    I'm a perfect case study in what happens when you lose estrogen at menopause. I've done weight-bearing exercise since my teens, drank my milk every day, ate healthy and took vitamin D, didn't smoke or drink. My GP AND my husband, who is a radiologist, were both convinced that my bone density would be just fine so I was denied a bone density scan when I turned 50.
    By the time I turned 52, I had seen your videos so I INSISTED on a DEXA scan. Guess what? Years of loss of estrogen have resulted in a diagnosis of full-on osteoporosis. Calcium, exercise, vitamin D, healthy eating, etc. did nothing to reduce my bone loss.
    Fortunately, thanks to you Dr Barbie, I also INSISTED on HRT six months ago so am hopeful that I can stop any more bone loss.
    See you in December for my consult with you!! And thank you SO MUCH for everything you are doing for women's education. XXOO

    I am terrified to lose my estrogen! Doctors are terrified to prescribe it. Because of my fibroids and incessant bleeding they might pull the plug! I have an appointment in December. I am looking for GYNs who prescribe estrogen and there are hardly any even the ones listed with the NAMS. I thought I might have it but I could not get an appointment too get a DEXA until I broke a bone. I told them I was willing to pay cash they would not even take that which is odd since they are so money hungry. ! I wish women were given estrogen at menopause automatically. My friends who are nurses think I am crazy for taking it! Thank you for this education! I wish every doctor who deals with post menopausal women could or would see this!

      (PS Doctors are not generally money hungry - my husband is a doctor - it's more about the hippocratic oath. There's so little education that most of them are convinced that estrogen is dangerous thanks to the findings of the 2001 WHI study. My husband was convinced of the same until I started showing him Dr Barbie's videos!!)

    I cannot thank you enough for your videos and education for all women. Because of your videos detailing risk factors, I got and paid for (out -of-pocket) a DEXA scan at the end of 2019. Sure enough at age 56 I had osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hip and wrist. Because of COVID, it took until July 2020 before I started treatment. I wish any one of my doctors from age 40 on had told me about osteoporosis and the devastating effects it has (potentially) on ones’s life. I too encourage women to get a DEXA scan. It isn’t easy to find a place that will do one without a doctor referral, but keep trying. I had to drive to another state (about 2 hours) to get it. Best spent two hours of my life. I pray that with treatment I will not be a fracture statistic. Thank you again!!!!

    My husband is using testosterone (injection) to help with his bone loss. He has severe osteoporosis and spinal fractures. He takes Forteo also. Does estrogen affect a man's bone mass? We have no idea why this happened at his age, 68. It has been devastating to his mobility and very painful.
    Thank you so much for all the wonderful information you put out to try and help us prevent this horrible disease. I have osteopenia in one of my hips, somewhere around -1.5, spine is still in the +. I didn't know anything much about the DEXA scan until I watched your videos. My doctor told me my DEXA was fine, all good. I had been on 0.25 mg of estrogen for hot flashes. I asked her to bump it up to 1 mg and she would not do it, she said 0.375 is as high as she'll go. So she's afraid of estrogen. Will this dose prevent further bone loss? I'm 9 years post-menopausal.

    What an excellent video, Dr Taylor. Thank you so very much. 🌸 It makes me feel sad and angry that women’s postmenopausal health and well-being are not valued enough in our society. I didn’t have this information when there was still time to possibly prevent major bone loss. I recently had a DEXA Scan thanks to the education from you, but it already showed advanced osteopenia and early osteoporosis. (I’m 56 y.o.) The endocrinologist I saw as a result, talked about my Z-score! Thanks to the education from you, I cut him off and told him that the T-scores were the ones important to me. I would have had no clue about this without the education from you, Dr Taylor. (Actually, I wouldn’t have had the bone scan to begin with!)
    I have a question about the estradiol blood level necessary to prevent further bone loss. I’ve been on a twice-weekly patch (0.05 mg) for the past 2 years, beginning one year post menopause (plus a progesterone pill). The endocrinologist ordered a blood test to assess my estradiol level and it was at 26. Is this a sufficient level to ensure no more bone loss due to estrogen loss, Dr Taylor? This was the level towards the end of the patch’s life, with about 10 more hours to go before switching to a new one.

    • @MenopauseTaylor

      C M,
      It's not that easy. You are taking the lowest minimal dosage for preventing bone loss. But if you are still having g ANY symptoms of estrogen deficiency, that's your very own body TELLING you it's not enough.
      If you have a consultation with me, I will make sure you go about this the proper way. You SHOULD NOT be using lab testing of hormone levels!

    Same story Lara! I feel pretty let down and more than a little angry at the medical profession, that after following the healthy living lifestyle, no one mentioned that I was a candidate for osteoporosis. When I enquired about going on HRT, although I wasn't experiencing any hot flashes or brain fog [my mother [deceased] had been on HRT for around 20 years and swore by it], I was told it would increase my chances for breast cancer. I explained no breast cancer, or any cancer in my family, but we did have a history of bone degeneration and heart disease. You would have thought that might raise a few eyebrows and create a little cause for concern. I finally got on HRT by going private , but it was too late, I had already got osteoporosis of the spine. A DXA scan at age 65 revealed the extent of the bone degeneration. Of course it was then that the experts piled in with drug options... big pharma? To think all of this could have been avoided with a simple scan. They give mammograms and cervical smear tests, so why not add a DXA scan to the regime. You have to wonder.
    Thanks Dr Taylor you are a font of information and without your videos I wouldn't be nearly as well informed about my body. I wish I had found you years ago [btw I found you via Angie on Hot and Flashy, so kudos to her too!]

I was still shocked that it is not available until a woman is 65yrs the damage is done by then. Surely it would be much cheaper in the long run for governments to do this simple screening rather than have people breaking bones then needing surgeries and perhaps long periods of rehab and possibly full time care. I started my periods at 10 and continued until I was 54, actually they would not stop, regular as clockwork. I did not have hot flashes, just constant heat. I had experienced horrendous, debilitating period pains for all those years and I was told 'just wait until you have children, far more painful' I decided not have children! The pill helped to a certain extent for 20 years, but I was advised to come off it. I tried to get help for the pain so many times without luck. I could not wait for menopause and to take HRT, even though women at the time were advised not to. My thinking at the time was, 'okay then, I'll have a short sweet life'. HRT stopped my periods, thank goodness.I am now 63, but at forty, I looked twenty ( great, but a double-edged sword) I believe that I must have had a hormone problem, on good days I was hyperactive, but I was never given blood tests, or taken seriously. I am so much happier now....no pain! Onwards and upwards! 🤩

    Beautifully said with such a a great personality and brains. Thank you for the invaluable and informative videos. Is there any benefit to getting the dexa scan before day 1 of "post menopause"... Iow during perimenopause?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if you have other risk factors for osteoporosis that are present before you lose your estrogen at post-menopause, you should definitely get one sooner. Otherwise, getting one when you become post-menopausal should give you a baseline for monitoring bone loss in the future.

    I started taking D3, K2 MK4, and coral calcium when I could clearly see I was developing osteoporosis, and my teeth no longer felt tight. I was developing pockets of bone loss and gum disease. Within 1 month I suffered an acute kidney stone attack.
    Doctors like to blame patients. You're brushing your teeth too hard. You're not eating right, etc...when in fact you can't control what's happening. I've brushed my teeth the same way for 56 years. Was eating healthier than I had ever eaten when my cholesterol was high. Now I have a whole ritual I go through just to prevent my gums from receding more, and no matter how much I eat, I don't gain MUSCLE mass.

    Can women who have had total endometrial ablation but not a hysterectomy take only estrogen or do they still requiere progesterone to prevent uterine cancer? Thanks!

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your uterine ablation was complete (meaning it destroyed every morsel of your uterine lining), you do not need progesterone. You may take estrogen all by itself.

    Nice outfit this education is really benefiting my life I have learned so much about current and long term health and so thankful to find this channel just as I approached my 50th year of life. After raising a darling beagle on really good food 14yrs and all this hormone stuff my husband and I don't want to spay our big strong puppy tied to my belt with all this prevention info and daily puppy training I can remain strong and enjoy the park or a nice walk today as well as 6-8-10 years from now with this amazing big strong dog and one of her future puppies. I work and play hard and don't want to avoid doing some things I enjoy. I'm also learning how to maintain muscle as I understand some women loose that as well. Thank you

    Thank you, you are amazing!!! I just discovered you and your videos and I want to become educated as possible to have a healthy as possible, rest of my life. I am 52 years old and still menstruating every month, but I want to know when I should start taking HRT to prevent hormone deficient diseases. I have my yearly gynecological exam next week. During my exam, should I ask for blood work to assess my hormone levels?

      Debra,
      Welcome "Menopause University!" If you start at video 1 and watch them all in order, you will understand everything. Do not watch them randomly. It will sabotage your entire menopause education.
      The very best thing you can do is have a consultation with me BEFORE going to your doctor. I will make it so much easier for you and school you in precisely how to get what you want, and help you avoid pitfalls. You do not need any reproductive hormone testing for a consultation with me. And it's really better not to get them (which I'll explain in the consultation).

    After watching this video, with visible osteoporosis and trees that need planting and nobody to help me dig and hack through shale, I'm scared to death. One tree is in a pot in the ground, and it has been there in that pot long enough to send its taproot down. If I don't get that tree out now, it'll crack the foundation. Scared.

    Dr Taylor, how can I know whether I am a candidate for continuous HRT or not? I am 38 year old and it has been 6 months since my last natural period. I am taking cyclical HRT since last 4 months ( both estrogen and progesterone for 21 days and 7 days gap every 28 days). The problem is, that menopausal symptoms return on the estrogen free days and my life becomes a hell. I requested my menopause specialist for continuous HRT, but she said that I can't have it because I am not post menopausal yet. ☹️.

    I am going to see a gyno in January or February to get a lifetime prescription for Estrogen. I will ask her at what age a bone scan is done and see if I can get one done. The gyno I choose was on NAMS site as a meno expert, so, I will see....
    Moral of the video is we'll fix you when you're broken vs when we can prevent it from happening. Perhaps 50 should be age for bone scan.
    Loving your outfit today.
    Suggestion: can we get two or more videos a week, if possible?

      Thank you so much for wanting more of this education. I actually crate these videos about 2 years in advance. I'm currently working on the ones you'll see in the fall of 2022. So, popping out more than one a week would not faze me in the least. But my staff might be a bit overwhelmed from the standpoint of running my website and keeping up with all the social media.
