Fescue is a type of grass- cows usually love it. Nice video, I'm hoping to have a starter herd by autumn!

They are very sweet animals and great profit for breeding and their fleece.. And they don't get killed for meat so unlike other farm animals no cruelty involved by having them and profiting from them.. These people obviously don't know what they talking about.. They are the profitable livestock and cleaner than the rest of the farm animals and low cost to feed them, doesn't stink, poop only one spot

Zero market in my area for fiber. Couldn't get rid of it. Vet bills and worry about health were too high for us

Their fleece is the only reason to keep them

I'm looking at purchasing a property and starting a farmstead myself, I figured the fleece wasn't really the money maker they tend to generate anywhere from 5-10lbs a year which sells for 120-190 a pound so on the lowside you're looking at 600 - highside 1900 however I figured if you start off with a pair of females you could double the size of your herd in year 1, alpacas mature into adulthood in typically 2-3 years, adult alpacas can sell for $3000-10,000, I feel like the main money maker would be from the manure, on average an adult alpaca produces 4lb of manure a day x 365 = 1460lb a year, unlike cow or horse manure which has to compost for a year before it can be used as fertilizer alpaca beans can be used right away I see it selling on etsy for 15-18.50 a pound that's $60-75 worth of manure a day, $21,900-27,375 a year assuming you collected it all lol

Nobody is buying an alpaca fleece for $120-190/lb, lol! I buy full blankets for $30-50 with free shipping. Unless you're winning and are breeding blue ribbon national show alpacas, you'll be selling them for $150-500 depending on quality of fiber and color/ temperament. People give alpacas away when they want to downsize. Don't go into alpacas for the money. Get them because you love them and know your local fiber guild and co-op. Spinners and felters are your friends.

@@BookieLukie21 I'm not really in it for the money I just love the lifestyle but obviously, I want to be able to sustain that way of living if I do purchase alpacas I'll be purchasing show-quality alpacas I just have to work on finding a reputable breeder but thanks for the heads up I'll do more research on the fibers and processing them.

      Compared to horses.
In AZ they would be a lot easer. Not as much of a worm problem.

I'm in touch with the balance of life and enjoying the process. Pure empathy not delusional to where my food comes from.
