I agree I'm playing BBb tuba and tenor trombone with trigger for my school bands (wind ensemble for tuba and wind symphony for trombone). I can still comfortably hit a B0 to a F4 on the tuba and a B1 to a C5 on trombone. Just takes a lot of practice on both every day.
Im an 18 year old Senior in high school who has been playing bassoon for 11 and a half years, and I have tried the bassoon double reed on tuba mix, and I can say with great assurance that it does in fact work. (so long as you're okay with only playing a few very low notes)
Thank you Trent for this and all your other videos as well! can always learn something new from watching ANY of your videos even if I've been playing low brass for more than ten years! I've copied a list of all your videos and have made a check list so can working on viewing each and every one of them in the many hours I am online each day! Thanks again for everything! Dan
"I'm actually surprised that an Australian has managed to use the internet... but perhaps he comes from a different country original." - Trent Hamilton 2017
A few questions for next time... 1) Do you ever intend to learn how to use valves properly? (Expecting another long rant in response to this one, lol) 2) Would you consider doing a video where you attempt to copy Phillip McCann's vibrato on cornet? 3) Do you agree that there's a strange kinship that exists between soppists (such as myself) and bass trombonists? It seems to me that the two psychotic figures in the band tend to get on very well, when not busy competing with each other volumewise... 4) Have you considered doing a video or two on practice materials (books, etc) and routines? (I have plenty of materials I could share or recommend if you wanted to do this). 5) What's the better use for an instrument that plays like crap - destruction (fun) or making it into a lamp?
I have played an O'Malley cimbasso for the past 2 years (natively 7 year tuba player) and it's been the most fun I've had playing low brass so far. Definitely pick one up if you get a chance or go to a shop and try it out. Pedal notes are so free.
haha! I love how this video gave me some good laughs. I have a question myself. Do you think there is any difference in sound between a silver plated brass instrument and a lacquer plate instrument? There's been this myth going around that silver plated instruments sound brighter and such. Just wanted your opinion
Hey Trent, I was just wondering when you were planning to make the video on the Bach model 37 and 72. I am a trumpet player and an owner of these instruments, so I'd love to see this video! I love the channel, keep it up!
Trent, I decided to ask you this question before seeing “Woodwind - A Brass Perspective,” uncertain of whether it was the kind of thing you could answer. But having now seen that video (and its complement), I see that it’s right up your alley. The question is, which brass instrument should I get? I play the “bassoon” (as featured in the previously-mentioned video, also known as a licorice stick). And the alto “bassoon,” and when in college several decades ago, the bass “bassoon.” I like instruments. I also marginally play the piano, the guitar, a Tibetan singing bowl, and a small practice bagpipe, which I only take out after 2 AM when rather intoxicated, to impress my also intoxicated guests who haven’t yet gotten the notion that it’s time to leave. We have a good laugh (they’re laughing WITH me, I assure you), and then everyone goes home. The following Monday of course I get the notice from the landlord and by end of week all is forgotten. So I have this idea that I want to play a brass instrument. I was at a sort of mixed jazzish-rockish kind of show a few months ago and what was notably lacking was a trombone. I tried to buy one on eBay then and there because I felt I was just the man to correct this situation, but I couldn’t remember my password to log in and the new phone was not being helpful. So I didn’t buy it. And just today, I had a rather conical-bore bugle IN MY CART on eBay when I watched your video review of same and immediately deleted said item from cart, leaving only some other item which I don’t need. So, serious question. If you were such a person as I, and you figured you had enough time left on this planet to (amongst other of life’s activities) learn how to marginally make something akin to music on one brass instrument, which would it be, and why? My budget starts at zero, but I am willing to negotiate. I’m now thinking euphonium. Am I getting warm?
Have you ever considered creating brass ensemble that features the instruments you have collected over the years? If not, you should. I'd go to see a performance of that.
Thanks for your videos, Trent. That brass music in your intros; is that available to the public? And...all my adult life I've struggled with a Selmer B flat radial trumpet, probably manufactured around 1969 - it's been a love/hate relationship, though in recent years increasingly enjoyable...any thoughts on radial trumpets? it must be an idea that did not catch on....
@@TrentHamilton Yes, the valves are mounted somewhat like the pistons in a WWII vintage fighter plane. If the trumpet had about fifty valves they would make up a complete circle. With only three valves the unparallel arrangement is not very obvious; it would take a more accomplished musician than I to feel a difference in the valves' orientation compared to a "standard" trumpet. Nevertheless, I think it''s a good quality trumpet; I paid $400 for it in 1971. A while back I did a Google search about radial trumpets; as I recall I came up with one well used one that was going for $800 or so.
What’s it like to be a bandmaster of a Salvation Army band, does it bring you closer to the band then previously when playing other instruments in the South Wellington Band. I go to Birmingham Citadel and I really enjoy band and I like to conduct. What’s some good advice to conduct a SA band?
ive heard that one should brush his/her teeth before playing trumpet. i guess it is to keep inside of the trumpet clean but i dont know if this is the real answer or not. what do you think?
Sir Hamilton, I bought my first trumpet a week ago. Do you (or anyone else in the comment section for that matter) recommend any good beginner trumpet books? maybe one that teaches finger position with the score? keep it up love your videos!
If someone is a great at the French horn I don't mind, but if someone, or most, suck I would have to drop kick both the person and horn, and that goes for all woodwind instruments too
I like it. I'm not very good at it, but I still like playing one. Maybe it's just that there aren't any cheap ones, bought new? Or if they are, they're probably not very playable. Second hand prices can be quite reasonable though.
How they're made - and not much else... One-piece is made from one piece, two -piece is made from two pieces hammered together into one (and you can almost always see the join). Having played the exact same profile made both ways, it didn't make any noticeable difference .
I mean, is not that you need to change all your 3 piston hand movement, play with your left hand, and tune in perfect pitch, i mean there is no reason to hate french horns
okay so i know that you "hate" woodwinds, but what about saxophone? i know that it falls under woodwind family, but its also made out of brass and very loud. #excellencecomesthroughvolume
4:32 "You either want to be a bass trombonist or a disappointment to your parents." I'm laughing so hard I can't see.
my gosh the amount of sarcasm in this video is amazing 😂😂
Trent this is legitimately the best video I have seen on TH-cam for about 6 months... The savageness is real. Thanks and keep it up!
"I probably won't learn French Horn; I value my dignity"
rip tenor tromobonist
I almost cried at that as a tenor trombonist
tromboner
“I drove over a trumpet”
*All the mellos thank you good sir*
7:35 - I'm rolling on the floor laughing my ass off
Lmao the sass levels are insane
why does Trent hate woodwind so much. I personally don't play a woodwind (I play piano and trombone) but I don't hate woodwind. 😐
I don't hate woodwind. I'm just poking fun for the purpose of entertainment.
Trent Hamilton ok thx for the clarification 👻
Yup he is lonely he hates them
4:30 Oh trust me....
you can do both
I agree I'm playing BBb tuba and tenor trombone with trigger for my school bands (wind ensemble for tuba and wind symphony for trombone). I can still comfortably hit a B0 to a F4 on the tuba and a B1 to a C5 on trombone. Just takes a lot of practice on both every day.
bruh
I'm a tenor trombonist, but I still laughed.🤣
"Excellence comes through volume!"
I want to have that on a t-shirt!!
I've been deciding between Bass and Tenor Trombone and this video really helped me decide.
"I value my dignity" why other brass players refuse to try horn xD
Thank you, Trent, I did have an evening.
Thanks Trent, I am actually having quite an evening!
Spitting into the wind............ I never heard that, that’s cool!
7:34 absolute gold

What do you think of the strings section? Frankly I think they should rub brass instead of rosin on their strings.

You have a gift with the subtle jab lol and the deadpan plus timing is spot on
One of hte funniest Q&As I've ever seen/heard. You're da masta!!
comedy genius
"Excellence comes through volume" if i should ever get a tattoo, this will be written all over my back 😂
You should do a video on cheap plastic bugles
Lol that's oddly specific
cheap bugle plastic?
A few questions for next time...

That was a great woodwind video lmao
4:59 get rekt Australia
Im an Aussie, yet still laughed a Trent's comment about our internet, it was very true.🤣
You have just insulted my name, my instrument, my life, my whole country. Thanks 😂😂😂
Trent you are hilarious. Keep on making videos!! :)
I have played an O'Malley cimbasso for the past 2 years (natively 7 year tuba player) and it's been the most fun I've had playing low brass so far. Definitely pick one up if you get a chance or go to a shop and try it out. Pedal notes are so free.
I use both a brass and a tenor trigger trombone and one for jazz and one for concert
i am also an australian fan of you, and i can confirm i can only use the internet because my mother is welsh
My savage meter is off the charts!
Have you ever played a tuba with a flute mouthpiece, or vice versa?
ah yes, the beautiful shittyphone
you damn savage i play french horn😂😢
love the vid
The sassy savage levels are of the charts.Hahaha no offense to trent
I'm from Brazil, ind I enjoy a lot your work! #keepstrong
an evening I will have indeed
How familiar are you with the American Drum & Bugle Corps activity?
Watch his g bugle reviews.
Funniest thing I've seen in a long time 😂😂😂
A tuba like instrument with a double reed did exist in the 19th C. It's the sarrusophone, invented in 1856, a family of outdoor wind instruments.
haha! I love how this video gave me some good laughs.
I have a question myself.
Do you think there is any difference in sound between a silver plated brass instrument and a lacquer plate instrument?
There's been this myth going around that silver plated instruments sound brighter and such. Just wanted your opinion
12:00 IM DYING OF LAUGHTER
i love you thank you
The best 13 minutes today 😂😂😂
2:33 Reminds me of the youtube videos "Is it a good idea to microwave this?"
Trent is a natural born savage. Not even a joke.
He roasted that Australian lmao😂
7:32 is the absolute truth. The first time around.
Nice opinions. Funny answers
Except for "your mum."
9:53 I hate Trumpets. I play Tuba. They call me a Giant Fart.
You are amazing.
Hey Trent, I was just wondering when you were planning to make the video on the Bach model 37 and 72. I am a trumpet player and an owner of these instruments, so I'd love to see this video! I love the channel, keep it up!
Hi Ian, unfortunately I have neither of those instruments so can't make a video on them.
You should do stand up comedy. That was probably one of the best videos you’ve 🎺
Hilariously, you did eventually get a french horn.
Yes, but did he actually play it, without a trombone mouthpiece?
"I hope you have an evening"
Here is a question can you play a violin. With a trumpet mouth piece
Ps iam a tenor trombone player
Professor Snape
Tenor trombone is the best sounding instrument imo. I'm biased tho because I play it
I play tenor, and alto
JackSLR783 3 Cool 😎
Professor Snape yes and I have also found great success playing my piano with one
Andy thanks man 😂

the fact this comment has (had) no replies is just sad.
"Excellence comes through volume," any trumpetist/tubist/trombonist
Have you ever considered creating brass ensemble that features the instruments you have collected over the years? If not, you should. I'd go to see a performance of that.

Dear Trent, do you have a flugelbone and if so, would you review it?
What's your favorite color
Will you a part 2? Also what's the outro piece?
What was the first brass instrument you wanted to play?
Bobby Jones Vuvuzela I would think.
have to be your mum.
I guess I like sarcasm, because this is really funny. The advice is rubbish, and the comedy is genius. Go, Trent.
Next time, more silly questions please people!!
ive heard that one should brush his/her teeth before playing trumpet. i guess it is to keep inside of the trumpet clean but i dont know if this is the real answer or not. what do you think?
Is there a different tone from a Tuba with rotary valves compared to a tuba with Piston valves?
Scout Scamp in short, yes
What trombone is better Yamaha YSL154 Student Trombone or Bach TB600 Student Trombone
That video was published exactly on my sisters birthday literally they were born exactly that day they are almost 1 now
Sir Hamilton,
I bought my first trumpet a week ago. Do you (or anyone else in the comment section for that matter) recommend any good beginner trumpet books? maybe one that teaches finger position with the score?
keep it up love your videos!
I used the "a tune a day" books to learn originally, but I'm sure there are other and better options.
top man, cheers!
@@TrentHamilton OH MY GOD, the tune a day books, my music teacher gives me photocopies of those pages to learn trombone.
I play trumpet and want to play trombone, but do you reccomend trying both?
Could you do some videos on either music theory?
I have a Bach 72
Serious Question:
What's the lowest reliable range for a Bass Bone part? I'd assume pedal F, but I want to know for sure.
Brass or woodwinds?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a deep mouth piece such as a Dennis Wick 5abl?
I play percussion and trumpet, and want tot get into saxophone. Do you think I should?
Ever played a Rath Trombone? What's your opinion?
plays trombone, values his dignity. I see a bit of an oxymoron.
What do you mean? Jerking off and blowing a large bone is very dignifying.
When are you going to put a French Horn Mouthpiece on the BIG Bb Bass?
You should do a Ventil-Fanfare, there is a few on Ebay
If someone is a great at the French horn I don't mind, but if someone, or most, suck I would have to drop kick both the person and horn, and that goes for all woodwind instruments too
Wolff tbh I agree
Could you do a video on your favourite trombone solos?
Can you do a video of the Cimbasso?
what do you think of the euphonium and will you ever make a video i about it in the future?
He's made videos...
thanks for replying to my comment!! hope to see some Lord of the ring themes soon!!! (Bethany Hitchcock)
Hey Trent, will u ever do a review on a Wagner Tuba
Hey I really enjoy your channel, is mayonnaise an instrument?
I want to start playing french horn...why does everyone dislike it?

Jackson Stradley!!!
Hey, is Mendini a good brand?
Have you ever played a piece with a piccolo trombone part in it? Or, do you know of any pieces with a piccolo trombone part?
I can't believe Trent insulted the French Horn.
