    In this upload we drive from Bayonne NJ to Washington DC in the 2019 Bolt EV. I left with a little less than a full battery (193 mile estimated average). Door to door the trip was about 220/230 miles. The Bolt EV has an EPA estimated range of 238 miles per charge... Will we make it???
    This was my first long trip in a full EV vehicle and I have to say it went very well. The Bolt drives great even with three passengers are luggage for a week stay in DC. Even with the extra weight the power felt the same as well as the handling.
    At highway speeds of 65/70 mph, the extra weight, and 60 degree temps we achieved about 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour on the highway and totaled an average of 3.8 once we arrived in DC.
    Hope you enjoyed the video.. please comment below with your comments, suggestions, and experiences driving your EV vehicles.

    It is a trending bar like you said. If it's trending down you will see the min, average, and max ranges all drop continuously. If you don't see a trending bar then you should get the average range. And if it's trending up you will get more than the car is predicting at the moment.
    To get consistent range estimates on a road trip you need to keep the trend bar in the middle.

      @@DaveBsellsChevy it is a bar graph of estimated range; minimum at the bottom, maximum at the top. [Sees News Coulomb TH-cam channel]
      And the Bolt was designed for the average woman. I test drove a 2020 Bolt at the local car show and after a few minutes I couldn't get my back comfortably centered; it always felt like I was at the edge of the seat back, other than that the seats are fine and I tried to explain that to the rep.
      Other than that it needs 100+ KW DC fast charging. 55 KW is so 2010, not 2020.
      I have only bought one luxury car in my life (Mercury Marques), currently drive a Nissan Versa, so the hard plastic doesn't bother me. Once the cost of the battery technology declines a bit more (GM's battery factory online) the Bolt should be in the low $20k.
      Other than that I would definitely consider buying a Bolt, but as is I would buy a used Volt over the Bolt. (Test drove a 2019 last year)

    Dave - you focus on the yellow “trending” bar for the equivalent efficiency to instantaneous mpg in a gas powered car. Here’s a better spot - in the center screen, there’s an information screen which will show you your average efficiency - in a bar graph - for 5 mile increments. On the right side of that is a bar which can be perceived as instantaneous consumption. Check it out while driving. You’ll see that it moves up or down more quickly than the previously mentioned yellow bar.

  • @homomorphic
    @homomorphic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That meter shows you how much you are trending toward the upper or lower limits (which are themselves guesses). If the bar is all the way down to the lower limit, then unless you change something about the driving you will end up at the lower range estimate (likewise for the upper estimate).

    • @DaveBsellsChevy
      @DaveBsellsChevy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a recent experiment I drove 32 highway miles with an average estimate 37 miles of range left.. it was pretty darn accurate. When I hit 13 miles the gauge turned to "low"... I reset the trip odometer and got home which was exactly 13 miles. I have no idea how much battery was left but couldn't have been more than a mile or two.

      @@DaveBsellsChevy It is a very good guesser,. It guessing though, and you can work against it. If you consider it your partner in trying to maintain a good estimate of range it does a *very* good job. If you deliberately drive erratically you can mess it up. Don't do that. Develop a consistent driving behavior and you'll learn to love the GOM.

    I wonder if there is a way to connect an underhood generator from MotorHomes that can output upwards of 700 watts connecting it to the from wheels using the forward momentum to charge the batteries and maybe run the “engine” to extend the range of the vehicle sort of like a reserve fuel tank

    Drafting certainly helps. If you stay a car length or two behind a semi you will get about +20% range at 70mph. Rent a Tesla sometime and you can easily see it happening with the energy consumption graph in the car. It's kinda fun to find a fast moving semi and cruise behind them for a while in Autopilot.

      @@DaveBsellsChevy It's a total different beast compared to any other EV, ask Tesla for an overnight test drive. I took out a Model X 100D and drove it about 800 miles in the 24 hours they let me have it. Or you could rent one through Turo. That's how I drove the Model S and Model 3. 1300 miles in 4 days in the Model S P85D and 2800 miles in a week in a Model 3 MidRange. Out of all of them I think the Model 3 was actually the best by far and it didn't even have autopilot. Just waiting for them to come into the used market under 25k in a couple years lol. Right now I'm trying to get a used 2017 Bolt Premier though, I "must" replace my 2013 Nissan leaf I've had for 4 years already.

  • @gbr1960

    Plugshare and Better Route Planner apps indicate fairly easily where to charge. You have about 150-200 miles before the bladder bursts, so plan your charging to coincide with restroom breaks, a quick bite and stretch a bit. "Free" charging can be problematic, so reliable pay sites are the best bet. Keep in mind that DC fast-charging slows down incrementally as the battery fills past ~55%, so it's sometimes best to just move on to the next charge stop. 30 minutes is probably a typical amount of time for DC fast-charging (and that time goes fast)then keep going. I'm amazed at the capability of my '17 Bolt EV and have over 27K miles on it already.

    Not sure so sure I could do a all electric. The Volt would be better for me. I always like a full tank of gas (my dad always said it doesn't cost anymore to have a full tank of gas), so I don't think a Bolt would work for me. A Volt sounds more like what I could use. I've never really looked for charging stations, but I don' think there are many in Nebraska. Have a safe trip and enjoy!

    • @DaveBsellsChevy
      @DaveBsellsChevy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we have the Volt too and that car is truly the best of both worlds

    • @blownb310
      @blownb310 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I enjoyed this video Dave but I disagree with the 'best of both worlds' statement. A Volt PHEV loses efficiency by carrying around the dead weight of a combustion engine, fuel tank, exhaust system, etc. So during the EV miles, you're losing efficiency, and then losing again during gas miles, because you're hauling around the battery as dead weight. A Volt is needlessly complex and hardly the best of both worlds. The bigger problem is that PHEVs don't promote DC fast charging infrastructure. Their 'fast charging' is buying gasoline. With the average new car lasting between 15-20 years, this PHEV 'bridge technology' is actually prolonging getting off of fossil fuels.

    • @gbr1960
      @gbr1960 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blownb310 Would agree somewhat that the ICE is a dead weight during EV mode - which if your commute is within the EV range, you'd rarely need it nor gas in the tank; but since the ICE feeds juice to the battery which runs transaxles via the AC motors in range-extend mode, the battery is never just dead weight. My Gen-1 Volt got me up to 42 mpg in range-extend mode and up to 42 miles in EV mode, except a bit less in winter months. The Volt was a bridge for me, being the step from a hybrid. I might've purchased the BoltEV then had it been available, so it worked out good for me (Tesla would've worked but too rich for my blood).

    • @kaazruo
      @kaazruo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the PlugShare app - it will tell you exactly where chargers are and whether they are level 2 or level 3 (DC fast chargers). Granted, we live in CA, but we take our 2019 Bolt on all of our road trips and leave our ICE vehicle at home in the garage. I have had minimal issues with chargers on the road trips. We will be a 2 EV household within the next couple of years.

And God forbid you don't find a charging station in time, or it's occupied or broken! Then what. But great video, I'd love to buy a Bolt but because of what i just said, and driving a lot, it would not be feasible.

      Tesla and VW answered both of your concerns. Both have fast charging (tesla supercharger v3 and VW electrify america 270kw) and are extremely cheap. To supercharge a model 3 to full it only costs about 10 bucks. The number of superchargers is also plentiful, especially around major freeways and malls.

      Consider the flip side of how convenient it is to plug it at home overnight (assuming you have that option) and waking up to a full "tank". Those 5-10 minutes driving to the gas station every week to fill up in local driving quickly add up, compared to the few longer 300+ mile trips people take, where charging on the road takes extra time. In many cases, the convenience of the former far outweighs the inconvenience of the latter.
