Here we have a nice informal walkthrough showing you how to create a compost bin using reclaimed wood and pallet boards in Jack Monroe's garden! This bin features in my new book Grow Food for Free which you can order here: geni.us/grow-food-for-free (both UK and USA)
I live in the mid-west of the US and have been gardening off and on for several years (babies tend to interrupt projects). I am SO enjoying your practical, simple and creative ideas. One of the main things I love is how you use what you have-that’s a thing my hubby and I have done for years on our woodland property. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and experience! I love it!
Hi Huw! We were about to get an allotment to grow food and I was so much looking forward to it! I have been following your Channel since and learning all the wonderful tips to bring into practice.. unfortunately it didn't happen but we have now decided that our garden ("owned by children") may have some spaces here and there to be used. Can't wait for your book to arrive tomorrow!!! .. meanwhile, what veggies do you think are the best to grow together so we can start with small little projects? Thanks a million! In love with your food for free channel
....ok nevermind I got the books! Veg in a bed&grow food for free so step by step but I love them both already!.. now looking for the right place to build our compost bed! Will it smell if we only throw in veggies & fruit?
Huw, your book, Grow Food for Free, is wonderful! Lots of great information, beautiful pictures and so inspiring. I love how you’ve structured each section. It’s made the book an easy read and made it easy to reread for information. I’ve found the perfect gift for my gardening friends. Thank you!
you prolly dont care but if you're bored like me atm you can stream all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)
Huw, I really love your easy-going , laid-back style. The first video of yours I saw was the one where you made a raised bed from a free pallet, reusing the pallet nails too. Two things struck me then. First, like Nature, that pallet was completely transformed into a raised bed - no waste! All parts had a purpose. Secondly, I had been spending so much money on the materials to start up my raised garden that I was getting discouraged. Then I saw that video. I have used pallets to build my beds, erect a fence around the garden, made garden gates AND made 3 compost bins. Even built a chicken coop out of pallets. All inexpensively and all because of your inspiration. This video today is inspirational like the first one I saw. To see Jack’s enthusiasm reminded me of my first attempts. Thank you so much for what you do. I am your devoted fan.
She's just lovely. I'm also a petite female and I can't even remember my first time using a drill or power driver, but I'd wager I had her same enthusiasm. Cheers to you and here's to a long future of fun building projects for Jack!
The banter is so pleasantly British---a change from the US tone. Also, this is the kind of world I want to live in where there is gardening excitement and homes for wildlife from the leftovers etc. etc.
My favourite gardener and favourite chef! Yay....loved the video, Jack is the reason I started gardening, needing to grow herbs and chillies on a very tight budget!
Sorry, I can't agree, Amelia. Inane, not bubbly is the word that comes to my mind when she gushes how excited she is for the fourth time and we haven't got started yet. It's a warning that what folllows will have a low Signal:Noise ratio. (Signal = information; noise = other stuff). It's good to be enthusiastic, but anyone this far off the wall has been taking the wrong pills.
I love Jack, I have their books and they have helped us in very hard times. Totally amazing and genuine person ❤ What a joy to see you both together 😁 Things just get better and better; absolutely love your videos Huw 🙂
You 2 are so cute together. I enjoy your videos. A couple of things about the compost bin - If you leave one side accessible then you can turn the compost over and remove it easier . On the 2 sides, have the boards extend past the corner posts about an inch or so, however thick your front board is. Nail slats across the front sides, creating a channel that you can slide a front piece up and down. Also I cover my pile with a tarp with rocks on it so it doesn't attract pests and it helps the scraps to get hotter to turn into compost faster.
This is genuinely one of the best, most upbeat and inspiring video on TH-cam. Jack's excitement is infectious. I have a compost bin I made 18 months ago for my chicken, rabbit, Guinea pig waste and kitchen scraps but I want to go build another one now. Please have Jack on more videos making other things out of wood if she would be interested 💙
Huw you have so many talents add to it teacher/ instructor . Just ordered 2 copies of your newest book. I'm started a lending library at our community garden and I found your first book so helpful know #2 will be just as great. Stay well
Thank you for inspiring us. I made my first compost bin before having a garden. And in one year it saved me around 200$... that much I would pay for all the compost that I made in one year!
Great video! I can't wait to get you book!! Thank you for teaching working with tools. Her dad will be sad, I'm sure, but also glad for her independence!
Pallets can be chemically treated to prevent rot and then be used for the transport of chemicals. Pallets have designations that will tell you whether they have been chemically treated or not.
What an absolute GEM of a video. Two of my favourite people to feel inspired by. I’m going to do away with my plastic compost bin and build one of these beauties!
Pallets are in my top five of free resources one can obtain, like Huw here, I too have built compost heaps from them. I have also built a 14 x 8 shed from them too, guess what I have stored in it...yes more pallet wood...Steve...:)
Here I am 2 years later watching this video as I am needing a compost bin and looking for ways to make one myself. WE have pallets, we have a drill and a saw so guess what I am going to be doing today? Thank you!
Huw I have had to move to Yuma Arizona for my health. I’m missing my tenth acre garden in Idaho. Only a bricked backyard here. Would this bin work as a raised bed? If so how would I line it? Drainage? Many thanks. DEB 🌞
I used to have pallet bins, field day for rats, so I put in bought plastic ones, reinforced with mesh. Have just seen they have actually chewed through several layers of mesh, enlarged the airholes and helped themselves. I give up.
I have a plastic compost bin and recently, rats have tried digging under it so I've had to sink wire netting around it. I have also had to put wire netting over the top as a squirrel has chewed a hole in the lid. I won't let them beat me.
@@geordie1032 oh yes we regularly see excavations underneath: the bins sit on wire netting, but I think the tunnels are part of a housing project, not food procurement. I haven't managed to save a tomato crop for 3 years now, despite Colditz type defences. Good luck with yours!
If you don't have any wooden support struts then take an additional pallet board for each side and make what would effectively be 4 squares. Most pallets will have at least 6 little square blocks. Put one in each corner and screw the square into the block. I'd suggest using as long a screws as possible as it won't be as robust as the one shown but it will save getting additional wood if you don't have it already
Great video but I wouldn't recommend a compost bin directly under a tree. My sisters compost bin combusted (burst into flames) at 4am and set light to the neighbours tree! The fire brigade had to be called and the neighbour lost the tree to fire damage. Site a compost bin in a shady but sensible place.
I love how they make a pallet out of the pallet wood lol.. Easier to just take three pallets lash them together in a U shape and use some chickenwire for the front so u can open to access.
In the spirit of saving money, I've got your book on order from my local library! Although I will probably buy a copy as well at some point. The library had it in catalogue on the day of publication: capitadiscovery.co.uk/cornwall/items/848588

This video was too cute... Love how enthusiastic Jack is.. Thank you for this compost bin idea. I will be making one just like it this week.

Jack is absolutely delightful! I adore her enthusiasm! Sending gratitude from Canada for another helpful video :)
This is perfect timing. Jack’s moments of power tool empowerment honestly made my eyes well up. We can do these things, ladies!
I love Jack, I have their books and they have helped us in very hard times. Totally amazing and genuine person ❤

Her enjoyment is very communicative. Great content.
Love your unscripted videos and conversations (those with Liz too), it shows your passion for what you do.
I love Jack's personality! She reminds me so much of a beloved cousin of mine
Great pairing and such genuine enthusiasm. Thanks.
two of my fav people. two of my fav activites. love that bin.
Pallets are a brilliant way of upcycling for the garden , brilliant 🙂🧤🔥💥☀️
They sure are and can be used for so many projects! :)
Love this video. Just acquired some pallets. I'm also going to attach some wire netting on the bottom to deter rodents.

You two should collaborate and write a garden cookbook together! And maybe advice how to store garden products. 😁
Ineke Dusseljee Dam I love this idea 🥰😍

I think there’s something in my eye 😢
This is definitely the easiest way to make a sturdy compost bin. I can't wait to use my home made compost. Thank you!
What a helpful lesson--thank you!
Thank you for inspiring us. I made my first compost bin before having a garden.

One grow food, one cook food and both write books about it. Good combination. Thanks for the show. Cheers

tell you what Huw, if I was you it wouldn't be long before I was helping Jack fill that compost frame !
What a delightful couple.

Thanks Huw, going to use this for inspiration for my compost bins. Many thanks for your great videos man.
Fabulous tutorial! Very easy to follow. I'm planning my own bin, thanks to your help. :)
Yeah like Jack got her cookbooks😊 great colab.
She is a lovely person. I will be checking out her books and would enjoy seeing any future collaborations.. Laura
Yes, this is the book I saw. I remember the cover well. 📒
Thanks.🙂
Lol .. the Pine tree was trying to says "Hey? hey? whatcha you doing? ..oh awesome"
You guys are great together. Great video. Great idea. :)
Happy leap year day.
I love Jack's slight awkwardness! I've subbed to her for years.
They are diffentley sweet together...
What an awesome and delightful down to earth Lady! Great video and tips! I just subscribed and will be watching!

She is just so funny, lov that !😂

Jack is so delightful.....I loved her excitement about using the drill #me
Excellent ! I'm so glad I found your channel .
Thank you for watching :)
Always feel inspired by watching your videos, Huw!
Did you match your outfits on purpose? I dig it.
(See that gardening pun I did there?😉😆)
Hahaha, I noticed that too!
I'm glad somone else noticed the partner-look too
Ironically he does no dig gardening lmao
Hi Hew, how do you empty the compost bin after screwing all 4 sides of the bin? Regards,
Mary
Omg Jack has long hair I didn't recognise them!
Well done, brother!
Any chance of releasing that book in Australia?
Such cute people 😄
I get excited about compost too 😄
Do you have a routine for turning over the compost or adding any liquids to speed up the decomposition?
I am same as the lady that never used a screw driver. So the video really helps. Thanks
Come for the title, stay for the banter 😊
This is so cute
Jack’s a riot! 😂
A Shady spot? I always thought it was best to have compost pile in the sun. Could you explain why a shady spot is best? Thanks ☺️
Pallets are in my top five of free resources one can obtain, like Huw here, I too have built compost heaps from them. I have also built a 14 x 8 shed from them too, guess what I have stored in it...yes more pallet wood...Steve...:)
I would too know too build the other compost bin that the slats slide into. How you got the 4 post cut evenly .
Huw is thinking i need to buy new bits on my tool tomorrow, after i give this machine to this woman 😂😂😂
Thanks for the video. What dimensions do you make the compost bin?
What a sweet vid🇨🇦❄️💝
How do you keep the animals out ? I have deer, fox , rabbits, etc ?
Great vid
I have a shaded garden does the compost bin need to go in a sunny area
Here I am 2 years later watching this video as I am needing a compost bin and looking for ways to make one myself. WE have pallets, we have a drill and a saw so guess what I am going to be doing today? Thank you!
How did you do? I'm going to try to build this today .

Wont the coffee grinds slip out?
What is this used for ? And what is the smell gonna be like ?
awww aren't you 2 so cute matching!?
What is the length of pallets and posts?
Nice one!
Nice one...
Is the wedding going to be on TH-cam? Seriously guys... that's chemistry
Ha ha was gonna say the same thing. You guys! ;)
th-cam.com/video/RJcPKtVPuIE/w-d-xo.html sorry, had too 😂
@@-TKMAX- me three!
Y’all are freakin’ hilarious! Great tutorial, with lots of gun energy.
How did Jack's compost go, I think we need a follow up video!

There's another video about making a raised bed from pallets. You'd want to make it at least two boards deep though
NOT an idiot Jack - trial and error is the game. You need errors so you can learn from mistakes and NEVER put yourself down. HUGS
You two are good together....lol....
So basically, disassemble some pallets then reassemble 4 pallets and there you go!
❤️🔥
I don't recommend nails because the weight of compost can push the nails out.
Please tell me how to obtain free pallets?

"It's a gardening channel, no one's gonna care." Yes, gardening is the adult version of a child playing in the mud. 🤣
Love it! I've just ordered your book
You guys would make an adorable couple!!
Huw, are you on the make?
The trouble I have with the pallets is there so hard to get a part because here they’re built with these huge nails. Maybe I ought to get a crowbar.
Here's an excellent way "How to" video on taking apart pallets. Hope it is helpful. th-cam.com/video/vXQVo0ybv5c/w-d-xo.html

You must ensure your pallet wood comes from a pallet marked HT. Do not use wood from a pallet marked MB or one that has been painted.
It won't take a year if you turn the ingredients regularly.
She's very sweet, but too hard on herself for not knowing how to do this already, she's doing fine!
