Yugo was a car that was built for the average Yugoslavian Joe at the time. It was cheap, relatively reliable, with simple parts that you could fix yourself most of the time. It was the Beetle of the Yugoslav people, it motorized the nation at a relatively small cost. Sure, it looks funny now, 35 years after it was first designed. It still was much better than most of it counterparts from eastern Europe, and certainly much more affordable than most western European cars. It satisfied different needs than those of the average western consumer. They made a mistake by launching it in the USA. They should have aimed China, they were still riding bikes at the time.
Yugo, I can't. What do you call the shock absorbers in a Yugo? Passengers. How do you get a Yugo to go 80mph? Push it off a cliff. What do you find on the last page of a Yugos owners manual? A bus schedule. Why do Yugos never suffer from end damage in a collision? The tow truck takes the impact. Why do Yugos have rear window defrosters? To keep your hands warm while pushing it. How you you double the value of a Yugo? Fill the gas tank. How do you repair a Yugo? Take off the radiator cap, push car off cliff, drive new Yugo under and fit radiator cap back on. 30-mile/3-day warranty included! What do you call a Yugo with dual exhausts? A wheelbarrow. How do you make a Yugo go faster downhill? Turn off the engine. How do you make a Yugo go faster uphill? Toss out your passenger. A man runs into a car shop and says give me a fuel cap for a Yugo? +KlunkerRider Elvis Presley faked his death and bought a Yugo, a joke based on a 1989 conspiracy theory by The Sun newspaper suggesting he had a Skoda.
yugo is a durable ride, i drove it the whole summer of 07 in serbia, put on 6000km, and had no problems with it, one of the best summers of my life. respect the yugo
Recently bought one as well, mk1 from 1979. What I noticed tho in this video when Jeremy at 00:27 turns the steering wheel and nothing happens, is that it is exactly the same in my car. However, when I do that it actually turns. It's very odd and I quite like it. For some reason around 15 degrees left or right when driving straight feels incredibly light, almost like there's nothing there at all even if you're driving fast or slow. But, if you just turn it 1 degree, you'll actually notice it starts to turn in a surprisingly precise manner depending on the direction you're turning. I have absolutely no clue what function this serves but only the 340 has it from the cars I've driven and it makes for some rather precise cornerings.
A great unintended feature of the Yugo is that you get a howling engine noise in 4th gear above 50km/h. It annoys you so much that you get used to driving in 5th gear at low rpm on an open road just to get rid of the noise. It deprives you of quick accelleration so driving safely becomes a habit. And as bonus points: you conserve fuel and reduce the strain on the engine that way. And if you do like the sensation of driving fast - you get the engine howling easily at just 50km/h which is far less dangerous than the speeds you would have to be going at to get the howling out of most of other, more powerful cars.

When Yugo's came to the US in the early 80's they were all the rage. The general public was mesmerized by the fact that a brand spanking new car could be purchased for under $4,000. Car dealerships were selling them as fast as they could get them in. Unfortunately, the love affair ended as quickly as it had started. Yugos were utter junk and pieces of the car were literally falling off it soon after the customer drove it off the lot. That's when the second problem started. Car owners brought back their Yugo's to the dealership for repair only to find out the dealerships had no Yugo parts. That's right, Yugo had not yet stocked repair facilities with any parts for their cars. Shipments of parts sometimes took months to arrive in the US. Can you imagine buying a new car and having it break down during the warranty period only to be told it would be several months before it could be repaired? Yugo exited the US market almost as quickly as they had entered it. In the United States they have the dubious distinction of being the worst car ever sold here.

I had a Yugo GV..... It actually ran strong for the 80,000 miles I had it... I hated it because it was slow, and cheap, but it was definately a runner...
Yugoslav M 84 tank was faster then that British tank ...68 km /h vs British Chalinger 56 km/h,had much bigger range 700 km vs 450 ,it had almost double Horse power per weight then British Tank but you newer saw that some Yugoslav TV used M 84 tank to destroy British car and talk shit about it
he is talking crap about other nations and is talking so proud about "british enignering" talking about tank..and in matter off fact Yugo was better and much longer lasting then british austin metro even was much cheaper and Yugo Sana was Mercedes for it
Please the Yugo cars were shit. Heck the newer model they tried to bring in the GV45 broke down during a road test. Cars were made with dents in them off of the factory floor. I guess they were more careful with military hardware when it came to production.
i droved Yugo for 10 years..never let me on the road..it was my first car and very cheap to maintain (almost all parts were 10-20 deutche marks and replace for 10 minutes) ..off course now if i would drive it it would be sht ..its car that came out 1979 but it was good for what it was build at that times..cheap A to B.
One potential Zastava / Yugo model that might have actually been worthwhile had it been built would be one derived from the smaller Autobianchi A112 as a more direct replacement for the Zastava 750, whilst allowing for a 5-door variant of the Yugo 45.
Actually, yugos were very popular when they came out here in the us they were insanely cheap but what killed them was they were very unreliable. Also they were in competition with the used market, for the same price you could have bought a used ford or Toyota that was 100 times better.
I learned to drive in an original Mini, and after that, my grandfather gave me a Yugo 45. Even though I had a Cinquecento after, but the Yugo was the closest I ever drove to the Mini. I don't get why all of you think the Yugo 45. If you have not driven one, don't judge it unless you judge its looks. For me, that is where the moaning stops.
@TheSkodarnaCrew ever heard of the thrust ssc?? or Aston martin? or the mini? or the Austin 7, noble, cateram, jaguar, lotus, Bentley, triumph, rolls royce, mgb ect
CNC MNE don't know shit about tanks do you? A glorified T-72, a piece of garbage itself. Yugoslav civil war showed what shit tanks they were, turrets usually blown completely off laying alongside the chassis. Yeah, real quality there...
The car is not perfect but it's not that bad as he saying.Back in 1980,it was a great car for little money, very economical, not so slow as this idiot showing. It is very funny to drive.Even Americans liked him, because it's low cost, fuel consumption is very low, parts are cheap and it was reliable (i'm talking about 45).For 1980 it was one of the best in it's class and most cheapest.
+1100HondaCB its not that bad to be honest. it was built like a tank like every Volvo were but there was a few problems with this. the engines were a bit underpowered for a car that heavy, didn't handle too well and the MPG wasn't that great. however the mechanics were bombproof and like a Volvo if you crashed it barely dented it. the Volvo 340 is not even comparable to a communist car
michael jagger I have just bought a 1984 Volvo 340DL 1.4 and drove it 300 miles in one day. It holds its own on the motorway without any problem. The MPG I find isn't too bad although my one is running a bit rough due to a carburettor problem. As for handling, I can easily through it into corners without any problems. As I said, I did 300 miles in one day and could walk afterwards as the seats are very comfortable. Unlike communist cars, at least the Volvo 340 appealed to the middle-classes.
michael jagger Sold about 1.3m from 1976-1991. My parents also had a 1983 Volvo 340DL from 1989-2001 when rust finally killed it. That car was never off the road.
+Sivert Nordang true they're certainly not the best to look at in terms of a sleek sports car... however, they look big, beefy and machine-like, which is the main thing most people like about old Volvo cars like that.. strangely its one of my favourite models, despite its...unique looks
@zvucnjak Wasn't that originally for the Trabant? Anyway, here's another one. The Yugos actually had demisters on the back window to keep your hands warm while you pushed it.
@2326709 We're not talking about value. We're talking about whether the owner purchases good-quality parts & installs them correctly. Since we're talking old cars, there's a good chance that it was already purchased for a low price, so there's no sense in trying to sell it for a higher price later on. Come to think of it, buying a car just for the resale value never made much sense to me in the first place...
Pa dobro, ovaj Yugo 45 je '81 godište pa je sranje, ali ovi ostali modeli kao što su GV, GVX,GVL,GVS,AX, EX...su dosta bolji po pitanju svega od ovog Yuga.
1. You do not drive a Yugo, Yugo drives you. 2. Never drive a Yugo without your toolbox (takes care of the window and a number of other problems). 3. If you want Yugo to go fast, drive it like you stole it! 4. Shifting without the clutch is the evidence that this particular Yugo has developed it's own sequential gearbox over the years - so, it's an organism, not a car. Jeremy killed poor Yugo :(
A lot of people say the Yugo is the worst car in history. I disagree. No, I think the worst car ever...is the Toyota Corolla. See, the upside of the Yugo is that you can expect it not to last very long. A Corolla, on the other hand, will just keep on going. I've seen Corollas from the 80s that look like they've been driven through central Baghdad on the opening night of Desert Storm that still start up and run like the day they rolled off the line.
yes, the 360 was a very good car it had transaxle system thus a very good weight balance, very low weight but still high safety the b200 engine was decent but the corrosion protection wasn't very good compared to bigger volvos and the variomatic transmissions weren't very reliable and the 360 sedan looks quite good also
I wish Clarkson would not be so harsh on the Volvo 340/360 because my parents had two of them and they did high mileages with no problems and were built solid. It was the rust that killed them in the end like all 80s cars.
I know for a fact that the U.S. version of the Yugo could do 70 mph all day long (one of my cousins had one.) I for one am waiting for the Tata Nano to come here!
I leaned to drive in an original Mini, and then my grandfather gave me his Yugo 45 and even though I had a Fiat Cinquecento, the Yugo's drive is the closest to the Mini. Why are you judging ot if you never drove one? If you never drove one, you can only judge the looks. Trust me, it is a good car.
The Volvo 300 Series was actually pretty good, with tiny bit of modification, it outcorners most other cars from its era. They should've done a V6 version tho.
Isn't it better to donate than to destroy the car ? What you were trying to tell us. It is better to be savage than a good man ? Honestly, you are going on my nerves!
Volvo 3-series was originally developed as a Dutch DAF 77, but after Volvo bought DAF, they changed minor things and the 77 came into life as the Volvo 300-series.
He was making reference to the fact that Bentley wouldn't lend top gear a car, after saying they would, so when Clarkson got Albania he had no car for the film, so they replaced it with a Yugo and called it a Bentley as a slap in the face to Bentley.
Yugo is classic because people had chance to by one, and live with Yugo. It wasn't so advanced like many cars in that time, or big and fancy, but it was small, humble car, but people loved the Yugo because he was more than car, he was an good friend. He gave every man ,who owned the Yugo, to remember Yugo for some good thing which happened in his life. Now look at this video, this is not Yugo, it is a Zastava 101, but you will get the point /watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=NtHymI4QJeM
What about the Nissan Sunny that comes after? He launches it with a medieval catapult :D .. Had this VCR when i was a kid. Jeremy Clarkson Unleashed on cars i think it was called
@Chelu2002 I was drive Yugo 45 and it was made with both mph and km/h for American population, and it have gauge gravured up to 115mph or 185km/h i was abe to made 115mph with 4th gear with almost full throttle. Clock was on 115 but sounds of engine was going throttle up, it was accelerating over 115mph. The car was have original parts, nothing custom made.
Well, I like Jeremy Clarkson and TopGear, but he got a first generation Yugo with the smaller tail lights, plus he got it really old. If he got a more recent and newer one, he wouldn't have the problems. Also, he is comparing a city car to a normal every day car, but the Yugo is a small city car, not meant to go fast.
yes the 120mm gun going off was fake. but the real tank cannon sound can be herd from 5 miles away and would scare people. real recoil would rock the hole tank back...still good
@2326709 The majority of auto parts chains may not supply parts for that car, but there's a damn lot of independent suppliers for that car. In some cases, new cars MAY be cheaper to repair, but are they necessarily easier to repair? Chew on that one.
Here's another joke for a Yugo: How do you fix a broken Yugo? - Take of the radiater cap, push it down a cliff, and drive a new yugo with the old radiater cap on. (3 day 30 mile warranty included!!)

Blow up a Prius please. The Toyota Prius is a car that deserves to be blown up.
Search Billy bob is mad on prius it's not blowing it up but it's something
he did blow it up. I don't remember the name of the show but he did it in one of his dVDs.
Saif Irshad clarkson the good the bad and the ugly video he doesn't blow it up but he blasts it to the wreckers yard with a large variety of guns finishing off with a ma deuce 50 calibre
+lemkelegion The Prius is pretty much an unachievable goal for someone driving such a pathetic heap of sh*t like that Yugo.
He already did and a corvette as well
4:02
So no one's gonna mention that this is the first moment Jeremy Clarkson used a hammer in Top Gear?
2:44 - when you do you best Arnie impersonation.
Yugo is a collector's item now. I would love to have one. Seriously.
Go to Serbia - there are plenty of them! :)
yugo 45 was my first true love
I had a Yugo GV..... It actually ran strong for the 80,000 miles I had it... I hated it because it was slow, and cheap, but it was definately a runner...
Yugoslav M 84 tank was faster then that British tank ...68 km /h vs British Chalinger 56 km/h,had much bigger range 700 km vs 450 ,it had almost double Horse power per weight then British Tank but you newer saw that some Yugoslav TV used M 84 tank to destroy British car and talk shit about it
dzonikg Y Are u butthurt
he is talking crap about other nations and is talking so proud about "british enignering" talking about tank..and in matter off fact Yugo was better and much longer lasting then british austin metro even was much cheaper and Yugo Sana was Mercedes for it
Jeremy Clarkson has often mocked the British cars as well, there isn't to be touchy.
Yu-go nowhere
Yu-go Yugoslavia
The Yugo looks like a fun project to add lots of power/larger motors and chassis upgrades.
he always faked stuff
Actually, yugos were very popular when they came out here in the us they were insanely cheap but what killed them was they were very unreliable.
Also they were in competition with the used market, for the same price you could have bought a used ford or Toyota that was 100 times better.
advanced anti wiggling system for alcoholics
I learned to drive in an original Mini, and after that, my grandfather gave me a Yugo 45. Even though I had a Cinquecento after, but the Yugo was the closest I ever drove to the Mini. I don't get why all of you think the Yugo 45. If you have not driven one, don't judge it unless you judge its looks. For me, that is where the moaning stops.
Kad naučiš da voziš Yuga, naučio si sve da voziš.
@TheSkodarnaCrew ever heard of the thrust ssc?? or Aston martin? or the mini? or the Austin 7, noble, cateram, jaguar, lotus, Bentley, triumph, rolls royce, mgb ect
They didn't use the tank's canon. The car is still there.
+Patsik y, no recoil
Poor tree! The indignity of having a Volvo 340 crashed into it!
XD nice set of wireless explosives
Jeremy is too harsh on the Volvo, I just bought a volvo 340 for some drifting and iceracing in the winter. A great car for 300€
And I bet that a Yugoslav M-84 tank would reduce that Chieftain along with Jeremy to ash.
CNC MNE don't know shit about tanks do you? A glorified T-72, a piece of garbage itself. Yugoslav civil war showed what shit tanks they were, turrets usually blown completely off laying alongside the chassis. Yeah, real quality there...
The days before Jeremy became an actor. Better times.
my professor drives a yugo... *just so you know im from uk
Nisi bogdane ti englez
Bogdan kulic englez jesi kyrac
Wow, Jeremy with a full head of hair...how old is this video, and was it part of Original Top Gear or some other program?
yugo nece dugo :)
Acke G hhehehe
Nadživio je državu u kojoj je proizvođen. Malo koji auto je to postigao.
If I'm not mistaken, that Volvo model was not actually built by Volvo, just sold under the same brand name.
Goodbye, Mr. Yugo! :-D
Cuti govno malo god buy ti govanjak jugo najbolji na svetu
Laki Viljanac SHUT UP! Yugo is big Shit.
It's a miracle that chieftain didn't break down on the way to the car.
Jeremy is not an idiot.
I actually really like the 340, haha. Should try a Yugo ;).
Why does he hate the Volvo so much? I don't understand.
1100HondaCB it cant have been that bad since it sold over 1m
michael jagger Sold about 1.3m from 1976-1991. My parents also had a 1983 Volvo 340DL from 1989-2001 when rust finally killed it. That car was never off the road.
1100HondaCB my neighbour had one 340 GL Limited Edition 1.4 i can still hear that renault engine it had in it. it was bombproof
Damn, this must be from the old series..
Wich one, if i may ask?
Volvo's ugly? WTF
+VX97 vovo's are ugly, and you have to accept the truth
+Sivert Nordang true they're certainly not the best to look at in terms of a sleek sports car... however, they look big, beefy and machine-like, which is the main thing most people like about old Volvo cars like that.. strangely its one of my favourite models, despite its...unique looks
ChaosHusky somehow I can't dissagree
+VX97 most cars from the 80s and 90s are ugly
+Home of the Mad yes I think that's the worst period for cars...
@zvucnjak Wasn't that originally for the Trabant? Anyway, here's another one.
The Yugos actually had demisters on the back window to keep your hands warm while you pushed it.
yugo je masina
@2326709 This car was produced until two or three years ago!
So the parts is still available! :D
Surprisingly the biggest spare parts market for Yugo in Western Europe is in...
GREAT BRITAIN
Volvo's rock!
Jeremy killed poor Yugo :(
what a hateful car.
clarkson providing his own sound effects there.
A lot of people say the Yugo is the worst car in history. I disagree.
No, I think the worst car ever...is the Toyota Corolla.
See, the upside of the Yugo is that you can expect it not to last very long.
A Corolla, on the other hand, will just keep on going. I've seen Corollas from the 80s that look like they've been driven through central Baghdad on the opening night of Desert Storm that still start up and run like the day they rolled off the line.
yes, the 360 was a very good car
it had transaxle system thus a very good weight balance, very low weight but still high safety
the b200 engine was decent but the corrosion protection wasn't very good compared to bigger volvos and the variomatic transmissions weren't very reliable
and the 360 sedan looks quite good also
yeah but how fast does it go now? not so good now is it!
It was actually designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also designed the Lotus Esprit, Delorean, Alfa 159 and Maeserati Ghibli...
I wish Clarkson would not be so harsh on the Volvo 340/360 because my parents had two of them and they did high mileages with no problems and were built solid. It was the rust that killed them in the end like all 80s cars.
Yugo was still more reliable than any British car
My brother went out of his way to talk me into buying a Yugo. He was certain it was the next Beetle
I know for a fact that the U.S. version of the Yugo could do 70 mph all day long (one of my cousins had one.) I for one am waiting for the Tata Nano to come here!
Tata nano stopped production sadly
I leaned to drive in an original Mini, and then my grandfather gave me his Yugo 45 and even though I had a Fiat Cinquecento, the Yugo's drive is the closest to the Mini. Why are you judging ot if you never drove one? If you never drove one, you can only judge the looks. Trust me, it is a good car.
The Volvo 300 Series was actually pretty good, with tiny bit of modification, it outcorners most other cars from its era. They should've done a V6 version tho.
what was the name of this programme?
I wonder what Mr. Clarkson would say if he knew there were people in Europe turning Yugos into tuner cars.
What about the Nissan Sunny that comes after? He launches it with a medieval catapult :D .. Had this VCR when i was a kid. Jeremy Clarkson Unleashed on cars i think it was called
lol, that explosion was so set up, also nice sounds effects.
"I hate this car so much, I'm going to crash it"
classic
the tank i thought for a sec had a Detroit in it. Got to love those 2strokes!!
ya that looked pretty dumb.... the 12cm anti-tank round aimed at the engine block wouldve probably demolished the car completely.
@Cookiefan1876 lol did you have to pay RAC to check that?
Well, I like Jeremy Clarkson and TopGear, but he got a first generation Yugo with the smaller tail lights, plus he got it really old. If he got a more recent and newer one, he wouldn't have the problems. Also, he is comparing a city car to a normal every day car, but the Yugo is a small city car, not meant to go fast.
thanks for your advice, Jerez.
what year was that beautiful Volvo
Maybe 1985?
yes the 120mm gun going off was fake. but the real tank cannon sound can be herd from 5 miles away and would scare people. real recoil would rock the hole tank back...still good
@2326709 The majority of auto parts chains may not supply parts for that car, but there's a damn lot of independent suppliers for that car.
That thing looks like it needs a RWD layout with a 13b peripheral ported rotary and a gear box of an FC3S.
