- Cleaning up the old girl after sitting for many years. What do you know ? it actually runs really good.! I adjusted the brakes, cleaned the tank, and cleaned the carbs, polished the chrome, adjusted the clutch, charged the battery, aired up the tires and got new license plate tags. I've been riding it around, it runs better and better than ever. Now if only it was summer !
Update: This bike is 12 volt and the Yamaha RD60 is the smallest bike, who knew?
That is my exact 1st bike! Same color everything. I rode that bike all over it was the greatest thing! I've had many since but I'll never forget that bike and the feeling I had riding it
Starting tip. (It's not a 4 stroke)
You don't give it any throttle at all when starting.
You can give it a couple of pumps before you kick it.
You can hit the throttle immediately after it starts if required, but hitting it whilst kicking chokes it
exactly correct!!
Fantastic! In 1977 my friend in the UK had an RD200 with the really distinctive sound and electric start:)
i had a Rd 200 a very underrated bike tuned and some fancy exhausts it was a pocket rocket and the RD125 and for a 125 they were great
That sound brings back so many memories. In '72 or so I went through two of them, it was my car and my ride to Junior College in Miami. Two got stolen in the parking lot, insurance replaced both, finally my last one didn't get stolen because I bought a huge chain and an alarm for it. Their big downfall was the muffler insert would get so caked in carbon, eventually it was impossible to remove. I sold it and didn't tell the buyer about that, boy was he mad.
just go for a long run about 100 miles will clean it out i got tz pipes on mine Kevlar reeds changed the carbs use the best oil you can get chain saw oil and allways a little in the petrol , and went out and thrashed it stop plug check perfect took it to my local bike shop and with a very man done all sorts to the bike new tyres suspension brakes when i got it back and the sounds crackel crackel and been told take it very easy a pocket rocket
Nice old bike. Back in the day, 1974, I had a Honda 750 4. I raced the 350 version of this and it left me in the dust between stop signs, haha. They were very quick off the line.
I had a 75 RD 60 as a kid was my first bike in 1978 and in 1983 had a 74 RD200 .
My very first bike was a new 1980 Yamaha, a XS650, I had a lot of good times on that bike, this one reminds me of it a lot, I always loved the controls on the Yamahas I owned, their feel and the smoothness of their action became evident when I moved on to other makes. Even though this is a 250cc I'll bet it still scoots and it may be a fuel sipper compared to the larger 2 strokes but it's still pretty thirsty.Nice bike a blast from the past.
If I remember correctly? For easy starting don't turn the throttle. Yamaha's for some reason don't need the the slide cracked open to get em going. Like a Honda needs the carb slide or buttterfly lifted just a bit to start. Hope this helps you.
Some guy's would put their hand on the middle of the bar to keep from turning the throttle.
bought yamaha rx100 in 1995 stock brand new. rode every single day till 2012 it gave up. its like i lost someone. i had it repaired many times. now it cost more to repair then buying new one. parts are rare. best motorcyle build ever. i loved the engine sound its traction its body size.
Yamaha were proud of their Reed valves...
Nice project but hardly a 'Fuel Sipper' as you put it, unless ridden very gently which isn't what these bikes are made for and even this baby brother 250 will still be a thirsty bike when ridden hard.
Picking up a 1973 RD250 in a day or so, complete, running and with matching numbers with great chrome, etc.
Can't wait.
Awesome! You'll love it
I have the rd60 been fixing it up lots fun
Nice sounding little bike!
Runs really well, pretty cool old bike is right... by the way that is a 12 volt battery, not a 6 volt! I'd bet you could find a good used gel battery on ebay in those dimensions for cheap to replace it. I have had good success using old gel bats off off of ebay for my 1975 R75/6 BMW over the years.
The reed equipped RD's were known for pretty good MPG (for a two stroke) The 350 getting between 45-50mpg unless you were a ham fist. LOL
haha.. so many project.. you got to start putting up storage buildings like someone else we know ;)
boy, do I hear ya brother !. I need a slice of paradise like what you have to store my storage buildings.
I had the same bike in brown. Also had a 1975 RD350 . It broke down on me on the highway and I was so pissed I sold it. Thanks
It would run fine with the air box installed...your kick fest is due to a lean condition caused by running without the air box. See how long it takes to rev up? Be careful if you ride it like that, you could hole a piston.
I was looking at it and thought the same thing. Thanks for the confirmation, I suspected as much and will hook it back up .
@@2stroketurbo they won;t run worth a damn without the stock air box/filter
they made a rd50, rd60, rd80, rd125 rd200 rd250 rd350 rd400 rd500
cool bike
Nice bike, though I think you should keep it, so you can learn more about the 2 stroke smokers 😆
Anybody know how rare the ones with front drum brakes are? Thanks. (nice example you have there)
HI there i have one identical same color same every thing mine needs some TLC been setting since my dad was killed in nov 1990 he rode it all the time i rode it for a dirt bike because i did not have one very reliable machine
Sorry to hear about your dad, they are neat bikes that are now considered classics. It may be a good idea to restore yours as a tribute to your dad.
I was thing the same thing because i have a clear tital to it it will be next winter because i got two project for this summer my lt500r that my mom get new back in 90 and house work thanks
2stroketurbo
Do NOT ever open the throttle when starting these on full-choke. Doing that over-rides the choke plungers and it will never start...as you experienced.
hi battery is round the wrong way and its a 12v system
I love your bike but the RD series goes down 200, 125,100, 60. I owne a 1974 rd60 that I have had since new.
Hmmm..... looking at the right engine casing and the fact that it has a front twin leading shoe drum brake when RDs had a front disc brake plus a few other features makes this bike actually a 1973 Yamaha YDS7, the RD250A's earlier sibling..... That and the engine sound like a YDS7 (no reed valves) compared to the distinctive RD250 reed valve induced engine growl.
+Andy Reid YDS7 never came in this color combo, only RD250. Also, not all RDs came with disc brakes. Most came with drum brakes up front besides the 350. RD125, 60, 200, and 250 all came with drum brakes during the first iterations of the each bike.
RD Yamaha amount please
noting classy about a rd350. its a total hooligan bike
jeff ferguson it's a 250
and another thing mine got a lot more compression than that mine is std bore
And a Rd 125
Your real close but yamaha also made in canada a rd 2oo pretty rare little diferant longer tank little more modern
Try using the choke2 strokes have to choke for 30 seconds. And your bikes is running on one cylinder cant you hear the bogging change you plugs check air filter
That ain’t no RD250. That is a YDS7 boy.
Know your bikes.
How so ?
RD 60 was the smallest.
My native place Tamil Nadu Salem
Don't normally see a 2 stroke with twin exhauata
Two stroke cycle engines always have one pipe per cylinder.
@@techmaven5900 the Cossack 175 had two pipes one cilender
low compression
It's not smallest RD200 is
actually, I found out later a RD50 is the smallest, I had no idea at the time.
+2stroketurbo Yeah they make a rd 60 I have a 74 rd 60.
Don't all motorcycles have batteries?
i have rd 250 for sell offering me
いまいちだなぁ
