      i think Sampis was the most clean, but for me, Burtons was the best..3 deep, never took his eyes of it, clean grab. Abletts was definitely a mark, but not a clean grab. Raffle Modras, he had too many..freak. Morcroft was good, but I rate a pack mark higher.

      Chris Tarrant vs Melbourne was my favourite (I’m biased), but like you said, he was like 7 guys deep and just rose above the pack. I think that one looks the best.
      For sheer courage, the Nick Riewoldt and Jonathan Brown marks running with the flight of the ball are also two of my favourites.
      Number 1 I think was almost included as default. This was officially awarded “mark of the century” for 1901-2000. Obviously a very good mark, but there’s plenty that wouldn’t have been captured on film prior to that.

    My absolute favourite memory of school was every lunchtime playing kick to kick. Two groups of about 10-15 kids per group, kicking the ball back and forth trying to take species. so much fun, so much pain. :)

      You Don't see that happen any more at schools..
      The Old balls were not water proof in those days and they got water logged and when you kicked it in the wet and cold bare footed ( as we all were in those days ) it felt like you were kicking a brick.The stinging pain was terrible , but it didn't stop us trying to take a Specky and kick it again ...lol

    Regarding your question as to whether Number 3 was a mark, the umpires in AFL (unfairly) tend to give more leeway to star players (Which ablett was). The rules state that you have to have control of the ball for a mark to be paid, Ablett never had control of the ball so it should not have been paid.

    • @NepDaStep
      @NepDaStep  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh I see. American sports do that stuff all the time with star players man it’s b.s.

    • @WaDarkPhoenix
      @WaDarkPhoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, unfortunately it happens a lot in AFL, and the media all make their money off the AFL so they don't like to call it out. Star players will be given much more time to dispose of the ball when tackled, marks paid when not completed, not called for illegal disposal and in the last couple of years they've been increasingly protected at the Match Review Panel (system for punishing/suspending players).
      A few times star players have been given fines for clearly suspension worthy actions which has left them still eligible for AFLs biggest solo award the Brownlow (Best and Fairest).

    • @shmick6079
      @shmick6079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be fair he controlled it briefly - but as Tony Shaw was arguing, not for long enough. The ball bounced off his chest when he hit the ground.
      I think it’s like Jack Higgins’ goal (throw) that was paid purely for theatrics.

    • @WaDarkPhoenix
      @WaDarkPhoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly, he never really had the ball "under his control" he just had a hand on it. But they paid it for the look.

    • @BayleyBlake
      @BayleyBlake 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I recon Jack Higgins' was a goal... It would have been a throw if he hadn't have kicked it thus making it correct disposal and part of his ball drop. I don't give a shit about Richmond either! Haha.

    G'day young fella, I suppose as an Aussie we love our footy and everybody has their favourite team and favourite mark. The appeal of seeing these videos being watched in the US is the reaction from you guys, it's absolutely priceless.
    Aussie Rules is the true Australian game and, in just so many ways, it reflects the true Aussie character and spirit. We're good, hardworking people who practically idolise genuine athleticism, fiercely defend our team but remain loyal to our friends and family. That's the Aussie character, oh and we're not whimps.
    Furthermore, just as many women go to the footy as men. Australians are justifiably proud of their game and with good reason.

    The reason #1 topped this list is it was rated as Mark of the Century in 1996. Smith took the mark in 1995 so it was fresh in everyone’s memory and it was also called the highest mark anyone had ever taken until fairly recently (his head is estimated to have been around 3.5 m/11.5 feet off the ground). IMO though the marks with the longest hang time are the most impressive, particularly Jeremy Howe at #43 and 35 , Warrick Capper at #27 and Matthew Lappin at #16 (and also Brendan Goddard at #30 because of the circumstances)

  • @dcav
    @dcav 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    What's even more impressive is, they cannot use their hands for balance (although sometimes they get away with it). As soon as they use their hands it's deemed "push in the back" (or hands in the back these days...they've made the rule stricter) and a free kick is awarded to the opposition.

    Really really enjoying these reaction vids. I have loved AFL all my life, but seeing how you see it with a totally fresh view, has given me a new pride in my own sport, haha! Love your appreciation!. Thank you so much!
    Jonathan Brown's mark (13:18 on your vid) and Nick Reiwoldt's mark (17:12) are widely regarded as the two most courageous marks ever. On the second mark, you can hear the commentator refer to the 'Jonathan Brown mark 2 seasons earlier'.
    Which is the actual 'greatest' mark is much more subjective, of course, and there are many opinions on it. My personal favorite is not even in this list! :)

    The "perfect sit" occurs when you land your knees on a guys shoulders (can be on the same team - Jeff Farmer mark) just as he leaps for the ball. It actually propels you upward just as you reach the zenith of your own leap. Only happened to me once while playing Footy and it was sweeeeeeet. The Ashley Sampi mark perfectly illustrates that.

    Point of clarification for you: a mark is a catch that you are awarded a free kick for. It can only be called a mark if it is caught on the full and off a player’s kick that has travelled at least 15 metres without bouncing or being touched.
    If you catch a ball from a hand pass, or a short kick (less than 15m) or one that’s bounced off a hand or body etc, that’s just a catch, not a mark, and is play on.

    The term 'mark' comes from the early days of the game (late 1800's). Then, the players wore a 'college' cap, a flat type cap, to match their outfits. When they took a catch, as is the case now, they were awarded a free kick. They would then take off their cap and put it on the spot where they took the catch, to 'mark' the spot. That has simply morphed into calling a catch, a mark. I hope this helps.

    Had a quick look through the comments & didn't see anyone mention this (I don't think), but the oldest surviving footage of Aussie Rules Football is from 1909. The first league for Aussie Rules were formed in 1877, but the first team competitions started in 1858. The sport has evolved and developed a fair bit from those early days.

  • @y0Combo

    The Greatest Ever - Gary Moorcroft #2.
    My Favourite Ever - Jonathan Brown #17 closely followed by Nick Riewoldt #6
    Also Alex Jesaulenko #28 is probably the most iconic. along with its commentary.
    The problem with this and the goals videos is the context of why its so good, e.g. Close games, Bravery, Grand finals, Clutch moments etc. and it doesnt quite give you the full reasoning. You might be confused at why some great LOOKING marks arent higher rated than others, which where the context wouldve helped.

    As a football player who has done a few of these before, a large part of doing a mark like this is your opponent being in the right position, just jump and place your knee on their shoulder, alot of times their momentum pushes you further up. keep your eye on the ball wich will help your shoulders keep balanced and the rest is as simple as following the ball all the way to your hands. It is probably on par with the difficulty of a regular catch as those have more contact and stronger defensive presence.

      Are you a footy player or American football player bro?

    • @bucky3725

      I played Australian football all my childhood into young adulthood.
      Most people start around 4-5 years old and some play into their 40's. I started around 5 and played until my 20's.
      But yeah those marks aren't extremely difficult. You would be surprised if you find a friend with pads to practise and is strong enough to at least not fold in half when you try, you can get around 2.5 - 4 seconds of hang time on their shoulders easily.
      In a game is different because they obviously don't want you on their shoulders and with moving around and game pressure it can be much harder but when it happens you will feel it, when you jump and feel contact with your knee you will suddenly feel a lifting almost weightless feeling and that is the opponents upwards momentum pushing you up. Its one smooth and almost effortless motion when its done properly.

      To add to Jeremy Howe he should have gotten the Mark of the Year for 2017 but it was down to a fan vote. Even the look of the guy who won knew he shouldn't have gotten it just by looking at his reaction when he won.
      Not to mention that he took an identical one earlier in the year which honestly should have been in the top 3 also for 2017. But his main one would be top 10 in this list just by how good it was. And honestly both should have.

    Just a technical point - a "mark" is catching the ball and maintaining control of it to the umpire's satisfaction, but the ball has to be KICKED to you. Receiving a handpass is not a "mark" and you must play on immediately and get rid of the ball before being tackled. If you "mark" the ball the umpire will blow the whistle to indicate it is a mark, and you are then given a short period of time to either handpass, kick to a team mate, kick for goal, or run off the "mark" if you are not "manned up" (an opposition player is not close by).

    When we are little kids we are told constantly ‘go in hard with eyes only for the ball, and you will be fine’. The idea is that the player with mental hesitation is more like to be in a poor position, possibly tense and be hurt more when he gets hit. That’s why the pros go forward with no thought to getting hit.

    There are a few rules about jumping on players and marking it.
    You cant use your hands to climb over someone. "Sometimes they get away with it".
    If you jump on someone and it is deemed an unrealistic attempt to mark it, the umpire will penalize you and give the ball to the opposition.

    The footsteps give away where your opponent is approaching from. The are 18 players to each side on the field at once and only 4 on interchange/bench...

  • @arconeagain
    @arconeagain 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's difficult to judge marks like this, there are a bunch of variables, including what looks spectacular of coarse, hence why you may see us describe it as a 'specky'. There is also the 'hanger', these are the ones where the player seems to hold and balance there body for a seemingly long amount of time above their opponent/s. Tony Modra is a great example of this natural ability. In regard to the number one Shaun Smith, at the time this was one of the greatest marks taken on film in the modern era, in my opinion. Look at the overall height of the mark, he clearly has his feet on the guy's shoulders at full extension, although he doesn't take it above his head, fair enough.The camera flash helped too. You will see a lot of these marks where they don't catch it above their head because they don't necessarily expect to get up that high and therfore go under the flight of the ball. Hope this helps. Jeremy.
    And by the way I barrack for Richmond so I am not biased according to the team you support. No sign of Matthew Richardson in this sequence though. Enjoy the rest of the 2018 season.

    A mark is when you catch the ball on the full and when you mark off of someone else’s back or shoulders it’s called a speckie (comes from spectacular btw)

    #1 is definitely the greatest mark of all time bc if you split it from the rest and compare them the other 49 were only able to leap and jump only as far as getting their knees on their opponents shoulders, #1 is the only player EVER to actually stand on his opponents shoulders if you look really closely. Altho in my eyes #2 is by far my favourite

    Honestly, for my money, Riewoldt's mark was the most impressive. The height the other marks get is impressive, but Riewoldt was running full out, eyes on the ball and not looking where he was going and took it horizontally. That's so dangerous and shows complete commitment.

  • @Anarchsis
    @Anarchsis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason it’s called a mark is because in the early days of the game, the player would catch the ball and because he had to take his kick where he caught it the umpire would run in and point to the spot the player took the catch and say’ here’s your mark’ indicating where the player can kick from.

    A Mark is call this Because 140 years ago when the game started a player would catch the ball and immediately mark the spot he caught the ball with his cap to indicate the spot in which the opposition player can not go over ( man on the mark) while the (catcher ) goes back for his kick...That is why it is called a Mark.....Yes once you Mark the ball and the umpire blows his whistle to indicate u have taken the Mark u can either go back for a set kick or u can play on quickly .
