- What's it like teaching English in Taiwan ? Taiwanese teacher vs Foreign teacher
Recently, I received feedback from viewers, sharing that salaries for foreign English teachers in the English industry are relatively higher compared to English teachers in Taiwan. This inspired me to create this episode. This time, I invited teachers from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a native Taiwanese teacher, and a teacher from New Zealand, hoping that through their different experiences and backgrounds, they can provide various perspectives for everyone to consider. I hope you will enjoy this episode of interviews.

Yes! Elementary students match your energy! 👏
The first interviewer is talkative, I should have this kind of teacher to teach me English when I was a kid
5:48 wow!! Amazing interview!!!
"senior " wow nice word choice Jay

Teaching English varies so much depending on the job, like any other job. I've been doing it for 5 years and scored an incredible position 4 years in. Only natives should teach a language
I'm teaching English in Taiwan. 3 years now. Started at cram school but now moving to National Senior High School. They make some amazing and true points here. I would 100% agree they are very racist/prejudiced here in Taiwan with darker-skinned and even their own people. Being lighter-skinned and from America, we learn to treat everyone equally, but that is not the case in Taiwan. Deep down, they want white, captain-America-looking people teaching their kids. Taiwanese parents swarm those teachers like flies and don't care about certifications.
One problem I have with cram schools and kindergartens is that there's a point where it feels like a dead-end job. There are endless opportunities in Taiwan to teach English. I would say Taiwan is one of the best places in the world for English teachers. The gov wants to be bilingual by 2030, but there's a ceiling, specifically for salary and career growth. When you get old, parents won't want you as much as young teachers. And yes, I would say it is EASY Money, especially if you're light, native-speaker, and outgoing. We foreigners make double or triple of an average salary.
I really like the second interviewee here. That is the kind of teacher I would want if I was learning and people like her should definitely be paid more than some foreigners.
Are you English native speakers or Taiwanese ?
@@張玉珍-o6d American, been here 3 years
I think u should try to interview Michael 马米高 for this subject too.. it'll probably be quite interesting to have an ethnic Chinese perspective from a non China/Taiwan citizen😊
How and where did you learn to speak English?
I learned basic English in school, and now I am trying my best to find opportunities to practice speaking with native English speakers.
Not every White person is a native english speaker as you might realize since you claim be a native as well.

If you want to teach English in Taiwan then you need to know your legal rights. Private employers in Taiwan will never tell you about your rights regarding paid leave. Women are legally entitle to three days of menstrual leave per year (at 50% salary). None of the foreign female teachers at the schools I worked at were ever told, or knew about this right. You are also entitle to paid leave if your wife has a child. Some foreign teachers didn't even know about this. Those that did had to stand firm against their employers to take maternity leave. I had a school which told the foreign teachers that they had to start working working earlier (first five minutes earlier, the ten, then fifteen minutes) and not get paid for the extra time they were working. Fifteen minutes a day might not sound like much, but it adds up to 3,000 NT per month (at 600 per hour), and 36,000 NT per year that you aren't getting paid. My employer also cooked up a scam to defraud the government of tax payments. Taiwanese private employers are very dishonest, and they will never value a foreign teacher.

Are tattoos acceptable in Taiwan for teachers?
I think obvious tattoos aren't accepted anywhere for teachers, no ?
I wonder how Norelle acquired that accent. Also, I don't think possessing an Anglo Saxon makes one come across as advanced. Unless of course, it's as good as saying Taiwanese people discriminate against themselves. It's also weird that Taiwanese pride themselves as being democratic, which I would think is associated with being fair. Yet there's still unfair hiring practices and promotional considerations till today.
Well, There is no logic linked these kind of things. It's all about money.
I was also quite impressed by her fluency, she speaks better English than most Americans lol. Anyway, I totally get what she meant by “advanced” or “more decent”, sadly the truth is that there’s a hierarchy in terms of accents, British English tops the list followed by American English and then race is also factored in. In common local imagination, I guess some would believe that native speakers of these countries are only White so that would explain the differences in terms of treatment (discrimination, racism etc.). It would have been quite interesting to hear from an English teacher from Africa or India to have their take on this as I know for a fact that some locals wouldn’t want their kids to learn with native-English speakers from Africa (excluding SA) for instance. Oh and I’m quite surprised that New Zealand English comes after American English, I mean yeah most Kiwis’ vowel sounds are incorrect but the grammar is better so 🧐🤭.
@@wctch7009 there's only an hierachy if you deem so. i'm from Singapore and I honestly don't give a rats ass if you're white and have a clear anglo saxon accent. it's not gonna make me respect you more as a person, nor take you more seriously in the workplace. more and more younger people in my country are less blindly worshiping white people.
Parents want their kids to get the full genuine experience. So they prefer white people. Later in life they can say oh I had a teacher who looked like people from those parts of the world.
@@wctch7009
False. I'm an American working in Taiwan. British English is far from preferred. American is the international standard.
2:31 twenty percent
@chidoomexicooo 恩恩
