- Turkey's Big Three of Besiktas, Fenerbahce, and Galatasaray have long reigned supreme in the Turkish Super Lig, winning 55 of a possible 62 league titles.
All three clubs hail football mad city of Istanbul, but now there is a third team from Turkey's largest city that are making a splash.
Istanbul Basaksehir have been immensely competitive since being taken into state ownership in 2014, and this season the club won their first Super Lig title.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at Istanbul Basaksehir, a club with a number of former Premier League stars in their ranks, virtually no fans, and close ties to Turkey's higher-ups that has raised suspicion among many rival clubs. - กีฬา
Saw this team play at home with a few friends while backpacking in Turkey in 2017. The stadium was mostly empty except for the rowdy Besiktas fans who filled the entire away section, and who made the most noise as you can imagine.
The only home supporters seemed to be a few casual fans who appeared to be from the nearby housing complexes. The only time I heard noise from Basaksehir section was when a few of the Besiktas supporters took off their kits to pose as the home fans just to get nice and close to the keeper to abuse him 😂😂

As a Turk I just want to say thank you for making this video. So many points brought up on the topic so well researched and even delved into the politics in such a way for just a football video. Some points were missed out but they don't have to be said but just gotta put them here
1.The match played by the people shown on 7:26 was actually huge because show this photo to any Turkish citizen and they would be able to name at least 10 of the players. I'm not just gonna list everyone one by one but the man crouching at the front 3rd from the right is Acun Ilıcalı, basically the most well known entertainer of Turkey. To make it a bit clearer he owns a TV station called TV8 and brought all the well known competition shows (The Voice, Survivor, Masterchef etc.) to Turkey. Thanks to this he owns possibly the most watched channel in Turkish television. You might say "What's wrong with him bringing all that stuff and earning money off it?" and I would say absolutely nothing except if the channels news didn't post fake news in order to promote Erdogan. This is just one of the people on the team and the rest are almost just as influential in Turkey.
2. Erdogan playing for Kasımpaşa was mentioned but him trying to back the team financially just as the same way as Başakşehir wasn't mentioned. As he was born and raised in that district he had a bond with the team and the area so presumably payed for the construction of a new stadium for them a few years ago, which is now named after him. Kasımpaşa was a dangerous team and still is doing decent in the league but a few years back they were formidable opponents. Even though they didn't manage to finish on the top levels of the league the amount of referee decisions in their favor was just disgusting. After Erdogan realised that Kasımpaşa's potential wasn't good enough he turned to Başakşehir because the plan is to sell the club for an immense amount of money to Qatarian investors.
3. 2800ish average attendance for them is also somewhat a lie because some people who watch the matches aren't even fans. Of course you can just go to a stadium pay for a ticket and watch a football match as just a fan of the sport but most of the people attending were there for a completely different reason: money. That's right some people who attended matches gave interviews and said that they were PAID to watch the game in the stadium. Many people have also come clean about being offered money to watch the games so that the club seems like they at least have somewhat of a fanbase but in reality this team truly doesn't have ANY loyal fans whatsoever.
P.S. This is probably going to be the weirdest compliment I've ever given but this video will probably be banned in Turkey in a very short period of time. So well researched and so nicely summed up thank you for this video HITC.

As a Galatasaray supporter i must say this season all 4 big teams in turkey (Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe ,Beşiktaş ,Trabzonspor ) have lost so many points just because of referees and people who Shouldn’t be involved in sports like the president ,team supporters from the big teams are now saying this season was a disgrace for turkish football.Because the tff(turkish football federation) wanted Başakşehir to be champions and now they are going to sell the team (Başakşehir)to rich buisnessman from qatar.

Back in the top right now, playing good football, not a fan of this club, I am a passionate Fenerbahce fan, but at the moment Basak plays better football than the traditional big three clubs, including Trabzonspor. Have to be honest about this.

Brother, thank you very much for this video. I'm from Turkey, I am a huge Football fan who is very invested in Football with time and emotions. I'm a one of those people who hates Başakşehir (yes, people since not just Football fans hate Basaksehir and their sponsors). This is a great video I loved every second of it that being said I would like to add some small details, although the stage was set for Basaksehir to bring in a cup in terms of monetary support (both financial and financial regulations), they did it this year without any obvious support or interventions from the officials and they did play great Football with Okan Buruk as head coach throughout the season (who is an up-and-coming coach with a cup under his name despite never coaching big 3, now he has 2 cups). Fenerbahce and Galatasaray (7th and 6th, respectively) shot themselves on foot with very bad transfers and worse transfer and budgeting planning, (also Fenerbahce wasn't allowed to make a transfers mid-season because of another political non-sense which they should have seen and did better moves pre-season, they had only 3 CBs and 1 LB who got injured pre-season) (also Galatasaray spend to much time and money on signing Falcao), Besiktas had been planing for the future with a new coach (who was Basaksehir's old coach) but they didn't give him enough time, sacked him (the replacement did far better by the way) and also they were bankrupt, they can barely pay salaries of squad. So in their place Trabzonspor was the obvious contender who also were being supported by the government and the support they had received were very obvious on the pitch with ghost penalties with VAR, creating fouls before positions ended with goals, but they too shot themselves on the foot with firing their 3 years coach (rumor has it he was fired because he talked back to a minister) and appointing a very inexperienced coach who was one of the assistant coach of the predecessor. If you can please make a video about Trabzonspor or/and TFF. Thank you again!!!

Great video guys! As a turkish football fan, I want to give you guys some insight about this season. Funny thing about this season is Erdogan’s son-in-law(minister of economy) openly supports the runner-up Trabzonspor(TS). In the first half of the season, TS was tearing the league apart, hell people were thinking that Haaland wasnt the best norwegian striker right now, but Alexander Sorloth is. But I believe they lost a match bad nearing the end of first half, the minister of economy called the coach and said something like “Why is the team not playing?” And the coach replied with something like “Why is turkish economy so bad right now?” Well lo and behold, TS’ best coach in almost 10 years got sacked overnight, and they gave away the silverware. Hell they were 4 points ahead going into the last two matches. Politics should play no role in sports, especially in Turkey.
As for the reason of hate against IBB, I am a Besiktas fan, I waited 2 years for our stadium. The travel time to the replacement was 3 hours(still in Istanbul btw) and the construction has been stopped 2 times by the government for no reason at all. We sold our star striker Cenk Tosun for 28mil, and two years later we are almost bankrupt. IBB on the other hand, their only big sell was Cengiz Ünder to Roma for 15mil, and yet they dont face any financial problems, even though they have 4k avg attendance on 20Tl ( 2.5-3 €) tickets (Besiktas had 30k on 15€ tickets), and their wage budget is on par with the 3 big clubs in Istanbul. Something does not add up there.

After that President Erdoğan saved them and he talked Platini so many times. And another fact that this channel forgot to mention, after başakşehir selled Cengiz Ünder 14 m € to Rome they bought +20 players including adebayor, clichy. And they said that they did all of that with the money that came from Cengiz.

I didn't know Basaksehir was that despised
They were until this season. They were heavily funded by the mayor of İstanbul which was selected by the current ruling party. Last year they lost the election to the opposition party and their selection cut all of the fundings to the başakşehir. They may have gotten a strong support from the start but they always had a great diplomacy to run the club too. This season many people expected them to finish maybe 5th or 6th but definitely not 1st. They had a great campaign and at the end of the season everyone but trabzonspor fans supported them.
They're not.. this video is an exaggeration and outright propaganda against a fairly elected president. Shameful.

I am a Fenerbahce supporter and despite Fenerbahce's bad performance, I am quite glad that Basaksehir has won the title. I know that there are a lot of Galatasaray and Besiktas supporters who think the same as I do.
And they even let their Europa League game against F.C. Copenhagen continue WITH A PACKED STADIUM, claiming that there were no COVID-19 cases in Turkey.
Eagerly awaiting the 2nd leg without fans at Copenhagen's stadium ("Parken").. if only we (Copenhagen) had a better team.

You are wrong. As someone who lives in Turkey I'll have to say that compared to other countries, the virus reached Turkey way later. And back in the day when the first leg of that match was about to be played, there was no covid yet in Turkey. After covid reached Turkey the league has been paused and after a while they continued the league without having fans in the stadiums. In regards of information you are on the wrong side. And besides, Basaksehirs fan support is pretty pretty low compared to other clubs in Turkey. Therefore it's not that significant if there are fans or not.
You have a good chance. Başakşehir is a very old team, and the compressed schedule will have take its toll.

In addition he found the club and Basaksehir is his club, even the colors are matching with his political party. Any one can assume AKParti (which he found) win the championship.

@Haakon Lehn first of all Erdoğan still influencing Kasımpaşa. It’s the neighborhood where he grew. Kasımpaşa A.Ş. (A.Ş=Associated Company) is a company also their shares are traded in stock market, so their books are open financially. On the other hand Başakşehir S.K. (S.K.=Sports Club) is a regular club and they don’t need to open their financials so it’s easy to gave money to Başakşehir. For instance everything Medipol paid for Başakşehir they can get it back as a tax refund because they are as a company sponsoring a club. There was a team before 2014 called Istanbul buyuksehir belediye spor which means Municipality of Istanbul football club. The name is being changed because no one will support the municipal team. But no one has an emotional connection to a newly formed county. Even Başaksehir citizens supports big threes.
So what we have to know is, galatasaray, Beşiktaş and fenerbahçe founded at Ottoman Empire so before Turkish Republic. And they re still sport teams. When people born early 1900's they just heard this big threes and the emotional connection was formed till our generation. Istanbul Başaksehir is against this connection because it's supported by government.

As a someone who watch turkish league and cup games a lot i need to say that turkish league became what italian seria a was in 2005,bunch of games that goes 0-1 at half time.and end 3-1 (fixed games) and some really bad refeere decision ,

@@shesho6666 Özil was nowhere near being the most important of our players. It is obvious now that he just played for Germany for personal gains, since you can't win anything with Turkey. Özil was really great from ~ 2010-2013 and that's it. He wasn't even German citizen until he turned 18, although he was born in Germany. In my opinion that shows how his family is standing to Germany in general. They didn't even speak German at home in Germany! I guess you watched the video. Such a person who interferes in matters no president should have business with.

Also, the issues of political corruption don't only happen in clubs but in the Fifa federation itself since they choose where The World Cups are going to be based on the amount of money paid. Politics as no place in football, that's why you didn't see Cristiano or Messi talking about it, their job is to play, not to get into the dirty world of politics. This doesn't mean that all kind of politics is bad, anti-discrimination and pro-health are actually two good things that should be promoted in football because they are problems that affect the football community very much more directly.
Update: After AKP has lost Istanbul mayoral elections, in 2020-21 season Başakşehir finished the league in 12th place, just 8 points away from relegation. :)

The 'Real' part in a team stands for the King of Spain during the baby steps of Spanish Clubs. Clubs like Madrid/Deportivo/Celta/etc had Alfonso XIII (a football maniac) as a honourary president and so the state would give some benefits

Man, politics and football are very linked, it's merely impossible to separte them. From racism, to big political leaders using football clubs to support their agenda, to the rivalries between teams based on their political ideologies such as lazio and Torino, etc.

i see basaksehir as a young talent camp of turkey. the big 4 in süper lig werent really good at promoting the talents and make them a really good football player.
