My guess is that the aluminium gradually work hardened from years of transitions between no and full hydraulic pressure, leading to fractures. Same problem that happens with commercial aircraft like Aloha Airlines Flight 243. There is also the issue of the various salts, acids and minerals that have been dragged through the fins over the years. Might not be quite as severe as road salt on a Dodge Ram 2500, but it would get there in the end just from the the materials it excavated over the years.
I think Engine and hydraulic was first and second priority. Functionality before beauty. Ask any farmer. The operator cabin will definitely get new glass.
I must admit, ive epoxied an ac condenser. i ordered one from Usa to Sweden and the carrier damaged it. then i waited for the replacement and it looked fine but as i pressure tested the system with nitrogen it had an leak from a factory defect.... it was peak summer in Sweden and i really didnt want to wait for a third condenser so i epoxied it and the system is still cooling perfect 12 years later 🤣 im not proud of the repair but sometimes bad repairs become permanent repairs when they work😆

Yes, if the flow rate was correct, 2 coolers could have been stacked. The too much pressure comment is from someone who doesn't understand the topic at hand. If two thinner radiators were rated at the same pressure and half the volume, he could have plumbed them in parallel to get the same volume. The other commenter also implies that a different configuration would be messing around and not a real fix. I do agree with Jon, that it was just easier, faster, and maybe not any more expensive in the long run, to have the original cooler rebuilt. It is good to keep the factory style, which is more simple, but it doesn't mean a redesign would have been bad or not worked. I have fixed Car/Truck radiators (Last Century) using heat, Blow torch they were all soldiered together. I lived in same City where "Blackstone Radiators" were made, had a couple friends who worked there and clued me in on the heat the soldier trick.
Might have just been camera lense, but that tool cylinder rod looks bent in the last part of your video. I ran one of those 170's when it was brand new in the late 80's, even then hydraulic issues were problematic, after a couple years we traded machine in for Deere and never looked back. There were some features on the Case that were very nice though, very comfortable to sit in all day, loved the heavy lift circuit for setting manholes as the controls were very sensitive for craning operations in standard mode. Thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane!
I noticed you eat a lot of yougert as well , I love , whole Milk yogurt it goes well with my granola and this time of year the berries from divine 73 ‘s 9231 so Ct
I thought for sure you were going to head to the machine shop section and machine yourself up the appropriate crows foot wrench... or some sort of wrench you could use on those bolts... now and in the future. But... I guess you didn't need to do that. Jesse Muller is one for making the tools he needs (often they don't make or sell) but so is Jake Rosenfeld who made a timber wrench designed to take the twist out of timbers in order to get them in their braces or whatever.
Love your videos🤩 Im looking forward to see the job that large marge is planned to do. Escavator companie hired in compare with repair cost and your own time both repair and using the machine. No matter what the figure saying after the job is done, you have large marge to keep and a ton of cool youtube videos. Greetings from Oslo Norway😊
I don't know much, but couldn't you open those tanks yourself? If that were the case couldn't you block the leaky channels? Surely the cooling capacity isn't THAT critical?
Hi John, so sorry to hear about Big Mama. It’s never easy loosing a friend. I’m very curious about why the cooler leaked as it’s full of oil so it’s not corrosion and it’s well protected so it’s not damaged. Weird. I’m loving the series even if it’s giving you headaches and I’m sure you’re keeping an eye on the expenses. Funny, but I’d really like to see the smashed glass replaced. I guess it would just make the whole machine look less trashed. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺
For future reference, a $10 kiddie pool (the blue round molded plastic ones) are great for large format “leak detection vessels” also you can just make a box frame of 2x6,2x8’and drape plastic in it as a field expedient “pond”. Don’t even need a bottom. Love the Content!
I take back everything I said, thank you, thank you, thank you! You really came through with all the seal pics I'm feeling better about life now! I can finally move on. But seriously I love the videos thank you very much.
Great Video as usual. What a mess, glad you went with a new cooler vs the epoxy method, I'm afraid the epoxy would of started to break down over time with that much pressure, most likely right in the middle of a job.
I love your Vids Jon... If you were to hit your wrench with a "dead-blow" hammer, it would act like an impact gun... Just an idea. (from an old hyd man)
A trick to quickly make a custom water container for such a use: Make a frame on the floor - outside! It can be made using bricks or pieces of wood or what's laying around. The object must just fit inside. Then simply cover it up with a sheet of plastic or a tarp and fill it with water. Voila. You empty by removing the frame.
You have spent a lot of money fixing up that old excavator and you have been very meticulous in your repairs so why not go on and do those hydraulic fittings properly? I mean use Loctite 545 on all your hydraulic fittings. It's made specifically for oil fittings. They won't leak and they are easy to remove if the need arises.
Jon, if you would give your wrench a sharp rap with a hammer those tight fittings, like at the 3:00 minute mark, would break loose without all that undue twisting motion. You are inducing a lot of strain into the fitting, or bolt or whatever you are trying to loosen. I am 79 and I have been doing heavy equipment maintenance for over 60 years. I took me a lot of broken bolts and twisted off fittings to learn that simple method. I have even broken loose fasteners that an impact wouldn't loosen. Try it.
WooHoo! A Farmcraft101 video! Thanks for sharing this with us, Jon. Starting a running commentary. • I wonder why there's a cloth shroud on that. Is it just about providing a tunnel to move hot air from the machine? • Ewwwww, icky. • Yeah, that wire grid IS disgusting. • Pullin' hard with the nut rounder wrench. Best of luck with that • WooHoo! Got the first one! • Heh. Go, go air hammer! • Quite a difference in cleanliness between the clean side and the schmoo side of that hydraulic cooler. • It leaks. Dang! • Grumble, grumble. "Good used" hydraulic radiator for $2,000 from Case. Grumble, grumble. • Ewwww, the schmoo under that fan. • All hail the arbor press! • FWIW, that fan assembly cleaned up nicely. • Heh. "hammer". • Re-coring the hydraulic oil cooler. Probably a good idea to have a new core, as opposed to a "good used" unit. Might as well do it right. • The "bull" "dozer" interlude was fun. • Awww, sorry to hear about the loss of Big Mama. I didn't realize that cow's were "old" at 13. Good to see that Little Mama is doing okay. • Paisley like new oil cooler. • Snazzy new oil cooler, all mounted up. • It's good to see that you have the new hydraulic oil cooler system all installed. . . and it's not leaking. • How does it function, Jon? Is it running alright? Is is cooling properly? 👍 🤞 😵 🙂 😃 😉 😋 🤪 😂 😢 😵 🤕 🤮 🥳
As small as those holes were I'm surprised you didn't try some sort of epoxy or solder before forking over the cash for a recore. Especially when they blew the measurements. You'd think for that kind of money they could be bothered to measure twice.
Ashamed it wasn't just one tube. I used to repair them by welding the leak or if it's just one or two tube's. We would cut them off and weld the opening in the upper and lower tank. The oil coolers were rougher than the radiators cause tig welding and oil a big pain. Would flush them with a degreaser.
Sorry to hear about Big Momma! Large Marge is coming along nicely. I think all of your subscribers are anxiously awaiting her return to the working world. I actually learn a thing or two watching your videos. Thank You for that. I don't want to complain but, I have watched all your videos and I admit that the appearance of "Seal Pictures" that accompany the pronouncement of the word seal is something I have come to expect (LOL). However, I noticed the the word seal was spoken 14 times but the picture of a seal was shown only 4 times. Please try and do better in future videos. KOKO!
I had the same problem with our forklift. I removed it, found the leak. Smeared epoxy into it. Still leaked at some other point. Smeared epoxy into it. Fixed. Two years and two thousand hours later and counting.

I was kind of hoping for a dual cooler, maybe reconfiguring the top (exit) to increase the area to compensate for the thickness. Also thought that maybe an AC condenser (commercial duty) could be repurposed for the return hydraulic pressure. That is what I think being a mechanical engineer who loves heat exchangers. BUT...I like the rebuilt unit just as well.
Another great video Jon, you are the most patient person I know. RIP big Mamma. I love the way Dozer wanders up to each cow and says hello, Hey you know about hydraulic wrenches right? One end has a 90degree much like a crows foot, the other end is a 45 open end, I think Matco makes them, but I imagine everyone does. They are so good for getting to those fittings.
Have to say, this was a little strange after some of the monster videos recently. Half the length and everything was fairly straightforward. No huge curveballs. I know you've earned it after the turbo and manifolds, but the work you did in that video set a pretty high bar.
I love it when a plan comes together. Great video Jon. LARGE MARGE, really coming along. I think it's going to be a solid piece of equipment when completed, and it provides great content. See you next week.
With that oil leaking the way it was, I was considering sending you a keffiyeh (Muslim headwear for men). I guess I don't need to now. I do have concerns about the installation of the new radiator. As you were putting it back and tightening up the connections, I clearly head the "click" on the one corner, but nothing on the opposite. I do hope it holds! :) My sincere condolences on the loss of Big Mama. It doesn't matter the type or size of the animals we become friends with. Once they've acquired a place in our hearts and lives, it's tough when they go.
I'm very sorry for the loss of your four-footed family member "Big Momma". I'm sure her life was a great one, as cows go, and she received lots of love throughout her time with you. Congrats on the great repair of "Large Marge"; may her oil stay clean, cool, and inside her!

Backhoe controls FTW! I hate SAE controls. They don’t feel right.
You should invest in a hammer open end wrench for those tight spaces. You also get then in box end/ring
Hi john from uk ,as a fitter I looked after 2 of these machines, you will never stop it leaking as the hydraulic system runs too hot , the best way to deal with that lemon is a viking funeral.
Imagine not watching the video early and supporting your favourite creator. Guys Jon clearly busts his butt support him so we can see more cool things!
Neverrrr replace that nicely scratched up green crafting mat in your shop, makes me feel comfortable for some reason (also sorry for your loss, animals need the same treatment as children, so is our rescued dog)
every episode
you demonstrate why
you are a Legend
go to a pawn shop or elsewhere buy a used single wrench modify for the job well worth the effort in avoding the hassle of non correct tools
I would suggest the Modine heat exchanger, I think they have stock of oil coolers. Years ago they were made in South Dakota
Be a machanic because you need frustration and agravation in you life
That's the truth.
Find a good radiator repair guy
Damn, rattle can ole' marge and you have practically a new machine! Great work!
Like a buxom mistress, Large Marge just loves it when you spend money on her!
You’re one tough guy Jon. Great video👍👍👍
I absolutely love John's videos!!! Friday morning coffee, an egg, toast AND Farmcraft!
camera guy had one job.... LOL
was it worth buying this excavator in the end? it seems like you spent a lot of money on the repairs already - would be good if you discussed this
Question from “Not a Farmer”. What do you do with a dead cow? Do you eat it? Should you eat it? Do you bury it? Thanks, love the videos!!
you dont eat a diseased cow.
Dig hole/trench. Apply Cow. Top up with Pallet Wood. Apply Fire. When you can’t take it any longer- go for a burger. (Repeat last part until it’s gone). Fill hole back in.
The excavator isn’t for looks. 😬
Yes, I'd like to know as well. Do you eat a cow that dies of natural causes on your farm? What if it's one that you named?
Same here, Not a farmer, Same Question!
What part does the yogurt container play?
Keep dust and water out while I had the seal removed.
Great job great video awesome repair thanks jon
BACK ONCE AGAIN! Perfect timing, have a great early start to weekend everybody!!
🍿
RIP Big Momma. Thanks Jon & family. Take care & stay safe.
Use four wood blocks and a garbage bag filled with water and lay it in it
Definitely has Several Pin Hole Leaks in that oil cooler Which would explain the Amout of Oil Dripping this video is getting good Jon 9:30 @FarmCraft101
I have fixed Car/Truck radiators (Last Century) using heat, Blow torch they were all soldiered together. I lived in same City where "Blackstone Radiators" were made, had a couple friends who worked there and clued me in on the heat the soldier trick.
Is there a new big momma or does it take time for the herd to establish a new matriarch?
Good question. I wonder if the cows fight for it like the bulls, or they use dirty tricks and backstabbing talk like female humans? LOL
I think his wife does.
A lot of improvements have been made in fan performance -refer to PC cooling fans.
If Frankensteing a solution, could you 3d print a better fan?
Another awesome video from Jon heck yeah I been waiting for the Repair ON this Cooler and Fan Dripping Issue 1:12 @FarmCraft101
Where did we hear that before .
This is going to be tough .
" This should be easy "
Could you not just weld a small patch over each side of those fins? Sure it would lower the efficiency, but it would cover the leak no?
Everything on this Bad Boy is super sized, JOHN. You’re a helluva MECHANIC!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely love your documenting these repairs.👍👍
I thought for sure you were going to head to the machine shop section and machine yourself up the appropriate crows foot wrench... or some sort of wrench you could use on those bolts... now and in the future. But... I guess you didn't need to do that. Jesse Muller is one for making the tools he needs (often they don't make or sell) but so is Jake Rosenfeld who made a timber wrench designed to take the twist out of timbers in order to get them in their braces or whatever.
Yep, if the chain wrench hadn't worked I was going to make a crows foot. Tough part there is the 1/2" square.
@@FarmCraft101 don't cut a square hole, weld a bold on it and you have a hex head to work with/socket to breaker bar.
Why not braze the holes?
Full of Oil residue. Not going to bond well.
@@guytech7310 perhaps... I got interrupted watching. Looks like the leak was not easily accessible so that's the real problem with repairing it.
Wow, the trouble you go thru to remedy leaks, you must REALLY hate oil leaks! Great series, enjoying watching your progress
Last time I was this early, Large Marge still had all her glass
Best of luck with that
• WooHoo!
Crazy how you’re improving America by sharing your knowledge to young men thanks for your time and effort John.
Hydraulic or radiator? I just don't see how epoxy could hold back hundreds of PSI for very long.
@@FarmCraft101 Radiator. The professionals usually tig weld or laser weld. Some Old timeys solder. If its on the inside yeah thats annoying to dig out but it usually isnt. Im usually not a fan of bodge repairs but I made unexpextedly good experiences with repairing radiators, including oil coolers. If it ever leaks again in any capacity, its kicked to the curb and replaced for sure. Time is money :)
@@Narwaro Just squees the micro channels shut both sides of the leak
3:29 Thanks for the weekly motivation, Jon. Every Saturday, I start my day with coffee and your video. No matter my weekend tasks, they never are as tough as what you’re doing, so I tell myself, "Quit being a wimp and get after it!"🤣
Great vidjao as always Jon its wonderful that you are bringing this beast back to life its never simple but it's rewarding when it works. Farm life is never boring
You did mention replacing the oil cooler with a modern one. Modern ones have plastic (glass reinforced nylon) header tanks. Can you imaging screwing in your hydraulic hose connectors with your massive spanner to any degree of tightness? 😊
Great job as allways .... i just can.t wait for the next vid .... RESPECT good old farmer !!!!
Sorry about Big mamma ... remember Big Mama Thornthon with Hound dog ..... it might fit together. BTW, i love blues music more than anything .... B.B. King, Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Koko Taylor, Slim Harpo, Muddy Waters, Jesse Thomas, Buddy Guy, Elmore james , Joe Turner, Memphis Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker, Bessie Smith, Charley Patton (with Ravenue Man Blues recorded in jail in 1934), Bukka White, Blind Willie Johnson, Lonnie Johnson .... and many-many others ....
The little doggie remembered me one of mine dogs.... she.s name was ”Bonsai” because she was a pekines rase .... little-little doggie, and very cute as well. She had three sons once in a year and the one it remains at me (the others were donated) recieved the name ”Pitzy” ... (meaning the ”littleone” in my language). Infortunely she passed away 20 yers ago. Pitzy lived 17 years after.
All those memories .... pffffffff . We are getting old ... God bleess !!!
"I really didn't want this to be a problem"
And yet, you went looking for it anyway.
Man, that oil cooler looks a peach now! I'm currently working on getting a 1950s farmall super m with farmhand attachment running and am feeling probably 0.1% of the pain you are going through. I'm currently getting the engine running but am scared to see what all leaks with the hydraulics. Anyways, thanks for making the video!
Is that white dog Chinese crested dog. (Powderpuff). My parents have on 14y old. The personality is perfect. Doesn't park. Sheds almost no furr. Very easy for elderly couple.
15:56 You didn't say click! You must go back and say click, or it will ruin your new oil cooler!
A sub-30min Large Marge video? Never thought that would happen! You did the right thing having the old cooler rebuilt.
😛😛😛😛😛😛❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Crows Foot made for fittings Short Extensions a Breaker bar And Cheater Bar . Hope this Helps . Change All Hydraulic lines . Cooler Non Aluminum. Drain All Lines ! Fresh stuff. The only way to be sure . Contaminants in Lines Called Dirt ! Fan motor too . If you can Steel Braided Hoses.
I love the way Dozer wanders up to each cow and says hello,
Hey you know about hydraulic wrenches right?
LOVE THAT NICK NAME!
My sincere condolences on the loss of Big Mama.
