Eric, thanks for what I consider a tribute to the man every country star wants to sound like. My Grandson, he's 9, is at this moment watching you and learning the play what we agree is the greatest country song ever written. Thanks for sharing your gift.
You are so welcome Carl and so sweet that your little guy is learning to play the Possum's greatest hit! He was loved by all and here in Nashville considered a Legend and missed by all. There will never be another :(
Be blessed my friend & stay in touch.
Erich
Carl P. Mayfield agreed,he's been my favorite since I was a little boy,my youngest daughter is 7 now but when she was 4 she would always say George Jones is my favorite, and she missed him. Randy Travis would be my next top guy.
Thanks for the quick reminder... I grew up with my dad playing this tune. So simple, but so powerful.
🙌
Who's gonna fill thier shoes is the best country song
Best I've heard, I could shut my eyes while you were singing -- and I could see George. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Very good arrangement of The Best Country Song Ever Written Buddy.
Thank you Sledge...George was The Man!
e:)
eric thank you.
i started playing a few months ago. and yes. this is the best song ever
Very,Very Good Job My Friend. A Great Song done by an Excellent Picker/Teacher and the Vocals are Not Bad either. Thank You so Very Much for sharing Your Time and Knowledge with us.
great easy to follow lesson for any level musician
Glad you think so!😀🙏
To be honest I subscribed when you said it’s the greatest country song ever. Haven’t even heard the video yet.
👍
What's the picking pattern? He didn't say
I was totally thinking the same thing.
I like that finger picking with the alternating base notes. Also like the idea of sliding that capo up a fret to change the key. Excellent lesson.
horseman528 Thank you horseman. Appreciate the kind word. e:)
Sung this at a friend's funeral a couple of years ago... Not a dry eye in the house. Wish I'd seen this video sooner.
🙏
Amen....he was a great man and this song one of the very best! Thank you for your comment.
e :)
Thank's man this has really help me not only with this song but with others.
Good to hear :) Stay in touch and keep it rockin!
e :)
You make that C sharp and key change look easy
Been wanting to learn this song for a long time.
I love this song so much.
Good shit dude! Appreciate the video and your time.
👍🙏
Hey Eric, don't be " sorry George" @ 8:15 You sound great....Thanks for the great lessons. Oak
best song ever . and a good lesson sir
Thanks that capo trick was what I needed … why didn’t I think of that
👍
Love it! Thumbs up!~John
🙌
Thank you very much. I'm very much intermediate/expert but I always look up songs I like. I almost can't deny that this may be one of the best if not the very best country song ever written. I enjoyed your teaching method and how you say "sorry george" while singing... You sound great, really but it aint George... Well played my man.
Thank you Jack!
Love country, unfortunately I'm so bad with music. Would love to learn this one day.

I agree, the best country song ever. In videos of George Jones playing it, I see he has a capo on the third fret. Does he do it in a different key or play the chords your playing but with different chords with it capoed but still plays G C D?
You seem like an awesome tutor, shame your half way across the world!
Gradually making my way through your lessons and enjoying them. Any chance you could do an acoustic lesson for maybe I'm amazed by Paul McCartney?
Great lesson! Thanks!
👍
So beautiful....Thanks Erich...
+Christine You are so welcome! e:)
hi, took note of what you said about george using the capo to change key, i have just watched a few videos of george, and in some he plays the whole song with the capo on 2nd fret, in key of d (playing c, f, and g shapes), in another he starts with capo on 1, plays the c shapes, and moves the capo up 1 as you showed, and in another video he has capo on 2, and plays g shapes, seems to change his key a lot, suppose it depended on his voice on the day, his band must have loved him !
:) But there is not another like him ! Sure left a hole in Country Music!
e :)
Nice reminder. Thank you. For an even easier version play the Johnny Cash version - just strum E/A/B open chords with no key change.
Love how this sounds but I cannot quite make out the picking pattern. You never actually said what strings and what order you are picking.
The nice thing about finger picking is you can kind of use any pattern interchangeably
Is the bridge chord that is being omitted an Eb?
Thank you so much
i love that song, that and grand tour every time i hear them i tear up even when i play them, georg lones and johnny cash rock and dont forgit conway twitty hello darling another greate song, you should teach
that one than. thanks for the vids
You are so welcome Johnny. Thank you. Keep playing and keeping their music alive!
e :)
love this lesson....thanks.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
I think their is a key change right after the first verse. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure.
You aren't going to just teach us a song. You're going to teach us how to be badass. Thanks for that.
Yes, with bar chords.
nice lesson man
thanks :)
Thank you Murali. And you are so welcome. Please, stay in touch.
e :)
Nice voice 👍🏻
Very good ty 👍👍🤠
👍🙏
Besides the thumb, what fingers/strings are you picking....thanks, great video.
picking pattern confuses me as i can't see well by the fact that you didn't zoom in your hands while picking. sounds good but i am unable to do it. could you please help me with the number of strings you picked for each chord? thanks
T. Z. I believe it's (6, 3, 2&1 at the same time, 3, 4, 3, 2&1, 3, then repeat) for the G chord. (5, 3, 2&1, 3, 6, 3, 2&1, 3, then repeat) for the C chord. (5, 3, 2&1, 3, 4, 3, 2&1, 3, then repeat) for the D chord.. Just recognize that you're repeating the (3, 2&1, 3) picking pattern and altering your base notes.
hi guitarsage many thanks for this beautiful song, i have a question about the capo...
is it possible to play the keychange without capo? thanks
You are so welcome my friend. I appreciate you & your comment. Please, follow me on FB & Twitter.
e :)
Thanks. Good video! 😊

Hey kids!! Check out my free online course at: www.yourguitarsage.com/free-ugs-membership
Good stuff :)
you should have explained what your doing as far as your left hand pattern, would have helped a lot
What do you mean 5th string ? It looks like you are hitting 6th and 4th strings and do some extra picking on 1st through 3rd strings .Sounds great but either your very confused on your instructions or I am confused any way thanks really appreciate people like yourself that are willing to help others and for the lesson just wish it was more clearly done especially for beginners
Your gratitude is refreshing. That you, my friend. 🤗
more George please!!! Grand tour, don't need ur rocking chair.
There's no way I can sing this, but it'll be fun practice anyway.
I've been looking one on It's Finally Friday by George Jones. It would be cool if you would do one.
👍
joe yancey I'm sure it's just going to be some of your basic guitar chords like either C G D, or a b and B&E. Not to mention I'm pretty positive you can go on f****** TH-cam and ask for the cords and get it sent right to your goddamn screen!
MADDY_ DADDY was i talking to you? No, so but the hell out
Thanks friend. Glad you know about it. People are eating poison.
I think George mostly plays this live with the capo in the third position
ok but the fingerpick pattern will not work true?
it's a mandolin, used in country music alot.
You done a great on it i met the possum in Georgia I was ay with Shane Owen's I tried to buy him a beer and he insisted on a sweet tea he had stopped drinking alcohol for years he was scouting talent he also introduced me to dolly I am a rhythm Ayer and would rather do the front porch thing
👍🤗
Great song! Thanks for sharing this. However, when I watch George play this he's using different chords. Capo @ 2, E, A (A7), and B7 ??? He does do the capo switch to the third fret... In uTube vid CYQViYm92hg for instance...
thanks..and thanks for the monsanto mention..people need to wake up
You can see him move the capo at 1:42 here: th-cam.com/video/qSqsRHE5cvU/w-d-xo.html
p.s. I like D7 better than D in this
Haha! Right??! Nice!
My Facebook page is: Your Guitar Sage.............
Looking forward to hearing from you :) e
Let me know how you are doing.
A bit of a closer view of your finger picking pattern would have been great... Otherwise, a very good lesson.
great tips but more importantly I really appreciate you mentioning Monsanto & encouraging others to look into it for themselves. it's so crazy if you tell people flat out they think you're a conspiracy nut.
+bryan829 Thanks Bryan. So much more to the whole thing than people realize. BTW - Tune in tomorrow Feb. 20th...12p EST for the latest webcast! e:)
Can anyone lead me to a Drinking don't kill me toutorial
+SWAG Haha ..there might be one or two! e
0:47 7:40 .... your welcome.
don't we all!
I almost agree. 2nd best country song, after "A Boy Named Sue". "As the yeaurhss went slowly by..." great set up for the heart break. I remember the day I realized what "First time I'd seen him smile in yeeeaaauurrhhhs" really meant. I thought the guy had finally grew a pair, then..."Why'd they place a wreath upon his door?...that must be some southern thing when they have a "Git over her" party. Then "And soon they'll carry him away..." BAM OHMIGOD....HE LOVED HER TIL HE DIED!!!
+Dan McConnell Thanks for your comment Dan. BTW - Tune in tomorrow Feb. 20th...12p EST for the latest webcast! e:)
no one cant play this song bro close tho
You are so right. There was only one "Possum" :(
e :)
U r confusing me a lot dude
a LOT of these guys are getting payoffs from these companies. They are in cahoots with the devil.
Are you kidding me? You really had to do some Bob Barker s*** at the end of this video?
i can't believe my senators (schumer and gillibrand) voted against gmo labeling. i called them both. what is this? i pledge allegiance to monsanto?
Talk to much bro..
actually...'Stand By Your Man...' is the Best
