Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm a plant collector and grower here in florida and there is always something popping up in the garden. Practice and patience leads to success. Have a great day
Good job! I really appreciate your videos and your style of presenting. You make it nice and clear. I loved that you pointed out at the beginning that problems happen for everyone!
Excellent info, I use a diagram much like that to diagnose deficiencies in my tanks. I agree with you that learning from it so that it doesn't happen again is the key! Great Vid!
I have tiny black dots on almost all of my plants.. I don’t know why. It doesn’t look like black Algae 😢😢😢 since I added second light ( but light isn’t strong at all)
Nice video and well presented information. I'm very interested in plants but I figure I have fish tanks with plants in them versus a planted tank that has fish. I'm trying hard to balance the needs of the fish (territory markers in particular) with something aesthetically pleasing. Going to check out your other videos - subscribed. Thanks for posting this!
Excellent video. I agree with your approach to diagnosing and treating your nutrient deficiency. It's very methodical. As someone who doesn't grow plants very well, I will adopt your method of treating plants. Although, I think in my case, the limiting factor is improper ligthting, but I want to completely rule out nutrient deficiency. Thanks for posting.
Raccoon Creek Aquatics You're welcome, and thanks for your reply. I have the Hagen Glo T5 High Output dual light strip, which is providing 78 watts over a 50 gallon tank. The bulbs are kind of old so it's probably not outputting as well as it usd to. I'm growing mostly java fern so 1.5 watts per gallon is just cutting it for now. I'll have to add more lighting if I ever move on to plants that require more light.
This is very helpful info. Thanks for the video. Do you keep a supply of the Seachem fertilizers or do you mix and match? I've just started my first 'planted' tank and am so far just using Seachem Comprehensive fertilizer. Is that a good way to start? Have you ever successfully planted a goldfish tank? I' d love to try it but don't want to be feeding them expensive plants! I do give them lots of fruit and vegies but... Would you try it yourself?
Great video , Great information on plant needs specially for new plant keepers like me , i trying to learn ahead of time to prevent from happening . Tks
hey man, i am going thru staghorn algae bloom and my tank is about 6 weeks ish. people keep saying it is iron deficient but most of my plants are not yellowing. i am also going through GSA and diatoms/brown hair algae (which is taken care of by Ottos). any ideas what i should do?
Do you have an email address I could send some pictures to? I've got a 15gal and my S. repens is looking kinda sad. small with most of the bottom leaves gone, leaving them looking like little palm trees. Could it be the cory cats fault?
Fishhunter2014 it is definitely a deficiency. From your description, it sounds like either a nitrogen or phosphorus deficiency. I use seachem nitrogen and seachem phosphorus for my s repens
+No Rocket Science Build I don't really clean the substrate like you would a normal gravel bottom aquarium. I just hover over the plants and get what I can. This seems to get the worst of the detritus. As long as you get a good amount of it, you will be fine. The stuff you won't get can help feed the plants
My plants leaves are turning black and cut them but again new leaves are also turning black. How can i cure it and what's wrong that they are turning black?
@@RaccoonCreekAquatics good point but overdosing may cause more problem that buy a 20 dollar kit for testing iron. Additionally, asking for a copy of water analysis to your water supply company is free and help to understand what may be missing from your tap water and just focus on those first. thanks
Dear Jake: This hobby has a science to it. The most important aspects of my, aquarist hobby are the health and happiness of the species that I keep. Thank you for sharing this, very important information regarding nutrient deficiencies in aquatic plants. Right away I see that I probably had a potassium deficiency because my anubias used to have holes in the leaves. This problem appears to have been solved, however, as they no longer have holes. I’ve been using better fertilizers since then. Keep up your, great work. You advice is a tremendous asset for the FishFam Community. Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
+E. J. Brinegar thank you so much for the encouragement! I want to show what really happens! I'm not perfect, and I want that to reflect on my channel! It's not that you develop a deficiency, it's how you react to it.
Nitrogen deficiency, couldn’t a larger fish load produce more nitrogen? Could this happen with to many frequent water changes? You have quite a bit of plants so you probably need to dose a little of all the nutrients by now. Good video though just raises a lot of questions for me though, sorry.
+Aqua Apprentice yeah, increasing the fish load could help and I was considering getting more Cardinals. I do dose a variety of ferts. I increased my dosage of nitrogen and iron and the plants that we're suffering recovered. I'm not really sure what changed in the tank that could have caused it. I appreciate you watching man!
I think that's where I'm confused. Aren't nitrates and nitrogen correlated? So if you had a nitrogen deficiency, then if you tested for nitrates, wouldn't it be zero ppm? Something like that?
This is my understanding. Yes nitrogen and nitrates correlate and typically a deficiency would give you either a 0 or low read out of nitrates. You don’t necessarily need to get more fish either to increase the nitrates they produce, you could also feed more as long as it’s not over feeding them. Plants can be complicated though because once you run out of one nutrient your plants stop growing until in can consume more of the deficient nutrient. With nitrogen deficiency the plant will go into survival mode and consume the nitrogen from the old leaves to feed the new, thus the yellowing on the old leaves. Hope this helps 😁
Planted tanks and saltwater tanks are so similar in terminology “Nutrients deficiency” etc I agree it’s all in how you handle it But the Bruce Lee pants on and get splashing! My like and support 👍🏽
Deon 0026 thanks man! I think saltwater is a bit more difficult, but I agree there are so many similarities! Reefers deal with nutrient and mineral deficiency kinda like plant keepers! I really appreciate your support! 😎
i clean my substrate once a week, ill stop for a month, my amazon sword melted and my others leaves had to be trimmed cause of melting, my anubias is fine though? i likely have an iron deficiency and one leaf may have an old potassium deficiency, it is clearing yup though. is there any way to increase iron without hurting snails from risk of copper?
+Mason's Fish Gallery I know you told me what the substrate was, but can you remind me? Amazon swords a big root feeders. It's possible maybe it wasn't getting enough food at the roots or enough lighting. What lights do you have in your tank? Anubias can stay happy under low light conditions. I dose Seachem Iron. I have shrimp in the tanks I use it in and the shrimp are good to go. Just be careful not to overdose.
Good info, big smiley guy, everything outstanding, but do yourself a favour and ditch that music! It's awful and too loud mate. Best of luck to ya and thanks for your help.
Man, you can't compare a leaf deficiency diagram made for terrestrial plants with plants put into water because you have to understand that root exchange is different than beeing in a bath of nutrient. In planted tanks you have to first, look at symptoms, then check every parameters with water tests and afterwards, find a conclusion. As you said, a deficiency could be anotherone in fact. I don't say you were wrong, just that your methodology has to be different for aquarium plants.
The chart you shared was incredibly helpful and opened up a new rabbit hole to explore with plant care. I greatly appreciate it!

Did you dose a specific fertiliser to fix the issues or just used a all in one

excellent video, I think getting rid of that water lettuce would have also helped as it was probably what was sucking all the nutrient from that tank.
Thank you so much the chart helped me confirm I have atleast a nitrate or phosphate deficiency
What is the issue when the leaves are melting/becoming clear and dying
May I ask the type of lighting you have? How long you keep it running?
+Viola Hops a lot I have 2 LED current pro plus light fixtures on this tank. I have the lights on for 7.5 hours

@raccooncreek, where are you from, PA????? I live in weirton, a raccoon creek is near me.
I am in Northwest Ohio. A raccoon Creek runs through my town. I've heard of the one in Pennsylvania though.
My aquatic plants are turning brownish black and are dieing, can u please tell what is the problem and which nutrient is deficient in this case.
try giving them co2 then if no result than pottassium iron liquid ferts
It's a Potassium deficiency lol

would not be better to detect deficiency by measuring with test kit in stead of guessing by comparing it with a drawing?
Beginners may not have a test kit, or the funds to buy one
