On another note that's a pretty well stocked bar you have on top of the cabinet in the shop. 🍻

You chatted about hail wiping out your crop a couple years ago. Well, in Belle Fourche, many of us just lost our crop on Sunday evening to a major hailstorm of marble and up to softball sized stones for nearly 20 minutes. I hope you get your crop and I hope we get one in just a few weeks too.

@@ellenhinderlie6329 Thank you. I now relate to Mike’s earlier hayfield comment with hail on a personal level. We were more fortunate than 2-3 miles north of us. We had multiple windows broken out of the house, siding destroyed, roofs heavily damaged. The hay, well that is small in the big scheme of things. We are safe. North of town, they took the brunt of the storm. We had 90+ mph winds, theirs was higher. I’m sure there was a tornado somewhere, maybe just not a touchdown. Nonetheless, I’ve never seen hail the size of a baseball let alone hail flying parallel to the ground. My eyes were opened to the power and the destruction. We lost only one chicken and one turkey must have gotten hit in the head and leg as she can’t walk and holds her head in a funky manner. We were only a mile from the south end of the storm. I think 3 or 4 from the north end, meaning it was only 5 mi wide, but I’ve not heard how long it was. Hulett WY was thrown out as the start, that’s about 15 mi West.

The other added expense that you have to figure in this year is the price of fuel next week cause it sure ain't gonna be the same as this week. I tend to agree with you that it will be better to grow your own. Praying that all goes well between then and now. Haying season is always a gamble no matter when or where. God bless

I can see the joy, with the coming haying season. 3 years has been too long. I would say this is just what is needed with your new direction of your ranch. I just had I first load of hay delivered Tuesday with 100 degree weather too early and little rain I fear what the cost will be for my little ranch for rest of the year.

Same! We had to order hay as our fields are toast for this year, so no grazing is available. $375- $425 a TON! We’ve never had to buy hay this early in the season. I don’t know how long anyone can keep farming at that price. Something’s gotta give.

It's just an amazing & scary time for Wyoming, MT & Idaho with the runoff being crazy this year, but I am glad to see our city-country so green this year! Kudos to the folks in Gillette, WY. A friend was in Gillette when his trike broke down. He posted on FB that with the help of the U-Haul place he rented a truck to haul the trikes back to Kansas. They then needed to find a ramp to load them. With the help of the U-Haul folks, the folks at NAPA, the grain elevator and the railroad yard they got the bikes loaded and on their way home. He stressed how everyone was so helpful and he is very grateful for all of them.

We have a couple of small alfalfa fields. They’ve been mono-cultured for so long that they’re not very productive. As a test, I chopped and dropped one of them and cover cropped it with brassicas and clover. So far so good on that one. On the other I’ve decided to just let it go until fall, let it go to seed. This fall I’ll chop and drop it with a disk and then over seed it with winter wheat.
It will be interesting to see how it turns out but the productivity of the fields is horrible for south central Iowa.
We get three cuttings a year so feel for you getting just one but very happy for you that your cutting will be great.
Can’t tell you how happy I am that you’ll be stacking hay for this winter. That’s just awesome.
On another topic, are you going to be hosting speed goat hunters this fall?

Great video Mike! I've been doing round bales for 18 continuous years now, but it's always an educated guess. Around my area we can count on anywhere from 2 to 5 round bales per acre, that's based on a 4x5 round bale. The method you mentioned is eye opening information that I am going to try out. I would like to see how that works for my area and confirm, or not, my estimations of yields. Thanks for sharing, have a great rest of the week.

In the nineteen seventies outside of Cheyenne, ranchers were allowed to mow hay along state highways. Using the mile markers as a guide, you would bid on the section of the road that you wanted to cut. One person told me that some of the best grass was there because of the runoff of rainwater. Is this still allowed in Wyoming?

I've seen this done in KS and MO but usually it's being baled by the DOT

Mike did a video of the hazards of ditch grass. Think for a moment of all the nasty things that fall off of or are thrown out of cars and trucks on the highway. One punctured $2000 tire on the tractor, foreign debris in the mower, trash and roadkill in the bales. Far too many risks for his small operation.

@@ez1913That makes sense. Some of my extended family are ranchers. I do not recall or seeing them mowing ditch grass

wonder if you can monitor where your massive snow drifts are accumulating deeply and try to catch them with a snow drift fence to hold the water /snow on your land in maybe catch ponds or on pasture grass lands. that might help you hold that high nitrogen moisture on your pasture for spring growth rate. just like the moisture on the edge of the road example you made in this video. more moisture from road runoff accelerating spring plant growth. if anything, else it may help replenish your water tables. most people are trying to keep water on their grounds now a days.

So glad you have had enough moisture for hay. Hope all goes will for putting up the hay. And thanks for breaking down the cost of haying, farming. I was in Island Park ID on the 11th and 12th of June and it rained almost all the time, glad for that moisture. There was 2 1/2 ish feet of snow in the winter and we usually get 3-4 feet, so I was glad for that rain. I hear that Yellowstone got a lot of rain, and the north areas got flooding. Hope those that were impacted can rebuild, Gardner and Red Lodge. I am glad I was at the park earlier, last month.

Uplifting video! Have worried about your ranch and if there would be enough hay for this year. Thanks for the hula hoop lesson; know I would have lost it even on bare ground. Am a little disappointed you did not give a demonstration of the hula hoop original use.
