What a great video. I'm a Canadian and hardcore hockey fan. When I spent a year in Australia for school, AFL easily became my favourite sport while I was there. I didn't care for the two rugby leagues. I didn't care for cricket. I couldn't believe how seriously they took amateur swimming.... but the AFL, man, now that was exciting! I still wake up at 430am here in Canada to see important AFL playoff games.
wasn't a taunt at soccor players athleticism. Afl fields are twice the size and theres no offsides. You just need to be more athletic to accomdate for that.
Also If you look at the numbers, Afl players are larger and stronger than soccer players, afl is a more physical game requiring more energy, plus the elite players in the afl are running in between 13-15 kilometres per game as opposed to 11 by soccer players. Despite AFL longer game time the numbers back up the afl here.
MIGHTY FIGHTING HAWKS FAN HERE SINCE 75' & Happy to say that Warrick Capper's specky over Chris Langford is probably still the most amazing grab in AFL/VFL history. I've met Capper a couple of times through the years & he's a big unit & yep.. an even bigger flog! However that mark was something amazing.
Rad Radish . As a mad Swans fan I salute you my friend for having the decency to admit that about Capper’s Mark, it certainly was unbelievable a journalist said Capper made time standstill on his shoulders. I met a one eyed Hawks fan without your intelligence who claimed that the mark should’ve been paid in the back. I eventually convinced him that if that was the case then every speccy could be deemed in the back. I met him too, in a bank. I said Warwick you should never have left the Swans and gone to Brisbane. He said, “Yeah I know but the million dollars was good.” Plenty of players can take fantastic marks, but in my opinion he was the best, “Acrobatic mark” of all time. He’s a professional flog, he makes a living out of it. I remember when he teased Sam Newman with his coffee caravan he called Cappercino. Merry Christmas mate.
Believe me Adam when I set they are the fittest athletes on the planet. Most players run 12-14km per game. And midfielders regularly get to 16km. They're literally muscly running machines. They're supremely fit and when you stand next them, they're monsters!! Enjoy our great game
Not to mention the wider range of skills needed compared to other sports, fewer players on the bench and the contact nature of the sport. Also a lot of sports scientists agreeing on footy players being fucking fit. Whenever a sports star from basketball/soccer/nfl/etc comes over to try AFL they inevitably mention that it is the hardest sport they have tried.
Cox is nowhere near a star. he had one good game. We have had a few irishmen come in, but none have been outright stars, so im not too sure who you're talking about. Its not about which sports stars are better, so don't be so defensive. Its about which sports require the widest range of skills. Ive got nothing against other sports. I love other sports, and all atheletes do shit I could never do, but to not give props to the effort required to be good at footy is silly. and again, this is the viewpoint of a large portion of the worlds leading medicos, trainers, sports scientists. Im more likely to trust the people that test this shit, than some angry youtube commentor with an axe to grind because they felt their precious heroes were challenged.
@S, Lianis nah you're right. I made it all up. I fabricated these scenarios where medicos/etc have gone from soccer/gridiron/basketball into AFL or vice versa. I'm just a scared little man, who when my life (afl) is threatened, feels the need to pull anything out of my arse to justify its existence. I was also absolutely, 100% trashing on any other sport. I was implying that any athlete playing anything other than AFL is a useless sports player. Because I'm so ashamed of AFL. Or fumbleball rather. I'm so jealous of other sports. I am so insecure in myself. Please go easy. I'm fragile.
@S, Lianis I thought you said no AFL player had ever made the switch to another code numbskull , but you obviosly googled two for yourself to prove that you don't know what your talking about , so I guess that makes three AFL players playing other codes , who's the moron now dipshit. Have a nice day.
@S, Lianis, except you who seem to have taken the time and effort to watch and comment on a video that you supposedly dislike. I think deep down you are threatened by its popularity.
@S, Lianis Nice attempt at trolling, why waste your time. What are the 2 country towns you speak of? I could say the same for NRL if I want to be a trolling prick, 1 city and 2 country towns. I would argue that north of Vic border popularity is far closer than you think, most NRL fans are part time fans mate otherwise NRL crowds would be bigger than they are on average as well as club memberships. As it stands AFL team Sydney Swans has a far greater membership than any NRL team, even GWS Giants (9 year old team) has more memberships than every NRL team bar one (Brisbane Broncos) NRL (entire league) average crowd 2019 = 15030, AFL ave crowd in NSW 2019 = 23014, AFL Sydney Swans home game ave = 30070 AFL (entire league) average crowd 2019 = 35122. EDIT- Even AFL in QLD had 19385 average crowd, over 4k more than NRL and Gold Coast finished bottom of ladder. AFL = fumble ball?? turn it up mate, you realise an NRL ball has more grip, plus Rugby League or Union are NOT a 360 degree game with no offside, in other words if they were they would most likely fumble alot more than AFL players.
S, Lianis the vid says that AFL has the 4th highest Average attendance of any domestic sports league in the WORLD. That’s pretty good for a sport only played by “one city and 2 country towns”. U don’t have to like AFL and you’re entitled to you’re opinion but u don’t have to be an arse about it. There are lots of people even outside of Australia that love AFL I would know as I have many friends and relatives from other countries who love the sport.
@@unsociablemutt2303 Yep, just over 35k average for AFL making it fourth (before Gold Coast and GWS joined, AFL was third), English Premier League is third at 38.5k average, German Bundesliga Soccer League is 2nd at 43.5k, the NFL kills them all at 67k average crowd.
Footballers have to run about 15 Km a game. The games are divided into 4 qtrs of 25-30min. Put on together the running, kicking, bumping and tackling and you're pretty buggered and sore after it.
@Steff left you sound jealous, go and watch a game and see the skill AFL players have got, it was also invented for cricket players in their off season in 1858. Not having a dig at soccer.
@Steff left hahahahaha you wouldnt have clue, your mind is closed, No one has heard of it outside of Australia but now that they have they are falling in love with it, how can you not its exciting, our ovals are nearly twice the size of soccer fields, so they have to have more fitness than soccer players.
To put the field size it into perspective. The MCG the home of Professional Football in Australia, required only minimal adjustment to fit the running track when Melbourne hosted the Olympics in 1956.
I’m from Texas been an AFL fan for about 15 yrs, I wish I would’ve found it soon. It’s my favorite sport! I’m a Hawthorne Hawks fan! I know I’m going to catch a little for that
Yeah some others have given me crap for it. What’s funny I didn’t even know about all the GFs when I started watching the AFL, a buddy told me instead of watching ever game pick a team and try to watch their matches. I picked them because I liked their style of play they were exciting and sure enough in a year I had my 15 yr old daughter hooked and was obsessed with the game.
Good onya, mate... You should support your USAFL as well.. From what I understand a Texas-based team (Austin Crows if I remember correctly) is quite successful.
One major difference: When you are tackled, you DON'T want to fumble the ball in American Football. In AFL, you MUST fumble and release the ball, except when catching the kicks.
Brock Mak if the player has prior opportunity to dispose of the ball correctly (handball, kick) and it’s tackled a fumble will definitely be called holding the ball however without prior opportunity the ball is often fumbled out of a tackle as no player has gained real control of the ball
AFL players are the best all round athletes of any major sport. They may not be the outright fastest or strongest in some areas of fitness, but they have to be good at everything - speed, endurance, strength, power, agility, coordination, balance, and flexibility.
Adam, so picture this, players are running full speed all over that huge ground for 120 minutes. Plus they're crashing into each other taking those spectacular marks and all that is why the man said they have more stamina than a soccer player. He wasn't teasing you, he was absolutely correct. These players are running flat out for up to 18 km per game. Players judge the distance before bouncing, and so they don't go further than it, they usually bounce it before running 16 yards. The umpire is also a good judge of the distance, and will pay a free kick to the opposition if they run too far.
You should react to top 50 afl marks of all time. A mark is a catch in afl the the best marks are ‘speckys’ as they are known as where you jump onto other players to mark the ball
The greatest mark of all by Alex Jesulenko in the 1970 semi final against Collingwood isn't on that list. But the worst mark of all time by Gary Moorcroft is.
The good thing about AFL as not with soccer is it has a draft system. It seems football(soccer) is now rules by who can pay the most in players. It is predictable who is going to be at the top of the league.
@S, Lianis the point went flying over your head there mate Yes, Leicester winning the league was amazing, and no one saw it coming, but it's just not happening again, think, whose one the league since then, Chelsea, City, City, who will win this season, either City or Liverpool, who won the 5 seasons leading up to Leicester? United, City, United, City, Chelsea Always the team with the most money And to top it off, Leicester was the first team that's not one of the "big 6" to finish top 4 since Everton in 2005 So I think you'll find it is predictable
@S, Lianis you ever seen a map of Australia mate? Cos NRL is only popular in QLD and NSW. North East... The North west and Northern territory happen to follow AFL sooo not just the southern states. In fact NT, WA, SA, VIC, ACT and TAS are all AFL States/territories. That's 6 to 2 in favour of AUSTRLIAN football. So take ya league and go back to England ya pommy bastard hahaha p.s I live in QLD and actually follow the Broncos so just takin the piss
@S, Lianis hahaha you seem to like saying tight shorts and netball singlets... Seems a bit suspect mate... I think you've got a secret, you can tell us how you really feel, no judgement... P.s AFL is played all over the world, however as global economics stand no investors in their right mind would fund the creation of a professional league, given how shit everyone is at the sport lol it's easy for soccer, rugby etc they're already established... You can set up a league and import players from anywhere in the world much like they've done here with a-league and in the states with MLS, however we don't have the population to be exporting athletes to other countries to help improve play and exponentially grow the game... It's common sense man
S, Lianis A simple google search should do the trick... I wanna get serious for a moment (no bullshit) I want your perspective on something... I'm going to assume you consider yourself Australian (if not than that's fine) but answer honestly, why would you hate something that was created by Australians for Australians? I know a lot of people from QLD and NSW have been conditioned since birth to hate on the sport, but it is just so strange to me. It's clearly no threat to league or union and is a completely different game so what's the harm in supporting both?
@S, Lianis yeah, I know it goes both ways... I grew up in W.A and therefore never saw a league game in my life until I moved to QLD after school. League was just not talked about at all given we didn't have a team etc... But once I moved here I was bewildered with the amount of hate AFL gets. I've been here a while now and have come to enjoy League as I'm open-minded and find most sports entertaining once I learn the rules and objective etc (NFL and NBA mostly). Just wanted to get your perspective being on the opposing side.
@S, Lianis looks like a legitimate account to me. Insecure NRL fans start having mental breakdowns when they find out that the AFL is actually finding popularity overseas
Think of it like Gaelic football meets basketball on a cricket field. It’s Australia’s original sport. Grand final is usually a 100 000 people turnout, and that’s only in the stadium. It’s an incredible spectacle. Parades everything.
I afl, you only don’t get up, if you can’t, it is an unwritten rule! If you break and arm and stay down, you are a wimp, so get up and walk off, but if you get knocked out cold till the ambo you are only recognised if you go for the ball, if not, you are dropped for when you get back. That! Is south Australian under 13 football
There is now an offside like rule. What happens is at the start of each centre bounce (after a goal is scored or start of a quarter), there must be 6 players in each say third of the ground (6 in forward 50, 6 in defensive 50 and 6 in between those 50 arcs).
Everyone talks about rugby as an origin. But actually it was invented by ex pat Irishmen adapted form Gaelic Football. The bouncing, running and scoring included some elements of rugby. The game was invented in the 1850s but rugby league and union as well as soccer and hockey were also played.
The “AFL’s biggest hits” etc type videos aren’t really what footy is about. You want big brutes smashing each other watch some rugby league (or UFC lol). The highlights in footy are more about the skill, athleticism and courage involved in the game. Some of the goals and marks and sensational and you won’t see anything as spectacular in the other football codes. Check out some of the “best marks/goals” videos and you’ll see what I mean.
Ah your one of those people that like how the game has been ruined , the bump and hard hit WAS part of football , made the game something special , now it's just a scrappy mess with umpires blowing a whistle every 30 sec and players , spectators and commentators have no idea why but that's cool each to their own
5:50 blew the whistle because there was a mark (catch). Paid when the ball travels 15 metres off a kick. If the whistle blows you can stop and look for an option but he chose to play on
Been watching hockey my whole life but these guys are nuts lol I'm going to have to watch a full match to see how the flow of the game is. Hockey is fairly non stop action and wondering if this is similar
TwoInchrPinchr . I have a feeling you would love it to bits my friend. It is definitely non-stop action with players crashing into each other evading each other, bouncing, kicking and so forth. It will have you on Edge for two hours minus two 10 minute, and one 20 minute break. And just a heads up, it is illegal in Australia to follow any other AFL team except the Sydney Swans. I made such a law.
You saw the size of the field my friend. That’s why they mention fitness up against the soccer players. These guys run anything up to 18 km in a game, and the operative word is run. A different more energy sapping constant type of moving which is different to the way the soccer players move around. On top of this, almost an extra half an hour of playing time makes a huge difference in terms of the fitness needed.
A mark is where a player cleanly catches a kicked ball that has travelled more than 15 metres without any other player touching it (prior to the player marking the ball) or the ball hitting the ground. Taking a mark off the back of a player is called a "Speccy".
@S, Lianis does it bother us if we haven't told the rest of the world about our sport? Not a bit, we're happy to be No. 1 in the greatest country of them all
Yep, AFL players run an average of about 15kms a game compared to Soccer players that run average of approximately 10kms a game, also the tackling in Aussie Rules is far more intense, also more high speed sprints in AFL games too.
@@AdamCouser nah, man. If you watch a game, those 36 players run everywhere on the field. In soccer, they have pretty defined boundaries where they go to. Watch a match or highlights and you'll understand. This video gives you insight into the game's rules but doesn't actually show you how challenging the game really is.
Aussie Rules was first played back in 1858, with rules being regulated in 1870. The first established competition was in South Australia(SAFA) on 30 April 1877, followed shortly after by Victoria(VFA); all other states and territories had competitions by the early 1900's.
Well I learned something new. I thought this was rugby anytime I would see it. I think I like this one better. Thanks for teaching this American something :D
Dylan De La Pena . Here’s a guarantee. Come to Australia get in amongst the crowd at a big game, and you will become just as crazy about it as us Australians. And believe me that’s crazy.
The four football codes in Australia (AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer) used to have competitions to rate the players of each. AFL players dominated in speed, stamina, and all-round athletic ability. Some players today cover around 20 km in a single two hour game.
Yes, definitely do some more AFL reactions. I love that sport! (Or some Australian's might be insulted in that. Sorry, your religion) Have a look at the grand final highlights of any year (just not this year...it was shocking).
Lol, we love foreigners who love Aussie rules! And the Grand Final this year was not at all shocking. The Tigers paid in blood, sweat, and tears to become such a team. We were not about to be run over again like Collingwood did to us in '18. Also, the Giants probably did as well as Collingwood would have had they won the week before. Bear in mind that Richmond had to fight an equally gruelling Prelim against Geelong. Richmond just displayed relentless pressure through the Finals and no one could stand up to it.
Just so u know Adam ....Our Sport AFL ....Started in the 1850's or there abouts ......But started as VFA ....Then changed to VFL ....Then changed to AFL ☺☺😉
@Steff left Well for ur information IDIOT!! The guy Adam in this reaction video Gives a shit because he is learning about our AFL game!! So what does that tell UUUUUUUU SUNSHINE!!! 🤦♀️😤😡
Not sure about the fitness thing, but the team I support does a training drill called the "hundred hundreds" It's one hundred 100 metre sprints followed by a 4 kilometre time trial. Cheers from Oz. Glenn
@Abbott IsGone consistently AFL players reach 16-20 ks a game, soccer players only ever get up to about 11, 9-10 being the average. If you add the strain of being tackled, tackling, getting bumped, jumping and all other physical aspects of the sport, I think its fair to say they are much fitter. Its not a competition, but they quite literally are the fittest athletes in the world.
I just came across your Chanel and would just like to say great job! Your videos are very entertaining! I have subscribed and would love to see another afl video. Possibly reviewing the teams individually and choosing one for yourself even!

How does an Irishman not know this game? We used play each a lot
2:35 an AFL field is about 180m long and 75m wide (ish) some are slightly shorter but wider but don't waver much more than 10mx10m (5 at each end and widest point)
The black guy who jumps over the pack & marks the ball, Natanui (NicNat) is 6ft 7 or 2 metres tall. That's the average height of a small ruckman, Cox of Collingwood is 6ft 11. If you think about the game as full-contact basketball with kicking it makes more sense. The ruckmen are like the main jump person in basketball, tapping the ball to a smaller player (rover perhaps), when the ball has been thrown up (or bounced) by the ump as it is in basketball.
It really annoyed me when they were measuring distance in yards, cause we bounce every 15m or 15 steps. And also... playoffs... nah Matt they're finals, that physically hurt to hear
Well, the video was made for us Philistines here in non-metric-land. :) Although I didn't actually know the rule was every 15m for a bounce, I figured it was just "every so often". I assume nobody can exactly keep track if somebody ran 15.5m without bouncing. And the thing that gets me about the best AFLers isn't even their sheer fitness, although that' mindblowingly impressive. It's the ability for some of those guys to hit a dead-accurate kick 50 meters on a dead run. From a mark is amazing enough. But at a full sprint while somebody is one step behind you and somebody else is getting ready to knock you into the sixth row? I can't even comprehend it.
Barack Obama . You are quite correct Mr Obama. Back in 1896, Cricket players decided they needed a sport to keep fit during the off season. They concocted a game by taking a few things from different sports. They certainly would have kept rather fit, considering the distance from one goal to the other, WAS ONE MILE.
The ground is nearly 200m long and 200m wide. The game goes for about 120 minutes. Midfielders have been measured as running 25km in a game. Soccer midfielders run 10-12km in a game. We have some gr8 Irish players who have converted from Gaelic to Aussie Rules, look em up - ZacThoohey, Tadhg Kennelly, Jim Stynes (was an absolute legend) and many more..
The stamina part is true but that's during the game. Some midfielders have been known to run nearly 30kms during a single game. The players go through an intense recovery as they prepare for the next week's game. The season is only 22 weeks with finals added at the end. It's always been a tough sport. Check out some highlights from the 70s & 80s - back when all players had a day job!
@@shmick6079 it's not about the game maybe he would like to see the grand final his only just started watching football And has never seen a grand final
@@shmick6079 He would like to see the game you weirdo I can request whatever iwant and he doesn't care he's just learning AFL I reckon he would like to see it because he would prefer to have 2019 then other years and he would like to see what happened
If you kick between the too outer posts it's a point-1 point If you kick between the too in side posts it's a Goal-6 points If you kick the post it is a point and is called a behind-1 point
Hay mate an afl fan here.. its funny to see people react to our game.. but the video didnt mention that most midfielders will run up to 16km a game and most of it is at high speed, they say they afl players are up there with the most fittest athletes in the world .
Greetings Adam from another Aussie. Thanks for your interest in Australian Football. The video you are watching is all about hyping the game up. It's not incorrect but I would suggest watching a whole match to get a sense for the feel and rhythms of the game (the exciting bits as well as the humdrum...). I would also add a few extra points. Australian Football is one of the oldest codes of football in the world first being played in the late 1850s. The rules were codified before soccer. The field is large because the game was originally played on cricket fields. Although in recent years ground sizes have become standardized but there are still differences. AFL actually stands for Australian Football League but since the 1990s the acronym has become a noun. Footy is the preferred term in Australia. However, it is not the only footy. In New South Wales and Queensland Rugby League is extremely popular. So Australia manages to maintain not one but two gladiatorial football codes. I live in Canberra which is in the area where the traditional boundary line between the two footy codes collide ('The Barrassi Line, named after a famous ex-player who coined the term). AFL is more popular to the south of the line and Rugby League more popular to the north. Regarding the 7 foot player, he was a rarity. However, professional players are extremely fit and well drilled. In my view AFL players are fitter than soccer players as they have to run further while absorbing more tackles/bumps. And kicking a football 50 metres is no mean feat. I have seen a few soccer games live (including Australia playing). In my view the best AFL game is far more engrossing than a soccer equivalent, in part due to the scoring system which adds an extra layer of uncertainty (there is always scope for the team behind to make a comeback). The shape of the ball and hence potential uneven bounce is another factor. All in all, we in Australia are extremely lucky to have this sport. It is an important part of our national identity. Although the AFL administration tries hard to promote the game outside Australia (e.g. the breathless hyped up video you watched) it is unlikely to be played widely outside Australia. But that's not a problem in my view. In a globalised world, Australia is proud to have a game which is truly its own and has not been imported from England.
The soccer player endurance factor has been proven due to the length of the game. He'll say the quarters are 20mins each with overtime but most quarters are over 25 & many go to 32 or more. The game in most cases is 2hrs long.
The longest recorded kick in Aussie rules is 3 mile. This is according to a crazy commentator we had named Lou Richards who said the ball was kicked out of the stadium landed on one of our trams, and ended up in the next suburb.
And from the 2021 season (that just started) there will be 5 on the bench.. 4 plus one sub in case of an injury they can use the sub which happened to my team last season where nearly all the bench were injured & we only had 1 player left... also the regular season goes for 23 weeks now not 22..
another thing that i find really cool and interesting about aussie rules is how old the game is. it was invented in the 1850s and first played in 1858, meaning that it's older than both basketball and NFL. you might want to have a look at some of the older stuff like top 10 AFL Enforcers - you'll find that the game used to be a LOT harder and brutal, especially in the 70s-90s period - or highlights from guys like Leigh Matthews, Gary Ablett sr, Tony Lockett and Malcolm Blight just to name a few
Yes, once the AFL football is over at end of September the cricket takes over, the local state team and the national side play games there til March each year.
In one game played at the MCG, the most ground a player covered was 17km. Two boundary umpires who wore a GPS unit travelled 18.98km and 18.56km. Average is about 16km per game. Soccer players average about 11-15km per game. Our umpires are probably fitter than some of the players lol
There can be 10 additional minutes of play because it can take a bit of time to scrape a hurt/dead player off the turf and throw him into an ambulance/hole.
And Richmond won the grand final this year 🐯 Love people learning about our sport. Footy is such a big thing...mainly in Melbourne but it’s starting to get Australia wide now with all the new teams added in the last few years.
No doubt that Victoria is the Mecca for Aussie Rules, but its been HUGE across the Western states since its inception. In 1877, the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) was formed followed by the Victorian Football Association (VFA) 3 days later. Tasmanian Football League (TFL) 1879 and Western Australian Football League (WAFL) 1885. , the SANFL is the oldest surviving football league of any code in Australia and one of the oldest football competitions in the world
who else is Aussie :).

Disappointed in you for enjoying the Bunnings Snags more than afl even though afl is awesome
If you've been to Australia and you've watch AFL "your Australian" and will be treated as such 💯 Aussie Aussie Aussie.
ravcreed . I hereby decree, You are now an honorary Aussie. Good onya mate.
I mean, Soccer players might run around for 90 minutes at a mid pace. AFL players are often sprinting and taking hits for 2 hours.
The soccer player who covers the most distance per game averages 12km. In the AFL the highest is 16km. I think that says it all really
Yeah I agree but AFL has interchange while soccer is purely substitutes but still not enough for the size of the pitch
Exalt chrom yea they play more games but they’re talking abt stamina as in how far you can sprint not recovery times
@Exalt Chrom has nothing to do with the convo but ok
You ever played a game before at a competitive level? No
wasn't a taunt at soccor players athleticism.
@@dezza3g897 some of the players get close to the 16-17km mark. and always sprinting. plus kicking 50+ metres and tackling and all
A few of the stud midfielders nearly hit marathon numbers of running distance fairly consistently too
17km is an elite runner in the AFL and doesn’t happen every game. Most games there will be 1 or 2 players around the 16km mark.
Plus most afl players are faster and need to run over prolonged periods of time at a fast pace they would need great fitness for that
Best marks and goals in AFL history

@S, Lianis nice
@S, Lianis
I thought you said no AFL player had ever made the switch to another code numbskull , but you obviosly googled two for yourself to prove that you don't know what your talking about , so I guess that makes three AFL players playing other codes , who's the moron now dipshit. Have a nice day.
Haha 😂 best reaction 😳 I’ve seen so far. I love watching foreigners react to our sensational sport
Hahahaha Yeah so do I .....Bit of a crack up really lol 🤣🤣
@S, Lianis, except you who seem to have taken the time and effort to watch and comment on a video that you supposedly dislike. I think deep down you are threatened by its popularity.
@S, Lianis
Nice attempt at trolling, why waste your time.
As it stands AFL team Sydney Swans has a far greater membership than any NRL team, even GWS Giants (9 year old team) has more memberships than every NRL team bar one (Brisbane Broncos)
NRL (entire league) average crowd 2019 = 15030, AFL ave crowd in NSW 2019 = 23014, AFL Sydney Swans home game ave = 30070
AFL (entire league) average crowd 2019 = 35122.
@@unsociablemutt2303
Yep, just over 35k average for AFL making it fourth (before Gold Coast and GWS joined, AFL was third), English Premier League is third at 38.5k average, German Bundesliga Soccer League is 2nd at 43.5k, the NFL kills them all at 67k average crowd.
Check out the 2018 grand final. West coast vs Collingwood. 5 point game with a crowd of 100,022.
6:58 Ground holds 100,100 approx. Most grand finals get to that or near it.
Ground holds upwards of 115000, including standing area
The largest ever attendance for a game of Australian rules football was the 1970 VFL Grand Final at the MCG which saw an attendance of 121,696
not to mention they usually sell out and can't fit anymore people on the granny

Footballers have to run about 15 Km a game. The games are divided into 4 qtrs of 25-30min.
Put on together the running, kicking, bumping and tackling and you're pretty buggered and sore after it.
Harry Everett they are 20 minutes, just stopages go on at the end of the quarter
@Abbott IsGone U dont when u play?
Midfielders often run between 15-21 kilometres in a normal game. It often takes 4 to 5 years to build up the stamina required to run out whole games.
Fact
The AFL was made Before the NFL
afl was actually invented to keep cricketers fit during winter.
I’m from Texas been an AFL fan for about 15 yrs, I wish I would’ve found it soon. It’s my favorite sport! I’m a Hawthorne Hawks fan! I know I’m going to catch a little for that
Nothing wrong with the Mighty Hawks mate, the only team to win the GF every decade and starts in the 60's, the most dominant 👍
Yeah go the hawks !!
Good onya, mate... You should support your USAFL as well.. From what I understand a Texas-based team (Austin Crows if I remember correctly) is quite successful.
Jarrad Molloy I didn’t realize there were any here. I’m going to have to check it out
Appreciated this one as I had no clue about the rules. The bouncing thing seems pretty interesting. Have a good one!✌
One major difference: When you are tackled, you DON'T want to fumble the ball in American Football.
In AFL, you MUST fumble and release the ball, except when catching the kicks.
Also the football has no grip like in NRL, Gridiron, etc. A LOT easier to catch and control a rugby ball.
You CANT fumble the ball while being tackled in AFL either. That’s called “ incorrect disposal” and possession is turned over with a free kick.
Brock Mak you’ll be penalised for fumbling if you’re being tackled 😂
The umpire is also a good judge of the distance, and will pay a free kick to the opposition if they run too far.
mate look up "international rules" Australia vs Ireland in a hybrid of afl and gaelic football
Bowiesinspace omg I forgot about that game haha what a cluster fuck haha
Or don't look it up, absolute garbage!
I missed the fights they had during the game
Bowiesinspace guys we gotta like this so he sees it
vamh26 wtf it’s so good
You should react to top 50 afl marks of all time. A mark is a catch in afl the the best marks are ‘speckys’ as they are known as where you jump onto other players to mark the ball
The greatest mark of all by Alex Jesulenko in the 1970 semi final against Collingwood isn't on that list.
But the worst mark of all time by Gary Moorcroft is.
it’s funny seeing someone who isn’t an afl supporter react to the afl
"In front of 90,000 plus"....make that 100,000 +
The good thing about AFL as not with soccer is it has a draft system. It seems football(soccer) is now rules by who can pay the most in players. It is predictable who is going to be at the top of the league.
@S, Lianis the point went flying over your head there mate
Yes, Leicester winning the league was amazing, and no one saw it coming, but it's just not happening again, think, whose one the league since then, Chelsea, City, City, who will win this season, either City or Liverpool, who won the 5 seasons leading up to Leicester? United, City, United, City, Chelsea Always the team with the most money
And to top it off, Leicester was the first team that's not one of the "big 6" to finish top 4 since Everton in 2005
So I think you'll find it is predictable
Oh, and the grand final is played in front of 100,000+ and some regular season games between big clubs can get more than 90,000 people at the game.
I love that fact that people from all around the world get to see our amazing sport
S, Lianis are you a rugby supporter, I assume ?
I love AFL too. I'm from Malaysia 😀. My fav player is Patrick Cripps and Lachie Weller.

YEAH CRIPPAAAAA
@S, Lianis looks like a legitimate account to me. Insecure NRL fans start having mental breakdowns when they find out that the AFL is actually finding popularity overseas
Think of it like Gaelic football meets basketball on a cricket field. It’s Australia’s original sport. Grand final is usually a 100 000 people turnout, and that’s only in the stadium. It’s an incredible spectacle. Parades everything.
Don’t forget that AFL players tackle as well which draws energy on top of running and jumping for marks.
And in Victoria we get a day off before the grand final!
The public holiday is called “grand final eve” haha
I afl, you only don’t get up, if you can’t, it is an unwritten rule! If you break and arm and stay down, you are a wimp, so get up and walk off, but if you get knocked out cold till the ambo you are only recognised if you go for the ball, if not, you are dropped for when you get back. That! Is south Australian under 13 football
There is now an offside like rule. What happens is at the start of each centre bounce (after a goal is scored or start of a quarter), there must be 6 players in each say third of the ground (6 in forward 50, 6 in defensive 50 and 6 in between those 50 arcs).
I feel like I could be down with the AFL
The afl’s biggest hits are still fun to watch though 👍🏻
Ah your one of those people that like how the game has been ruined , the bump and hard hit WAS part of football , made the game something special , now it's just a scrappy mess with umpires blowing a whistle every 30 sec and players , spectators and commentators have no idea why but that's cool each to their own
dana bray I love a good bump/tackle.
It’s just that if you’re looking for really hard hits you’re more likely to find them in a RL video.
dana bray . I agree with Schmick. If you want to see what you’re talking about, go watch boxing or wrestling. We prefer skill any day.
Biffs bumps and brawlers
Ice hockey or normal hockey??
@peterhoz cool
It’s really interesting to watch how people react to AFL. It’s a lot more brutal than most other ball sports and so many people are shocked by it
You saw the size of the field my friend.
Should do top AFL goals from the boundary. Some of them are insane, Eddie Betts especially. Just subbed to channel btw
I am Aussie I love footy and soccer
There was 100,014 people at this years grand final.
Also 100,022 in 2018, 100,021 in 2017 :)

Best spectator sport in the world.
@S, Lianis does it bother us if we haven't told the rest of the world about our sport? Not a bit, we're happy to be No. 1 in the greatest country of them all
@S, Lianis AFLX doesn't exist any more. Sorry to let down your hopes kid. Anyways, it's almost time for the BBL to start. Go Stars.
Love the reaction mate! As an Aussie, this was great to watch
Definitely fitter since our game goes for 120 mins on a bigger field not 90 mins on a way smaller field.
Yep, AFL players run an average of about 15kms a game compared to Soccer players that run average of approximately 10kms a game, also the tackling in Aussie Rules is far more intense, also more high speed sprints in AFL games too.
36 players on the pitch at the same time though, 14 more than soccer.
Not comparing though, crazy fit players!
S, Lianis there’s no restricted areas in AFL!
You see it a lot? You mean on TV or people playing on fields?
Dylan De La Pena . Here’s a guarantee. Come to Australia get in amongst the crowd at a big game, and you will become just as crazy about it as us Australians. And believe me that’s crazy.
I love being Australian but also proud to be a from Melbourne which is the home of footy🥰🇦🇺💗🙏🏻
I've learned from this as well. I didn't have a clue about most of this. Still hoping for you to do one of my video ideas LoL
The four football codes in Australia (AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer) used to have competitions to rate the players of each. AFL players dominated in speed, stamina, and all-round athletic ability. Some players today cover around 20 km in a single two hour game.
The average player runs 18km ( about 12 miles ) per game. They are really fit to run that far while jumping and being tackled all over the place.
And at the grand final, you can here yelling all down my street and sometimes they put a projector and screen at my school so everyone can watch
AFL - Organised Chaos
Jakeb Byfield bunch of seagulls fighting over a chip 😂
When you put your knees up on the opponents back to mark the ball it’s usually called a specky (spectacular mark)
Yes, definitely do some more AFL reactions. I love that sport! (Or some Australian's might be insulted in that. Sorry, your religion)
Have a look at the grand final highlights of any year (just not this year...it was shocking).
look at the 2018 grand final it was a down to the wire Collingwood vs West Coast Eagles
Oliver Freeman . Hey! Are you telling me there is some other form of religion?

Noooo that's not a taunt. It's 100% true
They play gaelic footy, we have a game we play against them which is international rules which is like a hybrid between the two. Both exciting sports.
One of your compatriots won the Brownlow Medal, JimSteynes. Look him up.
6:13 I know of him not because of his height, but how injury-prone he got since 2016. He retired this year.
2:35 an AFL field is about 180m long and 75m wide (ish) some are slightly shorter but wider but don't waver much more than 10mx10m (5 at each end and widest point)
Should make a shirt with "How are they/you not dead?" I'd buy
You need to remember this vid is made to explain our awesome sport to American's so it needs to be in a language & use terminology they understand.
16 yard run is basically 10 paces if they go more than 10 without a bounce it’s generally considered travelling
It’s like every common sport mixed together
Barack Obama . You are quite correct Mr Obama. Back in 1896, Cricket players decided they needed a sport to keep fit during the off season. They concocted a game by taking a few things from different sports. They certainly would have kept rather fit, considering the distance from one goal to the other, WAS ONE MILE.
I was waiting for this vid
Im Aussie mate it’s normal
It's a pretty cool sport. First watched it in the 80s on cable here in the U.S.
You should do a vid about the AFL teams
It would be good
The ground is nearly 200m long and 200m wide.
Watch more AFL like the AFL games of 2019
The stamina part is true but that's during the game.
Big announcement Finn Balor lost somewhere he didn't reacting on Emiway Bantai and his diss track...😶😶😶😶
Adam. The four players on the bench are called interchange players, they rotate on and off the field when a player need a little rest.

RStanley . You forgot to tell him that the original distance between one goal to the next was 1 mile
I have found that even people who don’t follow the sport know the rules and the teams because it’s so big it’s good for making conversation
Watch AFL Essendon Vs Hawthorn ‘Line in the Sand’ match from a couple years ago. You’ll love it, huge huge brawl
Basically, the "ground" is a cricket ground size, (Lords etc), used during the winter.......
Thank you for the hearts Adam.
to give an idea, the MCG is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, so the field is a Cricket ground
you should watch the story behind mason cox, he’s from America but plays AFL
And from the 2021 season (that just started) there will be 5 on the bench.. 4 plus one sub in case of an injury they can use the sub which happened to my team last season where nearly all the bench were injured & we only had 1 player left... also the regular season goes for 23 weeks now not 22..
another thing that i find really cool and interesting about aussie rules is how old the game is. it was invented in the 1850s and first played in 1858, meaning that it's older than both basketball and NFL. you might want to have a look at some of the older stuff like top 10 AFL Enforcers - you'll find that the game used to be a LOT harder and brutal, especially in the 70s-90s period - or highlights from guys like Leigh Matthews, Gary Ablett sr, Tony Lockett and Malcolm Blight just to name a few
geoface1 . My research says first games played 1896
Glad you did this one. Freemantle is my team.
Thats very unfortunate, Fremantle by the way!
So I just learnt that the MCG stands for Melbourne cricket ground... I’m slow slow
Yes, once the AFL football is over at end of September the cricket takes over, the local state team and the national side play games there til March each year.
just wait until ur at the mcg singing ur teams song after the siren. Grew up with that feeling and it’s the best
as a aussie this video is bloody gold
In one game played at the MCG, the most ground a player covered was 17km. Two boundary umpires who wore a GPS unit travelled 18.98km and 18.56km. Average is about 16km per game. Soccer players average about 11-15km per game. Our umpires are probably fitter than some of the players lol
it was started as a way of keeping cricket players fit in winter but it took on a life of it's own and is still played on cricket grounds
There can be 10 additional minutes of play because it can take a bit of time to scrape a hurt/dead player off the turf and throw him into an ambulance/hole.
The whistle is blown when a kick is caught clean.... it means u get 10 seconds unimpeded to decide what ull do
I is aussie. the oval is about 100 metres long. 50m from centre.
And Richmond won the grand final this year 🐯
Love people learning about our sport.
Tasmanian Football League (TFL) 1879 and Western Australian Football League (WAFL) 1885.
, the SANFL is the oldest surviving football league of any code in Australia and one of the oldest football competitions in the world
It’s just as big in SA, WA, TAS and much of NT and southern NSW.
