      Hi Brian, thanks... Great to hear that your son has found fly fishing and fly tying and that you are re-visiting it, I hope that you both have many hours together by the water...

    Please consider doing a blindfold challenge with the Black Pennell. That would be fun. Davie did one and was enjoyable.

    What an immaculate final presentation. What have you used to varnish the head, Barry? It is SO competition perfect.

    New Tier of trout flies. I have so much trouble getting the legs to lay back correctly. You have helped. Looks like I’m too sparse. And crowding the eye somewhat. Will keep trying. Thanks.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith, Well you are not alone, its a very common problem, but if you use the technique shown in this video your legs should be good. With crowding the eye. Before and while tying try and pay extra attention to the proportions of the fly, if you get these right you should always have enough room to finish neatly. If you wish to improve your tying may I suggest: th-cam.com/video/mVLof0uXqyE/w-d-xo.html Good luck!

    This is among a handful of patterns that are always in my box in a few sizes. We have a few black-phase pheasant around here. The tail fibers have a very nice blue-green sheen. I also do this with a slight variation using very tiny melted mono eyes (6-8# test uv green or red) with good results. If we can figure a way to securely get your mailing address to me, I’ll send you a black tail next opportunity.

    Great video Barry. Would that fly being all black be a cormorant? And I see you have been using the petitjean bobin holder for some time now. Could you give me your thoghts on it sir?

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dominique, Merci! No a cormorant is a small UK still water streamer with a black marabou wing, th-cam.com/video/v3vL1dMIYYw/w-d-xo.html You either love them or hate them. I love my Petitjean bobbin holders! But you have to know how to use them, this only comes from using them over a long period of time.

    Barry,
    I'm sure you get most of your supplies in the U.K. but is there a place in the U.S. you would recommend that might have as close to the same supplies you have?
    Thought I would let you know this bit of fun, I have been seeing my personal physician here for about 5 years now and last month when I was waiting in a exam room for him to give me my yearly going over I was watching one of your latest tying vids when he walked in, he saw it and we struck up a conversation about Fly Fishing and it turns out he is an avid Fly Fisherman himself, we got into talking about certain fish we caught last season and I asked him about tying flys well he doesn't have the interest to tie but he loves to fish so I tyed him several flys that work really well for me here and gave them to him just this last week. You would have thought I gave him a new Rod or Something the way he reacted...he was so happy and amazed. We have a few times this spring when he and I will have time off so we can meet up and can go fishing together.
    Just goes to show Fly Fishing is one language that bridges all gaps.

      Hey Randy, thanks! Thats just great how we connect through fishing... You should try and get him tying! The supplier in the US that carries just about everything I use is Hareline Dubbing, if its worth having, they have it! www.hareline.com
