    This came out free for xbox the other day, and I gotta say this is a really helpful guide, My first playthrough I made it to the Bell Gargoyle bosses and even with Solaire summoned, we kept getting our asses kicked over and over, now I should have a pretty fair chance, thank's dude :)

      First time I killed him, I had to use two downward lunge attacks because he kicked my ass toe to toe. The second time, I had mastered rolling and timing well enough that I fought him on even ground and without getting hit.

    You missed out on some important loot that you can get early game. Having played my fair share, I'll shout out my 2 cents.
    This may contain spoilers for some areas, so please be mindful.
    -- Firelink Shrine --
    > Binoculars (along the cliff behind Zweihander. Useful for aiming with a crossbow)
    -- New Londo Ruins --
    Near the Crestfallen Warrior (the sullen guy greeting you at Firelink) there's a staircase leading downwards, with a woman in a cage. Pass her and descend the newly discovered elevator to find New Londo Ruins.
    > Estoc
    > Firekeeper Soul - The earliest accessible Firekeeper Soul in-game. Follow the bridge near the Estoc, and once you near the ghosts, hang a right. Amidst the stone fortifications, there's a doorway leading to a thin path covered by the water. Across it is the Firekeeper Soul - but prepare for some more ghostly company. Expect this to be a suicide run. Once you have it, take it to the woman in the cage and she'll reinforce your Estus Flask.
    -- Valley of the Drake --
    If you have access to New Londo and started with the Master Key, you'll be able to head to this area as soon as you hit Firelink. Once in New Londo, immediately head right and open the caged door to the Valley.
    > Dragon Crest Shield
    > Astora's Straight Sword
    > Brigadier Set + Spider Shield
    > Red Tear Stone Ring - Must get this if possible. Boosts ATK power greatly when HP is at low risk. I'll come back to this later.
    Coming at the Valley from this way also gives you early access to the Darkroot Basin bonfire and Grass Crest Shield.
    For daring players, or those who can handle a few suicidal runs, there are one or two more useful loot pieces lurking around...
    -- Blighttown --
    Once you hit the Valley of the Drakes, you'll have access to the rear entrance of Blighttown. Heading through here and down a few sets of ladders, you'll be shot at by some poison darts coming from your left. Dashing in here can net you a second Firekeeper Soul early game - however, this will almost certainly be a suicide run. Don't be too attached to your souls at this point.
    Also, if you do obtain both Firekeeper Souls from here and New Londo, be wary that obtaining the third Soul at the Parish will trigger a certain someone to kill our precious Firelink Firekeeper, rendering the bonfire obsolete until later in the game. If you wish to keep this bonfire lit, you may see fit to kill a certain someone before he gets away with the dirty deed.
    -- The Catacombs --
    Don't bother fighting the Skeletons at this point - you'll do bugger all damage, and they'll be revived constantly by a necromancer pyromaniac. Proceed far enough through the area, though, and you'll be rewarded with the Great Scythe. More skilled players can also use this area as the earliest access to a Blacksmith, and possibly ascend a weapon to Fire (Great Scythe or Zweihander are good choices here).
    Really, REALLY determined players can potentially get themselves an end-game weapon if they're willing to test their luck. The Black Knight guarding the Grass Crest Shield may or may not drop a Black Knight Halberd - with 22 STR and 18 DEX, one can two-hand this for the highest hitting weapon possible early game (correct me if I am mistaken here). Getting this also means you can tackle Blighttown and Ceaseless early on, racking up enough souls to one hand it. With access to the Great Hollow - and a choice selection of Crystal Lizards for Twinkling Titanite - you can bump it up all the way to +5 relatively early. I managed it in roughly 42 minutes, but I've seen it done in 25.
    Lastly, a few tips for the Havel fight. If tackled incorrectly, he can be a pain in the ass, but with the right set up you can breeze right through him. A common mistake new players make is tackling him with armour on. Do not bother. If he hits you, you're dead anyway - whereas with no armour you can potentially fast-roll out of an attack and go for a back stab. If you were smart and got the RTSR from Valley of the Drakes, you can activate it by falling off the stairs a few times before fighting Havel. This will basically quadruple the damage you do against him. Also, if you have a small shield from your started class or the undead merchant, you can beat him down easily enough simply by parrying his attacks - the small shields are much easier to parry with, making this fight somewhat safer. Watch him carefully and you'll see he telegraphs his attacks for about 3 years before they launch, giving you plenty of time to parry and riposte him. With RTSR ring equipped, it won't be long before he's coughed up his ring for you.
    A bit lengthy, but there's my tips for early game.

      @wileycoyote4737 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      3 years later just for someone to correct you.
      Missed the Gravelord Sword you can get if you teleport in tomb with those 3 eyes of death, pretty good for early game, actually the best other than BKH that's very rare and Fire Scythe that's extremely hard for newcomers.
      So with that GLS you can take on Pinwheel down there early on , killing him in around 6-7 swings, giving you about 15k souls and 1 of the 3 masks, all of them being very useful.
      You can even do it with a phantom if you survive to be in human form long enough.
      Also before Pinwheel you can get Black Knight Greataxe, cuz Black Knight is not far away from him, but also rare like BKH.
      ALSO you can go to Second part of Darkrot basin and get stone set armor, Hornet Ring, fight Sif and get lots of souls, get Large magic ember, alot of high value souls, just clear whole second part of the basin out.
      On top of that you could kill ML Butterfly with help of a ranged magic phantom, but why botter with such rich arsenal of end game weapons?
      There's also before Taurus demon a lizard that can get you both twinkling titanite and a chunk, plus one above Black Knight with the halbert in basin.
      You can basicly finish a character for the rest of the game without fighting Naked spider girl and Gargoyles or even that many bosses in general.

      Wiley Coyote and if anyone would go that far to the great hollow or to the red tear stone ring why not go get the power within too? Then get yourself a fire reinforced club and activate the red stone ring then use power within and you can one shot even Taurus demon .

    One more thing, Kindling is permanent. So once you kindle a Bonfire it will remain kindled until the end of the game. It can be extremely useful especially in more difficult areas. So if you are having a rough time with an area, farm some humanity and kindle the nearest bonfire. Those extra flasks will help out immensely.

  • @Godsux07

    For anyone desperately trying to kill Havel! Everyone has a weakness and his is simple. Lure him up the stairs to the second floor, circle around him to go down the stairs luring him back down. At the top of the staircase, wait for him to attack you while standing close to edge. Dodge him by rolling off of the staircase as soon as his attack animation starts and his attack will make him fall off which damages him and leaves him super vulnerable long enough to get a good hit on him. Once you have attacked, lure him up the stairs to repeat the process until he's dead. Keep your distance at all times until he falls off the edge for you to attack him. With this method you shouldn't even have to dodge one single time. Repeat this being carefully and you should be able to beat him with ease. I struggled for an hour before I figured this out, but laughed at the thought of me trying to fight him head on after I beat him with this method :)

  • @Copier777
    @Copier777 11 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    No, I won't get so many damage with any of those hack and slash classes at the beginning of the game.
    But if you would go on and two-hand your axe, you'd see it deals more damage than pyromancy and doesn't have all this long charge time.

    If your having trouble with Havel there is a pretty cowardly way to kill him without taking any damage. It takes a long time but will always kill him, eventually.
    Just open the door right behind him that leads to Dark Root Basin. Because he wont follow you out of it, if you poke your head in until he chases you. just step back out the door and hit him a couple times with a spear before he goes back in. Do this over and over until he dies.

      StewyOwl No, with weapons that break super easily, LIKE THE UCHIGATANA its super useful and the OTHER traders are atleast an hour further into the game

    • @ChaosAngel4274
      @ChaosAngel4274 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While repair powders can be useful, it is good to note that they are more useful for weapons with special abilities like the dragon weapons or other special two handed heavy attack weapons in PvP than anything else. The repair box for 2,000 souls tends to be a better investment for PvE in the long run. Also, the Uchigatana's durability is low, but it is unlikely that you will need to repair it between bonfires as long as you regularly maintain your weapons and armor. To be fair, if you have no desire to join the forest hunter covenant even temporarily and would just rather never go into Blight Town again even after you've gotten the Lord Vessel, than I suppose you can kill the Undead Merchant after you've gotten all you've needed from him. There's no need to fight over it, it's just different play styles people :'(

    I have watched a lot of videos in dark souls and this is clearly the best I have seen. it is too the point, explains how and why succinctly and logically, it is edited down for essential content ,and delivered in an interesting but down to earth manner. Kudos. You should think of a career in teaching. I say this as a very good teacher.

    Why does almost every guide like this tell ppl to get the Morning Star but doesn't even mention the Reinforced Club? That weapon is way better than the Morning Star and can get you easily through NG and NG+.
    P.S You get the Reinforced Club from the Undead Merchant for 350 souls.

    • @unboundking9742
      @unboundking9742 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Look, I love bashing on these video as much as the next guy, but check when the video dropped. I'm sure if this was redone, there would be plenty more tips and tricks, accumulated through the time this game has been out.
      Also: The reinforced club is a punk compared to the Large Club, I prefer it's move set as well.

    • @valkorusev
      @valkorusev 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have anything against the video, I was wondering if there is a reason, that they don't show the Reinforced Club, cuz maybe there's something I don't know. And I'm sorry but what you said may be true for complex mechanics or hidden stuff but that is a vendor sold weapon, if he knows the vendor he knows what he sells and the rest is just obvious if you know the basic stat mechanic of DS weapons. And also I recommend this weapon for a starter weapon, low stat req,easy access, and good easy to use moveset. If we are talking about best early accesable weapon, for me it's Great Scythe/Uchi.

    • @unboundking9742
      @unboundking9742 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's more than a good weapon for beginners, it's the go to one for low level runs. And I'm sorry but I think the video would include the reinforced club if it was redone, probably because this video was made extremely early, around a bit just after the game came out. That said, maybe the maker of the video just never tried or had ample time with the club back at the time of the video's creation, and thus the lack of mentioning it. This guide was the first I'd used, and thanks to it, I was able to go on to play DS2 without any help. The Uchi is nice, but I prefer to buy it from Shiva, or run over to the Iaito after I get to Firelink. But, I usually hate using katanas, so I grab the Great Scythe, probably my favorite weapon next to MLGS. I agree, the Great Scythe is definitely one of the best weapons to get, especially early on, I can't tell you how many times I've beaten the Hydra in Ash Lake with a +5 Great Scythe(Always go there right after a Catacombs run). This guide is good for beginners and DS is a great game, I just wish multiplayer was easier...

    This was my first beginners guide and I have now become a dark souls veteran I have beat ds1 and 3 (I don’t like ds2) I am going to give my opinion.
    1: the pyromancer is good but I like the worrier
    2: you only need 16 str to 2 hand the zwaihander
    3: if you r feeling good go through the graveyard and on the left is some stairs the final boss of this area is WEAK I’ve killed him with fists with out rolling
    4: drake sword only needs 30-50 arrows or you can cut the tale watch a speed run to find out how
    5: Havels weakness is he can be easily parried practice on longsword hollows
    6 and final: search how to find gravelord sword start as worrier if u get 16 str you can use a sword that makes the drake sword look weak have fun and remember PRAIS THE SUN🙂

      It's not the Stockholm talking, but the game is tough, but completely fair. Out of all my deaths, probably only the ones in low choppy fps town were the only ones I felt weren't my fault. And yeah, the jumping controls could be done better. They're not made for precision platforming... but it's not really required unless you want to go out of your way, so in a way is a challenge you impose on yourself. I prefer this to a game full of random QTE's, or split second deaths, even if you have a checkpoint right behind you.

    I actually usually start with the master key, as a deprived, then as soon as I get to firelink shrine, run, grab the bass cannon from the graveyard, go down the elevator to New Lando, turn right, use the key to the valley of the drakes, grab the sword, (can't remember what it is called), grab the dragon crest shield (if you are lucky) escape the undead dragon, run past the drakes, go to the right, and there will be an alcove in the left hand wall, run in, pull the lever, get the grass crest shield, (make sure to light the bonfire) cheese the black knight off the edge, run to the top of darkroot basin, turn to the right, keep running, light the darkroot basin bonfire, and run and grab the elite knight armor and wolf ring, the black knight's souls alone should be enough for you to level up your strength and faith enough to use the straight sword, use it on the fern-men (two heavy attacks should deal with them) and grind souls until you can get you dex to 12 and your strength to 16 now you can two hand the zweihander.

    • @Father.Osiris
      @Father.Osiris 10 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      DicKloadaLOVE "Dungeon Crawler" is a subgenre of the larger and less specific "RPG" category. Any game that has the player assume the role of a fictional character for the purpose of an interactive narrative is considered "RPG" (Role Playing Game). It's best to describe a game with it's subgenre so that people get a better understanding as to what it actually plays like.
      As for what you said I would tend to classify it more as an "Action-Adventure RPG" because most dungeon crawlers are associated with games like Diablo that serve the purpose of finding good loot, and the dungeons can be randomly generated. With Dark Souls however, the setting and "dungeons" really act as more of a static character that help tell the story and give you a sense of being an integral piece of the events that are unfolding, as apposed to them being merely an arena to kill enemies.

    • @DicKloadaLOVE

    An alternate (but much more suicidal) way to get to Dark Root basin is through Firelink Shrine. Go down the stairs, and then drop down to some more stairs and take the elevator to New Londo Ruins. From there, drop down and head right to another elevator leading to the Valley of the Drakes (you need the Master Key to open the door). Not only does this contain a shortcut to the bottom of Blighttown (skipping the Capra Demon fight) but also contains a way to Darkroot Basin. Cross the wooden bridge and head left, follow the cliff and cross another bridge, you'll see what looks like a dead dragon. Do NOT take the items as he'll kill you.
    Walk past the dragon (and here's the tricky part) you'll see a couple of Drakes. Run forwards, dodging the first drake and then head right and go towards the castle structure. There's a door and a staircase leading to an elevator to Dark Root Basin. From there, follow the cave to the bonfire @11:12 and then head right to get the Grass Cress Shield.

  • @brandonsullivan8408
    @brandonsullivan8408 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly great guide just wanted to add a quick short cut to blight town you can do from darkroot basin the cave with the bonfire head further in it and you’ll find an elevator go down the elevator and you’ll be in the valley of the drakes small area with som decent loot dodge the drakes attacks because at lvl 14 they’ll one shot you as well once you come out of the elevator there will be a small cliff to the left with a walkway equally small traverse the walkway at past the mini drake then continue on there is a bigger poisonous dragon that will wake up if you loot the items around it which include astora’s straitsword and a shield with a large nameless solider soul unless you wanna fight the dragon move past to a rope bridge and after that a small cave will open with enemies and walla you’re in blight town

    Later in the game, once you get to the Darkroot garden normally, you can fight a boss named the Moonlight Butterfly. Its ranged attacks can rip you a new one, so keep your distance and try to roll out of the way of most of them.
    Once you beat it, continue up the stairs and claim your prizes, among them is a key that will open Havel's keep in undead burg.

  • @xVGSx
    @xVGSx  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No problem. =)
    Humanity is used for a lot of things in Dark Souls. But the most prominent use, as you mentioned, is reversing hollowing. When you are Hollowed (Undead) you are not able to summon other players or helper NPC's into your game which can put you at a big disadvantage throughout the game. When you are unhallowed, sometimes you will see glowing white/orange marks on the ground, these are players you can summon to help you out with the current area, give it a try!

    A review & improvements on these methods. (2018)
    1. Starting as a Pyro with Master Key is amazing!.
    2. Grave robbing marathon is recommended, Also that mace is a good starting weapon.
    3. The Uchiganta isn't worth killing the Tradesman, Also Make sure you Buy the Residence Key, arrows & Repair kit for your Bonfire.
    4. Light crossbow is eh, but get it anyways.
    5. Racing past Havel is Needed.
    6. Race Past the Black knight get to the Cave he won't follow you & Get his attention then jump off the edge until he decides to follow you off the Cliff.
    7. Get the long bow & Leather Armor from that dead guy.
    8. In Darkroot Garden race past them to the Bonfire & have your Fire bombs ready. once clear rest at the bonfire.
    9. Don't go right to grab that soul when heading to The Fog you'll spawn tons of enemies, That will haunt your everlasting days.
    10. If you want the Partizan quickly pick it up after killing the Snake thing. P.s. your probably going to die.
    11. Get the Elite armor set.
    12. Get the Drake sword. It's very useful lay off it's special unless you want to spend tons of time fixing it. Also one handing it is amazing!
    13. HAVEL is a pain in the ass & you'll die so many times if you try to Fight Havel in the way described.
    I recommend running past him again Go to the Bonfire That was next to the Black Knight, & then race Havel upstairs he will follow you & not slowly either. One Hand your Drake Sword & clear the 4 Trained Skeletons. Head back up he won't be to far away, so be cautious when going back on the stairs, bring him towards the entrance by standing on the bricks, He has 2 attacks one Straight down this is the Time to hit him, DO NOT try to hit him if he does his angled cut. To make him perform his attacks stand still And when he starts his attack quickly roll back. He will sometimes chase you down your stairs but will go back up half way, Since he really just wants to go back down his stairs.

    Unmentioned on this guide is the dragon crest shield (next to astora's straight sword) in the valley of the drakes by the undead dragon which you can access right away with the master key

    Great guide! Here's a new tip - you don't need to attack the tail to get the drake sword. You can shoot the dragon's wing which is stationary, then again you have an opportunity to get a second shot in when the dragon moves after the first hit. I seem to be the only person who knows this lol!
