I think it was absolutely the right call not putting your pov in the video. Even ignoring the practical problems you mentioned, it made it feel more like a horror game from the viewer perspective not having you in it. That said though, love this peak behind the curtain in a separate vid.
I think if he wanted to add his POV, it could've been at the end after announcing player times. Like a bonus blooper reel but it's clips of best moments from his perspective.
I think it could have been really cool to include my POV if I tailored it more for the video. Like making a "Monster vision" in the same way the player had the first person flashlight POV. But I think that would have been trickier to mesh into the vibe of the end video because it contrasts with the kind of scary kind of campy vibe. Like I ultimately think there really isn't a correct answer
Dang, sad to hear that the video took so long and costed so much. I know that projects that are so difficult aren't sustainable, but I will say that I loved the video so much.
@@Fir Understandable.. But on the other hand.. the more you do it the better you get at it and then it's faster to make them so they cost less! :p (yes, trying to convince you to do more of these haha)
It's funny that CJ knew the whole time yet he appeared to be the most tense the whole time I watched the video. Poo didn't know you were playing, but he also wasn't really that scared; CJ knew, but he looked legit spooked the whole time 😂
As Fir stated the level kinda felt “empty” and these were just a few things I tried to do to make the level have more to it It was hard working around the limitations of just a Mario walking
Fir, these videos are both great. Doing them separately was absolutely the right call. The escape room video made it feel like a very super fun experience, even Poo said Hide n Seek would be fun there. Each escape room has been getting better and better. It's all iterative so just keep up the great work
I liked keeping your POV out of the main vid. I think it added to the atmosphere, and the whole time, I wasn't entirely sure if you were really controlling luigi or not. I think a bit at the end where you showed off what your POV kind of looked like at the end would have been cool, but I think the tension was good in this case, because the video still felt mostly fun just with your conversations, especially with some things like the end of Poo's run.
I honestly am a huge fan of the fact that you don’t have the ability to turn invisible, I kinda hate how so many horror things just have entities that appear/disappear when you look at them, I think it’s so much better to have them turn around and walk away, or already be standing there.
Makes sense it's over budget, but damn the world needs to have some crazy and cool stuff. I wish you find a way to make more of such stuff in the most comfortable and achievable way
I know you keep mentioning how you wish you could have done more, but both this video and the original came out so well for us viewers! As someone who has organized huge projects and watched them executed, I know how easy it is to self analyze and be hyper critical of the work displayed. But as an audience member with 0 idea of the potential routes taken, I think this was one of the most fun videos you've released so far and super creative! Always cheering for you and keep up the solid work 🎉
Honestly speaking, there’s a point early in development at which you have to be happy with something being a bit of a tech demo. This whole project was, in reality, kind of destined to be a demonstration of the idea of first-person SMO just due to the constraints on what needed to be made for it. In terms of the actual design, it was never going to match up to custom levels like the other escape rooms, which were made in the basic SMO style rather than using all-new first-person stuff like this one. But that’s fine. It’s the first one. You’ve made one now, and you can make more sometime if you end up wanting to. For my part, I think this whole idea was cool enough to carry the first level like this one, and you and everyone else involved in making it ought to be proud of the job you’ve all done. I’d love to see what you’d do with these tools in the future, if you find yourself wanting to do something like this again.
I think it was the right call to include your POV separate to keep the suspense 😄 I'm loving seeing the BTS of how you brought this all together. It's such a massive project - kudos to you & your team for all the hard work! Really impressive stuff! First person mode in SMO is INSANE you should definitely celebrate it
I think this video was absolutely top tier and not showing your pov fit the style perfectly and really made the video especially when poo finally realized it was you as Luigi
Ok back to watch this now - THIS IS SUCH A COOL BTS video! Loving how you’re explaining the sound effects and the bushes and the range that Smant can see the static. Love this making of stuff. Seeing the old build was cool and the Poo playthrough from your POV was even funnier
The video turned out pretty good, I really wish I could have pulled some things together better, but this was such a challenge and change from what I was used to doing, and working around the limitations of not having cappy made it pretty hard This map was COLOSSAL, and if I had to redo this it give input, less is more I would have scrapped the forest concept and made like a psychic ward or hospital instead Anyway, sorry that this maybe didn’t pan how you wanted but it’s fun to see people giving a positive reception still
i thought the video and the mod both turned out great! honestly it means a lot to me (and i'm sure to a lot of other people) to hear that you'd roll with it even if it's not the most profitable idea. but i still hope it does well enough to make back a decent amount at least, because you definitely deserve that :'D awesome to see the behind the scenes too, i was wondering what the level would look like normally lol
huh i legit asssumed that luigi ghost is just a random encounter to make it spooky but knowing Fir himself posing as the ghost, stalking the players for the entire round is far scarier, knowing that he can kill them at anytime lol
Could see this as a FNAF gag where a player is locked in their **”Dev Room”** and must block the others from capturing the moon The others are limited on vision, movement speed, and walls but can find ways to maneuver around the security guard to get the moon and win While the Guard has to stand right in front of each entrance to block/kill the intruders, can see specific areas of the map to track, and can set off death traps in front of the entrances to prevent camping in front of the doorways The guard must last for 5 minutes for them to win and perhaps get a *Kill All players* Trap/Monster as a reward
It was a really great video. I would love to see the "horror" pov mode for a hide and seek video where the hiders switch to that pov when the seekers start to seek with only 1 or 2 seekers each round since the hiders can't run
23:46 honestly I thought CJ was just cursing you (the level designer), not that he was fully aware that you were the one chasing him and thus cursing you (the player)
Tbh, I have become much more of a Vod watcher than a video watcher because the jump cuts etc. aren’t really my vibe anymore. So I came to this video before opening up the actual video. I didn’t know it was an escape room !!! Your escape room videos were so awesome. I’m now gonna go watch that video before I come back here
By the way Fir, the Luigi model in the maze is from the crane minigame from the N64 Mario Parties. You get turned into a doll with only the ability to shake, and that's the funny model it gives you.
I freaking love behind the scenes content like this, but I 100% understand why it wasn't included in the main video. The vibe is much more silly and educational and wouldn't have fit.
Lmao I didnt believe you were Luigi until I clicked on this video. I straight up thought you were bluffing and it was AI. Well played Fir... well played 😁
Smant being so oblivious.. would have loved to see your POV of cj's recording haha since he totally knew it was you and kept calling you out through the entire run EDIT: oh nevermind.. you showed cj's and poo's BTS videos afterwards
I don't know if you could make an eventual return on investment by reusing the assets and techniques since they're kinda specific to this. It might be good for other escape room bits though. Like a single room of an entirely different escape room could utilize a forced 1st person camera. Or, if simple to innovate, make the flashlight mod do the Mo-Eye (The statue with the glasses, however it's spelled) vision instead of lighting for a specific room instead of having to use the capture, and keep the limited range so it's different. Like instead of how the capture would show the entire path at once, the modified flashlight shows 5 steps ahead and forces the player to slow down if they want to play it safe.
Kinda like those levels in 3D world? I know there was a ghost level with a similar idea, and a few of the bowsers fury shines utilized a blue surface only seen up close.
@@StarBeam500 Maybe he can utilize the shader idea for an impromptu hot or cold mechanic to guide the players? Or maybe for pick a pipe, instead of Mario turning towards the pipe, the screen has a green tint when he's right next to or standing on the correct pipe. He's already paid for these tools, there has to be something else he can use them for right? Even as silly as it would be, maybe use the static shader for seekers for a "spooky" hide n seek?
It was for sure intresting. I know you may be very slightly upset at the video because more could have been done, but it still made for an entertaining video and very unique video.
32:00 Just an idea for the future, but you could ask a modder to toggle your costume to the invisible cap when you press a keybind. That shouldn't be too hard to code in.
Honestly I don't think you should have your PoV in the original video for both the reasons you said and because it'd break up the vibe and flow of the game turning horror. I think you made the right choice.
Nice, pretty interesting video! If you do more escape rooms in the future (I'm sure you will) it would be nice to have a "how I built the rooms" bit? with trial and error and whatnot of what worked, and what didn't, and either got fixed or removed entirely
I loved the video but didn’t realize what it was at first because of the title and thumbnail. I thought it was a challenge run with shaders and special effects
i feel like if you're turning around and there is someone there... You'd be relieved it is Mario. But i'm not sure, what in the Nintendo Universe would be scarier.
i think it would be hilarious if fir just start like spinpound roll cancelling towards them randomly and started doing crazy movement(not for like the first few times just once in a blue moon) but it makes sense that he didn't cuz this mod actually looked and played super well and it would ruin the immersion
I'm really surprised you didn't use LunaKit in your mod setup. I know you have an external interface, but sticking some things in the game directly and gaining keyboard & mouse support for things like raycasting to trigger events/effects sounds useful. Maybe support bookmarking warp locations so you could jump around the map without dev pipes.
I feel like a major drawback to the overall quality of the final product is that for most of CJ's POV, most of his commentary isn't even so much him being scared, but him just incoherently swearing AT you, as opposed to the horror elements in the level. Which ultimately, meant he was right on the money about the whole gimmick, but for the wrong reason. I mean, by contrast Smant didn't even know a Luigi was IN the level until almost the halfway point into his run, because he was trying not to get lost. Poo's POV was arguably the scariest, because he actively saw & noticed the most things throughout the overall run.
I loved the horror video and this too but the pronounciation of Sanae is killing me... (unless the person is not named after kochiya sanae and is actually pronounced Sunay)
You could include your pov and have a small different coloured frame around the video for each player (like how it is in amethysts chained together smo vid)
You can still make the video profitable. All you have to do is keep using a lot of the work that was put into in other videos. Spread the cost, yeah? Just makes thousands of these videos and the cost is basically nothing. Surely you can make thousands of these videos, yeah?
