I have NFC tags all over my home for various home automation tasks. A couple tips here: 1. If you get tags that are stickers you can put them under the corner of your light switch plates (credit to Smart Home Solver for this tip). My wife approves of this because she doesn't have to see the tag. 2. I setup all my tags with Home Assistant. Home assistant allows my automations to work in both iOS and Android. Also, with home assistant you can have the tag do one thing for one phone and another thing with a different phone. This is perfect if say you and your wife have different room preferences when watching TV. One lesson I learned when I was setting up NFC tags is that different tags have different memory capacity. Be sure to get tags that have enough memory for the instructions you are writing.
Thanks! Would love to see a lot more home automation videos. Could you make a series of videos using Apple and Android but also use Google home, Samsung smartthings and Alexa. Maybe a home assistant video down the line, I think that would cover a wide range of people and skill levels.
I scan a tag when I replace my furnace filter but I use the Home Assistant app. I think others are hiding tags in pictures and light switches. That's a great example to start a routine. A picture is "worth a thousand words". So are objects and it makes it easy to remember what something does. Scan a picture of your daughter in the entertainment room to start her favorite shows. Scan her teddy bear to start a night time routine. Scan the one by your bed to start your nighttime routine. EDIT: Let's not forget Tasker on Android. It's the all time OG for Android automation and it can do NFC.
The coolest use case for NFC tags that I have ever seen is having a tag on each record in a vinyl collection. You can tap your phone to the tag on the record and it will automatically start playing that album on a streaming service on speakers in that room.
We use NFC tags to automate setting countdown timers for our washer and dryer. We also have tags for setting reminders to replace water and HEPA filters - after replacing them of course.
It doesn’t work if your lightbulbs are multicolored/hue lights. You have to select a color that you want them to turn on to if they’re off, you can’t just “turn it back on to whatever color it was previously.” It sucks bc you’re not always going to have your lights the same color.
I would be interested in a video on installing and using Homebridge, Lon. I would probably use a Docker container on a Synology NAS, but installation on a Raspberry Pi would be handy too.

I've never done this before.. but I am tech savvy. Having said that - your response makes no sense. Apple 'just' looks for a unique ID # and then it knows what Shortcut automation to perform.... ?!?! Because I've watched a few tutorial/reviews from your channel.. I figured it was safe to invest the time and watch till the end... I thought the purpose of these videos was to share knowledge... remove the guesswork.. watch and then move forward with confidence. Watching didn't help... and neither did your response. @@LonSeidman
I’d love to see a video on using Homebridge, if possible, consolidating my Ring doorbell, Ring home security sensor, Google Nest thermostats and Google cameras into Apple HomeKit control since I have Apple TV 4K unit and everyone in my family has iPhones and iPads. Supposedly I can send google camera video to my iCloud plan without paying for Nest Aware subscription fee? And I’ve also seen reference to Starling and Hoobs home hubs. Are they worth the cost? And where does Matter fit in? So much new to learn on home automation!

I remember when NFC tags first became available, I had bought several and had ideas like this I wanted to setup. At the time, there was not much integration like there is now so I moved on to using Alexa. For the most part, Alexa works good enough but I could see where some NFC integration could also be useful.
Cool, but isn't it more energy to reach in your pocket, place your phone on the NFT tag, and then place it back in your pocket, rather than just flick a switch?

Noob here. Is there a possibility of using one of these NFC tags (inserted in my wallet) to geolocate my position such that whenever I walk into my room, all the light settings are switched on? Or can this be done with the iPhone already (and how)? Thanks everyone

I’d just do a toggle on music command to start at your alarm time and then when you scan it will toggle off.

You don't need to program the tag in that example - Apple just looks for the tag's unique ID number.

Seems as if Google Home doesn't natively support NFC tags so there are a lot of workarounds. Would love to see what you recommend for an Android user.
