This is the first song I heard from The Gathering as a 16 year old in the radio. And I was so impressed that I had to buy the album. To me, it was unique music experience, and it's still one of the best of their discography. I'll leave Anneke and her unique voice without comment - I just love her and it would be a very long post 😅
For a deeper dive into The Gathering's sound, I recommend *Travel* (TG25: Live at Doornroosje) - or (if you want to be more original and react as first 😎) the song *Souvenirs* from the later album of the same name (it's more alternative rock than metal, I guess), another of my personal favourites. Anyway, thanks and looking forward to the next video!

To the person who requested this great classic and included the studio version, well done. I think this was a great request, and an excellent reaction by you, as always. I loved it. Although there will undoubtedly be people who will argue that live versions of things are better, they are wrong. This is almost never true for a first listen of anything, because the sound is always much superior, and this is no exception. The song is about singer/songwriter and guitarist Anneke van Giersbergen's fantasy of building a time machine to witness all of human history in her own lifetime. The sound effects and background dialogue are from the 1960's movie, "The Time Machine", which in turn was based on a classic science fiction novel by H.G.Wells. This was a foundational song in the development of symphonic metal from this Dutch band from Oss, in the south central Netherlands. This was from the band's first album to feature Anneke.

I purchased this album when I was... 15, I guess? and it stayed with me forever. It shaped the genre.
I've seen Anneke live plenty of times, and she's an unforgettable performer 🩷. I think she did play this song in one of her solo shows I attended, it was a very special moment.

Wow, VERY surprised you chose NOT to do a live version. That's unfortunate. There are several good ones out there. As you know, this type of music is enhanced by seeing the artists perform live. Take care. 😊

Not for a first listen. Also, this was a specific request from someone, and i agree with their choice.

They will appreciate the live versions better after listening to the album version and reading the lyrics.

I had to click on this even though I have no idea who this artist is, lol. I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, so the thumbnail got me.
I’m a little behind in your reactions. I hope your family is doing well. ❤️

It is complicated. I got this album when it was released. It is a great metal album without a genre you can tell, that makes it very special. On the other hand, later works of the gathering had more intimacy, it is hard to explain. Others have such atmosphere that it really teleports you somewhere. I recommend you trying IF then else.. it is a very weird and special album.

Too bad you didn't watch the live video from the 1996 Pinkpop festival (th-cam.com/video/1HUMwinV2AQ/w-d-xo.html). There you can see a very young Anneke van Giersbergen!

Best TG song? Nope. Great track and their most well-known perhaps, but not nearly their best.
Treat yourselves to the "holy trinity" of The Gathering songs from their legendary 25th Anni(e)versary concert TG25 live at Doornroosje (Travel, On Most Surfaces and Waking Hour). Start here: "The Gathering - Travel (TG25: Live at Doornroosje - unofficial video)". Enjoy!

Travel is a very long, proggy, trip-rock song, which I wouldn't recommend to any beginner fan trying to get into the band. On Most Surfaces would be a much better option.
