      I'm not sure if this is the case for everyone, but I find that having to constantly maintain awareness of how I phrase things to communicate effectively to be tiring and very unenjoyable, because for the most part it seems to be a useless endeavour when talking to most people. In day to day life people like it simple.

    I don't agree with everything Sam Harris says, but he always impresses me with his calm demeanor and ability to articulate his thoughts. All those years of meditation have payed off.
    Having a calm and clear mind isn't easy, especially when one's fragile ego or reputation is under attack. The default reaction for most people is to become overly emotional. Often people resort to name-calling without actually providing a sufficient argument to demonstrate why they think someone is wrong. The person who resorts to ad hominem attacks reveals more about his own psychology than he does about the person he's attacking. Calling someone a nasty name carries zero communication value.
    A prime example of this "all name-calling no substance" type of argument can probably be found in the comments below.

    • @shaolin89
      @shaolin89 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Haha after reading "Waking up" I suddenly understood why he's able to have this kind of patience and calm as he has. Meditation is underrated.

      I don't wanna shit on Sam, but I find it hard to listen to him, because he explicitly breaks up his sentences and doesn't finish the thought. He's remarkably intelligent but I don't get the feeling that he's a great speaker. I just don't see it. He's calm, but I don't feel he's well articulated, at least in this interview for the most part.

      After hearing his arguments against free will, I decided to buy his book and give it a read to see if I could agree with his points. Many times I found myself reading the same page 4 or 5 times, trying to fully extract all of the information he packed into such a small book. I've found that difficult concepts become more clear when you talk about them with other people that want to talk about them, or even write about them. If you're always surrounded by monkies that only want to talk about bananas, it's going to be difficult formulating complex thoughts and making them seem coherent. Sam Harris is a ninja in the sense that he is incredibly well-educated on so many different topics. Once you know something in its entirety, it becomes much easier to talk about.

    • @armanrahimzamani1962
      @armanrahimzamani1962 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. In the case of genome sequencing, the point is that you won't need to sequence the entire genome of a new person, only certain locations that are likely to be different from other people, called SNPs. Hence the reduced cost. The rest of the genome is known via the very 3B research carried out at first.

      The reduction in the cost of sequencing was a function of computing power, not of money spent on sequencing. The money spent on computing power is what spurred sequencing speed. A lot of money could have been saved if they had simply waited 10 years to begin the project.

      it wasn't really "conquered" land though. There was no "unified mongol holding power" They basically just swept through randomly and demanded tribute then left, leaving the victims cultures, customs and religions in tact (so long as they surrendered right away). If they really wanted to conquer and civilize all the land they "held" like the roman empire did, it would have been very different and much much more difficult.

      Kenneth Scott they built it LONG before the mongols. Earliest construction started in 700 bc my man. China has always had to deal with nomads. My point it the mongols never settled and built an empire. It was more like a "mafia" style control where they would just show up and everyone would give them what they wanted because they knew if you didn't then you and everyone you know, your entire family/clan/tribe/culture would be completely eradicated.

    Just like 20 minutes in to this pod cast but as a life long meat eater I have to admit the idea of getting off daily chicken, pork etc. does sound pretty good. I have no interested in giving up a great steak from my local restaurant once a month but (and I imagine a lot of people would agree) I always feel kind of tired and gross after eating a bunch of meat. Oddly I do not get this with vegetarian dishes. Given we don't need meat for protein and fat anymore I think I may give it a shot. At very least cut down on meat.

    • @atanosX
      @atanosX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Comments like this makes me happy! Giving up/reducing meat consumption seems to me like a small sacrifice compared to the amount of reduced suffering, although hard to quantify.

      cookiemetal I think if we live long enough and ever become part of a milky way galactic UN we will find out that at some evolutionary point all intelligent life forms switch of meat. It doesn't seem to far off (25-50 years)

    • @atanosX
      @atanosX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure about the galactic UN part (or rather UP or USS?), but the idea of us humans having largely switched off meat, or at least switched to lab grown meat, within the next 50 years, does not seem entirely implausible to me :-)

      Hey Andrew, I read your post and I felt the same way you did (only a few years back) I was a lifelong big time meat eater. I switched to a "whole-food plant-based" diet 1.5 years ago and I feel 2 times better now.
      FYI, Harvard and Yale teamed up a while back and to solve the mystery of the ideal human diet "vegetables,fruits, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains" for more info check out Dr Katz "disease proof" and Dr Gregor "how not to die"
      I now cook all my own food on the weekend. I save a thousand dollars per month on food and the food I eat fixes my body instead of destroying it. I'm also no longer a massive burden to the earth or our society. It's a real win win! I wish I had learned how to eat like this earlier in life.
      Good luck
