Fantastic log again especially the footage about 5.15 showing you sailing and the high sea behind you great stuff very very good a proper sailing sea dog no more motoring sea dog cheers mate
Hi Barry, watching this episode really made my day.............The JDL as we lovingly call her became a good buddy of mine in the 80s & 90s. She was built in 1953 in Brest, France, as a sailing sloop fishing boat. She was 'rescued' in the late 70s and Dave Burton became its second owner. He chartered the JDL to the British Sub Aqua Club and started expeditions to the Scottish outer islands, St Kilda being the Mecca. That's when I became acquainted with her. Dave then eventually sold her to John Reid, who still kept her in Leith Docks and there were many good parties and hard work during the decom and refit trips from Leith to Oban and vice versa. It was on such a refit trip, that I along with many others, helped John SQUARE RIG her, and yes, I have actually spliced the main brace, TWICE !!!!! The first square rigger to leave Leith in 67 years, so the local press reported. The last time I saw her was back in Leith whilst I was on a winter driving trip, and called in to say 'allo' and had bit of a night of it, reminiscing, and John said he had put her up for sale. I haven't seen her since that day until today and got the nicest surprise EVER !!! Thanks Barry for your video journals, I confess to only just finding you, and have binged watched as many as I could find up to the present FYI, my wife and I sailed our David Hillyard Moonffleet 36 ft GRP bilge keeler. A one off, from Bristol to the Northern Ionion Greece in 2004 and thats where we keep her. Nothing on your scale, but when the Doo Doo hits the fan, it doesn't matter, your location. Looking forward to your next episode. Barnacle Bern SY Cadbri.
I too knew JDL both before and after her conversion by Dave Burton. We were running a dive charter business round Mull at the time.(Sweet Caroline) Isn't it amazing how these things keep connecting us all over the years.
Really enjoying your channel. I love the honesty and humility that comes with your videos. A rare quality in this day and age. Thanks for all the great videos and good luck on your voyage.
Yes, I am another fan addicted to your videos. I started from the beginning after seeing one of your recent videos. Absolutely fantastic. I know it takes a lot of work to produce so than you!
Barry, if you don't have a flare gun you need to get one. Very effective if you are in distress, and depending on what kind of distress determines which way you point it when you use it. ( nod nod wink wink )
Thanks for posting you have some of the best real sailing videos ( good thing I guess since I don't think a bikini will suite you!) You deserve a beer after this one. Cheers Warren.
hi Barry - I hope your "knee-monia" gets better soon - as I said before carry on sailing south , turn left at Cape Town then sail to Richards Bay - pop in for a visit
Ahh yes, the good old proverbial bazooka, exactly what I would want under the floorboards for backup, nothing like a nice rocket up their rears to put them on the run! 💪🏼⚡️💥👍🏼😄
Im just back from Tenerife and used my European health card there available on line ,,saved me a fortune also only pay cost price of medicine in pharmacy...used it for 5 month
Hi Barry grrreat video I hope your knee gets better - glad your keeping a good eye on it . Re carrying a weapon, I think it could get you in more trouble than it's worth. Bon Voyage. Cheers John
Barry your coments above re the content are exactly what im looking for in a sailing video. Get on Patreon man at least can buy you a beer that way. And re the pirates Dont panick Mr Mannering.
Nice sincerity, the main asset of your vids. The security of European countries, and no European like the UK, now that Brexit has been forced. I know your now on other waters, good winds, and good beers wherever!
Just found your channel thanks to your friends from RAN Sailing! All I can say is 'Wow'! Gonna have to go back to the beginning & binge watch! Safe travels, sir!
Love the video's. You should sell caps "support crew Old Seadog" I'd buy! If you need a bazooka you've got bigger problems. Hope you're sailing clear.....
Hey, take care of your knee, two years ago I had full knee replacement, a year later, I had a infection in there, it hurt like hell, I was in the hospital for four weeks, I almost lost my leg, they could not spot or figure how to treat this type of infection, plus when I went home, I had to have two IVs per day at home for 6 weeks, they had to replace the same knee again, trying to get all the infection out, oh yea, after all this, I started having a reaction to the meds, and ended up in hospital again..take care brother
I was waiting when I would see you put that into action 2:10 remember you talking of wanting to give it a try but was to windy 🌬️💨⛵🤙🏻 it was pretty cool to see you put it in action sorry about the ongoing knee bra
Yeah, that was a pretty ragitty looking boat out there at 7:41 Sounds like you had a good plan though... coming up from Brazil 🇧🇷 to the Grand Canaries we always talked to Dakar on HF radio, never could understand Half of what they said.. 😩👎
Best yet Barry , life is exciting !!!! , such memories, I'm moored in the old pirate capital of StMalo in Brittany at the moment . Back of to your old stomping ground of Plymouth in a few days. Had trouble with my knee a few years ago , antibiotics and ibuprofen cleared it up but you must keep moving it , anyway got to go going to raid a few bars !!! Via con dios - roger aboard Florence May , StMalo
Just started following you here Barry (subscribed) and have been playing catch up on your videos. I've got you by a few years and live in the desert now but miss sailing immensely. Thanks for sharing your adventures and be carful out there!
Yes Barry your videos feel so real and down to earth. Really enjoy them. Can you tell me what camera you use, it's very clear and the colours look so natural. Can't wait for the next one, be safe, fair winds my matey ahhr.....
Love your videos and the small glimpses info your adventures! What kind of weapons restriction should an international sailor expect to suffer? 'Sure wish you had 'something' in a Locker somewhere! Please stay safe, compadre!
maybe raw organic garlic, taken daily, will get rid of that infection. it has to be chopped up fine. many take with honey, I eat mine in a salad or with artichokes and I chew it up to a pulp. it's a little hard to do but you can feel some of the good effects almost instantly.
Good stuff, looked like some fine/challenging sailing. Agree your double main-sheet system looks very practical for distance cruising. My boat is wooden so I'd need to put in some strengthened attachment points, port and starboard. Did you have a stay-sail up when you went to 3rd reef? Those Pirates... just wanted to be on Video!! Hope the knee is getting better. Fair winds compadre.
You should had approached that boat you will probably been having fresh fish for dinner that was an old style troller lol Barry good videos mate I am really enjoying them
Laser Lights and High Powered Flashlights can be helpful, painting someone with little red dots has a way of making them wonder, High Powered Flashlights can be quite blinding.. or you can always throw cans of beans at them... Glad none of the fore mentioned was needed..stay safe, I enjoy the videos.
Jesus christ Europeans are such idiots when it comes to self-defense it's super depressing, what the fuck do you think is gonna happen with your dumbass laser pointer illuminating a Somalian pirate skiff? Either you carry firearms with a full crew onboard and be emotionally ready to have some of your crew members die in a gun battle to save your boat, or you let them board and take what they want, and guess what Somalians aren't the white pirates of the 18th century they have no cultural or racial ties to you, they don't give two shits if they kill you, unlike the Caribbean pirates that kept the merchant crews alive knowing they'd come back.. (Or added them as crew if they captured the vessel) Modern pirates have been known worldwide for killing entire crews on boats for pleasure. South-Africans specifically target whites and are known for raping the women and butchering the men. I can't fucking believe you'd flash a spotlight at them thinking that would make any difference, jesus christ, I can't believe people think like that.
I love your channel including the stuff before you went sailing. Could you tell me . You mention a lot about getting the third reef in what is it and how do you set it up
I guess that was illegal fishing boat, they don't use AIS so no one can detect them!! , But then again, that was really scary!! I guess you need to get a good radar with guarding zone and alarm feature to protect your self from such hazardous conditions!!
Ah shit Barry I was so looking foreward to your pirate boarding...... but never mind.... glad your safe and sound. So what is a fortune to you.... as a medical professional, I am always interested in what health care costs are outside the US.... what did you pay for the doctor and meds if you don't mind ? Did they drain it ? Stay off it as much as possible and remember ICE is your best friend...
Well $400 usd is not to bad for that. Just to walk in to a ER here would be over 500. Meds and treatments extra of course. And possible a long wait time. I wish we had universal health care here in the US... but at this rate we will soon have chaos. Fair winds.
Barry, I've got so many questions for you. Currently, I'm binging all of your stuff, so it might be answered. If not though, I will see you out there, and just ask you then.
If I were cruising again I would purchase a high powered laser from a US company called Survival Laser. They are about $400-500 US and very powerful. You can use it to pinpoint your location in case you fell overboard or show another vessel your location. However, my primary use for it would be as last line of defense if someone was trying to board my boat. Exposure to the laser beam will instantly cause permanent blindness and if close enough cause burns. Special glasses must be worn by the user but they look like sunglasses and the laser is fairly small and looks like a flashlight. I'm not sure about the legal issues trying to purchase and ship one. I think it is a better option than a gun.
0 0 It might be a good tool in the hand of responsable people.BUT what can happen with that super laser in the hand of unexperianced youngsters, which only wanted to play with. Can everybody buy it ?
I was thinking Bazooka too, you sounded just like Sean Connery when you said that, LMAO! Aren't you allowed to arm yourself on the high sea's? or does it depend on your nationality? I'd want me a Gaston Flag and a chrome plated 50 cal where they could see it just for starters, Argg!
Hi Berry If it wasn't for bad luck You wouldn't have any luck at all, Weather, bad Knee ,no spy glass, Beanie wieners every night . A lot of us are wondering what costs are You say Marina Costs are High(how high) let us know. See You...
You might consider carrying an automatic pistol for self-protection. Stash it so the authorities can't find it, but somewhere you can get at it without too much trouble.
so, if its not too much to ask, how old are you friend? How long you been sailing solo like this and how much longer do you think you'll be going for? i'm lining up on sailing deep blue water and kinda just curious for my own plans. no offense meant!
Adventures of an old Seadog solo handling ... And 15 years farther past my plan to depart for circumnavigation. I have hope ! I might pull it off still.
What amazes me old sea dog is the fackt that you get there by hook or crook but it does not seem that you know anything about sailing. Which is a breece for others is mountain almost to high for you.
Guns and religion are two subjects sure stir to up lively debate in any marina. Parts of the Indian Ocean and the coast of S America are known for pirate attacks on cruising boats. Sometimes they are happy with your ready cash etc, but often they will kill the crew and take the boat. I would keep a semi auto shotgun loaded slug and 00 buck every other round. Start punching 2 inch wide holes in their hull at 50 yards and they might think about easier prey. Several cruisers have successfully defended themselves in such a manner. An epirb will just tell them where to find your corpse.
Every episode there is a major incident its getting a little old. SV Dellos has gone around the world like 7 times and the only drama they show is one ep where someone almost grabbed the outboard from the dingy.
Great episode Barry! We know the feeling when seeing a suspicious boat on the ocean. You handled it well! Fair winds!
Cheers for that.
Wing on wing 🙌🙌🙌 Woooohooooo.
That was a great Seannery!
oh shit! sorry about your sail, that sucks.
Surprise to see Jean de la lune, spent 3 months working on her in Eyemouth few years back
"I need a bazooka on board,..That's what I need".....LMAO Brilliant.
Barry, you're going to give all us old guy's a bloody heart attack! Love your videos!
Fantastic log again especially the footage about 5.15 showing you sailing and the high sea behind you great stuff very very good a proper sailing sea dog no more motoring sea dog cheers mate
Perfect Sean Connery impersonation, It would scare the hell out of the pirates LOL !

Great video, thanks Barry. Love the Sean Connery impersonation. If you decide to give up sailing MGM is looking for a new Bond, James Bond!
Poppy & the Princess --- Skaken, not stirred.
Arrrr. . . A blunderbuss'l cool their aggression. Great videos Barry.
Nice one Barry ( yet another nice one!)👍
I would be scared too but when you say "I just made dinner and could offer them some food " i just had to say that is very cool indeed
Totally entertaining. Your Connery impersonation is spot on.....losing sleep catching up.....

I've just recently discovered your channel, and have been looking at older episodes. You are very funny Barry.
You don't have a sling shot? Pirates fear a good wrist-rocket- cheaper than a bazooka too!
Hi Barry grrreat video I hope your knee gets better - glad your keeping a good eye on it . Re carrying a weapon, I think it could get you in more trouble than it's worth. Bon Voyage. Cheers John
Always great videos, please keep them coming Barry. You have a beautiful yacht, safe travels!
Love the tall ship festival over here in the Puget sound! Be blessed brava 🌬️💨⛵🤙
Beautiful set up
Never a dull moment Barry, keep up the good work.
Great video, interesting thoughts about being outside the Euro zone, very topical
Barry your coments above re the content are exactly what im looking for in a sailing video. Get on Patreon man at least can buy you a beer that way. And re the pirates Dont panick Mr Mannering.
Great films, Barry. Keep 'em coming. This is what I call a good sailing channel!
Nice video!!!
Nice sincerity, the main asset of your vids. The security of European countries, and no European like the UK, now that Brexit has been forced. I know your now on other waters, good winds, and good beers wherever!
While you there get a weather fax...
Another cracking, nail biting video Barry, I think we were all with you when them pirates came into view. Hope the knee is better now.

Wow. Exciting. Hope you found everything.
Well Done!
That part where you had the camera in the companionway looking backwards as you steered the boat was really good (brilliant as you would say)
Good to see you back Berry, i was wondering where is James when you need him?
Well done Mate! Keep 'em coming! Really enjoy this channel!
That's how I eat my sailing rations right out of the saucepan.
Barry You should be covered by your ehics card in the canaries I was treated in Fuerteventura on it
When the Brits leave the EU that's gone.
Good stuff mate!
Whew! Well told story. Love the accents and voices you do.
Gout, too much beer and pizza, I take Allopurinol to keep the uric acid in check
Cheers Bob, its sorted now. Yes was an infection.
Love the video's. You should sell caps "support crew Old Seadog" I'd buy! If you need a bazooka you've got bigger problems. Hope you're sailing clear.....

Dammit mate, take care of your knee!

Hi Kevin. Camera info I think is in the description blurb. Panasonic Camcorder, Sony action cam and Go pro. Thanks for watching.
How do you know it was an infection?
Do you have an increase in temperature?
Increase temp indicates infection.
no fever no infection.

That old boat with tall mast, what type of boat is that? Are they hard to find on market?
Good stuff, looked like some fine/challenging sailing.

If it didnt look like a fishing vessel then Id be a bit worried.

these unidentified fishing boats "fish" for one thing: cocaine for Europe and heroin for America!
Funny he's panicking over a boat not having AIS when just a year before he didn't have it either...
@@JCrook1028
But he KNOWS he isn't a pirate.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 But no one else did.... That's the point.
Isn't it strange that some of the most famous sea dogs and pirates had peg legs or maybe I shouldn't have brought that up :)
Everything I worry about on the water has just become absolutely nil. Anyone who says they would not be shitting their pants....is a damn liar! LOL
Ah shit Barry I was so looking foreward to your pirate boarding...... but never mind.... glad your safe and sound. Am good now Bob. In the UK and europe healthcare is free.( Payments made every week from wages)I had to pay about $400.
Well $400 usd is not to bad for that. Just to walk in to a ER here would be over 500. Meds and treatments extra of course. And possible a long wait time. I wish we had universal health care here in the US... but at this rate we will soon have chaos.
Fair winds.
Arrrr they pirates. (FTFY)
Can you legally cary high powered fire arms on board to defend your self???
9:36 RIP Sean Connery
Barry, I've got so many questions for you. Currently, I'm binging all of your stuff, so it might be answered. If not though, I will see you out there, and just ask you then.
Where were your binauculars?
Do you carry arms for protection?
No guns on the boat.
WHAT DO YOU INTEND ON DOING IF YOU RUN INTO A MEAN SOB
If I were cruising again I would purchase a high powered laser from a US company called Survival Laser. They are about $400-500 US and very powerful. You can use it to pinpoint your location in case you fell overboard or show another vessel your location. what is that flag in 1:01 for?
What amazes me old sea dog is the fackt that you get there by hook or crook but it does not seem that you know anything about sailing. Which is a breece for others is mountain almost to high for you.
Fly an American flag. The pirates will think you are armed that way. And leave you alone.
You won't be quick to say you love pirates again...will you?
Its called musty not old worldly
As an American I just wonder why you don't have guns to protect yourself against pirates.
Guns and religion are two subjects sure stir to up lively debate in any marina. Parts of the Indian Ocean and the coast of S America are known for pirate attacks on cruising boats.
