TfL Rail Paddington to Heathrow

  • With a new tube map for May 2018, TfL Rail services now run between Paddington through Hayes and Harlington, and down to Heathrow.
We went to catch the first ever 'purple' train (Class 345) in passenger service, and try to get our heads around the service pattern...
    TO SUMMARISE!
    BEFORE ...
Heathrow Express (4 trains per hour, to Terminals 2&3 and then T5)
Heathrow Connect, USED to run to Terminal 2&3, and then also (if you stayed on) to T5 as well
There was a Heathrow Express shuttle every 15 minutes between T2&3 and T4.
    AFTER ...
Heathrow Express - UNCHANGED - 4 trains per hour, to Terminals 2&3 and then T5)
TfL Rail, two trains per hour (New Class 345) only as far as Hayes & Harlington
Old 'Connect' trains (now with TfL Rail badge on them) every half an hour, all the way to T2&3, and then T4.
TfL Rail shuttle every half an hour between T4 and T2&3, meaning that there is a train every 15 minutes from T4
    FUTURE ...
Crossrail/Elizabeth Line (New Class 345 purple trains) will run 6 trains an hour to T2&3, four with then go to T4, two will go to T5.
Heathrow Express remains unchanged... for now.
    Clear as mud? Excellent.

The "New" bit of the bay platform at Hayes & Harlington is where it's been extended so that 9 car train can fit here (Currently they're only using 7 car trains) - all station out west have had work done to them to extend the platforms.
Also, yes - it's just "Terminals 2&3" now, Terminal 1 closed a while ago.

Geoff can you look into Oysters/Contactless on Gatwick Express?, my thought is, if you travel on the Gatwick Express with contactless, there and back 7 days or so apart, would you get charged two singles at £19ish, rather than buying a paper anytime return ticket for £32ish? Ideally it should look for a return journey within 30 days, and charge you the cheapest fare.

i think it will pass through some parts on its way to reading eventually. West drayton - iver - langley - slough - burnham - taplow - maindenhead - twyford and finally reading. I believe this is the last step tho. Presumably done this way because they want to ease in the newer service in case of issues i guess.

The number of rail options to Heathrow are now incredible. We Yanks have two subway lines to JFK. Two. No heavier rail. No JFK express. Just two regular subway lines. Because we're a world capital, don't you know. Just like Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris and London. Yep. Every bit as great as them. Our politicians tell us so.

LIRR to Jamaica and thence to JFK Airtrain. So yes NYC does have “heavier” rail to the airport.

    • @peabody1976

DC has direct rail service only to Reag*n National Airport, currently. In three years, Dulles Airport will get one subway line that connects it. Right now, neither Dulles or BWI have direct rail service, and BWI has a light rail service from Baltimore and a commuter rail service from DC but only to a station that isn't on the airport grounds -- you then have to finish your trip by bus.

curious why difficult? The Piccadilly line runs direct from Heathrow through central London and for the normal price of a zone 6 underground train ticket. The Heathrow Express is the premium train non-stop direct to Paddington Station (not that useful) and is expensive. The slower Heathrow Connect service to Paddington, which this new service will replace did not cost that much more than that Piccadilly line but again only went to Paddington. So currently the Piccadilly line is still the easiest method as it goes through central London. When the Elizabeth line opens in December the trains in the video will also go through central London and out to East London. These will be 800m full size trains so will be then be more more convenient and easier to use than the Picaddilly line.

You can also easily avoid a higher train fare by taking the 140 towards Harrow Weald and getting off at Hayes and Harlington. That way, it'll only charge you the standard Zone 5 fare.

I wonder what will happen to the Heathrow Express? It had a monopoly before since while it is still the fastest train into London, Crossrail will get business folk to Canary Wharf and tourists right into the heart of London quickly without changing at Paddington or travelling on the long Piccadilly line, which admittedly does skip a few stations but is still slow, will the HeXprss have to become less premium or will Crossrail eventually run a non stop service itself?

On my way back, I had planned to use the Picdilly line for a bit of variation, but surprise surprise, it had a signal failure at Heathrow T2&3 so it as suspended! Lots of confused tourists, forking out for the HEX fare when they don't realise £10 for an oyster and £10.10 for the fare would be cheaper than even a SINGLE on HEX!

New beeps when doors open sound like a confused amalgamation or mix of the Hong Kong MTR's ding-dong-upon-opening, the Javelin (when doors shut), and a rather musical door chime on Beijing Subway Line 4 used for the first few days, before MTR (yes they run this one as well) barged in with their classic 20-beep "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY" door ALARM (quite literally).
(Or did you prefer the Central line door alarms that gave you an ear-sore? They're actually the more effectives ones - but yes, they might take a toll on your ears...)

We took the tube from Terminal 4, since it was too early for our hotel check in and weren’t in much of a rush... even though our hotel was just down the road from Paddington (changed at Earls Court for the Circle Line). Plus that saved us some money to spend later.

Hi guys :) As I live in Walthamstow and travel to Heathrow for work (nightmare) I change at Finsbury Park as I only have to walk across platform there instead of the walk at Green Park :) to connect! Was hoping that TFL from Paddington to Heathrow would have been cheaper but I guess that is not to be the case. I know you can take the overground missing Z1 and get there for £1.50 but that takes many an hour. Getting home when working nights when the tube is un-operational is the N9 and then the N38 bus from Green Park back to Central. Was hoping with the E-line coming into action that I might be able to get to do London/LHR quicker and for not much more expense but my dreams are not to be!

You can even go from Croydon and London to any terminal in Heathrow for £1.5.
Check the X26 bus service and once you're in Heathrow just use the free connection to any terminal

Can't you ride the Tube for free between terminals at Heathrow, so you could get the fast Express to the airport and then use the Tube to get to the terminals it doesn't serve?

    • @norbitonflyer5625

You could, but Heathrow Express and TfL Rail between them serve all the terminals anyway.

Having rode the class 345 on this route for the very first time today (Eastbound) (and yeah, I sometimes use this route for my journeys between my home and education institute, I'm not an autistic middle-aged train-fanatic although I was especially incentivised to use this route in the first place because of the new trains), I was impressed with the performance; quick acceleration/deceleration and significantly more efficient motor that is only a fraction as noisy as that of the class 387. Sitting in the front carriage (since I was observantly evaluating this model), sitting on the longitudinal seats by the wide windows felt a lot like riding on the S7 stock, but the commuter-class operating speed took the experience to a whole new dimension. I recorded a top speed of 128 km/h, which was achieved between Southall and West Ealing. The downside was the interior paint job; very plain and dull. It disappointingly lacked the vivid colouration of the interiors of the tube carriages, with dark grey inner walls and grab poles that were either black or unpainted metallic (tut, tut). Furthermore the door sounds were incredibly loud!
What I don't understand is why the TFL rail services don't call at every station through which they pass; only two trains per hour serve Acton Mainline and Hanwell.
But overall, a very impressive ride, and I admire the aerodynamic shape of the nose of each end car, although the curved rectangular shape of the headlights were rather disappointing.

Why are they not running the new purple trains all the way to LHR? Do they not have enough of the new class of trains ready to go yet? Infrastructure that isn't finished yet?

    • @norbitonflyer5625

Incompatible signalling system - it needs updating in the tunnel for the new trains. And that can't be done until the 332s on the Express service are replaced, as they can't use the new system.

First thing that happens to unknowing tourists arriving in the UK at Heathrow is they get ripped off! The impression given by the greeting ticket sellers when I passed through last week is that you have to take the express service to Paddington. Signs for the very much cheaper but admittedly longer trip on the tube via the Piccadilly Line are almost invisible, being minuscule. Inexcusable, Heathrow authorities!

I bet those ticket barriers at Heathrow will cause delays, it's not as if the tunnels they're located in are especially wide. I've previously used HEx with a print at home ticket, will the gates read printed barcodes?

    • @fetchstixRHD
      @fetchstixRHD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure how the barriers are set up, but surely it could end up making transferring between terminals more difficult for people to do as well if you have to go through them?
