Dude the ending to The Bourne Identity in the books is one of the best I've ever read. Ludlum was truly a master of suspense and intrigue.
Also, why no Carlos in the movies? 😭😭 My friend and I are both Ludlum fans and we agree that Benicio Del Toro or Antonio Banderas would have made a great Carlos for the time these movies came out.

Hi Mary, I am glad you enjoyed this film, I think, all 5 are worth reacting to, so I hope you will do that at some point. As for the Mini Cooper this was the 2nd film to highlight it`s amazing performance, checkout the 1969 film (The Italian job) for the first. It became a popular car for rallying, it won the Monte Carlo Rally for the 1st time in 1964.

The Bourne Identity was actually born from an Emmy winning television miniseries in the US back in 1988. Like all miniseries of the day, it had a limited number of episodes, this one had only 2. Richard Chamberlain stared in it. I saw it on TV at the time and thought it was really good. Same basic premise, with all the main characters.

Better than John Wick? This was the beginning of the shaky cam quick cut edit which worked here but became exaggerated in the sequels almost to the point of parody. John Wick was like a response to this series. Also I'm just being devil's advocate here because yeah, the movies are freaking awesome. Can't wait to see Mary's reaction to the beginning of the next one ... 🥺

@@haydnrlong Yes, better than John Wick. Bourne was stabbing people with pens before John Wick even thought of picking up a pencil. 😆 Bourne single-handedly launched the action subgenre of one-man army with a mysterious past. Without the franchise it's possible the John Wick, Equalizer, Taken, etc. franchises wouldn't exist.

When *The Bourne Identity* was released in 2002, the James Bond producers/writers realized they needed a new type of James Bond, because the contemporary James Bond looked stupid next to Jason Bourne, resulting in Daniel Craig's rough version of Bond and *Casino Royale* (2006).

    • @TehFrenchy29
      @TehFrenchy29 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Half the Bourne movies, half the Austin Powers movies which were coming out around the same time (the first was I think 1997 but Goldmember was the same year as this) because they so thoroughly made fun of the older Bond films. Direct references to Connery and Moore and their films are all over the Austin Powers trilogy, and Lazenby / Dalton / Brosnan are all referenced at least indirectly a little bit. It lampooned the "Bond formula" so effectively that the Bond producers felt they couldn't do "another Bond movie" without seriously shaking up the formula and doing something different (for Bond at least).

Years ago, when George W Bush was still President, a news story aired that was very interesting. Someone called police because a tenant hadn't pay his rent and wanted him removed or access to the space. They said that when police got inside they found passports for the same person under different names from around the world. The discovery also included money from around the world and two computers with a different keyboard interface. The news casters had fun asking "is Jason Bourne out there?" In the story they said police became very concerned for what they discovered. It was funny and interesting at the time. Then years later there was an elderly man that went to the bathroom on a plane headed to Canada. When he came out of the bathroom he was a young Asian man. He was heavily disguised. These two stories always stick out as clear evidence of spies living and working around us.

I noticed your happiness in discovering this movie is mostly in Europe. I wondered if you'd reacted to the French 90's classic trilogy Les Trois Coluer (my French is terrible, sorry) - It's the Three Colours Trilogy, with each movie being themed around that part of the French flag, Red, White and Blue, or Equity, Liberty and Fraternity. Each movie is fascinating in its own right, but it's all interconnected, following different people as an insane plot develops between them. The sound is beautiful. It's also a great look at Paris in the early 90's.

I would rather someone look away at certain parts than force themselves to watch it or not watch the movie at all.

I love this movie. The story and the pacing seem perfect for a thriller. One of my favorite things about it is the style of martial arts he uses. I study martial arts and I’ve always been a little annoyed by the flashy fight scenes in most movies that have unrealistic, unnecessary, and ineffective moves. It’s so nice to see him use the most direct and economical moves to acheive his goal of subdueing his opponent. It’s a really awesome style of martial arts.

Don't let anyone deter you from watching the fourth film, THE BOURNE LEGACY. It stars Jeremy Renner. The timeline of LEGACY is the same as THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM. They masterfully splice them together, integrating several snippets of ULTIMATUM into LEGACY. LEGACY has more meat on the story. It is my favorite of all of the five films. The progression of the programs is consistent throughout. At the end of ULTIMATUM (I see you have watched it) they are talking about the successor to Treadstone, Blackbriar. In LEGACY, Renner's character is in the program that follows Blackbriar, and, a character enters in that is from the program that is the successor to that program. Successive iterations in which the agents are "improved" over the preceding agents.

I'm absolutely shocked you haven't watched all the John Grisham novels. Every single one is centered around the law. The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time To Kill, Gingerbread Man, Runaway Jury, The Chamber...with some of the biggest actors of the screen: Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Tommy Lee Jones, Mary-Louise Parker, Susan Sarandon, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McCounagh-alright-alright-alright, Sandra Bullock, Kenneth Branaugh, Robert Downey Jr., John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Chris O'Donnell, Genehackman, Faye Dunaway...statistically it doesn't seem possible that you have not seen these movies.
John Grisham Bio: "A graduate of Mississippi State University and Ole Miss Law School, John Grisham obtained his law degree in 1981 and practiced law for about 10 years, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. "The Bourne Trilogy" is my favorite spy-movie series. I have seen a bunch of the "James Bond" movies, but they never really hooked me. "Mission Impossible" is a ton of fun and I like the franchise a lot, but none of them hooked me the way Bourne did. And shaky cam scenes make me physically ill and frequently set off hallucinations from my schizophrenia as well, so it really says a lot in my eyes that I still love the series so much given how the use of shaky cam increases through the next few movies, forcing me to either look away during most of the fights or to watch on a screen too small to set me off. Some people dislike the later movies, but I actually like the whole Bourne series and feel they're all worth watching. The first three are by far the best, but they're all entertaining at least. Plus, as a side note, I always watch through the credits of movies to see if there are any mid- or post-credits scenes, but the Bourne movies are some of the only movies I actually look forward to the credits for, because the song they use slaps! And, if you listen to them all, it's a different mix of the song in every single movie's credits. It's not my usual type of music, but I absolutely love that song. Or songs. Or remixes of the one song. Whatever. ✌🤓

The original Mini Cooper production ended in 2000. Considering that it started in 1959 that's quite extraordinary. The best marketing campaign for the Mini was its success in racing in the 60s, most notably winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 64, 65 and 67 against the much more powerful competition. In 66 they would also won, but were disqualified because the lights weren't stock. I got a chance to drive my grandmas Mini on some German country roads about 20 years ago. In my mind every Mini is a pretty much a race car ;-).

If you liked the actress who played Marie, I would recommend Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) as she plays the main character in that film. But make sure it's the original German version. Not any kind of dub.

I highly recommend Robert Ludlum as an author, the guy who wrote the novels on which this series is based. The movies are great, but the books are ten times better, especially the first. 😲 Just be aware there's another author named Eric Van Lustbader who took over the series and I can't vouch for his books. But Robert Ludlum 👍👍. Great Cold War espionage novels.

I'd love to see Mary react to Spoorloos (1988), probably one of the best Dutch films of modern times. Since she likes thrillers and unraveling mysteries, this should be right up her street. Just don't watch the terrible Hollywood remake by mistake.

12:29 "If this is not the best ad for Mini Cooper, I don't know what is." 🤔 You should really consider watching the Italian Job (2003). It came out one year after this film, and was an even _better_ ad for the Mini. So much so that I'm pretty sure it caused a surge in sales and market share, at least here in the U.S.

This movie did repouplarize mini Coopers in America again, and then like a year later, they did a Hollywood remake of "The Italian Job" that mini cooper probably paid a lot of money for product placement to have made. The original "The Italian Job" was a British heist movie from 1969 starring a young Michael Caine, and the remake had a big star studded cast, and they did some action packed chase scenes with new suped up mini Coopers that really made them popular again in America after that. Even new little Fiats and smart cars were popular for a while off of the mini Cooper hype. Also, I can't remember if it was before or after, but around the same time, the new Volkswagen bugs were a popular thing in America too. With America's reputation for big cars compared to Europe, there was a period when tiny European cars were hip again here.

These are smarter films than most people even realize, just starting with languages. "Team America" pokes fun at the low standards of audiences, much as "Idiocracy" does. Sadly they don't even realize it, sometimes even feeling outrage for all of the wrong reasons.

Love this trilogy. I will say though, the shaky cam used in the filming of the fight scenes can be pretty annoying. It was the 2000's though, and boy did they love a shaky cam during that decade. When films finally stopped with the whole shaky cam nonsense, video games picked up on the trend. Thankfully that particular style has more or less gone extinct, or at least become endangered. Also some of the sound effects used for the fights scenes can be pretty goofy, but those are minor gripes and don't diminish what are 3 really outstanding action films.

Love this first movie and the subsequent movies too, but someone discovered the "shaky cam" for the second movie and it is really carpet bombed throughout the movie. I like it when it feels right, but it went way overboard on the second Bourne movie... It makes some of the scenes really hard to follow. Just an FYI warning, but please do watch all three. Good movies all of them.

What I like about Marie is that she's attractive, but in a "normal person" sort of way, rather than a "movie star" way. It gives her character some natural believability and approachability. I like Marie a lot, i think she's one of the best parts of the movie. She's easy to root for.
