I think Nigeria should divide for peace and tranquillity of the people. We are very diverse people and there is very huge differences between the North and South for any amicable union. There is no way restructuring can work without one planning to dominate the other. The best is to separate for the best interests of the people. As someone that have had a privilege of working closely with HRM when he was ED Risks Management in First Bank, I do not expect anything less from him. HRM.It is not bad that you have to learn English to study BA in Arabic.This is because the books you are going to study with are written in English, not Arabic. If the Yoruba Muslim can combine their Arabic studies with English and the Middle Easterners can combine their Arabic learning with English, the North has no excuse of achieving the same for their almajiri children.

This is for Jerry Njiaku, thank you for your insightful and wise comment. I am Hausa/Fulani diaspora. Yes, the dethroned King is very smart and intelligent. But the big problem of my people in Northern Nigeria confuse the faith with the culture. They promote Arabic to a point where many of their constituencies do not understand what they are trying to teach them. This is one of the reasons why they are proving incapable to lead the North and provide basic modern education and acceptable living conditions to the masses of their Talakawa. They are constantly demonstrating their elite and knowledge by elevating Arabic over indigenous languages. One thing is to use Arabic knowledge when dealing with religious matters. Another thing to promote local and indigenous languages to educate your people. This is exactly what all the major developed and developing countries such as China, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, Cuba, and many others have done in order to educate their people and develop their countries. You do not transfer real knowledge and especially scientific knowledge for modern world in a language that a majority of your people do not understand. The former King is truly a smart man but he is guilty of the same elite approach that keeps our people down and uneducated and destitute in the North. We should not elevate any foreign language over indigenous languages. Each language has its place. You don't educate the Saudis, Qataris, and other Arabs or Europeans for that matter in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, or Wolof or Lingala or any other African language. So, yes Jerry, your insightful comment resonates with many of us. Not just in Nigeria, but in all African countries, we should promote indigenous languages in teaching our people. The challenges are to have the Elites and so called intellectuals to localize their academic disciplines and come up with curricula in indigenous languages. This is how you educate people. The Emir/King has alluded to some of the points I have raised here. But instead of just talking and pointing fingers at the issues and problems, he should propose solutions. That is what being smart and intelligent and leader is about. He has been good at criticizing but very short in proposing the way out and concrete steps to solving the problems. I agree totally with his HRH but on one issue.. I don't think the fact that North is dominantly Muslims is cause of the poverty in North. What about yoruba Muslims? Why are they no Almagiris on the street yoruba state? Why are they no Almagiris on the street Saudi, Dubai you name it? I ve been opportune to work with some truck drivers in North with whom I interacted with, a young man of 32 has 3 wives, 15 children, planning to marry a 4th wife with totally no plans as to education of these children. To me this should be like one of the major issues the northern elite should address. I also think that, the northern leaders have totally failed not only the north but the entire country bcos I believe if North had are as educated as everyone other sections of the country we would have moved further than where we are now. well that problem with polygamy that a lot men invest very little care for children other than money. Most christians view monogamy as idea model which encourages fathers to invest time and care of their children.
This is because Yoruba muslims have a different mindset on family. Islam allows men to have as much as four wives but they rarely take more than two (I'm only talking about the majority here) so they can take care of what they bring to the world. A Hausa has thr mentality to keep marrying and reproducing with no sense of responsibility and if you ask him why he will not accept that his mentality is wrong, in many cases he knows no better, he will tell you that's what Allah says he should do. For getting the fact that polygamy was given as an option but not a rule that one must follow. This is where culture plays a big role in understanding the religion, because sadly Both Hausa and Yoruba muslims combine culture with religion and call the combination Islam. The bad traditions we have now get translated as Islam and it's the excuse we keep giving. This is why the mentality has affected us more than any region of the country.

Great speech. However, I differ on his opinion regarding the English language. The reason why English is more relevant than Arabic is because of its universality. Knowledge is useless without human interaction because knowledge derives its value from its expression to mostly humans. The bigger the community where knowledge can be used or expressed, the better value that the holder of that knowledge can seek for himself. Also the more people can speak a language, the longer the body of knowledge one holds can live, by being passed from one person to another and from generation to generation. Many bodies of knowledge have been lost as the language in which they were codified or expressed have been lost, so even though we see the physical expression of that body of knowledge, no one can use it because no one can understand it. SLS spoke about Mandarin, because of its popularity, coming from its rising relevance today. This is because of the size & the economic value of the community that speaks it, same with Arabic. However, the owners of that language want to learn English & even in more of their cities, they try to incorporate English into their community. It is not because of colonialism, it is because of the functionality of the English language in a highly connected world. My belief is that English language is a key part of the skill set for the 21st century man and that even those who will move Northern Nigerian world forward are the ones who are able to connect to the new world, gain insight and bring new ideas to develop that part of the world. So the strategy should be developing eloquent Arabic and Hausa people who are eloquent in English. In Europe, it is not strange to find a middle class teenager who speaks more than 5 languages fluently, especially in the richer central European countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Germany etc. That should be the goal.
I agree that English is more universal, but I think his point is that even in Arabic the language can be use to create higher education like being a doctor, nursing engineer and all manner of courses that will help their community in north, after all the north seem to prefer Arabic to English and all he's saying is if that's the case then it should be for higher education instead of just for the Koran,

Honestly, the Emir has done well to have delivered this great speech. My observations: 1. This is not limited to the Northern part of Nigeria but to the entire African Muslim Communities. 2. Nigeria should recognise education in Arabic and other commercial Nigerian languages. The National Assembly should enact a bill to recognise other forms of education that are not English based. As the Emir said, the Colonials used English education to turn everyone into illiterate. Now we have swathes of the Country that have some form of education, but are still considered illiterates.

It was the doggedness and unity of the Yoruba in display that made the two major party presented two Yorubas as presidential candidates and the Yoruba eventually compensated with a Nigeria president from the zone in person of OBJ. Were that to have happened to the Igbos, I am sure they wouldn't have been able to produce president in compensation. Another most recent one is in the establishment of Amotekun security outfit. Igbos have not been able to achieve such, yet you claim Igbos are more united than the Yoruba's. I bet you, were it to be the Yoruba's that wanted out of Nigeria since the 60s that the Igbos wanted to go, it would have been achieved by now. One of the reasons why it hasn't been achieved is because the Igbo elders have not bought into it.If they had, it would be better to co-opt other tribes,the Yorubas and the middle belt to agitate together. Luckily though, the current Buhari regime has opened the eyes of the other tribes in the South and have forced the South West and the Middle belt to join the agitation. So, the country is fast moving to either restructuring to regional government or separation.

HRM.It is not bad that you have to learn English to study BA in Arabic.This is because the books you are going to study with are written in English, not Arabic. This is for Jerry Njiaku, thank you for your insightful and wise comment. I am Hausa/Fulani diaspora. Yes, the dethroned King is very smart and intelligent. But the big problem of my people in Northern Nigeria confuse the faith with the culture. They promote Arabic to a point where many of their constituencies do not understand what they are trying to teach them. This is one of the reasons why they are proving incapable to lead the North and provide basic modern education and acceptable living conditions to the masses of their Talakawa. They are constantly demonstrating their elite and knowledge by elevating Arabic over indigenous languages. One thing is to use Arabic knowledge when dealing with religious matters. Another thing to promote local and indigenous languages to educate your people. This is exactly what all the major developed and developing countries such as China, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, Cuba, and many others have done in order to educate their people and develop their countries. You do not transfer real knowledge and especially scientific knowledge for modern world in a language that a majority of your people do not understand. The former King is truly a smart man but he is guilty of the same elite approach that keeps our people down and uneducated and destitute in the North. We should not elevate any foreign language over indigenous languages. Each language has its place. You don't educate the Saudis, Qataris, and other Arabs or Europeans for that matter in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, or Wolof or Lingala or any other African language. So, yes Jerry, your insightful comment resonates with many of us. Not just in Nigeria, but in all African countries, we should promote indigenous languages in teaching our people. The challenges are to have the Elites and so called intellectuals to localize their academic disciplines and come up with curricula in indigenous languages. This is how you educate people. The Emir/King has alluded to some of the points I have raised here. But instead of just talking and pointing fingers at the issues and problems, he should propose solutions. That is what being smart and intelligent and leader is about. He has been good at criticizing but very short in proposing the way out and concrete steps to solving the problems. And now that he is being deposed, maybe he can establish some sound institutions to tackle those problems and provide real solutions to the North and Nigeria in general. I wish him all the best in his civilian life now. One last point, I hope they can stop mixing religion with what is directly man-made creation and irresponsibility. Allah has nothing to do with the backwardness of the Northern Nigeria today and Hausa/Fulani Society.

I agree totally with his HRH but on one issue.. I don't think the fact that North is dominantly Muslims is cause of the poverty in North. What about yoruba Muslims? Why are they no Almagiris on the street yoruba state? Why are they no Almagiris on the street Saudi, Dubai you name it? I ve been opportune to work with some truck drivers in North with whom I interacted with, a young man of 32 has 3 wives, 15 children, planning to marry a 4th wife with totally no plans as to education of these children. To me this should be like one of the major issues the northern elite should address.
I also think that, the northern leaders have totally failed not only the north but the entire country bcos I believe if North had are as educated as everyone other sections of the country we would have moved further than where we are now.
The leaders have refused to educate their people to have less children so as to use it for their political purposes (game of numbers) without any plan of education for these numbers.

well that problem with polygamy that a lot men invest very little care for children other than money. Most christians view monogamy as idea model which encourages fathers to invest time and care of their children.
This is because Yoruba muslims have a different mindset on family. Islam allows men to have as much as four wives but they rarely take more than two (I'm only talking about the majority here) so they can take care of what they bring to the world. A Hausa has thr mentality to keep marrying and reproducing with no sense of responsibility and if you ask him why he will not accept that his mentality is wrong, in many cases he knows no better, he will tell you that's what Allah says he should do. For getting the fact that polygamy was given as an option but not a rule that one must follow. This is where culture plays a big role in understanding the religion, because sadly Both Hausa and Yoruba muslims combine culture with religion and call the combination Islam. The bad traditions we have now get translated as Islam and it's the excuse we keep giving. This is why the mentality has affected us more than any region of the country.

The reason why English is more relevant than Arabic is because of its universality. Knowledge is useless without human interaction because knowledge derives its value from its expression to mostly humans. The bigger the community where knowledge can be used or expressed, the better value that the holder of that knowledge can seek for himself. Also the more people can speak a language, the longer the body of knowledge one holds can live, by being passed from one person to another and from generation to generation. Many bodies of knowledge have been lost as the language in which they were codified or expressed have been lost, so even though we see the physical expression of that body of knowledge, no one can use it because no one can understand it.
SLS spoke about Mandarin, because of its popularity, coming from its rising relevance today. This is because of the size & the economic value of the community that speaks it, same with Arabic. However, the owners of that language want to learn English & even in more of their cities, they try to incorporate English into their community. It is not because of colonialism, it is because of the functionality of the English language in a highly connected world.
My belief is that English language is a key part of the skill set for the 21st century man and that even those who will move Northern Nigerian world forward are the ones who are able to connect to the new world, gain insight and bring new ideas to develop that part of the world. So the strategy should be developing eloquent Arabic and Hausa people who are eloquent in English.
In Europe, it is not strange to find a middle class teenager who speaks more than 5 languages fluently, especially in the richer central European countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Germany etc. That should be the goal.

I agree that English is more universal, but I think his point is that even in Arabic the language can be use to create higher education like being a doctor, nursing engineer and all manner of courses that will help their community in north, after all the north seem to prefer Arabic to English and all he's saying is if that's the case then it should be for higher education instead of just for the Koran,
The goal should be to elevate our own language while learning foreign languages, not elevate foreign language over our own. The languages that died died as a result of this.

Nigeria should recognise education in Arabic and other commercial Nigerian languages. The National Assembly should enact a bill to recognise other forms of education that are not English based. As the Emir said, the Colonials used English education to turn everyone into illiterate. Now we have swathes of the Country that have some form of education, but are still considered illiterates.
Why do you consider English to be colonial language but not Arabic? Were the Arabs not also colonialists? The Arabs also enslaved Black Africans and also evangelized Nigerians!

It was the doggedness and unity of the Yoruba in display that made the two major party presented two Yorubas as presidential candidates and the Yoruba eventually compensated with a Nigeria president from the zone in person of OBJ. Were that to have happened to the Igbos, I am sure they wouldn't have been able to produce president in compensation. Another most recent one is in the establishment of Amotekun security outfit. Igbos have not been able to achieve such, yet you claim Igbos are more united than the Yoruba's. I bet you, were it to be the Yoruba's that wanted out of Nigeria since the 60s that the Igbos wanted to go, it would have been achieved by now. One of the reasons why it hasn't been achieved is because the Igbo elders have not bought into it.If they had, it would be better to co-opt other tribes,the Yorubas and the middle belt to agitate together. Luckily though, the current Buhari regime has opened the eyes of the other tribes in the South and have forced the South West and the Middle belt to join the agitation. So, the country is fast moving to either restructuring to regional government or separation.
