The dynamics you’re talking about here are the same forces at work when moving INTO an eddy, but in reverse. When entering an eddy you need to edge upstream. Planting a paddle just like you described is also helpful and can give a nice “power slide” feel when you cross the eddy line.

Exactly. But you're not really edging "upstream" when doing an eddy turn -- because the current inside the eddy is going in the opposite direction. (I'm always amused watching the olympic WW slaloms when the commentators talk about paddlers making those "difficult upstream maneuvers".)

Dynamics of eddies are really well explained. For a really dynamic peel out, plant a high brace as you're crossing the eddy line and the boat is starting to spin. The high brace provides support, but also grabs the downstream current so it spins the boat faster, but still surprisingly stable. This is a fun maneuver, but can also be critical to spin faster if you're peeling out into a narrow channel with hazards on the far side.

Why is James in an NDK? Was a P&H paddler a while back. Better boats or more money?

Both companies produce great boats but we were keen to work with just one companies boats for our course videos and chose to go with SKUK.
