    We really love how this giant oversized wood wall art turned out! The twisted veneer strips (edge banding) give such a nice texture to this piece and were really easy to work with. Adding spray paint to one side gave it a subtle pop of color that we looooooove. It was our first time doing wood art and it was really cool using veneer in a way other than what it was originally intended for.
    This was also our first time building a frame, and it was a big one! We used 1x2s for the outer frame, and used a bunch of 1x material we had on hand to reinforce it from the back.

    Neat! Did you consider staining / painting the backer board to have the strips contrast a bit more? I'd be interested to see what that looks like (Though I like yours as well). Also, for frame strength, I like to add a cross lap jointed cross brace into my frames for stability. I use them in my mosaic artwork (I have a video on my channel of a Thor mosaic that uses it..someday I'll get around to editing the other ones!)- those things end up weighing at least 30ish pounds, and they hold up pretty well.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      We did consider it but liked a slightly lower contrast look - though we'd love to see someone else recreate it with a darker backing! We'll have to keep your technique in mind next time we do a large frame like this. Thanks!

Hers is rectangle instead of square, and shes doing maroon for the back piece with navy blue, pale yellow, and maroon for the strips. Then I'm doing natural wood with maroon/coral/yellow for the strips. Also we stained the veneer strips and the frame, with hers dark and mine cherry red

    Super great project! It's neat to see veneers used in a way that's not laminates. Also, I noticed you kept rotating the miter saw for the different 45 degree cuts. It might be a little faster if you just flip the wood over, so that way you don't have to worry about reseting the saw every time. I assume you already had the markings on only one side of the wood and it was just easier to keep it face up, but I just thought I'd mention this in case it might be helpful going forward :)

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Haha yeah we already had the marks on the wood and didn't want to re-mark them. Our saw has set stops at 45 degrees both ways so it's really quick, but if others don't I can see how changing the angle so much would be a big pain

    • @RonaldFinger
      @RonaldFinger 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm loving your videos. You are very hands on, which is awesome because you explain how you do things step by step along the way and make it look doable. I'm super clumpsy, and tempted to do this project.

    Oh gosh this looks gorgeous! The only thing I’d recommend is making a frame so you can have glass in front. Those twisted veneer strips look gorgeous but they will hold onto dust like nobody’s business. You’d have to take it down and out and use compressed air to be able to get it mostly clean.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yeah we just spray it with air! Glass would be nice, we were just nervous about a glass sheet that big

    Fun video. You guys are very entertaining. Even though I can’t see the colors (colorblind) The whole time I was thinking, “it looks like unfinished veneer”. I kept adjusting my viewing angle and brightness to no avail. Haha!
