"It is because you will face some remarkable challenges in your time; it is because the Church has ceased to be in the eyes of men a mere cultural oddity in the Mountain West and is now, therefore, a global church-a light which can no longer be hid; it is because you have a rendezvous with destiny that will involve some soul stretching and some pain that I have chosen to speak to you tonight about the implications of two things we accept sometimes quite casually.
These realities are that God loves us and, loving us, has placed us here to cope with challenges which he will place before us. I’m not sure we can always understand the implications of his love, because his love will call us at times to do things we may wonder about, and we may be confronted with circumstances we would rather not face. I believe with all my heart that because God loves us there are some particularized challenges that he will deliver to each of us. He will customize the curriculum for each of us in order to teach us the things we most need to know. He will set before us in life what we need, not always what we like. And this will require us to accept with all our hearts-particularly your generation-the truth that there is divine design in each of our lives and that you have rendezvous to keep, individually and collectively.
God knows even now what the future holds for each of us. In one of his revelations these startling words appear, as with so many revelations that are too big, I suppose, for us to manage fully: “In the presence of God, . . . all things . . . are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before the Lord” (D&C 130:7). The future “you” is before him now. He knows what it is he wishes to bring to pass in your life. He knows the kind of remodeling in your life and in mine that he wishes to achieve. Now, this will require us to believe in that divine design and at times to accept the truth which came to Joseph Smith wherein he was reminded that his suffering would be “but a small moment” (D&C 121:7). I’d like to talk to you about some of those small moments that will come your way in life and that come to each of us.
Let me begin by reminding you that we so blithely say in the Church that life is a school, a testing ground. It is true, even though it is trite. What we don’t accept are the implications of that true teaching-at least as fully as we should. One of the implications is that the tests that we face are real. They are not going to be things we can do with one hand tied behind our backs. They are real enough that if we meet them we shall know that we have felt them, because we will feel them deeply and keenly and pervasively." - Neal A. Maxwell
Neal A. Maxwell was an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when this fireside address was given at Brigham Young University on September 1, 1974.

Father in Heaven bless, not for my pride, but for this man's efforts to overcome & learn what thou would have him learn. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!!

Elder Maxwell suffered from cancer. He came and spoke to our mission a few years before he died. And he would have chemotherapy in between talks because he talked twice to the mission. He asked the Lord, “Why did you give me cancer?” The Lord said to him, “I gave you cancer so that you may minister to the people with authenticity.” He’s one of the most eloquent speakers I have ever heard in the Church.

This is a great talk! I needed to hear Elder Maxwell remind me that It is God's will that should be done and not mine, especially if my will is not in sync with God's. Some times He will not remove our cups. Other times He will. In order for us to be like Him, we must be willing to submit to what He sees fit to inflict upon us as a child submits to his or her parents. I hope one day soon to have that level of righteousness.

if you can see it you can be it , through God all things are made possible . God will deliver to every men the true desires of his soul and if your desire is to be righteous there is no other being that can make it so other than God , Question now is how far can we walk with him before we stray again and how long it is before we seek him out again . though we reach for the world at times with one hands may we always cling to that Rod for in this time it is not only a matter of spiritual life and death but mortal life and death . cling to the rod, build upon the rock, fill thy lamp ,and prepare thy house ,for the wedding feast is nigh . God bless You in the Name of Jesus our King and Redeemer .

Having a unique condition of pain mimicking labor each month, I've learned how the Atonement has the power to make the pain bearable. Without my focus on Christ, I become unraveled and bedridden. When I've had church callings, the pain was taken away entirely only as I walked in the building. Amazing. . Glad to be reminded again for next week. I always enjoyed Maxwell's talks.
