Curious: would you ever try the mixed nude sauna?
By the way, I genuinely hope you enjoyed the style of the video.
Times change and I have been wanting to try more of this style of format for a while. I'm curious about why cultures do what they do, how our upbringing shapes who we are and how we relate to the world, be it nudity, gender roles, love language, how we view relationships, how we communicate... the list goes on. Excited to share these new findings with all of you. 😊
If you haven't yet signed on to my Podcast, please do so. Each Tuesday I chat to different cultures, diving deep into these topics.

I would not mind trying out a nude sauna just to get the experience. I haven't done the nude part at a beach although I have been to beaches where people go nude and women go nude or topless. I have done swimming naked alone in the pool though via bet that I won years ago if swimming naked in a pool counts although it was my friends and I only at the community pool. It doesn't bother me to see people naked, it's just about having an open mind in my opinion. I did enjoy the video Marina and continue with the good content. You go girl! ❤

I went to mixed sauna many moons ago with my ( then ) German fiancé. I am Indonesian btw.
The concept of mixed sauna was alien to me, I couldn’t comprehend what if you see your teacher / neighbour or someone you know naked in the sauna…
But now I’m ok with it, anyway when in Rome do like the romans do.

As a female from those conservative countries you mentioned I didn’t wear a top at the beach until I was 12 and had big boobs. Also we would see naked tourists all the time and they did their thing and we did ours. Live and let live! We also all changed on the benches in the swimming pool! I was still shocked when I went to Germany but still way more relaxed than USA Americans. If you don’t sexualize things it is not weird!
In East Germany where I studied the student apartments were mixed. My bathroom had a door that you could close but some were in the basement and they were mixed. As a woman the only people that whistle at us were Latin or Turkish. No northern men does that! Super respectfully! Love Germans and Austrians!

There is nothing sexual whatsoever about going to a FKK beach or a sauna. It’s more a feeling of liberty and people at these places are not gawking at each other. It's just a major cultural difference between Germany and North America. In the US and Canada, nudity is always sexual. While in Germany it is not. So when Americans or Canadians visit Germany, even though we understand this aspect of German society, it is difficult to suddenly change our mindset about nudity because we grew up having it ingrained into us that nudity is always sexual. So her mind automatically going to a place of "oh these men are looking at me sexually" would be totally normal and instinctual for a Canadian.

I'm British - there isn't much nudity here at all (not just because it's cold! Infact lots of Europe is actually colder than many parts of the UK for alot of the year) actually think it comes from prudish protestant beliefs (likely exported even more so to the americas with their even more extreme founding fathers etc.). Going on holiday in Europe as a teenager was a bit of a shock initially but actually think it's great, nudity and sexuality don't need to be conflated and it's a much more mature and natural way to view peoples bodies and less childish.
There's a stronger muslim/south Asian influence in the UK now which makes it much harder with lots of people very against nudity, again a relic of masoginy etc.
If you were to be naked in public you'd be arrested (indecent exposure)
Lots of germans do only speak german but there's nearly always someone around who speaks english.

Generally speaking it is advisable to sauna-bathe nude to avoid possible injury. Proper saunas have ,many health benefits. For one thing, a good sweat detoxifies, rejuvenates and invigorates. High sauna temperatures (for instance 80 degrees C) can promote sweating. To wear swimsuits at high temperatures is very uncomfortable and may scald the skin.

Some comments here don't pass the vibe check. I think nudity is something very beautiful. I absolutely love going to the sauna because it's so refreshing for body and mind. For me it is healthy in so many ways and so very relaxing. I feel more in tune and accepting of my own body, it's a peaceful thing. And yes, it is a form of freedom. I get that the first time visiting a sauna can be scary. But like everything else: the more often you do it, the easier it gets.
I have never had an uncomfortable situation in a sauna, people are polite and even more open and relaxed than they are on the streets. Which makes sense because everyone is somehow vulnerable and nobody can assume much about you because there are no possessions or clothes that could give you away. You just don't judge people because more than ever you realize how much the same we all are and and at the same time how beautifully different.

      1) Being Prude is not a bad thing, it is a good thing because privacy is a basic human right, while the opposite of that is degerancy, because it is full of ignorance and arrogance.
      2) Also when you mention: "the issue with sexualisation and over-sexualisation, don't forget that it is not as simple as just saying that, there are other complexities", (you're either doing it, you can't assume that if someone is thinking in a certain way, it either is or isn't). Which is all based on logic and common sense on human behaviours and actions, while someones political orientation, religion and philosophical, and scienctific views, does shape cultural beliefs and ideologies and how people percieve information. While understanding the full context, circumstances, nuances, whilst also knowing, boundaries, limitations, preferences and standards of everybody in a situation in real life is the key to understanding the principles.
      3) A culture filled with double standards and hypocrisy fuels degerancy.

I grew up in Munich going to what we call "family sauna", which means every gender and age group is welcome. For me nudity isn't linked to sex.
I have a friend from a very catholic, conservative family in Sardinia and she once visited and found the courage to come with me to the mixed sauna. Afterwards she said she had never felt less observed than there and she was used to be looked at all the time in her bathing suit at the beach growing up and had never expected to feel more comfortable naked in the sauna than in a bathing suit on the beach.

Some words about France, my country: there is 150 naturist resorts, and approx 200 official naturist beaches. We could thing it's good, and France is the number one naturist destination in the World. BUT being nude out those specific places is very difficult. If in Spain you can undress when you find a wild place, if in Germany you'll find a lot of "FKK" places (each lake will have its naturist beach, swimming pools have special pools or horaries for naturists; there is also naturist spaces in public gardens), if in Austria there are groups hiking nude, in France, if you are out of a naturist place, you can have serious problems, even in your own garden. And you have also a lot of people with origins in North Africa, who consider that if you are naked, or even topless, you are a whore and they'll yeld of you, film you, put their hands on you etc. And in some regions, where there is no sea, there is simply no naturist place. You have to take your car and travel 250 Km to find a place, where you can come only if you rent something for a week.
So, France, for naturist vacation, it's super, but just for an afternoon by a hot day, it's usually not possible unless you live at the coast.

I have done a lot of natural hot spring mixed nude bathing in the USA because there are two hot springs up the road from my home.
Both the men and the women are usually fully relaxed and in a state of peace. I often felt that both men and women were feeling a sense of healing by looking upon each other's nude bodies. Once a small charter school brought their students there. Only two of the students, a boy and a girl undressed and relaxed in the hot springs. They talked to this lovely older couple and were receiving sage advice. Anybody witnessing the two students would have noticed how the day was an incredible mental blessing for them. Which probably stayed with them for months.
I have never been to the actual nude beach that's about an hour away. But at the local Beach you will see topless women and nude swimming. The nature that is all around us seems to be a natural encouragement to swim the way nature intended us to.

After it initially feeling weird, I soon got used to it and felt very liberated by it. I ended up loving it and miss it very much since I haven't been in Germany in over five years, and there are very few opportunities for it in the USA (at least legally). I was fine with the mixed nude sauna and swimming. It takes the sexuality of nudity out of the equation. You learn to view other nude people as just people enjoying themselves like you are. I think that a decisive factor to label one's attitude in a naked sauna, is to what extent the person is tempted to look at the naked bodies of others around. I would say that the Germans attention is not directed toward that, but simply enjoy themselves during the time spent there. As the guy in your video said, he enjoys the sauna- nothing more nothing less than that.

The Flaucher is a section along the Isar near the zoo and is located on the edge of the southern city limits. In summer, people go there to sunbathe, swim, barbecue, cycle, play sports, etc. It is still completely within the city limits and is easy to reach by public transport. I recommend that every tourist visiting Munich in summer should definitely stop by. If you don't mind cold water, you should take a towel with you. There are several kiosks selling drinks, ice cream and small snacks and there is also a beer garden where you can eat. However, the prices are quite high, although this generally applies to beer gardens in Munich (in the surrounding area you can get roughly the same thing for half the price in total). And the beer-grate rule applies: you can bring your own food and eat it in the beer garden, but you have to buy drinks on site (except for small children, whose drinks you can bring with you). This is because beer gardens make most of their turnover with drinks and if you buy some, you also buy a fresh pretzel or an ice cream at the end anyway. If you bring your own food and drink or buy it in the supermarket where the subway and buses stop, the whole trip costs you nothing except the public transport ticket.

In your example, Marina, of the Spanish Netflix film in which you can witness an actual birth, which is after all how we all got here on this Earth, how many people who eat meat, poultry and fish, like me, are okay with knowing where it comes from, how it gets converted step by step from live animal into juicy burger or whatever, with no censorship of the steps in between?
And why does it seem that nudity is frowned upon but violence is acceptable in culture? Isn't that a little odd?

Generally speaking it's advisable to sauna-bathe nude to avoid possible injury.

    • @SigmaLegendus69
      @SigmaLegendus69 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well, I have something to add from actual research and fact-checking:
Based on the available scientific evidence, there are several points to consider regarding sauna use and clothing:
      ## Clothing in Saunas
Traditionally, saunas are used nude or with minimal clothing like a towel. This practice has both cultural and practical reasons:
**Heat Transfer:** Nude sauna use allows for more efficient heat transfer to the body and promotes sweating[1]. Clothing can act as an insulator, potentially interfering with the sauna's intended effects.
**Comfort:** High temperatures in saunas (typically 70-100°C) can make wearing clothing uncomfortable[1]. Wet clothing from sweat can stick to the skin and potentially cause discomfort or irritation.
      ## Chemical Concerns
The claim about dangerous chemicals being released from synthetic fibers in high temperatures is not well-supported by scientific evidence in the context of sauna use. While some synthetic materials can release chemicals when heated to very high temperatures, typical sauna temperatures are unlikely to cause significant chemical release from most clothing materials.
      ## Sweating and Detoxification
The idea that sweating in a sauna provides significant detoxification benefits is somewhat controversial. While sweating does eliminate some toxins, the liver and kidneys are the primary organs responsible for detoxification[2]. Sauna use may support these processes indirectly by promoting circulation and relaxation.
      ## Safety Considerations
**Hygiene:** Sitting directly on sauna benches can be unhygienic. Using a clean towel as a barrier is often recommended for public saunas.
**Skin Protection:** While nude sauna use is traditional, there's no strong evidence that wearing a swimsuit in a sauna is harmful to skin health, provided the suit is clean and comfortable.
**Hydration:** Regardless of clothing, proper hydration before, during, and after sauna use is crucial to avoid dehydration[1].
      ## Conclusion
While nude sauna use is traditional and may offer some benefits in terms of comfort and heat transfer, there's no strong scientific evidence that wearing clothing in a sauna is significantly harmful. The most important factors for safe and beneficial sauna use are proper hydration, moderate session length, and listening to your body's signals[1][2]. If using a public sauna, following the facility's guidelines for attire and hygiene is advisable.

      Additionally with regards to that:
When considering whether to use a sauna nude or with minimal clothing, such as a towel, there are cultural, practical, and personal preference factors to weigh. Here's a breakdown of the considerations:
      ## Nude Sauna Use
      ### Benefits
      - **Efficient Heat Transfer:** Nude sauna use allows for better heat transfer to the skin, promoting effective sweating and potentially enhancing the sauna's health benefits, such as improved skin and detoxification[2][4].
      - **Cultural Tradition:** In many cultures, particularly in Finland, using the sauna nude is traditional and seen as a natural part of the experience[2][4].
      - **Comfort:** Without clothing, there is no risk of fabric sticking to the skin or causing discomfort due to sweat accumulation[1][2].
      ### Considerations
      - **Hygiene:** It is important to use a towel to sit on to maintain hygiene and protect the sauna benches from sweat[2][4].
      - **Etiquette:** In public saunas, it is crucial to respect local customs and the comfort levels of others. Nudity might not be acceptable everywhere, so it's important to be aware of the specific sauna's rules and cultural norms[3][4].
      ## Minimal Clothing (Towel or Light Clothing)
      ### Benefits
      - **Modesty and Comfort:** For those uncomfortable with full nudity, wrapping a towel or wearing loose, breathable cotton clothing provides a balance between modesty and comfort[2][3][4].
      - **Hygiene:** A towel can serve as a hygienic barrier between the body and sauna surfaces[2][3].
      - **Cultural Sensitivity:** In places where nudity is not the norm, wearing a towel or minimal clothing can prevent awkwardness and respect cultural differences[1][3].
      ### Considerations
      - **Heat Insulation:** Clothing, especially if not breathable, can insulate the body and potentially reduce the effectiveness of sweating and heat exposure[1][5].
      - **Material Choice:** It's important to avoid synthetic materials, which can trap heat and moisture, leading to discomfort. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are recommended[3][5].
      ## Conclusion
The choice between using a sauna nude or with minimal clothing depends largely on personal comfort, cultural norms, and the specific sauna environment. Nude use is traditionally considered optimal for maximizing the sauna's benefits, but using a towel or light clothing can be a suitable alternative in public or mixed-gender settings. Always prioritize comfort, hygiene, and respect for others when deciding on sauna attire.

      And lastly.
When considering cultural norms around nudity in saunas versus clothing requirements, it's important to recognize that these practices exist on a spectrum influenced by various cultural, historical, and social factors. Here's an analysis of the situation:
      ## Cultural Context of Nude Saunas
In countries like Finland, Germany, and parts of Scandinavia, nude sauna use is a longstanding cultural tradition:
      - **Cultural Norm:** Nude sauna use is seen as natural, non-sexual, and tied to concepts of equality and body acceptance.
      - **Freedom and Privilege:** In these cultures, the ability to use saunas nude is indeed viewed as a freedom - a way to engage in a traditional practice without shame or restriction.
      ## Clothing Requirements in Saunas
In other cultures, particularly in North America and parts of Asia, clothing in saunas is often required or expected:
      - **Cultural Norm:** Modesty norms and different attitudes towards public nudity lead to expectations of wearing swimwear or towels in saunas.
      - **Perceived Right:** In these contexts, the ability to maintain bodily privacy in public spaces, including saunas, is often viewed as a right.
      ## Balancing Freedom and Rights
The tension between these practices highlights several important points:
      1. **Cultural Relativism:** What's considered a freedom in one culture may be seen as inappropriate or even offensive in another.
      2. **Personal Autonomy:** Both the freedom to be nude and the right to maintain privacy can be viewed as expressions of personal autonomy.
      3. **Public vs. Private Spaces:** The norms often differ between public facilities and private or members-only establishments.
      4. **Evolving Attitudes:** Cultural norms around nudity and body acceptance are not static and can change over time.
      ## Conclusion
While nude sauna use in some cultures represents a freedom and privilege rooted in tradition, the right to maintain bodily privacy in public spaces is equally valid in cultures where this is the norm. Neither practice is inherently superior; both reflect different cultural values and historical contexts.
The key is to respect local customs and norms while also recognizing that individuals may have personal preferences that differ from the prevailing culture. In practice, many establishments in culturally diverse areas offer options to accommodate different comfort levels, such as separate nude and clothed areas or specific times for nude use.

I have been to a mixed nude sauna. At one point I was renting an apartment from a Finnish couple in the U.P. of Michigan. They had a sauna on the property and would invite me to share it with them on a regular basis. It took a little getting used to at first. Having experienced nudist beaches and naturist camping in Europe and the US. I much prefer being around naturist Europeans. Much more fun and relaxed. I have found my fellow american nudist to be very conservative and somewhat uptight. To the point that I rarely go to nude beaches here in the US sadly.

If you don't want to see nudity (or let your family see nudity), DON'T GO THERE!!!! It is that simple. I don't understand what makes you fear it so much but just stay away if it affects you that much. Frankly, you have to learn shame about your body. Children are known to enjoy running around nude just as fast as they get a chance. In my opinion, the more taboo you make it, the more interest it gets. We all have a body, and it is natural and wholesome. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders. Because fashion and media only show their idealized versions, people feel inadequate and sometimes lose all self worth because they feel they don't or cannot emulate that standard. There are chihuahuas and St. Bernards and neither can become the other. Both are beautiful and belong just as they are.

I grew up in Eastern Germany in the 80‘s when it was very common to go swimming nude. We even showered all together in the students hostel because we had only one public shower for men and women. It was no big deal. We even chilled or learned together on the next lake naked. Nowadays it‘s not so popular anymore. There are still FKK beaches, but not so many as 20 or 30 years ago. Sauna culture is another thing. There are many big saunas where it is also not allowed to use the cabins with clothes and the saunas are more and more popular and very crowded at least in the wintertime. But generally speaken it‘s not about sexuality but because of the free body feeling. So it doesn‘t matter how your body looks like when you visit a nude beach. It‘s not what the others are interested in. Normally nobody will stare at you.

I think FKK the way they practiced in GDR was better than body positivity today . I noticed that East Germans seem to have a different attitude when it comes to sexuality. In short, healthier. Do you notice differences between people who grew up in GDR vs FDR? I watched Liebt der osten anders. Is body positivity a thing in Germany?

    • @gerdweist5961
      @gerdweist5961 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@g2000g Generally body positivity and sex positivity are different movements in Germany which are linked together perhaps, but are not completeley the same. So you have to distinct between them. Body positivity is more related to FKK and nudity. So you should not be ashamed of your body and all bodies have to be respected if they fulfill the classical criteria of beauty or not. So you will not be rated in any way if you are naked in the sauna or at the beach. This was much more widespread in the GDR. Nudity alone is not sexual . Sex positivity has it‘s roots in the sexual revolution of the 60‘s and it was also a form of protest against the authorities. There was an inofficial rule in the communities of this period: „Anyone who sleeps with the same person twice is already part of the establishment.“. This was a movement in Western Germany (68er). Nowadays there are no big differences between Eastern Germany and Western Germany regarding both movements I would say. Sex positivity also means equal rights for the LGBT.. community. But the most FKK beaches (body positivity) and also the the most well known clubs (sex positivity, Berghain, Kitkat) are in Eastern Germany or Berlin.

@@gerdweist5961 oh, in the US body positivity is like celebrating obesity unfortunately.
I want to ask you some questions if you don’t mind…since I dated a man who grew up in MV and another in NRW. Yes they were young when the reunification happened . I watched the documentary liebt der osten anders( it is on TH-cam ) and read articles about differences between the GDR and the FRG that persist to this day. It was quite interesting the guy who grew up in GDR did not adopt the attitude of West Germany and had the classic Approach of old GDR. Of course, I don’t want to generalize but West Germany is more puritanical and conflicted and I hear German sex therapists saying clients who grew up in the East are frank and open when talking about issues and and are not conscious of an external gaze of media or society about sexual fulfillment and performance. That was a good thing because the FRG was more like the USA when it comes to sex. I think the FRG should have learned from the GDR when it comes to sex. II know not all was good in the GDR. I live in the US but I grew up in a dictatorship which had censorship when I was a kid , and I know how it is very well.
Maybe you can watch that documentary and you see anything that resonates. I read an article on a survey a marketing firm did and there was a difference between new FRG states and original FRG states. Also scholars who interviewed many East Germans after the reunification noted that East Germans felt freer, more natural , and more sensual though West Germans talk more and had the Sexual Revolution. That was my experience compared with the East German BF compared to the man from NRW and American men. West Germans approach more like Americans …unfortunately.
I guess one’s attitude may vary depending on how old one was when the reunification took place. My friend from MV was 15 years old when the reunification took place. I don’t want to bore you w a long comment but you were a teen at least when two Germanies reunified? Anyhow liebt der osten anders was very interesting and I see what is wrong w how the west approaches sex nowadays has limits and flaws…. Thank you for reading a long reply!

When we were younger and our children were young, every Summer we spent 3-4 long weekends at a Nudist campground. Beautiful lake, wonderful people and a great place to relax. No tourists from buses with Cameras.
I think that could be the problem with German FKK areas, as crowds of people from bus tours that have no respect for a country’s nude culture, push their way into the peace and tranquility of an area of nude recreation, which in the long run, would certainly make a what was once a normal day at the nude beach or park, now a side show for tourists to gawk at. I completely understand how Germans may be moving away from public nudity in big cities, but may still enjoy the freedom of Nudity at private camps or resorts.
We have always enjoyed the nude experience at the nude spa in Baden-Baden. It is a wonderful place to relax.

Nudity is no shameful thing at all and if someone is used to be naked and others around him beeing naked, there even is no problem with sexuality.
In my younger days I lead mixed groups of something like scouts (in Germany its called "Bündische Jugend"). The main difference to scouting is, that we go on hikes for up to 4 weeks, mostly in the summer. The question, that me and my female co-leader had to answer was: How do we manage hygiene issues within a group of 13 to 15 year old girls and boys in the swedish outback? We can't go through the outback without holding some hygienic standards. We live in one tent, with a fireplace in the middle, we march together. So we shouldn't smell like smoked pumas, within our grup or when we get in touch civilisation for shopping etc. We decided to be role models. So at our first pause at a lake, after a hard and swaety trail, we took off our clothes completly and cooled down in the water. And surprise: The kids did the same and had real fun, splashing naked aorund in the lake. They all had swimming trunks or swinsuits in their backpacks, because these stood on the packing list, but noone pulled them out. In futue these only were used, when we got to public swimming areas. The morning routine always was done naked, swimming too and so on. Although these beeing teenagers in their puberty (some girls beeing optical complete females), I never saw somthing like staring or sexual arrousal, not even in the years to follow. One more fact. In the years after, some of them got in relationships with each other (some even married later) but sexuality or shame of beeing naked, never came up in the group. Beeing naked for hygienic issues was a necessity, going to swim naked had the advantage, that there is no wet swimwear in the backpack and so on. So nudity, even in public, not always is a selfpresentation with sexual background. Thes kids learned it and, being leaders of their own groups, passed it over to their group members. The whole organisation today has up to 100 participants in yearly camps and hikes. Meanwhile the generation of our own kids is leading the organisation. I'm still close to it and often with them and I never heard of some sexual assault or awkwardness in this "naked" community.
So beeing naked in public depends on education and your mindset.
To come the sauna theme: Sauna in Germany is an assexual place. Its inappropriate to stare or see something else in a naked body, than a naked body. A women can go into a sauna with only men in it and can be nearly sure, that noone will harm her. You come in, are short fact checked " OK, another woman" and that's it. Going home, on a dark sidewalk, fully clothed, might in some areas, even in Germany, be more dangerous for women, than going to a mixed sauna.
    Regards Th. Krapf

Asking "Do you go nude in the sauna" is like asking do you go naked if you take a shower. Could of course be that in other parts in the world people do wear clothing when they wash themselves but well.... Seems obvious for me ;-)
Watching a documentary about birth and see the actual birth is for me less of a trauma than seeing people getting killed or worse gruesome torture and mutilation and that is quite common nowadays on public channels and movies... Nakedness is a natural thing. Everybody is naked under their clothes. You are born naked. And shockingly for some cultures in my family we are used to walk in when other family members are showering. That's nothing to do with sexuality but just with a natural thing 🙂 But as the naked guy in the park said.. It is awkward if people are voyeuristic and stare at you or worse... make pictures and videos..

The era of Classical Antiquity of course had it's large nakedness and clothing optional normality. But post Renaissance, naturism thinking and ideas began mostly within the spheres of the wealthy and the intellectuals. During the 19th century, inspired by utopian naturalists and such, small nudist groups began to function but on very small scale, but nevertheless persisted and grew in their popularity and numbers into the 20th century in Germany. Due to the naturism and nudist movements in Europe having ideological origins with philosophical naturalism, utopianism etc. there is likely similar movements in other European countries at the time too. But for whatever reason, the German history of (modern European) nudism, naturism, nature worship etc., is most documented and referenced.

Sincerely I never understood what is the problem of people with nudity, for me it felt always so natural that i never thought about it. The reason I think why it is falling down in general is because other people just go to nudist places to watch the naked people, staring at them in an uncomfortable way and they are not even nude, so as the guy from the video said, it is not nice you being naked and relaxing and suddenly having people taking pictures or videos of you without your permission and on top of that those people are not even nude, it feels unrespectful, so that is why i think it is happening. So all those who enjoy nudity and body freedom move to other more private gatherings where there are people alike and anyone can enjoy watching each other with respect.

Back then when I understood that I was aiming at "women hour" to go train, now being a full naturist I got accustomed to be naked around a bunch of naked men cuz in Quebec naturist is like 75-80% men.
As for what we see on a nude beach is not that is only the bodies you don't wanna see that you see but rather all bodies including those you don't wanna see (although since it's a generation think you might see more boomers and X than millennial and zoomer...but the latter are there too...sometime).
