  • Hey All! Hope you enjoy this rendition of the Hollow Knight Title theme on the #lumatone in #17edo! I used a cello instead a viola (I really don't know why), and I switched up the tremolos between the instruments for fun. The colours might a look a little ugly this time lol, I was trying to imitate greenpath with some infection in it. By the way, the third hand is my friend's, Ayano. She's a really good violinist but she's able to pick up lumatone pretty quickly. She was also sitting at a 90 degree angle to the instrument, which is interesting as the isomorphism of the keyboard let her play it with no issues.

    Cool to see somebody using the potential for multiple manuals in something higher than 12EDO.

      Thank you so much for watching! Multi manuals are more or less fine until 22. You can totally do by a stretch 31 but you lose out on some ergonomics on some really good chords and scales

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, 17edo is weird that way, sharper M3s, flatter m3s, makes normal stuff uncanny and the tensions tenser!

    How many people with a Lumatone are out there at the moment?

      Hey thank you for watching! I got mine back in July 2022 and my order (serial) number was #138. I would assume by now there are around 200 people with a lumatone. They are starting to sell quickly!

      @@amj.composer Cool! The most prominent musician I have seen so far advertizing for it was the Dream Theater keyboarder, forgot his name, my bad. I wonder if the upcoming album of them will include some microtonal excursions! :-) Recently I also discovered a musician playing a custom made electric 17edo guitar, that was an interesting listening experience, too

      It's a shame they're so damn expensive right now. Otherwise I might get one myself

    • @amj.composer
      @amj.composer  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheApostleofRock I agree they're expensive. I was a little unsure after I made the purchase if I were to be 100% honest.
      But 8 months later I feel like I have just begun to scratch the surface of the ridiculous capabilities of this instrument. The price tag REALLY makes sense if you see what your other options are.

      @@TheApostleofRock I'm the third hand in the video. It's pretty cool to play around with even as a non keyboardist, I agree it is a big investment. There are other isomorphic keyboards in existence and you can probably get virtual keyboards of a similar layout as a tablet app but the real thing is pretty awesome

    Some of the notes felt very dissonant to me since I've heard the original theme so many times. (I think it's the 3rds and 6ths)
    I feel like a different EDO would fit better, but since I've only dabbled in microtonality I can't say which ones would sound good and which ones would feel too dissonant.
    The path of pain theme you've uploaded on the other hand fits really well in this tuning

      @user-jb8jn9uw4y 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Meh, that's lowkey an L take. You're not used to 17edo and that's it, I'm super glad he covered it in 17 because it feels very poignant and bittersweet. Other edos like 31 or 53 would've been too generic and 22 would just be weird in such a somber tune.

    • @AlbySilly

      @@user-jb8jn9uw4y I do really like their other hollow knight cover which was uploaded as a short (sealed vessel phase 2/path of pain). That cover is in 17edo as well and I really like it a ton. It's not a matter of just "not being used to 17", there's no need to gatekeep. If you love this version that's entirely fine, it's just that I personally prefer a different tuning when it comes to this song in particular.
      I listened to it again now and I think that I might just not like the sound of a piano on its own in this tuning since when the string came in it sounded fine to me, well except for the first note at 0:58 feeling off to my ears

    • @user-jb8jn9uw4y
      @user-jb8jn9uw4y 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@AlbySilly I'm not gatekeeping I'm just explaining why I don't think it's a good take.
      First of all, piano is one of those instruments that instantly sounds the most "off" in alternate tunings, way more than strings and winds. So saying the "piano sounds weird but the strings sound fine" is kind of a rookie thing to say. We all know that, it's nothing new.
      Secondly, 0:58 was my favourite part especially because of how grating (yet still diatonic) it was. That's literally the feature of 17tet, wide major thirds and narrow minor thirds. This is basic and vanilla 17edo that you're having trouble handling.
      "Feeling off to my ears" is very funny to me, you're literally listening to microtonal music, whay do you expect. You're used to 12tet so obviously it's gonna "feel off to your ears", genius.
