduated high school, she was a good friend for that year and even though coach coryell only saw me wrestle one time, every time I ran into him over the next twenty years he always remembered and told me he really enjoyed watching me wrestle. Plus I grew up watching him Coach my San Diego State Aztecs one of the most innovative college teams of their time.
Thanks for the very informative background history on one of the games best coaches Jim. Don Coryell is finally enshrined with the best talent the NFL has produced. They all have their gifts and their flaws. We choose to remember the good they brought to the game and Don Coryell's "Air Coryell" will never be forgotten in San Diego. Dan Fouts fought like crazy to get him in before he died - Sadly that didn't happen....but he's in now and forever more....Rip Don Coryell and thanks for the memory's.

This is funny, I live in a remote scottish island, played soccer and rugby and even I know Don Coryell should be in the Hall of Fame.

Coryell is part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
Don Coryell richly deserved HOF honors before he passed. No question about it.

One contribution you forgot was the I-formation created by Coryell as an assistant under McKay at USC when they won the national title. So not only are his contributions still used in the passing game but the rushing game today too
Gibbs and Madden worked their first D1 coaching jobs under Coryell at San Diego State. Gibbs almost quit coaching because he disliked Madden and snapped after John gave Joe shit over hamburger condiments.
Coryell suggested Gibbs move over to offense and the rest is history😮

Coryell fundamentally changed the way football is played in the NFL. He's had more influence on the game than any coach of the last 50 years.
The entire chargers team should be in the hall of fame for going from the epic in Miami to the freezer bowl

Mike, Don Coryell revolutionalized the NFL passing game. He was also a huge influence on Joe Gibbs and John Madden, who were both assistants under Coryell. In addition to his success with the Chargers, he also led the downtrodden St. Louis Cardinals to two NFC East titles in the mid-1970s. He is one of the most important head coaches in NFL history.

Sid Gilman Los Angeles Chargers head coach 1960 was a big part of the modern pass attack and big part of Don Coryell success and one of many talented coaches that came from the Sid Gilman tree.

Not true. Gillman's offenses were closer to Bill Walsh's offense than Coryell's. There was some "cross-pollination" between the Chargers and Aztecs, but the systems were different (until Gillman became OC for the Eagles and adopted Coryell's numbering system). The SDSU Aztecs consistently pulled bigger crowds than the Chargers, and in the same stadium.
