Basically, it's the generation that is now going through the midlife crisis stage of life. One Chinese guy of this generation that might be more well-known by western audiences is Eric Li from one of those TED talks. (He's also an interesting guy to listen to, by the way. 👍) GenX are the ones that grew up post-Mao, lived their childhood in poverty, became disillusioned when they watched the fall of (Soviet) communism, had to work hard for their wealth/success, and think it's cool to watch American TV series like Friends. Eric Li even became a Berkeley hippie at one point. 😅 The 90s and 00s are much more confident. They *don't* think of Hollywood productions as anything special or of western culture as higher valued compared to what is produced by China. They enjoy web dramas produced by homegrown Chinese companies such as Tencent, iQiyi, etc. They are the ones driving forward a cultural renaissance in their country by, for example, pushing the hanfu fashion movement. This ugly neo-McCarthyist belligerence proliferating in the west is only further alienating the 90s and 00s from the west. The core reason of the current western (including Japan and India) anti-China sentiment is "How can they Chinese achieve so much in such a short period of time? They must be doing something unfair, either stealing, cheating, or coercing, etc.". Actually, the primary source of competitiveness if from education and hard working. The typical Chinese students study 10-12 hours per day, while western students study 6-8 hours. This difference times 12 - 16 years, this is about 10K to 15K hours of education time. Also, the average Chinese worker works 46 hours per week, comparing to USA worker's 34 hours.

Welcome the tough questions. Martin handled them well. Authors typically has zero control over the titles of their books. Publisher’s marketing person makes up titles. IMO, the next 10 years China has significant challenges. But imagine how strong China will be after China overcomes these challenges.
Come on Emmanuel, obversely you have not met the right kind of Chinese. May be India should learn from China and say never again after what Britain has done to India. By the way, Chinese just don't believe in self praise. We are not lack of confidence, we are just confident and no need to boast about it. Martin is spot on, you cant understand a nation by just taking a snap shot and not understanding the history of a nation.
Look how Modi was torn down by his hubris! He confidently stated before the World Economic Forum that he had licked the Covid-19 pandemic, only to return to India to see the most catastrophic explosion of the Indian variant!
Century of humiliation is just a constant reminder to all Chinese people that they should never end up in the same situation again. China must always be strong and advance in technology so that no other countries can ever show up at the door with guns pointing threatening.
China’s rise does not mean that China wants to dominate the world - have colonies like past Imperialist powers (UK, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium) and the USA ( Hawaii, the Philippines, etc). When China becomes No 1, it will not allow a Gang of 7 or 8 countries to make rules for the rest of the world. Every country will have a say. China does not want to export its model of governance which is a model unique to China born of its cultural background (Confucian values, historical aversion to chaos and adoption of some Marxist elements (democratic centralism, etc), adoption of some elements of capitalist mechanism but not allowing for the primacy of capitalists. The Chinese model is a dynamic one, constantly learning from the masses and adapting policies to suit the reality and new challenges. Its governance system has a dynamic feedback loops, eg the change from one- child policy to the revised 3-child policy. It’s governance is not fixated because it is outcome-oriented and it is people-centred. Some have labelled its governance as “authoritarian with accountability”, for lack of a better term. China is not stuck at its fossilised dynastic model, albeit there are also good elements that have relevance eg respect for education, respect for central power. China under CCP has moved on with its own political experimentations that the western countries can only dream about. The western analysts should read more about Chinese philosophy, history and culture….take an “anthro-vision”….the title of a new book.
I think if China turns into a 2000 ton gorilla, that's based on their capabilities. The only thing anybody else can do is whether or not their constant poking will leave them with an angry 200 lbs gorilla.
You are not interviewing Martin, you wanted to show Martin that you know somethings and that's unfortunate, am not sure he will give you another chance to waste his time like this.
"Holding China together" a Western copyright?? China was an organized institution 2 thousand years before the West in organizing herself! Maybe this is applicable to himself! As usual Martin tried his best to explain facts and reality!
This is a conversation between different views well represented . I found it to be informative. The west can learn about community building. The east can learn about individual rights(so can the west)
he's educated in Singapore, a city state that still fondly celebrates its British colonial history, and its comprador insertion into the global capitalist system ("capitalism with Singaporean characteristics")
I think the title of the book has harmed China and compromised the safety of Chinese people living in western societies. Many western citizens are ignorant of east Asia, do not think critically and are easily influenced and manipulated by their media and politicians. Western society has an innate fear of east Asians as borne out by the 1882 American Chinese Exclusion Act, the 1923 Canadian Chinese Immigration Act, the White Australian Policy, New Zealand's head tax and the British ‘compulsory repatriation of undesirable Chinese seamen’ policy. For Britain, the US and the settler societies of Australia, Canada and New Zealand which practiced or were involved in imperialism, the word "rule" projects what they did to the rest of the world and which they fear that China might do to them. Fear of their own karma and the psycho-cultural fear of East Asians (the Yellow Peril) "rooted in medieval fears of Genghis Khan and the Mongol invasions of Europe, the first defeat of a European power by a East Asian nation in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) and Pearl Harbour lurk deep in the recesses of western minds and culture. The title of the book could had raised these phantoms to life and gave rise to the incessant China bashing by western politicians and media and the anti Asian hate in their societies. Hopefully, Martin Jacques can find a title that could allay western fears in his next book.
Don't understand the Avatar name you gave to yourself " Penang Rubbish". BTW I was from Penang, a fabulous Place, in particular, to grow up and for some retire. The title of Jacques' book is given by the publisher and he does not object to it, the decision is made in order to sell his book, purely a marketing move. You have a point in your argument but the publisher is there to make money.
Whatever he writes at this point (and which is reflected in his title choice) is comprehensive and incessant flattery of the CPC and how it is totally innovative and infallible in the end, whereas the west is in certain decline and can accomplish nothing. The video segments he had regularly recorded for China Daily and the Global Times, and no doubt paid well for, deliver the goods. So to the CPC he’s found a lucrative way to make himself useful, and if he doesn’t actually believe his rhetoric, I guess he can’t be called an idiot can he?
@@philg4116 3.He wrote the book more than 10 years ago. Look at how the West handled Covid 19, irrespective if there was a cover-up or not at the beginning. I have some answers to your last question « what should we learn as western people from the China rise in term of structural change in our system ? » We should have long term vision from our leader like China with their 5 years, 10 years plans. We should have a strong political power to combat the oligarchy or plutocracy. Strong power of the one for the sake of all. No need to read Martin’s next book :)
Unity won’t affect/impact the diversity and creativity. All these 3 elements can be inter-related but also completely separated. They are not a black and white choices.
At 32:18 E.D. said that Britain initiated the industrial revolution and that Japan benefited from it. Then he said that USA lead the digital revolution and that China benefited from it. What he failed to mention was that during the Song era China invented gunpowder, the compass, paper etc which the west benefited from it as well! To me this E.D. is a "political identity" (proxy bad actor). I did not even finish the whole program because of the biased opinions of E.D.
Martin was in London but his understanding of China was deep. Emmanuel was right there in Beijing but your knowledge of China was shallow. Are you the Western World? Are you still a slave of your Western colonizers? Don't know who is more judgemental.
I like your interview in the style of a debate, it is good to hear some contradictions about the mighty rise of China and the decline of Western world, the main thesis of Martin Jacques.
4:08 “History started with its own domination of the world” He is just so wrong here. Classical history is well studied and is in western culture. Just look how many famous “sword & sandals” films there are. Christianity was started in those classical times and judism on which it is based goes back to Ancient Egyptian times.
48:43 I do no believe China will be « a formidable cultural player in the world » . Confucius and Taoïsme will not ever take over Descartes, Plato, Christian culture in the Western countries .
Simple, China is about rule by its working people. The West is migrating from imperial rule by monarchs, to imperial rule by the wealthy who support the monarch system and eventually to rule by the working class. Nobody is there yet, but Karl Marx saw it coming. Military force will always be required when one group of humans need to take advantage of the others.
Communism is the future. People imagine Communism in terms of the USSR, a very great country, but a country which grew up under hugely difficult political conditions. A backward semi-eudal country of massive size which had to face the First World War, Civil War and then the Second World War after which it was under massive economic and ideological attack. That is over. Temporarily. China which is far from perfect is yet far ahead of the West. In Latin America, the pink tide was pushed back but the tide has turned again. Bolivia is showing the way.
The interviewer is biased in favour of the west. With a name like that is it surprising ? He has not even once mentioned India when he was talking about China’s neighbours.
Excellent Mr Daniel for hosting a thought provoking debate and tackling this Mentality of 'Century of Humiliation'--When we should be looking forward for a better world and the Chinese should take as much leadership in the world as they ought to(in a consensus way) , help create a congenial ,coherent world where we can take actions in co-ordinated way to tackle the real problems facing the world ,rather than still continuing to live as a plundering/conquering/killing ,cyclically unpredictable ,horrible human existence , over and over again ,as we know for most of our past human existence. Dropping this Grouse of 'Century of Humiliation' is important for a better world and also for China itself as more engagement of all countries in a collaborative way will enhance the wellbeing and prosperity of all. Humans have over the Millenia, caused harm to other humans because of 'human nature', we should see that these human impulses are curbed to create a better world. Human should stop falling victim to the repetition of history. China can contribute as much as other nations, may be in more ways due to its current upliftment. China can contribute to break these cycles of history that humans have fallen victim to which has thrown the human kind into horrible backwardness and 'Hell'. It is pathetic to listen to people who just talk only about the short-term prosperity and who talk about state-craft in the here-and-now--’we have arrived’ mentality --feeling of greatness without really putting things into the right perspective --where one considers humans as one family.After-all we are mortals and we die natural death in 80 or 100years(may be Gene Editing can extend it for a while longer). What if we can ,being philosophical ,stop this human tendency for 'Might is Right'--what if this is inculcated in schools--but again this has all to be done in the context of human nature--No soft-power without hard power--so who hold the hard power should also advocate for Softer values to prevail and be the guiding light for living ,while the Hard power is always kept ,prepared on standby for any one Rogue who is waiting to destroy the peaceful way of life and living of the Globe. 😅
The 90s and 00s are much more confident. Couple that with the weaknesses of the western political system exposed by COVID-19 and this youngest generation all but rejects the western model as something *not* to be emulated.
Thumbs up for Martin, down for the interviewer
Chinese unified society and system is very strong, effective and efficient, curbing this pandemic in China really shows everything.

@@alexanderclaylavin 24/7 brainwashing obviously works for you.
What?? I think the reason is quite clear. It's bcoz America moved it's factories there. Then the Chinese gvt guaranteed labor by forcing its people

Nobody outside Mainland China can think how strong and resilient it is!
Until it is shown how well and terrific it can manage the pandemic of a huge nation of 1.41 billions people!
With strong unity and stability, and its economy more or less remains intact and expanded 3%, for which every country the World over has shrunk significantly!

Emmanuel Daniel is a clown! Martin Jacques outsmarted him!
Martin does not know why China should westernize its gouvernance. Emmanuel Daniel did the job to highlight the benefits of western system.
@@redbarontheace5589 Whatever! Continue your delusional views, the West is in decline and has little to offer in terms of governance, especially their incompetent handling of Covid-19 pandemic.
I'm witnessing a fool interviewing a wise man. So embarrassing. The moment interviewer opens his mouth i know at once hes an amateur. Its an insult to Martin Jacques. 🇸🇬
Let the scholar speak. The interviewer goes and on and on in halting English.
Century of humiliation is just a constant reminder to all Chinese people that they should never end up in the same situation again. China must always be strong and advance in technology so that no other countries can ever show up at the door with guns pointing threatening.
*The worst interview ever on every level!! Emmanuel Daniel should be avoided like the plague! 0 out of a 100!*
China currently is only a 200lb gorilla. Please don't turn it into a 2000 ton godzilla.
I think if China turns into a 2000 ton gorilla, that's based on their capabilities. The only thing anybody else can do is whether or not their constant poking will leave them with an angry 200 lbs gorilla.
@@questworldmatrix can't agree more and all these poking is totally unnecessary.
Hey, write your own creamy titled book and then compare. Your audacity to critique Martin is beyond ludicrous.... full stop
Thousands Thanks So Much to the Ever BRILLIANT Mind of Mr MARTIN JACQUES
for sending a gentle reminder to the host slave of Emm Daniel.
Salute prof .Martin J. Genius analysis👏👍👍👍
This is a conversation between different views well represented . I found it to be informative. The west can learn about community building. The east can learn about individual rights(so can the west)
Wetern domination is over, that's all.
he's educated in Singapore, a city state that still fondly celebrates its British colonial history, and its comprador insertion into the global capitalist system ("capitalism with Singaporean characteristics")
There was ample opportunity to prepare and tackle the situation properly, but the West failed, especially the US and UK. I am ashamed of homeless people sleeping in the street. The state of infrastructures in America and the UK.
I can still see the film clips of Chinese on their bicycles, with their little red-book. So do not mention the CPC because it is within our power to solve our problems. Instead the Supreme Court declares that Corporation are individuals.

@Peter Plum (共和国网军上校 李下士) Let them see, this is beyond a joke. Flint,Michigan water crisis has not been resolved, seven years and counting.
What a horrible host. Never again!
Martin was in London but his understanding of China was deep. Emmanuel was right there in Beijing but your knowledge of China was shallow. Are you the Western World? Are you still a slave of your Western colonizers? Don't know who is more judgemental.
Untouchable is untouchable
I like your interview in the style of a debate, it is good to hear some contradictions about the mighty rise of China and the decline of Western world, the main thesis of Martin Jacques.
i’m pro china, but i find Emmanuel open minded, willing to listen to what contradicts his “bias”, a really precarious character in this age
Good pottery … I busted into laughter
How about- "When China leads the World".
An appeaser. Pure and simple.
"The education level here, ironically, is very, very good" - the reporter's credibility was lost for me right there.
You guys talk highly about the west. Peoples don't have a choice to choose. Peoples are influences by forces.
It's so cringe when smart, intelligent people can not admit when they have been wrong.
You mispelled israyal
What a joke, wait he has an Indian background. A colonial poodle.
W.to. Which means world trading organization
The interviewer is biased in favour of the west. With a name like that is it surprising ? He has not even once mentioned India when he was talking about China’s neighbours.
Terrible interviewer/ full of bias
