Very very good playing Max. Your hard work shows. You move in between styles and techniques flawlessly and I can see many influences in your playing. Guthrie, Greg Howe etc. Keep up the wonderful playing. You are gifted and an inspiration and a real pleasure to watch and listen to.

Max really is on another level...he makes you look at your own guitar, and say WTF!
This is beyond shredding. Most shredding is just playing fast for the sake of it, and not always audibly discernible. This kid is a genius in the true sense of the word. He thoroughly understands the music he's playing and could show some of our more "seasoned" guitarists a thing or two!
Max is legitimately one of the finest guitarists I've ever heard. He would've been on the cover of every mag back in the day. How he wasn't the winner of the Kiesel contests is beyond me.

Shawn Lane was the first guy to take guitar to that other worldly place of razor sharp technique + beautiful melodic sense. Guthrie Govan took that torch from him. Max Ostro is the next in that line. Unbelievable player.

@@Chris-is1rd Nah, Holdsworth was a pure fusion player with lots of wide “outside” based melodies. Shawn’s more diatonic approach, especially early on, was something else. Allan was fantastic but he never created something like “Rules of the game”.
How on earth can a 17 year old play the guitar like he has been playing/studying for 30 years!...also, he doesn't need to even scrutinise the neck while he is playing! This man was born to play, evolve, actually become as one with the guitar. I really don't think we will see his like again in our lifetimes.
He's a left hand only player. Uses months on every video he puts out

I think you underestimate the ability of millions of kids growing up with an online library of the most brilliant musicians/teachers/tips/etc at their instant disposal. True, you could pour over that stuff for a lifetime and never attain "Max level" but I think it'll be less rare as time goes on
We had a guy like that. At 15 no one could touch him.
I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years and Max is the first in 15 years that I can honestly say ‘This bloke is kicking the sh** outta music for technique AND phrasing’
Fantastic playing, gives me hope and makes me wanna give up at the same time.

His playing has the feel of a true modern master…his phrasing isn’t just technical it’s layered in a way that speaks to the trained and untrained ear simultaneously…there is a message for both…it’s musical in a way that feels beyond the instrument he’s playing….

Watch his 2019 Kiesel contest entry - the winner by far. Then watch his 2020 entry in which he plays his Ibanez and zooms in on the headstock at the end in some sort of minor defiance :p Incredible talent - I'm 50 and have been into guitar since I was 14 - seen everyone live from Paul Gilbert, Vai, Satriani,, Nuno and Petrucci to Guthrie, Larry Carlton, Josh Smith and everyone in between - Max is next level insane and quirky with it - fantastic sense of humour and a joy to watch, well done to JTC for picking him up so early too!
personally he's like a russian guthrie govan, with the comedy he puts in his guitar, the emotion, the personality and the raw skill and talent.
Same with me. I started with Mac Alpine, then Yngwie, Satriani, Vai, Van Halen, Joe Stump. This kid is INSANE. Truly next level.
Max is so unique because of his effortless fluidity, speed and amazing phrasing. The first few times I saw him I kept replaying the videos because I wasn't sure it was real.
That diminished chord on the intro and the overdrive powerchords really set up the feel for the song. So subtle and easily disregarded.
I agree. I’ve often watched Max’s playing many times in the past and I would just despair. His tone is flawless. His sense of the fretboard is utterly supernatural. The tiny legatos alone are proof that no one can touch him. If the world’s looking for the next guitar superhero-look no further than Ostro.

Dude, I've been watching him for months and my jaw hits the floor everytime I hear him play. You can hear him play at 13 and still be gob smacked. I'm 72 and have been playing since I was 12.
This kid is honestly one of the best guitarists I have ever heard. Just mind blowing, and so exciting to listen to.
Max is re-inventing the guitar playing like Jimmy Page, Eddie van Halen, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and some few others done.
How he can be so loose and so technically perfect at the same time is mind blowing. I've been following his videos for awhile, he also has a fantastic musical sense of humor.
You could say this kid is a virtuoso but it would be such a disservice. He's without a doubt one of the best guitarists to have ever walked the Earth. He's musical, unbelievably fast, innovative...he's the best on the planet right now..

I feel exactly like you do, and as a guitarist i try to show my wife and friends what im seeing and hearing and they just don’t get it, freekin his playing just puts me in that happy zone as does, Andy Timmons, Nick Johnson, Joe Satriani etc…..
I even showwed him at a friend guitarist (a very bad guitarist for 30 years) and he told me it was just technnical stuff. WTF !!! Not really my friend anymore.

I been watching and trying to play along with Max for a few years now. Really good kid too, nice dude and humble. What I take away most from what I learn from him is his flowing use of modes and bends, he does all kinds of ghost bends and will switch up in the middle of a big bend and just go to that note, kind of a jazzy thing at times. This guy is what makes me more believe in aliens, this dude is from another planet. He's definitely a virtuoso but he's more than that, I can't quantify it with this language. Also, I tell my students all the time, be economical with your hand and fingers when you play, don't move them any more away from the neck than you physically have to. If you watch Max, he barely lifts his fingers off the fretboard in between licks or chord changes. Perfect technique.
A more organic player you'll never find. Rhythmically sensational. Born to do this. Simply the best......but not prolific.
I like he is taking his time and keeping a low profile, "hidden" in Russia; no streaming, no interviews, no lessons, bs. Imagine if he does just one album (a masterpiece) and then quits lol!

I was quite disapointed not to see him in the Biggest Shred Collab that was recently posted by Jared Dinnes. He would have been awesome in this video. I think he will be among the greatest guitar players worldwide in a very near future. He's already there in my mind but he's simply not known enough to have that recognition.

I've come across Max some time ago. He blew me mind, when he was even younger. This guy was playing a Fender Squire which sounded unbelievable! His technical playing ability is just out of this planet! I am a guitarist myself ( No where near Max of course) but I can surely play a guitar. Still, not even if I had a million years to live and practice could I even get close to doing what he does with a guitar 🎸!!

I've been watching Max for about 6 months, very talented. You Tube is fantastic for this sort of stuff. I really like his version of Rhumba by DiDula that he did when he was about 14. A few years ago I lost 2 fingers on my left hand, and can no longer play, now I don't feel so bad it.

More Max please! There are so little reactions and review of his stuff on youtube (especially in English) and it is quite sad since he is absolutely golden.
I think it could generate views to be one of the first to cover him before he blows up and also bring people to your channel.

Max is one of my favorites. Amazing talent. When you said, "what even happened there" about his run at 2:33 , you failed to mention the cherry that Max put on top of it at the end with the harmonic via his right hand! That puts a smile on my face for sure! He has an amazing ability to hear sophisticated phrasing in his head... and just have it magically flow right out his finger tips. And he doesn't even need to look at the fret board to do so. Truly spectacular! I would certainly buy any and all albums Max ever puts out... c'mon Max!!!

Hi mate, I'm an older player and through the years I've been amazed how the guitar has evolved.
Many players have made me smile because of technique and stunning ability of speed and accuracy.
I have to say Max has something extra, like you pointed out , the subtle bends in a run, other amazing runs that you wouldn't notice but makes the overall performance outstanding.
I am hoping he tours soon in the UK, I would go out of my way to see him play.
Maybe he will be invited on a G3 tour? let's hope, your a damn good player yourself, Happy New Year

Max fucking does 3 tone bends, manifest picks mid riff, slides with lightning speed, walks with monster walks. It’s more than a normal mind can comprehend. I’ve been playing lead guitar longer than Max has been alive. And he’s my idol! Lol

I grew up on Shrapnel Records, Vai, Satch, Beck and I can say with clear conscience that Max is my new guitar God! I get so excited and just laugh watching him play. He is a true delight!

'Shredders' are great but I can only consume a few minutes before it starts going over my head. Max has the ability to keep you connected with what he's playing by being so diverse. What ever you like he plays it but never too much of any one style.
He's part of the new breed of young players who have absolutely no fear. Or far less than previous gens.

This kid is 15 and already at a level impossible to achieve by 99.9% of guitarists. He is the equivalent of a 15 years old playing in the NHL and beating every records done by Gretzky, Jagr, Lemieux, etc... I'm so glad I'm living at the time as him, I already missed Mozart, Bach, Hendrix

I'm a retired lead guitarist & I am still smiling because of this young man. Technical to the nines yet his expressive lead narrative is multi faceted, stylish & diversified. To be so young and playing guitar for such a short span compels me to say that he is one of the very few TRUE 'naturals,' though I do wonder what his daily practice regimen consists of. Thx for posting this remarkable talent.
He has the musical ability to write guitar solos that can capture the imagination of the world and be played forever, however, unless he gets over shredding like crazy, he will only ever capture interest from other guitarists and not reach his full potential. Hope you will realise that one day Max . Wishing you the best.

There is nothing I like about shred. However this ain't shredding. This is seriously melodic, quick, and amazing. This is gold. People usually just can shred or just can do melodic. This is good and I'm glad he is around to show people it all isn't just about EDC.

Ive just discovered this ! Really inspired . I miss playing , life got in the way of it , Ill have to fix the roof and some other things first but as soon as life lets me , ill be wiping off the dust fixing a peg or two añd play them again. Maybe ill film the process . I wonder sometimes how much great stuff leo kottke has played that just happened only that once with just himself there to hear it . I hope some of what i have played comes back . Guitar is an awesome thing .
