My aunt use to work in CISF aka Central Industrial Security Force in Sriharikota Range(SHAR) from early 90's to early 2k. She was the personal Secretary for the director who runs the CISF unit. She got lot of privileges in the campus. Myself & my cousin brothers enjoyed lot of it. There is nothing there inside to see except the quarters, a school, temple & some shops. We are not allowed to enter the rocket launch pads. It's a restricted area. Even the beach along the island is guarded by Coastal Guard. My cousin brother witnessed first launch of PSLV aka Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket in the year 1995(i guess) after that i got invited by my aunt to witness the PSLV rocket launch 3 times between 1996-1999. First time i saw a rocket being launched from couple of km away. Instantly i told my aunt, 'Chiti deepavali rocket vidraanga' anaa ippo diwali illayea? Everyone laughed. Unfortunately couldn't see the GSLV aka Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle coz my aunt got transferred in mid of 2000 to Mumbai.
Interesting fact about Sriharikota(i forgot to add): Our Sriharikota rocket launch center is almost equal to Cape Canaveral, Florida USA. Most lot of successful launches happened in both places. Geographically both places are best places on Earth to launch rockets. Not sure what kind of theory behind it. Any one knows about it, please comment under my post.

Even though the rotation of earth is at constant speed , the landmass near equator experiences faster rate of rotational speed and as you move towards the poles be it north or south the speed reduces. So ideally launching a satellite as close to equator is an ideal option as you get additional launch velocity free of cost and saves some fuel. This is same as throwing a ball while at still when compared to from a moving vehicle.
Btw even now you can view rocket launches from Sriharikota, they have built a watch gallery and registration passes are available to book online in ISRO website. I have visited couple of times before Covid. I luckily got a chance to view GSLV mk3 launch for Chandrayaan 2 up close from the gallery
