A very concise review that tells you everything you need to know about this sword. Zero distal taper, handles like a crowbar, lackluster sharpening, floppy sheath that may corrode your blade, but also peened and unlikely break in half when you hit something. Hopefully LK Chen can make a Revolutionary War hanger or saber one day after making the excellent 1860 saber reproduction.

I bought it because it is a good base to remodel it to a sabre that fits me well: the steel quality is better then most sabres at the time were, and knowing to work steel this is a fun project to do, distal taper is almost to where I want it, feels sooo much better already, the chunky guard will have elegance suited for a cavalry officer, I love carving steel and etching, so am having great times in my workshop for 150 bucks

Just the man I need to talk to. What would the best method to use to add distal taper to a blade? This one, my cold steel 1796, and my Condor Grosse messer all desperately need some.

I made a hardwood jig with distal taper the length of the blade that I can guide my sander over, quite like a jig to make arrowshafts, only watertight to add water for cooling during sanding down to prevent from annealing the steel, a jig can make sure it stays straight, I have done it by eye with good result but have to say I have used sanders and grinders for aboyt 40 years which can make a difference in skillevel. Most important is be patient, take your time, keep it cool.@@erichusayn

Reviewing the illustrations in "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann, I could find no hilts that matched this overly-massive reproduction. It does resemble a couple of swords identified as "American horseman sabers."

I have ab origibal 18th century hanger (short sabre) ... they are VERY light compared to most repros. A lot thicker at the base and real thin at the end.
That said I was looking at that, it'd be cool to have a functional one that isn't old. But... the lack of distal taper would kill it for me. Nice looking sword tho.

Right. Sadly, that's where a lot of the cheaper production stuff falls short. The distil taper is very important when it comes to balance and feeling. This one handles like a crowbar. Lol. Thanks for watching!

It does not look to bad but it could be better. The scimitar from Windlass Steelcrafts is pretty good; the one I have has a nice light blade with a slight distal taper so it can be more maneuverable.

One the universal swords version is heavier with a further up point of balance and is more expensive.
    Windlass listed on KOA as
    1lb 15.4oz
    6 5/8" POB
    Approx. $135
    Universal
    2lb 2.5oz
    8 1/2" POB
    Approx. $230
    Odd
Second that type of "windlass peening", as I'll call it, is screwed in place with a nut and then peened. So it's sort of peen but not exactly a true peen.
