Well first she had to get signed to Columbia, and Tommy asked Michael for a favor to sing with Mariah to promote her, as it is customary for new artists at the label to get promoted. Tommy did not ask Mariah for a favor here. And this is years before they were married and Mariah was literally just out of high school and wasn't even famous yet, nor did she even have an album out at this point.
