Full playthrough of Castlevania: Bloodlines for Sega Genesis. This playthrough was recorded March 28th, 2017 by Mike Matei. Developed by Konami, Castlevania: Bloodlines is one of my favorite Sega Genesis games. It has an excellent soundtrack composed by Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) which gives it an appropriately styled atmosphere.

I like that when a games on James & Mike Mondays & doesn't get finished, we get a full play through a bit later by mike.
Ramjet164 Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Mike is awesome, especially when he tortured himself to play Ikari Warriors for us.
Ramjet164 that is cool
Having a bad memory is cool too. You can watch the same video 6 months later and it's almost completely fresh again. I think it was the years of drinking hard everyday if anyone is interested in achieving this.
very true

"This is a really difficult game" *Only dies 3 times* Mike, you're a monster.
it's a really easy game to grasp but hard to get used to since it's basically early Richter controls without the backflip
i used to think this game was shitty, and i'm a huge castlevania fan. but watching this playthrough actually made me change my mind. i never played it long enough to see that it's actually a stellar game.
One of the best Castlevania's ever, mostly because of the impressive soundtrack made by the great Michiru Yamane, that was actually her first Ost. The beginning of an era, indeed
OK, the environment effects are definitely impressive: knocking down the pillars to walk on them in Atlantis, the Minotaurs _grabbing_ the pillars to use as weapons! That's so cool!
The music for this game is incredible ! The same composer that made the music for Symphony of The Night ( Michiru Yamane ) also did the music for this game as well !
You should play Shinobi III. True masterpiece in my opinion
Amazing game 👍
Easily in the top 10 of the best games on the Genesis. Maybe Top 5 because it's an awesome game.
Nice hearing some love for the Genesis Mike.
genesis is so underrated. especially if you grew up only playing nintendos. there were some real gems💎 SEGA is love. SEGA is life!
Maybe he'll go back and complete Out of this World with some help from the comments ... yeesh!
Who doesnt love it?
i7887 bad guys
Genesis is underrated by everyone including many Sega fans.
Mike, check out Rocket Knight Adventures, it's another great looking Konami game on the Genesis, and then there's the music, just wow.
I was in the middle of writing a post to recommend this, when I saw your post. But yeah, that game's gorgeous and has an amazing soundtrack. I'm sure James would love it too.
L2Nuku he should play Streets of Rage 2, Thunder Force IV and Alien Soldier. All amazing SEGA genesis games with awesome music :)
Yeeeees, that's why I was gonna suggest!! Easy, beautiful graphics and super fun! A must get for any genesis fans and non-fans.
That's what makes it great
I love that game, its a bit hard but has a lot of fun
The game is so much easier with eric.
Shinobi006 i was screaming when he didnt pivk eric
Shinobi006 im glad im not the only one lol
Yes, thank you. He's the best character in the PreSOTN Castlevania games.
Is Eric the guy with the spear? Not going to lie IMO the spear is new and fun for this game
Wow Contra: Hard Corps is such a underrated game and not many people even know it.
As for very pretty games on Genesis, I'd recommend Ristar.
kaczan3 yes ristar is an awesome game
Right
Beat it yesterday with Eric. His super jump saved my ass a few times. He leaps up platforms before the screen catches up. He also does damages to floating enemies and bosses with that jump.
This CastleVania feels a little more fast paced compared to previous entrys in the series imo
Love how in this game the enemies use the environment itself against you. You get the worg breaking the windows and raining broken glass on you, minotaurs ripping off marble columns and smacking you with them, the werewolf grabbing the clock's hands and throwing them like javelins...it's just great if you don't expect it.
I love that Contra and Castlevania's debatably best entries are for the Genesis.
Man this game really does show what the system can do, I really enjoyed the visual effects. Great video Mike
Thanks glad you enjoyed it -Mike
That intro was pretty damn nice
I think the 16-bit era was the best time for gaming
Nah that would be the N64 and playstation 1 era
@@adamantium4797nah PS2.
I always loved that the ruins of Castle Dracula was the first level. Seeing it in ruins is always awesome. Glad you found that wall meat, Mike. You passed up a few breakable walls, and wasn't sure if you were gonna find that one.
If you choose Eric, his spear can be used in 6 directions, and he has a super jump to reach some places John can't reach. Also, play Gunstar Heroes one of these days. Talk about a beautiful game that's a blast to play!
loved this game. was blown away by it when it first came out and still looks and sounds great.
Best old school Castlevania ever!
Mine favorite is super castlevania
Zaper Bloxox part 4 for super nintendo is the best ever
chuckobscure whatever it was the best of the series
Castlevania 3, multiple paths, you can take with you multiple characters, play as Alucard, Amazing music, Castlevania 3 is by far the best old school Castlevania, even better than super castlevania and Castlevania Blood Lines.
My favorite is Castlevania 3, however Bloodlines is in my top 3.
Another outstanding game by konami on the genesis is rocket knight adventures. Graphically it is one of the best titles on the system as well as the music and game play. If your talking about video games being an art form rocket knight adventures is a true piece of art! I seriously recommend it if you haven't already played it! It would be great for a James and Mike Monday!
Erszebet Bathory became Elizabeth Bartley. Oh the 90's.
That intro with the digital-Mike graphic is bad-ass!!!!!!
Hey Mike! Nice to see not only love for the Genesis, but praise! It took you awhile, but Im glad to see you come around! Genesis didn't have the color palette SNES did, but had a faster processor, which is why there is no slowdown in this game compared to SCV4. Want another awesome KONAMI Genesis exclusive? Play Rocket Knight Adventures! Owned it as a kid, its one of the Genesis classics!!
The SNES didn't even have the color pallette that it claimed to have. Lies!!!
I like Streets of Rage II where the final boss goes nuts with the machine gun in an attemot to gun you down and kills some of his minions in the process.
This game was fucking awesome! I got so nervous you had so many close calls with these bosses, 2 health bars left? you're epic MIKE!
yes! the Genesis playthroughs are the best!
thanks, Mike!
So classic I love to see these Mike!
Speaking of good looking SEGA games, the two Vectorman titles pushed that system to its limits and looked great.
everything you create that expresses feelings is art!
All-around bad-ass game!!! And that music-score is just so amazing and immersive.
He beat the whole game in an hour? Holy shit
Mike is pro! I've never beaten this game period!
Yeah. Most games back then I think could be beaten in an hour or so if you're good. The longevity in a lot of games was usually in people dying over and over and over because of the difficulty. Lol.
Morginorg i think that is what it took me 2 or 3 20 min videos on youtube
Games back then weren't that long, dumbass.
Moon, you're the dumbass since most of us have played this game and can't beat it in an hour.
I remember Clockwork Knight. In fact, I still have it. One of the MANY underrated Saturn gems that deserve to be played and talked about.
Man those candles staying lit underwater haha
Cowboys of Moo Mesa...now there is a name I haven't heard in years
The music of this game is beautiful. "Calling from heaven" is outstanding!
bloodlines is such a nice name. in Europe we just got "the new generation"
Refreshing to see some Sega games!!
43:36 - When the big armors die, they look like they're doing that arm-jerk "Up yours!" gesture
there is a code where whenever you get the fully upgraded weapon it plays music from the classic games
"Enter the options menu. Set 05 as the BGM (background music) and 073 as the SE (sound effects) selections. Press Start to begin game play. Now once you fully upgrade your whip/ spear alternate tracks will play. These tracks include: Vampire Killer, Bloody Tears"
But there are more songs, I can't remember which ones off the top of my head though
There is only three songs available with the code. The third is "Beginning".
I love how the stage 2 boss does the Terminator 2 thumbs up as he sinks off the screen.
Man Mike, great playthrough! This gives me a deeper appreciation for this game and your content!
Great playthrough Mike. Can't go wrong with Castlevania. :)
Sick intro Mr. Matei.
Damn I miss Castlevania, its a real shame that the franchise remains dormant :/
That reflectivity in Stage 2 of this game was also used in Rocket Knight Adventures, which was released a year prior to this game.
One of my favorite Sega Genesis games. awesome level design and amazing music. Great video Mike!
I love the animation at the start
Awesome video! Love the intro. I hope you guys will also finish Rondo of Blood as well. You guys got far and then gave it up. I know both of you are busy with all these other projects, but it would be cool to see you two (or maybe just even Mike) finish it up :D
One of the best Castlevanias and AWESOME tunes with Genesis sound chip on this one.
le corbeau qui grignote le cadaver au début du jeu est une touche impressionante
Great playthrough Mike :)
Castlevania: Bloodlines is a very good Castlevania game on another system...
Anyhow, I think that there're a lot more great games on the Genesis, like:
Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf & Jungle Strike (Urban Strike is ok I think), Toejam & Earl, Toejam & Earl In Panic On Funkotron, Alien 3, Flashback: The Quest For Identity, Ghostbusters, Landstalker: The Treasures Of King Nole, Rocket Knight Adventures, Shining Force 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, The Story Of Thor (aka Beyond Oasis), Sword Of Vermillion, Rock 'N Roll Racing, Shining In The Darkness, etc.
Strange that you didn't mention the Earthworm Jim as one of the best games for Sega Genesis.
I think it could easily share the top place with Toejam and Earl. It was such a masterpiece.
Love Castlevania games but have never played this one. It looks really fun and the graphics are really nice to look at
I always thought the mechanical noises the bosses make when they die were pretty funny.
Beating a game this hard in an hour? Damn, that's some real skill!!
I didn't know sinking old sanctuary originated in this game! I LOVE that track!
Mike, if you want to talk about beautiful Genesis games, you can't not mention Ristar (made by the same guys as Sonic, absolute classic), Dynamite Headdy, Phantasy Star IV (rpg, but it counts I guess?), Lion King (was on snes as well, but I always played this version), and Ecco 1/2 (Warning: these games are two of the hardest fucking games you'll ever play, and they can be really weird and creepy in places).
Longtime fan, love all your stuff Mike!
Mike the vampire 😆😆 I love that your up all night playing games so that way I can either watch or listen to you play and helps me find some great games that I will buy off Amazon to enjoy on my old systems as well if I don't have the game. I'm always up all night.
Dimitrius Medina 😄 Id be up all night playing games and geekin if I didnt have to fucking work...
Michael Smythe yeah. I work 3rd shift. I never been a morning person.
I agree Mike. Video games are 100% art.
Why don't you ever check all the walls no matter what? It could have health in it, you are constantly saying you need health and don't know where the power ups are. So just hit every spot you can to see if there is one. It won't hurt.
Wondering how many Brazilians watch the Nerd and Mike playing stuff :D Great game and video, keep up with the awesome work and cheers from Brazil!
While one of the underrated games in the series, it is still one of my favorites.
That intro was so killer, it left bloodlines all over!!!
i dont know how you get that deep into a game anymore. we're practically the same age. i had this game when i was 14-15 and i never really got into it nearly as much as you do. usually whenever i start playing a game, i think i can be doing something more constructive. i used to be a HUGE gamer, but now its more casual.
The game is like one hour long dawg, I think you have ADHD.
the rendering of this video is great quality!
Mike's whip is unstoppable.
I love this game. This was the Castlevania i had as a kid
Digging these Castlevania playthroughs with Mike. That Haunted Castle playthrough was so clutch awesome. I hope we get to see the MSX Vampire Killer playthrough one of these days.
Wicked new intro Mike! Really digging it! :)
I really like Mikes admiration for the game at the credits. I feel the same way towards all the classic Castlevania games that I've beaten and other great games when their credits play.
14:32 "Fucking turn around and hit the wall! The game shows you where the meat is in this one!" he screamed, in vain at the computer monitor.
If I don't remember wrong, the Hard Mode has the "true" final cinematics
You can really see the sprite limitation as Mike plays it. It's rather clever. They never have more than a dozen on screen at any time, and seeing more than two enemies on screen at the same time are exceedingly rare. That you don't notice it if you aren't looking is a sign of well thought out design. You can also see how clever they were working around the 2 layer limit with clever artwork. Those shadows are freaking clever as hell. The genesis doesn't have an alpha channel to speak of. I'm still trying to work out how they did it. You can also see how they worked around the 512/61 color limit with very careful choices and clever hacks.
Glad you too realize that the Genesis had some really nice visual presentation. I think in some instances it actually could produce nicer visuals than the SNES. Gunstar Heroes, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Batman and Robin come to mind in particuar. Lightening Force as well.
this one definitely did what nintendon't .
Maybe early on but later in the cycle it was no contest who had the visuals on lock. What sours me on the Genesis is the ear gratingly TERRIBAD sound. Imagine how much more awesome this game would be if it had proper PCM sound instead of crap square waves and sawteeth? It destroys any chance of me enjoying what could be done visually
. To counter, DKC, Yoshi's Island, Star Fox, Metroid, EarthBound, Mario RPG comes to mind as gorgeous games with Far FAR superior sound.
I agree that the snes could do pseudo 3D visuals in a better fashion, however I believe that the Genesis could do slicker 2d visuals and better animation thanks to its processor which ran at twice the speed of the SNES. Take a look at games like Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Thunder Force IV, Streets of Rage 2 and 3, the Sonic series, Quackshot and Mickey Mania. It could handle far more Sprites on screen without slowing down. I agree on the sound though, although I do believe in some aspects the Genesis had surperior music, at least in terms of offering faster paced, more hard rocking music.
Nickolas Ecker well, it seems you fell into the blast processing myth. The fact is that it's simply not true. The Genesis couldn't display as many colors at the same time, couldn't scale like the SNES could. The SNES had twice the ram, 8 times the sound RAM 2 more sound channels, tens of thousands more colors at twice the resolution with 48 more sprites on bank The SNES was a superior machine in every aspect except the core processor which is a non issue, there was a mechanism in place that allowed the SNES to make use of on game co-processors, something as far as I'm aware of, the Genesis didn't have. (Hence the ever increasing amounts of tacked on garbage the thing had to endure as the system aged, while the SNES simply expanded its capabilities through the carts)
That the Genesis could make anything that didn't look like puke is more on the talents of the programmers than anything regarding the abilities of the hardware.
after 20+ years and owning all the systems. I can say the SNES is on a whole other level than the genesis. And i grew up playing nothing but sega games and had the worthless life support attachments. Lots of great games but outside of gameplay/content itself - most of the games leave a lot to be desired in the color/sound department. i remember getting a genesis with sonic 2 , then going over to my friends house to play super mario world - my mind was blown , but no way in hell were my parents dishing out another $100+ for a game system, so i stuck it out with genesis until i eventually got a ps1.
I can't believe this is playing on a genesis, the quality is amazing!
there are a LOT of genesis games at this level of quality
You obviously have never played a Sega Genesis then. There are tons of amazing games for that console.
Great mike! Keep up these full playthrough videos!
Mike's capture card (in Borat's voice): 'Let us make slowdown time. Yes, very good'.
The update to your gaming setup shows big time here
I love James and Mike their videos are so nice and relaxing. Cheers guys keep up the good work :>
That intro was EPIC!!
Mike, Who had the better box art for Castlevania? SNES or Genesis. Both are pretty cool.
Fun fact you ever notice the only time during WWII they have their helmets strapped is during parades it's because if an artillery shell hits near them the pressure wave doesn't rip heir heads off or jeeps with the metal blade going up from the bumper is there for any wires the Germans put up for decapitation are cut before said decapitation occurs.
Mega Turrican is a good looking run and gun game on the Mega Drive/Genesis
I honestly think you could really grow in your appreciation for the Genesis Mike if you continue to dive into its action-oriented library.
Long live the 16-bit era! If you play any of these be sure to research your move-sets and controls for some of them. For the games themselves unfortunately don't tell you what kind of gameplay mechanics you have at your disposal.
The games with a # have mechanics that aren't easily apparent to the player, check them out!
My top personal recommendations in no order...
Revenge of Shinobi #
Shinobi 3 # (use the 6 button cheat code!)
Streets of Rage 2# (over 13 attacks to perform)
Thunder Force III and IV #
Musha #
Gunstar Heroes #
Alien Soldier
Rocket Knight Adventures
Vectorman
Beyond Oasis #
Ristar
Comix Zone #
Ghouls and Ghosts
This, Contra Hard Corps, and Sonic Spinball were the only games I had as a kid. Dark Souls..my body was ready.
I loved the Castlevania series, especially Dracula's Curse. I remember Super Castlevania coming out not long after Dracula's Curse. Somehow I had totally missed this game back in the 90's, and it's a shame because it's freakin' awesome. I wish I had seen it back then. I caught it just a few years ago.
I can beat this with Eric, I love playing him as he is different, but i still can't get past the half way mark with John. Nice work man. Good for you. This is like playing on Difficult +1.
Would have helped him if he knew he could whip up while jumping ^^
Soon we will have Lecarde Chronicles 2! ^^
that's some awesome animation intro
I will watch the shit out of it when I come back home
That new rgb setup you got is awesome.Looks good
Was fantastic to watch! Thank you. If you ever have time please do more videos like this.
One question, Is the game easier to complete if you play with Eric instead of John?
I never watch full walkthrough videos cause I don't have time but when it's Castlevania then fuck it, I'll make myself have time!
This is one of the few older Castlevanias I never played. I really want to now, it looks awesome. The music is top notch as always and the scenery is great. Konami was awesome back in the day
Oh, I know a couple songs on guitar (Calling From Heaven and Requiem For the Nameless Victims), nice to see where they came from finally
Konami did well for Sega during this time. This, Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra: HC & Snatcher....... Great titles.
Finally, a game that I actually beat when I had it as a kid. I found beating it using the spear guy was easier. Time to remember this game, as once I beat it I never played it much after. Castlevania IV had way more replay value, so every couple of years I come back to it. This one will bring back some memories, as it did when you guys covered it before. Now to enjoy the whole game, woohoo!
