I played a prototype of this game a couple years ago at GenCon. Back then the material pieces were plastic and you built your building with these different colored pieces. Worked pretty well. Maybe the plastic pieces were too expensive to include in the finished game.
Gil had originally launched the KS campaign for this with the plastic bits, but that pushed the game's price to around the $90 range. After getting a lot of feedback saying he was pricing the game out of the market for his target audience, he cancelled it, and relaunched the campaign with the cardboard buildings at a lower price point. He is looking at a second campaign that will include the plastic pieces for those who want them, and in the first campaign he had an update that linked the STL files for them if you wanted to 3d print them yourself www.kickstarter.com/projects/gilhova/high-rise-0/posts/2699416
if you're interested, the designer has made stl files available to replace the cardboard tokens and buildings with stackable building floors here (he is also planning a second campaign that includes professionally manufactured versions of the plastic floors) www.kickstarter.com/projects/gilhova/high-rise-0/posts/2699416
I originally backed this cuz I loved The Networks, plus I got to play the prototype when it still had building blocks for components. It was great as a prototype, and I'm glad I backed for the real deal. Loving Gil's games so far :)
That was a very odd opening. I get the feeling you dove down a path but forgot what the point you were making -- good to see I am not the only one who this happens to :).
The first kickstarter was canceled due to the high price of the game because of the plastic pieces. Then the second kickstarter was barely funded. That is to say that we don't have to check only the very high funded games or only from big companies. There are also hidden gems elsewhere. Maybe if Gil after the good reviews will make a deluxe plastic version again who knows.
I just asked him about it, because I didn't want to cut into a potential revenue stream by linking the STL files to 3d print the plastic pieces (he said that was OK because he doesn't see many people taking on the job of printing them themselves, as it is over 300 pieces) He's working on a second campaign that will include the stackable plastic floors.

Those components are so silly, but I love it!
Really good review Tom, this one wasn't even on my radar until you reviewed it! I will have to take a look.

I passed on this Kickstarter the first time around. But I’m definitely going to back it this time.
Do you think this is a revised Monopoly concept that works?
I loved that mechanism while playing glenmore II, so I realy have to check this game :D
Ah yes, plastic, the ultimate material in building skyscrapers.

Gil's looking at a second KS campaign where you can get the plastic pieces.
