HOLE IN MY SHOE by Traffic (live in Sweden 1967- rarely performed live track with slideshow video)

  • This is a live version of 'Hole in My Shoe' sung by writer Dave Mason. The studio version of this song has been one of my most popular slideshow videos, so I thought I would upload this rarely performed live version. In fact it erks me that this song appears to have contributed to the alienation of writer Dave Mason from the rest of group and to his departure, as it is my favourite Traffic song. It would be a hard song to do live, and they have acquitted themselves nicely, particularly Dave's sitar work at the beginning, which takes up about half the running time.
I bought the original studio single version when it came out (Smiling Phases was the 'B' side). This song was written and sung by Dave Mason, rather than Steve Winwood who did most of the singing for the band. Interestingly, Dave said it was the first song he wrote and that it was like a nursery rhyme. He said he had not tried LSD at the time he wrote the song (many thought it was influenced by that drug). Francine Heimann was the six year old girl who did the spoken part in the middle of the original song. She was the stepdaughter of Island Records boss Chris Blackwell.
Winwood had success as a musician prior to joining Traffic, becoming the frontman of the Spencer Davis Group at age 15 in 1963. Winwood met drummer Jim Capaldi, guitarist Dave Mason, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Wood when they jammed together at The Elbow Room, a club in Aston, Birmingham. After Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group in April 1967, the quartet formed Traffic. Soon thereafter, they rented a cottage near the rural village of Aston Tirrold, Berkshire to write and rehearse new music.
Traffic signed to Island Records label and their debut single "Paper Sun" became a UK hit in mid-1967. Their second single, Mason's psych-pop classic "Hole in My Shoe", was an even bigger hit, and it became one of their best-known tracks, but it set the stage for increasing friction between Winwood and Mason, the group's principal songwriters.
The rest of their career involved various personnel comings and goings (Winwood joined Blind Faith for a year) and Dave Mason even rejoined again for a short period. They had varying success, although scoring with John Barleycorn Must Die and The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (Nov. 1971), which was a Top 10 American album athough did not chart in the UK. Sadly Chris Wood died in 1983 and Jim Capaldi in 2005. The above was adapted from Wikipedia.
I have put together a slide show video for this song, hopefully matching up images to the music. Comments are welcome.
My video of the studio version of this song is at:

Thx man! A bit more Dave's than Traffic when they parted ways if I might say so, watched Traffic in the 70's and it was nice but I enjoyed more the lots of times I went to see the Dave Mason Band, once he even opened for newcomers Fleetwood Mac (with Stevie Nicks, Buckingham and Chris. Mcvie) now you can call that a great double header, Later!

How. Fuckin. Trippy. Is. THAT?! Took me straight back to 1967, at school in the UK, where I heard this for the first time. Mind-blowing. Psychedelic. Life-altering. Which is why I still like it now B-)

Ed Rybicki. Hell yeah. You sound like a cool old man. I wish I could have experienced it first hand. Sadly, I was born in 87. I have had some great psychedelic experiences though and what's good about nowadays is that we have this enormous catalogue of great music from all ages to enjoy. But still, experiencing something first hand is like no other.

@ wilson mcphert........It makes ME very happy you own/ed the single too! I couldn't believe how quickly it was removed here (they are so strict, no idea why) and I'd waited and watched for it from the moment I bought my iPad a little over a year ago. Still have 3 Traffic albums in good condition, the wonderful Blind Faith CD, yet for some unknown reason, I have never owned this one. If you DO still have the original single, would it be possible to try putting it up again? You'd make an old Aussie very happy indeed. Kind regards, Linda.

Thank's i remember listening to this record as a child though not this version . This version ( especially at the beginning ) , sounds like they were into Indian mysticism like the Beatles in those day's. This is a live version of the song with pictures of the event . This hit is "rarely performed" live, yes, and it is a shame because it is such a good song, I miss it every time I listen to a live record from Traffic. The Sweden 1967 recording is nice, but give it a couple of years, with new musical instruments and tools, this song could have become far more better than some of the ususal live stuff (sorry Traffic).

    • @andythomas706
      @andythomas706 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Josef Nagy: Just how many 'Live' Traffic albums do you listen to? Answer: None! There are very few 'live' '67 recordings (other than BBC Sessions) of the original Traffic. The only one I know of is Copenhagen '67 which is a radio recording that happens to feature this track and Utterly Simple! Apart from that there is the Christmas On Earth (Cont.) footage also from '67. That's about it! As for the 'new musical instruments and tools' bit, I have no idea what you are talking about!

What a strange career path Dave Mason has had! He started off as a genius, and then acquired an American accent and political opinions so far to the right that even a moderate social and cultural conservative such as myself finds them deeply troubling. His music also went rapidly from brilliance to highly accomplished mediocrity.

Mason's solo work after Traffic didn't produce anything of note. Certainly they were not 'great albums'! Let's not talk the guy up eh? He was around, he was integral to the original Trafffic, he plays up his relationship with Hendrix and as I saw in a very recent interview, promoting his reappearance as a heritage act, fancies himself as the kingpin of the band. I think he's desperate!

Agree, Dave Mason's biggest fan was Dave Mason. He had his moments and a few radio hits through the decades kept him on the B-list. And indeed he was part of the original chemistry and magic of Traffic. But outside fo that pretty forgettable.

@@andythomas706 Alone Together was a good album and he had a good live show during the 70's, early 80's with a truly great backing band but he was not the star of Traffic, in fact they did just fine without him.

Thanks. Does anyone know exactly when in the sixties Traffic toured with Mason in tow? With his comings and goings, I can't figure out when he actually toured with them in the sixties. Thanks.

Saw them on a tour in the 60s.Was looking forward to them performing this.Unfortunately they did and it was dreadful. This is a bit ropey at the end to say the least. Not up to it vocally.
