- I am finally tackling this BEHEMOTH and I am totally here for it. Part two is coming next week! I can't wait. The drums and vocals stood out SO much to me. This is a totally different sound then what I have heard from them so far and I honestly really like the change.

I'll tell you I got lucky enough to be alive to see this performed live, along with Yes, Tales from Topographic Oceans, J. Tull, A Passion Play and ELP, Brain Salad Surgery, all within like a year or so, what a life, there were a lot more.

I am trying to figure out why Tony Banks 'didn't understand the lyrics' and why the other band members were upset because Peter wrote all of the lyrics ... were they afraid of losing royalties? They were all involved and credited for composition and arrangment, i really don't get it. I understood this release on the very day I first got the album and listened to it ffrom beginning to end and sat there reading the lyrics AND the story laid out on the inner gate-fold sleeve. I think there were just alot of people who don't want to pay too much attention to lyrics, because if they did, they would notice that Tony and Mike's lyrjcs suck and Phil's lyrics are all about break-ups and self pity....hmm
Glad they didn't get any lyrical input on The Lamb.
The beginning of a complex and dark journey, don't be surprised at the magnificence of this collection. Nothing is anything like it.

It's amazing how this album follows Selling England and yet everything about it is different. Some bands cannot help sounding the same but Genesis purposely sounds absolutely different album after album, yet oddly enough, we can always immediately recognize them as Genesis when we hear them no matter how different the output. People dare to complain of the later changes but that was always their theme -"what do we do next?" They tackled Prog in so many ways through 7 or 8 albums, where else were they to go without turning into a mess trying to recreate their past. Thankfully they kept moving forward -never backward.
That's what I like so much about them. They always change with each album. It's always something COMPLETELY different then the last. And that's hard to do, over and over and over. They are beyond talented. I love them so much.
Epic! Just a sidenote, if you read the liner notes, you will see the word ENOCIFICATION. Yes, Brian Eno put a few touches on this album!

I think this was Peter's last album with the group - his Swan Song. I seem to remember reading that Peter was being courted by Hollywood, based on his Live stories that he would recite during shows. I also seem to remember reading that this album was, potentially, going to be made into a film.

One of the greatest albums of all-time. Definitely my favorite Genesis release.
Sometimes Steve Hackett still tours with his band and it's awesome. Singer sounds like Gabriel. Also there's a great cover band called The Musical Box. Don't miss either of these bands if they're nearby. I remember reading the story of Real and his dream while listening to this masterpiece. The lyrics are on the inside when you open up the double album.
Haven't seen Hackett, unfortunately, but The Musical Box are a brilliant tribute act. Members of Genesis have signed off on their work and been very complimentary of them.

Saw them perform the entire album - plus Watcher of the Skies and The Musical Box - back in 1974 when I was 17. A great record, full of superb playing (what a drummer Phil Collins was) but also gorgeous melodies such as The Carpet Crawlers and Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats. Selling England...remains my favourite Genesis album, though.

One of my top 10 albums of all time, totally incredible. I'd go into my local vinyl record shop each week to see if it was out yet, there was a delay to its release... Imagine my joy when it finally did! 😊 It was the final album with Peter, then Phil took over lead vocals.
I'm not even really a huge Genesis fan, but this is my favorite prog rock album by far. I love this record
I saw that live in Montreal at the Forum of Montreal back in the 70s....been so long, i forgot what year but i remember parts of the show ! so it was the second time i saw Genesis ! first time was in 1974 at the University s sport center in Montreal and it was also broadcasted on the radio live at CHOM FM 97.7 the Spirit of Montreal ! ha yes...the good old time ! I m so glad not only my memories are what i have still but i discovered that someone recorded the show and post it on YT.! Easy to find ! thanks for reading my comment ! 😎

To answer your question/comment: The Lamb album came out in 1974, a year after Selling England (Firth of Fifth, etc,), & was the last album with Peter Gabriel before he left to go solo. Having been unable to find an apt replacement, Phil Collins, who had already been singing backing vocals, tried some lead. ..And the rest is history...
Their next album was A Trick of the Tail (1976), the one with Dance on a Volcano on it. This was followed by the album Wind & Wuthering (1976), their last studio album with Steve Hackett on guitar. Steve left after their tour in 1977 (when they recorded the live album, Seconds Out), hence the title of their 1978 album, ...And Then There Were Three. After a break when they all made solo albums, Duke came next in 1980. It wasn't until 1981 that Abacab was released.
Incidentally, you might enjoy Steve Hackett's solo stuff, particularly the album, Spectral Mornings. I saw Steve & his band live last year. It was the 50th anniversary of the Foxtrot Album & while the first half of the set was his solo stuff, for the 2nd half they played Foxtrot in its entirety, complete with Suppers Ready. The first encore was Firth of Fifth!
The protagonist of this epic album is Rael, a Nuyorican, (a person of Puerto Rican ancestry born in New York City) which is why there are so many references of New York City in the songs.

The transition towards Abacab came later. The album “And Then They Were Three” represented the change

They toured this in '74 just as the album was out for release. So when I saw them do it in Edinburgh that year none of us knew it. It was amazing, but pretty hard to sit through. Very theatrical though as you quite rightly observe. Gabriel's Slipperman costume was from another world :o) Discovered it again in '88! Love it now. Listen to it in the car. First rate driving material. Elf elf elf.
@L33Reacts you gotta see a picture of Gabriel's Slipperman costume. Sadly this tour wasn't officially recorded live. There are pictures, small video parts available on internet and some not official audio, but any of the things I mentioned has got an awful quality. Peter changed his costume many times during the show, representing the part of the album that they were performing, and the Slipperman, you gotta see it. Elf!
I heard this album 41 years ago. You said in your comments that the end of side A you don’t know what the Lamb is yet. When Rael sees the lamb lay down on Broadway, that is what starts this whole series of events, or dreams, or hallucinations. It gets the ball rolling. I guess it could have been a Leprechaun 🍀 or an elf. It does mention lambs wool one more time at the beginning of a very beautiful hypnotic song. You’ll know it when you hear it.
I think the Lamb is more a symbol of Rael's innocence trying to be awakened. Yes, the Lamb starts his journey.
This was the last Genesis album with Peter Gabriel. Phil Collins became lead vocalist on the subsequent albums.
My first concert!! Drums, Bass, Gabriels Voices/Performance/Drama. Bass Pedals, TONY on Keys, Just All Awesome...including Steve Hackett. This is a Prog concept album extraordinaire!

Probably the best prog album ever, and from the timeframe when prog went downhill afterwards. This is the peak. You also have to read the lyrics while listening and the story in the album fold.

Phil Collins is really sadly overlooked for being an amazing drummer, as all the early Genesis stuff shows. As well as his stuff with Brand X.
My favorite drummer of all time.
I saw them in concert three times post Gabriel in the late 70s and early 80s. When they used to do the song In the Cage, it was pretty cool because all the flood lights would instantly come down around Collins, like bars of a cage every time he sang the line “in the cage“. It’s depicted on the cover of Seconds Out.
Elf? Is that flee spelled backwards? But we're hooked on this record now, too late to flee. Glad to be experiencing this with you. This album had to grow on people over the years. When an interviewer mentioned how universally loved it is by Genesis fans Phil said "Well, not when it came out."

oh this'll be good , i can't get enough of folk gettin' this album for the first time..., the lamb is up there with Stg peppers and Dark Side of the moon.
The Lamb and Tommy are my two favorite concept LP's. Though it is a dark LP, it is expertly crafted and the musicianship is stellar.

Great stuff here, L33. It's cool you can appreciate this remarkable, singular work by a brilliant band, imo. It's an epic trip, but well worth it. Also, the title track and "In the Cage" are my favorites from side one as well.

OK, I've strapped in, I've taken my meds, gotta cuppa T (Assam, no messing), and off I go! Genesis dragged, kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Creative genius at its best. Just gonna go with the jetstream of imagery in this movie for my ears.
Double concept album so yes it's one big story courtesy of Peter Gabriel who wrote it. Sadly it's likely what caused him to leave the band but it's still one of my favorite albums.
Loving your take on these Genesis and RUSH tracks. I'm 61 so I got to hear them all as they came out. You remind me of how I felt listening for the first time.
You should get used to all of the lamb then listen to Phil's take on seconds out. It's different but great.

I have a feeling that Gabriel was referring to John Lennon when he says "Brother John is No. 9" but I don't know why if that's the case.
I'd welcome the answer if someone knows.
Without giving away too much, John is a recurring character in the story...his brother...kinda

He also refers to the Stones in the last song. "It's only knock and knowl, but I like it."

I come back here after L33 completed Rael’s journey. The happiness on his face during the key solo in the cage is - Bliss? These damn kids - whah?? All five were under 26 yrs old!

Don't ever compare ABACAB to the Lamb. That's quite comical.
They are both art rock albums. I mean you can't really compare this album to Selling England and A Trick Of The Tail.
And Then There Were Three was their 'transform' Album having there first real 'commercial' hit singles in the shape of Follow Me Follow You and Many Too Many. Yes they did have a hit with I know What I Like, but that was a bit of a novelty really.
Don't worry, we can't hear your neighbors. Phil's drumming is fantastic on this album. He's also doing nearly all backing vocals and vibraphone. In the cage is better live with Phil singing in 81 video - three sides live. Some of the stranger effects on this album were created by Brian Eno - they payed him by making Phil play drum tracks on Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets album. Phil's played on well over 100 albums thru the years. This is the only album that Peter wrote most of the lyrics for since it was his story idea. Enjoy.

Last time Peter Gabrial worked with the group, Peter tells of Rael a young delinquent out of Juvie Hall for arson. He drops acid while taking the subway home. Transforms, very challenging album with some Major gems. Yeah it is theatrical, I can see them do a movie, I lived in Queens long time, Art and Design High . elf.
Peter wanted to do a "masculine" album, where he described the standard Genesis music as "feminine". This really is a lot of Peter developing the voice of his New Wave music.
See? In the first 9 to 10 minutes, you have just experienced the four most underrated musicians of all time, And deffo the bestest voice ever. Put that all together and you probably have the best album ever recorded. But that's just my view.
This is me age 13 in 1990 on one album.
It made me have higher standards.
I listen to Mastodon due to this album. The “plot” is about both sides of yourself enjoying music.

The theatrical aspect is the difference between the original Peter Gabriel led Genesis and the Phil Collins radio play sellout pop version of Genesis.

In Broadway Melody of 1974 there’s a reference to Caryl Chessman “sniffs the air” and the “smell of peach blossom and bitter almond”. He was a serial rapist, who was put to death via cyanide. Cyanide supposedly smells like bitter almond and can be found in almonds and peach pits.
You missed the best part of the reference. The lyrics "in a scent" he sings as "innocent" on purpose. Caryl Chessman was probably not guilty of the crime he was executed for, and many believed he was innocent. Very controversial and newsworthy in 1974. Brilliant double meaning in the lyrics.
@@cjheafordGood point. I actually knew about it but forgot about it. I’ve had the album since it was released. As you mentioned, brilliant double entendre and this album and their others are full of them. Supper’s Ready on Foxtrot comes to mind. Innocence is not a surprising take from Gabriel as he was an ardent supporter of Amnesty International, specifically in one of his solo songs, Wallflower. Chessman was actually suspected of several crimes involving robbery, kidnapping, rape including forced oral sex and sodomy and was a career criminal with a long string of armed robberies long before that. So to me his proclaimed innocence was dubious. Either way he didn’t sound like a great asset to society and probably wasn’t overly missed once he was gone.

Maybe give those kids five minutes of your time. See if they got any good in them to cultivate.

you really need to grasp some if not all of the lyrics .... and the gravity there in, they didn't write this stuff for fun y'know.

And I've said this before, but you need to stop talking over guitar solos like on the second track. Hackett is playing a great solo and you're chatting away through it.
