It took her some five years to complete the onerous task. Somehow, adapting Austen can go wrong. Too much left out but she got it word perfect .It helped of course that the cast was so good. One of my very favourite films. As for the wonderful Alan Rickman, he has gone and another very gifted and loved entertainer has left us. Some say why does it matter, we don't know them ; it matters because they bring joy to our lives through the medium of film, or music as in David Bowie's case. Yes it has been horrid January.

What got me is when he hauled her (unconscious) at least a quarter mile or so, uphill and in the rain. Ask any firefighter - that's not easy. Not only that, but he remains camped outside her bedroom door during her illness, exhausted, in pain, with inadequate food and sleep, and yet wondering what he can do to further assist her family. THAT'S love AND sacrifice.
I always cry when I see this scene. You can feel, see and almost touch the love pouring off of Colonel Brandon. I don't think many women have ever been gazed upon like that!

You realize that makes no logical sense given the storyline and basic facts of reality, yes? Colonel Brandon's own brother was cruel. He was the exception even within his own family. Marianne was Dashwood sister who acted imprudently. Also, she was intimately connected with Willoughby who abandoned a pregnant young girl. Furthermore, a man who allows his character to be so easily swayed by the actions of a woman, or really anyone, is weak and hardly deserves to be called a man at all. People should look to their own mirrors for where improvements need to be made.
And of course it takes a Rickman to achieve so much emotion in this scene, with no words at all. Just lovely. His subtle ACHING for her throughout the film, so quiet-- so gentlemanly. Now THAT'S a man!

At first, it wasn't obvious why Col. Brandon fell in love at first sight with Marianne. But later we learned of the cruel separation between Col Brandon and his first love Eliza years ago, culminating in the tragic fate and demise of a young, once innocent woman. The sound of Marianne's pure, innocent voice and the sight of her untainted, youthful beauty must have provoked in Brandon all his memories for his lost love. Alan Rickman conveyed these all without a word.
I love the look on Brandon's face when he sees Marianne for the first time. The intensity of the stare it so powerful that it sends shivers down your spine and full of love. I can only hope that someone will look at me like that someday.
My favorite scene mostly because of the fact that it perfectly illustrates the rare, but beautiful and sincere form of true "love at first sight". Also, the word "gobsmacked" comes to mind. I absolutely love that word :3
i remember when i saw alan rickman on the dvd cover, i was thinking "he's so old" but then i saw the movie and i was totally in luv with him. he was just delectable in this movie! haha...and i also had a bad impression of him after i saw him in Robin Hood- prince of thieves. but he was so gentle and caring in this movie!!

We see Alan Rickman for the first time, but during one minute, he doesn't say a thing, and there's just his presence that we feel! Only with his face, he makes us understand why he is here, and how he will feel about Marianne (who is incredibly selfish!) Colonel Brandon is my favorite character, and Alan Rickman is my favorite actor, and man!

Alan Rickman played this scene to absolute perfection. His look of captivation just melts my heart and makes me want to be Kate Winslet! He and Kate Winslet were just phenomenal. (And the rest of the cast were superb - but I have a major soft spot for Alan Rickman)
