Very sad to learn that Freddy Marks has died aged 71. The fun and music of the fantastically talented Rod, Jane and Freddy made Rainbow all the more brighter. Happy memories.
Getting old really suxs but we all are but we with this tho As a kid we had the show on 10minutes it felt like 20 can't complain but that's what i think. But speed nowadays with devices and tablets time is flying way to fast days merge into weeks, and weeks into months etc even years blink by coming to the end of it our lives a short life that's packs a punch we will never understand what's it's all about.Least we let it out here on You Tube
I well remember Rainbow in my formative years. Now in my early fifties, looking back in nostalgia. My musical memory is very good - the theme tune is in D major, then changes to E major!
Just saw lots of comments suddenly arriving on this video saying RIP Geoffrey. That's how I heard about it. What a sad day. Paint that sky with a big bright rainbow, Geoffrey. We'll always remember you. Love and thoughts to those closest to him.
Calm your shit. Im only saying that I loved rainbow as a kid... (and actually I wasn't raised around 'modern music' I was raised around The Beatles and The Smiths etc.)
IForgotMyOldTH-camSoNowIHaveThis Nice of you to be so cliched as to not believe me. It's not like someone saying that they aren't serious legitimately means they're not serious is it? No, no. That's terribly uncommon.
RIP Geoffrey Hayes, a valued part of the Rainbow team. I fondly remember watching this fun series, mostly during early years class at primary school. God, what good memories! Geoffrey enjoyed help making this programme just as many of us enjoyed watching it. I'm sorry he's gone, but always remembered. A nice fellow giving Rainbow a brighter face - but even he could be tested by Zippy's naughty antics!
anyone else notice an unexpected dark tone creeping into the familiar, superficially cheerful childrens program them tune, starting at 0.43. the contrast between sunrise, and its bright new colours (ie youth), the second about sunset and fading colours.(aging and death). rather wonderfully melancholy and poignant.
Great theme song and great programme. Children's TV rocked back then. Geoffrey was really good in this. Heard yesterday that he passed away. RIP Geoffrey, and thanks for all the memories.
Competition wasn't far off early 70s still so much didn't make Charts doesn't matter anywhere in the World lots of good songs don't,themes u name it any genre deserves but we can enjoy with endless researching the stuff we love or part of or know of
Rainbow was pure magic that will be engrained on many of our minds forevermore. I feel sorry for the kids of the last two or three decades as I don't think they've had anything that comes remotely close. RIP Geoffrey Hayes and the joy you brought us, may the legend of Rainbow live forever.
Geoffrey used to work in my local supermarket in Acton.. such a nice guy....... Ive always said Zip[py should have had his own spin off series... late night Zippy... that would have kicked!!
na what was he like. he always seemed very down to earth, did he enjoy being recognized as geoffrey. if i worked with him i whould have probarbly pissed him off with my zippy impressions lol.
Great to hear the full version, very nostalgic. Life was simpler being a child and this track is a great anchor for memories long ago. It got me thinking of other kids TV shows, such as Chocky, great soundtrack to that one.
pure quality, uplifting, with a thoughtful, almost beguiling interlude, capturing those sacred shades from ultra to infra, gleaming upon us, making Technicolor a monochrome world...
vasquez109 - It was written and performed by a group called TellTale, who were the original house-band on the first series of Rainbow. TellTale were replaced by Rod, Jane & Matthew (later Roger, then Freddy) but the TellTale theme tune was retained.
You couldn't get a more 70's theme song 😂 I've never ever heard this full version so thank you. I loved Rainbow and Zippy was my favourite, I even had a Zippy and George teddy
Jesus, this could have been recorded by gabriel era-genesis or jethro tull. Its actually that out there. Im axtually suprised by the musicality and harmonies. Damn did I over analyse?
Must admit I'm here because of sad Geoffrey news but it must be a great feeling knowing you inspired & brought fun into Childrens hearts that last forever even when they grow old!
Yeah but "adventure time", "Gumball", and "gravity falls" are from 2010-. Also We bare bears isn't even that bad. Definitely not on the same level as Uncle grandpa.
I grew up watching this... and only now do I hear the full version of this song. It's actually quite a beautiful arrangement. Love the key change; it goes quite dark :D
I remember this when it was originally aired weekdays lunchtime on ITV in the 1970s. Used to come home for lunch it was there on at 12.10. great staple TV for a young kid growing up then.
Nostalgia! I remember seeing this when i was just in and out of kindergarten in '93 and '94. Dad had got a VHS tape from when my parents were living in UK along with my older sister. Was born in UK shortly before coming here to India.
Born as a 2000's kid, felt like a 90's kid, I will miss you, Geoffrey Hayes and Freddy Marks Edit: this song sounds like something Little Big Planet would have
The theme song for the show was written by Hugh Portnow, Lady Hornsbrie, Hugh Fraser and Tim Thomas of the band Telltale, who regularly appeared in the first two seasons of the show.
Takes me right back to my formative years. I like the flute solo in the tune and used to sing Paint the whole world with a rainbow! I am musical and can sing!
This was long before my generation, but I think the original version of Rainbow is far better than the reboot “Rainbow Days”, even though the original version ended before I was born.
Love Rainbow on the TV here in New Zealand "Up above the streets and houses, rainbow climbing high, Bungo sticks his bum out the window and shits in Geoffrey's eye. Paint the whole world with a rainbow.
Gonna tell you an interesting fact. Alas, I don't know the 2 people involved, but I believe it is true! A Woman was humming the theme tune, as above, & her newly wed Husband said, "I wrote this song AND played the flute"!!! I don't know how you can check it, but I know it's true & the 'Woman' is a famous actress! ....Help me someone!
+Martyn Timmis probably Belinda Lang, of '2point4 Children' fame. She's married to the actor Hugh Fraser, who co-wrote the song. He was a guitarist back then, but could quite easily have been a flautist too...
I was born in 2003 and this was one of my all time favourite shows, I still have a giant teddy of zippy in the loft (it’s bloody huge it’s like bigger than an average 6 year old)

Loved this programme x

It's a tragedy beyond tragedies

Oh man thats sad. Loved watching rainbow 🌈🌈🌈 as a kid...
I'm 47 now
Everyone here is talking about how they're 80s babies and this was their childhood, I was born in 2001 and THIS WAS MY SHIT!
Yeah but since you were born in 2001 you were subject to awful music and increased tension in the Middle East you fucking millennial

I always chose home dinners when I was in primary school in the late 70’s so I could go home and watch the lunchtime edition of Rainbow.
vasquez109 - It was written and performed by a group called TellTale, who were the original house-band on the first series of Rainbow.

A nostalgic trip back to the good old 1980s. Time has flew by too soon.
70s for me, I watched this in the early 70s onwards as a kid.

TheAxePhysicsDude No, Just an interest in music!
+TheAxePhysicsDude if it had been recorded by Jethro Tull, it would have been the best thing they ever recorded, by quite some margin.
Not so sure about George the pink hippo - I suspect he bats for both teams.
unlike Bungle. he only bats for one team - the entire team though..
No, if so then he'd be coloured purple.
R.I.P MR GEFFREY HAYES THANK YOU FOR MY CHILDHOOD. XXXXXXXX

Loved this when I was little, we had good kids tv in the 80's. Kids tv these days is absolute garbage, today's kids are so unfortunate
+Sean Lewis Even though I was born in 2002, I still watched this as a small kid, I think I was the last generation to do so.
Glad you discovered it. There's plenty of other gems from the 70's and 80's floating around on TH-cam as well
+Sean Lewis not really 2010- is probably the best for animation since the 90's
Ethan Holmes What with things like 'uncle grandpa' and 'we bare bears'... Don't know if I agree
Yeah but "adventure time", "Gumball", and "gravity falls" are from 2010-. Also We bare bears isn't even that bad. Definitely not on the same level as Uncle grandpa.
I was born in 1993. And I watched this. So it isn't "just for 70s and 80s kids"
i used to watch this on nick jr classics when i was about three same with paddington bear And button moon

Yep...Hugh Portnow, Hugh Fraser and Tim Thomas of the band Telltale recorded this!
And I never knew that Capt. Hasting of Poirot fame was a musician!

As a musician in the 1970s in the folk-rock band Telltale, Fraser played on and co-wrote the theme song for the British children's program Rainbow.

It's SO seventies lol. You could tell me this was a Steeleye Span track and I would believe you
Apparently the guy that sings this is the same guy who plays Bungle. I can't confirm that, of course. It sounds like him, though.
