I appreciate Jeff’s vision and all the work he teaches us . As a plumber I would love to go work at one of his jobs . As a plumbing business owner (Myself) not so much . You don’t bring a steak to a restaurant and ask the chef to cook it . Same thing for our trade . Not trying to step on anyone’s toes.
I’ll teach you everything you need to know about calling a plumber and having him do the job for you
I like this video, the only suggestion I would have is that a lot of novices like myself watch these videos to see if we could tackle the job ourselves, however about half way through the video it started to sound more like two guys with experience talking to each other, and leaving the audience out of the equation. However, I do like your videos in general so don't take what I say too personally, and keep up the good work.
Yes, some commentary might be nice, but the unseen unheard part is the labyrinth of the building/plumbing codes. That discussion would have take up a lot of time. When you're messing with main drains, unless you're moving something only a few inches, it's better to have someone knowledgeable, otherwise you could end up with drain problems in other parts of the house and worse, perhaps, discover sewer gas invading your home after you've grouted the tile on your new bathroom remodel.
He’s packing a lot of stuff into one area
I am a handy myself and by watching your demonstration is a plus for me. I am planning to convert my laundry into a bathroom with raise foundation it could help me a lot.
thank you so much the hard work and putout your video.
"that way I have room to bring out the exhaust for the dryer and all that shit..." -- Keepin' it REAL!!
II need to move a vent pipe that I believe is copper. It is in the middle of the half wall I am removing to make the master bath bigger. Could a DIY do this or should a plumber be called in? Only need to move it 6 -8 inches to the other wall.
The plumber connected the new toilet line to the main, and the new line for venting is what I think happened. The plumber used his handy connectors to simplify the job. Jeff already had venting planned, and the water supply lines were there already from the utility sink. It was interesting to see the footing and how easy is to break the cement floor ( I expected hammer-drill to be used)
That tapcon tip at the end is golden
When you break up a basement flooring to relocate piping, how does a guy replace the damaged poly under the concrete/on top of the rock? Is it necessary? Does breaking the poly possibly introduce radon gas into that area? (is there is radon in your area)....reason being after jackhammering the concrete out, the poly is basically torn to shreds. Almost impossible to tie a new piece into the existing plastic. thx
Plumber: ok.
K.
Ok. Yea sure. Ok. Yea.
Man of action! So stoic
Hey Jeff, great video. Quick question, where is the shower vent.?
Hi any videos you know of regarding adding shower drain to toilet drain on concrete slab ?? The cast iron pipe for the toilet come up so I need to cut before toilet flange ??Thank you!
I busted concrete out of my basement for a French drain Saturday and it’s like granite. I got halfway done and was so tired I gave up. Wanted to finish yesterday but was so ragged out I’ll do it another weekend. Thinking about renting a small Jack hammer to finish.
Jeff I did a similar job when I built a second bathroom in the basement of my home. My concrete floor was 4 inches thick making the job much harder. No way could I easily break the concrete as you were doing. Based on the plumbers advise I build the shower base up by 2 inches, broke a small hole in the floor for the trap, ran the shower drain to the main sewer drain underneath the toilet. The toilet, sink and shower work great but it was a lot of work.
Ernest Leo nice i am doing the same but i dont know if i really need to do the wet vent thing, where does it lead too?
UPC Codes require a 2" vent on the water closet IPO lets you use a 1'1/2" vent to roof.
and?
I had a house built about 15 years ago with a roughed in full bath. I'm finally getting around to the process of finishing my basement. I always had a design in mind. My question is can I tap into the drain for the bathroom sink or tub for a bar sink drain?
All of the videos you have in this channel are helpful to most of my own home renos. I am just wondering if i would pass sa inspection if i am gonna use 3" fittings drain will be burried in the basement floor and would use the 3" to 1 1/2" to connect the shower drain and washroom sink. Thank you.. More power to your channel 😊
I see vanity sink and toilet share a wet vent, how about shower? It's not on same branch and no vent pipe.
J Lai shower looks like it’s wet vented by the laundry sink?
I love this video. I used your technique to dig the gravel out before busting out concrete when I did my basement bath on my channel. I had to move an existing drain.
How do you know how high to mount the toilet flange before you pour the concrete? I guess it just sits flush with the future floor so when you pour the concrete it sets into the screws that are already in the flange? I have to do similar work, added that I had to drop the main drain down as it's sitting on top of the floor now so I'll have to excavate below my main drain and into the yard a bit to tie in to the existing 3inch (4?) cast iron to the septic.
At 7:19 .... I've never seen this done ... just for clarification ... you inserted Tapcons into the holes of the flange and when you pour the concrete the result is your flange will be attached to the concrete as if you screwed them into dried concrete? Seems risky though ... shouldn't a flange be installed on a finished floor ?
It will work just fine. The flange is set to the existing pad level, so when it's poured it will be exactly as if it was installed after the pour.
Dont you have to start your plumbing 5' from the drain vertical pipe ? so as to not create suction of the ptrap within 5 ' when water falls down . Where is the backwater valve to prevent sewage problems ?
Hi!! I appreciate all the hard work you put in to make those videos. Really great content.
I have couple of questions:
Do you know of any tricks to figure out all the piping routes under the concrete? Just so I don't dig the entire basement 😅.
Also, any ideas on how to do such work in an old house where you mighr encounter asbestos in the concrete?
And for the vent pipe where does it end up?
You may be able to get the plans from when your house was built from city hall.
Nice work glad to see some local talent ... I’m in the mist of renovating my old house in Kanata and find your videos very useful.
Thank you Grant, If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to ask questions in the comment section. Good luck with your reno's
This is a pretty nifty project because where the biggest confusion comes in play is you have a resilient laundry sink with all of the rough in copper piping in place. If i hired you for adding a walk in shower for the 1st storey washroom in my home it would be pretty easy task on hand because you just add a rough in light duty sewer line to the main sewer line that goes towards our man hole then you add the hot and cold water copper pipes with all the other jazz involved.
always important to see the end before the beginning.
only found your channel coming from someone that is totally clueless about construction your videos well detailed and easy to follow amazing job .quick question just moved into new hous but house is old all walls are concrete getting draughts from skirting board where wooden floors meet skirting board can i get walls insulated with foam spray or should i get floors taken up and refilld with concrete and refloored three air vents at front of house for airflow for joists many thanks from ireland.
Unfortunately Gareth that style of construction is a little foreign to me but you should know concrete is a lousy insulator. I would use spray or batt to insulate
Just bought a house and your videos make doing a task much easier, and less daunting!
Thanks Justin. The goal of this channel is to help homeowners save a ton of money while renovating their houses. Hopefully you will increase the value of your house and retire on a beach!
Hey, quick question on this. I have an old cast iron main pipe which comes up in my basement where all the drains run into. If I want to install a new bathroom in the basement can I chip around that pipe and connect into it? Do you guys recommend any plumber in Ottawa?
So question would you just pour the concrete directly on the pipes after
Michael Bujdoso no
Can an island sink be vented with Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) in Ontario? Can the aav be under the sink as high as possible? My island is about 2 feet away from the storage room, so should I do a loop vent with the aav valve in the storage room above the sink flood level?
no need just vent it o the roof. Perhaps it is time to call a plumber. Cheers!
my cellar bath cant connect with gravity, so a waste pump is necessary. What are your thoughts on raising shower versus destroying concrete tiled floor for shower P trap. I kinda like those European traps, lol. My sink and toilet are all ready to connect. You are the best.
Check into the saniflo products. They have a few products that can solve your problem without demo and just a few hundred bucks.
I broke my concrete slab to get to the main drain. The drain is about 15 inches deep under the slab. But as soon as I dig in the gravel more than 12 inches, there is water flooding. How will the plumber be able to add fittings to the main drain with all that water?
Thanks! Reduces the fear factor before starting.
I grew up in Ottawa. You speak my language!
Cheers Max, hey another Max in Ottawa. Cool
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY what if your plumbing and main run above the concrete floor? house was built in 1910~
How do you break the concrete if you do not know where the lines are? Carefully, I would imagine.
I would have liked to see how you connected shower drain,, in a corner shower with plastic base,
My basement bath is not going to be fancy, I'd like to have the shower water land directly on the concrete w no pan (like you might find at a campground bath-house) Is that possible. I have painted concrete block walls
So I'm wanting to remodel my basement into an apartment/ man cave. All of the plumbing for the house is ran directly below the subfloor & floor joists. What options do I have to tie into the old plumbing for the basement or will I have to get its own septic installed?
Hi Jeff. Question. Is it normal to see some water like 10-12 inches under the basement slab ? Thanks
Hi Jerry. I am facing the same thing. I wonder how the plumber will manage to add fittings with that much water.
Did you fix your issue?
Hi there, I own a 60+ year old home. I want to finish the basement, but I have a huge, low hanging master support for the floor level above right across the entire middle of the basement ceiling, which would cause a head banger once the sub-floor/ceilings are installed. I was wondering if I could get a custom beam installed, and remove the old set up, to allow me to make the grand room in the basement bigger, reducing the low support?
Yes you can install the beam into the floor joist package. Get an engineer to draw up the plan. You will need to open the floor for 2 footings and presto new ceiling.
I found this explanation a little more confusing than your other videos. When I was having my house built I had the builder rough in all the walls for the basement including a small bathroom that was going to house a toilet, sink and 48" x 34" +??? shower. The drains for the toilet, sink and shower were all roughed in and covered with concrete except for the opening over the toilet drain and the shower drain where the concrete was kept very thin, sort of dished out. As for air ventilation there might be for the sink but I am not sure anything was put in for the shower or toilet. I take it these will have to be added unless there is a line that connects to the sink ventilation line. I am a bit confused about the order in which things are done. Once you have the lines in and the concrete poured do you then tile the floor, except for the drain holes or do you install the shower base right on the concrete (that doesn't make sense to me because the bottom/sides of the shower base would be lower than the tile floor rather than sitting on top of it. The same thing for the the toilet and the pedestal for the sink.). Also, when does the drywall go in. I am concerned about the shower space, which is 48" from the stud on one wall to the face of the stud on the other wall. The shower unit I intend to use is from MAXX and it is exactly 48" wide with a depth of 34" (if I could get one with a depth of 48" I would do so). The product is completely molded in fibreglas with a gel coat finish. The base only goes up part of the way, high enough to accommodate a built-in seat. Then a second stage sits on top of that, running flush with the walls on three sides all the way to the top of the shower enclosure, I'm guessing 6'-6" in height, leaving about a foot to the bottom of the floor joists above the upper sides of the shower enclosure. The face of the shower has a two-part glass door with on part fixed and the other acting as the door which swings open. I'm not sure how the unit would be finished above the shower stall to properly cover the studs and the ceiling. I'm also assuming that the plumbing, ie. the pipes, are not installed until the shower unit has been installed.. Yes? No? Maybe? William (Gatineau).
Do you need to break concrete for a wall mounted toilet in a basement?
Hi Sir Jeff. I am learning a lot from you. Sir, I wanna know what's your insight and do you recommend using MACERETING UNIT for basement 3 pcs bathroom pluming system. Im hoping you can make a video about this Sir. Best Regards.
That is a great way to get results and save money. I love saniflo!
Thank you so much Sir Jeff. Your advice is the only thing im waiting to use it..
I just wanna let you know that you have been insoiring me pursue my dream of becoming a desinger and home builder/renovator. Even if I am a nurse, ive dream that someday I could be your apprentice and be like you. Thank you so much for all the videos you have shared in public. You have been teaching us a lot of things.
How do I know if the builder did the rough in for a bathroom correctly?
Were can I find them plumbing drain
Hey! How about a video talking about the pros/cons about oil based, latex, house paints?? I just managed to buy an oil based primer and ended up with a huge mess when I tried to clean up. Newbie mistake. 😉
someday!
Sadly this don't help me... i need to know if there are any footings along the way, because i don't have a 3 inch pipe on that side of the house. So i need to go to the other side and don't know if there is a footing in the path. tile through out means no simple fix for the existing floor.. i need help anyone have a thought?
I havent seen a video for preventing basement flooding??? Water leaking in from walls
What do you do with the hole after you're done? Just fill with concrete or?
Dr Giggles fill it with Cheerios
What about when you have a drain on the basement like 8ft away from where are you planning to put a new baht .is that ok to do that or what do you recommend.?nice video thanks in advance.
I recommend using saniflo. It is a small waste water pump with no pit that can redirect across the whole basement.
nice videos, question instaliing new bath and laundry will have floor drain how do I keep floor p trap full so not to dry out allowing gasses to enter
Hi Al, simply use the bathroom once in a while or add water to a drain on occasion. Cheers|!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY can I add a purge line to shower or
Do you need a permit for this?
No
Hey Jeff & Team - New member here with a waste plumbing design question. Wondering if I can send you all a few pictures of my design and have you let me know if there are any obvious fails. Let me know and thanks!
yup. send it to the members onl;y email . it is found in the community posts on the home page!
@0:34 I tried using a sledgehammer and it didn’t work my 1926 concrete needed to be broken with a jackhammer
Hi im not a plumber but im running drain lines underground .. I had it all layed out and a plumber friend of mine said if im using the sink as a wet vent the pipe can not be laying flat needs to be pithced up... Buti noticed yours was flat... Is this true or not? Before i start all over again
I am working with what was left by the original plumber. he did it incorrectly. you should have a 1/4 " slope over 4 feet
Hi Jeff, Thanks for all your videos. I am surprised to not find any video from you on how to do a stand up shower in a basement. Overall, how to do a full bathroom in a basement. As in basement you are working on concrete. So do you do a sub floor before you tile and so on. Looking forward to your reply and hopefully a new detailed video. Cheers
Would also like to see a video on the full steps from basement rough-ins to completed bathroom!
Wow! Plumbings hard! 😂
Thanks for this video. What would a professional charge for a job like this? I’m thinking of installing a 2 piece powder room into my basement.
more than you want tot spend.
Thanks for your response. Is 10k reasonable for just the washroom? I have to redo the floors and paint as well and I’m getting quotes for around $30k for a 900 sq ft basement including new washroom.
I want to install toilet in my basement buy my swer pipe sit about 5 inches above the ground. How can I do my plumbing hook up for toilet?? Thank you
Look into Saniflo products. They can pump up watse to your desired height.
Home RenoVision DIY is their a Web site??
This one was very timely for me. Just had plumber in last week to quote us on roughing in bathtub in the basement instead of shower. Basement bath is already roughed in for shower, toilet 4" and vent lines for vanity. Of course, I was thinking shower is fine. But I have 3 daughters so, I was overruled on this one, you know women/girls like tubs. :-) Glad you showed the process and described what you were doing. Thanks!
Sometimes just seeing a process gives you the understanding to get good value. I never have a problem paying for good work , I just hate getting scammed.
I could not agree more. That's why I watch your videos. Understanding the process and being able to talk through the work required is advantageous to not getting scammed or getting more done than you actually need. Earlier in the process I had one "guy" tell me I needed a new pit and the cost was substantial, the new pit may have been true based on where my wife "wanted" the bathroom. But understanding where the builders designed/roughed in the bath makes things far simpler. So, I just modified my layout plan. No sense making things more complicated than they need to be.
Great approach Brian Thornton. Good luck with the project!
Hey jeff u or a man of many talent, truly respect ur lesson
No horizontal wet venting
I just love all your videos. So much info, I'm always saying I'm not going to watch the whole video, but I do. you make everything seem so easy
Thanks for watching and for commenting. We really appreciate it. This is how TH-cam decides if they will promote the channel.
how much did it cost for just the rough in drains ?
Thats what i was looking for
You provide the best information in all your video's. Very thankful for the money saving and knowledge.
How to remove concrete around the toilet install in basement and not damage the pipe(s)?
carefully. The pipes are stronger than you think.
what if its a tension slab?
great video! thanks for the complete step by step. would you still recommend doing it this way or go with the newer macerating toilets? alleviates the hassle to dig up the concrete floor. or would you still recommend doing it the way you described in the video?
Saniflo is definitely worth investigating , however in small spaces it is sometime s better to open the floor and tuck it all in there.
Home RenoVision DIY - have a 600 sq ft basement that’s unfinished right now. Hence my thoughts of using a saniflo vs putting everything underground.
Really appreciate you taking the time to respond! Keep the videos coming!!
Hi Jeff I have a question for you about the job I did in my basement. I want to know if what I did will work
Based on all the above information I would say YES!
Just subscribed. Love the simplicity of your explanations. Thank you
Your vids are very informative btw!! Lots of good tips and pro time saving tricks that are very helpful. Many things are” why the HELL didn’t I think of that” , moments.. LOL
I used to be in charge of service and problem solving for a large firm and found that most problems were communication related. Now I think through every process into the next one and make sure I am saving time and money.
Very knowledgeable! You sound more like his Supervisor 😃.
Very important to know what you want as a contractor, this way the trades deliver everything just as you need it and you don't run into little problems later on.
That’s what I was thinking when I was watching lol. He almost should’ve just said okay I’ll leave my van here, use what ya need and I’ll come back and pick it up later! 😜
Just curious, how much for the plumber US ? You make it look easy, which I guess is your job !
You can expect a plumber to charge for 3 hours. That is usually a minimum.
Don't hire by hour. These Reno's cab priced per fixture or per job. Don't pay for 3 hrs in 1hr task.
Why are all the best contractors Canadian?
Tad Saxington I know eh
Very informative video! Appreciate the information brother! I like the idea or pouring concrete around the Tapcons lol
We're building a bathroom shower in the basement this is great thank you I didn't know the plumbers plumbers have cameras to see where the pipes are sweet
According to the Ontario Building Code 7.5.2.1, your Wet Venting plumbing is all wrong. The toilet needs to be the last fixture vented downstream in the group, otherwise it will siphon the shower trap and all traps downstream when flushed.
No worries there Errol, the shower also has a vent attached separately. Cheers!
How do you set the height for the toilet flange?
Kevin Clifford toilet flange normally on finish floor sits right above it. So if it's just bare concrete the flange typically sits right above the floor
So what if there is no existing drain lines under the concrete floor?
Then you will need a pump and a macerator to expel the waste water up to your septic line.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY so can you come do a diy at my house 😁
Hi I like the way you work and your honesty. My question is It's that possible to make jobs in Toronto too or you have some one.
Thanks
Why not use an "up" system so you dont have to crack the concrete. What is the advantage or disadvantage?
Makes no sense adding that complication in order to avoid breaking the concrete. Breaking the concrete is the right way to do it. You only use an up system when the sewer line is above the level of the toilet.
Hello Jeff i have to say your video's makes me wanna try the pluming life, they are very informative so thank you.
Great video... Keep up the good work Jeff...
Thanks Ray, good to hear from you again! Cheers!
Excellent job super always no. one Mr. Thorman
Thank you my friend, good to hear from you again.
why does the plumbing venting go thru the roof? why cant it go thru the wall?
outoftime Most local codes allow it to be put through the wall if it can’t be vented through the roof, however certain terms and conditions apply depending on where you’re located. It varies between code. Not sure where Homerenovision is located but I presume it’s where it can’t be vented through the wall or the rules about wall venting are too much. Cheers,
Because we tried to make one on our besment
The tile diy was fantastic. Decided to subscribe. Thank you
Thanks Codey, We will try not to disappoint!

Can you do my basement bathroom in Brampton?
Sorry I am an Ottawa Boy!
I like to use pvc abs melts to easily.
Love your channel! !!!
Love watching ur videos...So much useful info
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great stuff sir. Love it
I recently saw a show where the plumber used a concrete saw to cut out the pattern above and just pull the concrete out in only a few pieces.
That can cost you as much as 25 dollars a foot for the cutting and that's only one side of the cut . A one foot by one foot hole could cost you a hundred dollars . . Great option if it's in the budget.
Good stuff, are you going to show all the details of how you built this bathroom?
Yes! we have the follow up vids for closing framing insulating and prepping for flooring.
And of course the project video will have the final reveal.
Thanks a bunch. What I would do to work with you and learning from you. I started working in renovation in Montreal 2 years ago, and just started as an independent contractor 6 months ago. If ever you need extra hands let me know
One of these days I will be looking for help when we start our new channel. Thanks
3:06 WHAT ARE THOSE?!?!
great video
my shoes?
How the the water flow up from the basement
In our area the water sewer system is that deep in the whole city! It does not have to flow up it actually flows down from there.
I am working on new bathroom in my basement. Do i really need shower pan? Can i just tile around the drain and install corner round sliding shower door?
I would suggest the shower pan. Cheers!
But you do good videos
How much does something like this cost?
digging a hole is free!
stumbled on y our channel last week...really great videos! I've watched about 6--great tips--great production quality. Thanks for taking the time to do these...
Looks awesome but I wish I could see a video of this on a one story slab foundation
Same deal on a slab on grade building. Although you probably have pvc instead of abs plumbing in those regions.
Wish you could do a video. On slab. Tgat structure looks like it has a Thicker framing of the concrete around foundation floor interior a thinner slab. I could be wrong. I’ve never attempted opening up the slab. But it is on the list todo.
Wouldn’t a slab have rebar I have to cut through? And redo?
