Thanks for this video. I drove out of Hendon garage for just over 3 years on route 13 only Golders Green to Aldwych, laterly with RML's. Happier and easier times.
My pleasure....did you ever get on the 113s or the Sunday duties on the 140?.......I allways wondered why Hendon had around 4 buses on the 140s on a Sunday.....
Some nice sounds there. What was that driver doing with his watering can? He wasn't topping up the radiator, seemed be sprinkling it over the engine. Looked like a scene from On the Buses there.
I used to ride on RM 2151 in East Ham as a child. This was after its stint on the short lived Shop-Linker service, LT plated over the speakers that they fitted to the SL vehicles. Some of the SL buses were sponsered by various shops and they played ad tapes whilst in service! Nice to know it survived after its use on the 36s at New Cross.
Soi Buakhao indeed it has! It makes an appearance every Christmas in the leading days doing tours around Norwich with a VR, often used for private hire as well, I’ll have to email you some photos shortly!
Soi Buakhao well I’d say keep an eye out for events at the East Anglia Transport Museum near Lowestoft, lots of stuff happens there with vintage buses! They have several old Eastern Counties stuff! Last event included a turn out of four Eastern Counties VR’s! The pubs are excellent too though🤣
Back in these days they were being withdrawn rapidly! I wish now i had filmed the other classes as well but i just concentrated on the Routemasters......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Your mind was in a completely different place. I say simply film what you're interested in at the time. You got us three ripper LT National clips no one else has posted. You achieved plenty.
Hi soi, great video, you certainly picked a nice day for filming, I went to Golders green to take some shots of the end of routemasters on route 13, what a busy terminus, I remember seeing SLT 56, at willesden garage as a boy, bus spotting, and was stunned by its modern design
You were lucky, being there for the start of Routemaster operation and again at the end, nearly 50 years later! Not many buses can claim that long a service history.....
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus The 2B! My favourite route, probably because it’s the first route I remember as a kid in Tulse Hill. Crystal Palace to Golders Green, and I think at one point it went further on to North Finchley. Remember the 2 as well, it was a shame they both got cut back to Baker Street. Love seeing the old footage though brings back memories.
A lot of routes used to run a long way, the 15s Richmond (Suns only) to East Ham, 52s Mill Hill to Victoria, 73 Stoke Newington to Teddington (Suns only). The 12's was the longest from Soth Croydon to Wembley, it had over 100 buses alloacted from around 5 different garages......the cutting routes up started in the late 80s to chop off the end of crew worked routes (OPO'ing the ends) and then in the 90s chopping them again as routes had garages in two different bus operating companies (like the 6s, 8's). This was in order to privitise the bus companies......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus oh my that sounds like what they're doing now in Sydney in preparation to fully privatise all our regions. They have already done two or three and one outside of Sydney that was government run.
The 28 was cut back whenLT were withdrawing RMs. A lot of RM routes had the ends chopped off and a new OPO route worked them, the Routesmasters eve more confine to Central London.
Did many have the AEC symbol visible on the front wheels by then? So annoying they were painted over a lot. I bet the independent front suspension helped handling. The MAN SL202s I drove handled like a sports car around sharp bends with their independent front end.
A lot of the AEC hubcaps has been replaced or painted over. Routemasters handle quite well, they have power steering and can be driven in full auto mode. Although they all drive different to one another, some neeed very little imput into steering while others need constant attention.
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus It was quite disconcerting if they didn't keep the steering fluid topped up. You could pull into a bus stop and the steering would suddenly go heavy, nearly end up mounting the kerb. I can remember turning left into a street and having to almost stand up to pull on the wheel because it went heavy.
The first 305 (around that mark) Routemasters had plain windows with air vents that allowed fresh air in (at the top of the glass) before LT decided to go with conventional drop down windows. The bodies were swapped between running units (what amounts to a chassis although actually 2 sub frames bolted to the body) upon overhaul at Aldenham Works as well asswapping reg numbers as well! Most Routemasters are 'ringers' due to LTs complex overhaul system. Look out for YT uploads called Overhaul, although showing RTs it was the same overhaul process.....
I wondered what the process was with the RMs at Aldenham as they don't have a chassis. They were really ahead of their time as I drove Scania low entry buses with a similar underframe arrangement called buggy format.
I often just listen to the videos of f Routemasters and it takes me back to being a child when my beloved ban and I used to ride them
My nan also took me out on the buses, Routemasters plus lots of RTS around then too....

Great footage, lovely sound of the RM engines. I'm guesing the driver and clippie was a close crew !!!!! :)
I imagine so, launching the contents of his watering can at her!

Especially as he was splashing his clippie with it!
Thanks for sharing
Very nice stuff! Been doing a lot of work here with the old RM2151! They’re great fun to be around!

Love it that you caught the 2B, 13 and 28 in one shot! This must have been shortly before the 2B was truncated to Baker St?
Yes,vin a year or two they mucked the 2 & 2B around and it was cut back
Do you know why the 102 had its own stand round the side?
Love the old NW London footage.
Amazing now to think the 2B and 28 made it all the way to Golders Green......

X - Westbourne Park Routemaster at 04.20. My main route was the 31s but I occasionally drove the 28s Golders Green to Wandsworth.
Yes, Wandswoth and Westbourne Park both worked the 28s back then......

Lovely, noticed a few people just leaning on railings passing the time of day out in the sun, fuck all on the telly no internet no sky just simpler.
And certainly nobody walking around with their heads stuck in a phone!!!!!
Watering his engine ? And his clippy....
Quite a happy crew, i wonder if she was his girl?.....
By the looks of their closeness he watered her on more than one occasion
I was just thinking I suspect they were more than just colleagues.
Why did some Routemasters have non opening front upper deck windows. Was this the very early buses going back to prototypes
