You were lucky you got 4 channels. In some parts of London and some towns like Milton Keynes you needed Cable. Terrestrial TV whether it was analogue or digital does not cover the whole country, it only covers around 70%. Some people stuck in areas like mine had communal satellite dishes but they are not that good especially if you live within a valley. So back in 1997, you had to choose between a really bad quality Channel 5 via an aerial or a really grainy BBC1 on Analogue Cable. For some reason BBC1 on Analogue Cable wherever you were was always grainy and it sometimes did the same on BBC News 24
